My buddy lost his keys called me over to get him in his house he had a smart key kik,I spent 20min trying to spp it never got it and I'm pretty damn good at spp,,,,I tried raking it once and it opened haha always try raking first might save you time!!! Thanks bill
I spent a good hour with a city rake once, got no love. Pulled out a bogata and she popped open faster than a scared master lock. However now I think I may have been too rough on the tension.. must try again.
I just tried spp’ing it like LPL did. Tried raking with basically the same pick here. Tried a few other rakes with different amounts of tension. No luck. Starting sweating buckets an gave up. Guess I’m gonna have to revisit this pick again soon. I’m kinda wondering if shoving a really thin shim into the rekey slot if it will make it pick like a standard kwickset I’m decent with all the types of locks I’ve picked so far into some of the American 5200 series ect. This one here is just giving me a run
Excellent video. A couple notes and a question: 1 - These locks are pretty easily SPPed… it takes some practice before you get the hang of it… you use the same technique that you would use on other slider locks like the EVVA DPI (new version) and BiLock… if you are interested, my video numbers 151 and 153 explain and demonstrate the technique on smartkey locks. 2 - According the Kwikset, they have fixed the brute force flaw with new materials and redesigned sliders. I have not tested it with the purpose-made tool, but I can say that the key blank/screw driver method no locker works (you break the screw driver). 3 - I’m definitely going to experiment when I get home, but I’m surprised to see these so easily raked. Do you think the weak bitting contributed to this open? I ask because I’ve had no luck with exactly this technique, and it isn’t for lack of trying. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
Raking does work on some locks with better bitting - the good thing about Smartlocks is you can recode them however you like and try opening them again. With radical bitting I was unable to rake open my lock, so it does make a difference. Does the decoder trick work with the newer locks? In my opinion, the key blank/vice grip forced entry was the most serious weakness, since it's relatively quiet vs. booting the door in. Hopefully it will be possible to obtain kits to refit existing Smartlock installations. I'm less concerned about the decoding attack than the brute force attack.
Well said... I SPP'd / gutted one this weekend (my most recent video) and found that the same technique for decoding most any sidebar lock tends to work with them. Pick the thing that bites hardest, then go looking for the next one. If you pick pin/wafer pairs too early (not tightly bound under moderate tension), you will overset. For me at least, I was easily able to tell which one needed to be worked next because the false gates behaved like spools. Also, as you said in your video, you can tell you are in a true gate because the wafer is springy, but only gives slight vertical movement. A refreshing change coming out of my recent work with the ASSA Twin :)
This channel is soo addictive. i never thought that lock picking could be a hobby. thanks B.Bill for the knowledge, and my newest favorite hobby. you are awesome, and the other lock picking channel's aren't even as fun as this one. good job!!
Great !! I ordered a smartlock from HD supply And it come with no keys so i called them and they told me to throwed away and they will send me another one so i keep it and it took me 2mn. To opened like the way you show in this video.... now I have two locks with the same key thank you very much!! Great video...
As a note since this is an older video, newer generations of the smartkey system are no longer susceptible. Gen 3 and beyond generally require sidebar tensioners to pick, but they are still pickable
I just realized these are the same style of locks my apartment uses for all of their deadbolts (the only keyed lock!) in the entire complex. Just hearing that it is easily brute forced with a hand tool let alone a racking method is making me replace it this week.
I got a pair of the Smartkey door knobs just to match the deadbolts so I didn't require extra keys. I saw a set of those Smarkey deadbolts and thought "That looks really easy to break open." and left them on the shelf.
@Bosnianbill You make it look easy, you must have drilled into the casing and melted out the stack using a high precision laser! LOL That was just amazing how quickly the lock gave way under that simple raking. Good video!
Hi Bill, I had watching a lot of your videos without commenting, but as for these "Lockreview" (as well as for others) I want to thank you. Botching all the false security BS is something everyone should watch, and for me the Community of lockpickers is kind of a FDA for Locks ;) For everyone else: It is your security kids, don't get false security due to false claims...ask someone to pick your locks! No Lock is secure, it only takes more time to beat a good one than a bad one!
I have one of these, and have only managed to get it open twice (city rake both times). Have you tried raking it with a more difficult key bitting? I'll definitely give it another go this evening with lighter tension, thanks for the tip!
Mine has similar bitting, except that pin 5 is pretty low. So I raked it and tried to avoid hitting pin 5 and I got it open in about 2 minutes, about the time my hand was getting tired. Thanks for the advice on this intimidating lock !
Hey Bill, Thanks for showing me how easy it is... Been trying all this past weekend to single pick this and I know it's do-able, but will try raking now!
You can remove the core bill! It's surprisingly easy to do, open the lock, use a pick to pull the sliding metal plate that's in the bottom of the opening towards the outside of the body and the core will fall out
Good video Bill. I remember when these first came out. I thought they were going to make my life miserable, and now they do... I get these all the time. I just use my pick gun with light tension and sometimes a rake. If I'm in a hurry, I just use brute force. Junk...
Hi bosnianbill, I posted this question on tumbl3r's SPP video also, but I'd like to get your thoughts as well... between watching tumbl3r SPPing and you raking it open, I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get any pins to bind in mine at all, no matter what pressure, and no luck raking either... so I took it apart, and it turns out mine (that I just bought today) is different from his (and maybe yours, too), and apparently improved. On his, the sidebar was just sitting in it's little slot. Not sure why it would make a difference, but on mine, the sidebar is held in by two springs on either end pushing it inward and into the gates when they align (wish I could upload a picture here). The problem is if you put rotation tension on the plug, the sidebar binds against the recess in the sleeve and can't fall into the gates, thus nothing binds or grinds or anything - all just springy pins. So I thought I had figured out the answer -- since the same alignment that drops the sidebar *also* aligns the lower "gates" that let the rekeying assembly (I suppose that's what it's called) slide over the dogs between the wafers (which is what keeps the rekey tool from working without the key inserted), maybe I could use the rekey tool to put linear tension on that slider and get the wafers to bind against those dogs and get my sets that way (hope my terminology is right). I tested, and as long as the key is in, the slide will move regardless of whether it's at the 90 degree spot (it has a spring that holds it for you if it's in that spot, but that's the only significance to the 90 degree position), so you can simply put in the key, put in the tool and hold it in while you pull out the old key and put in a new key (without any turning at all) and you're rekeyed just fine. I figured if I got a pick that way, the assembly would slide to the rekey position and I could just keep pressure on the tool and put in whatever Kwikset key I had handy, and whammo, open and rekeyed. Sadly, if you put pressure on the slide with the tool before you put the key in, the sidebar binds up against the end of the sleeve recess slot it sits in, so it won't bind the wafers against the dogs, and won't even drop with the key inserted until you release the tool pressure and re-apply.... so still no joy... I honestly can't logic out a way to get this thing open without a key... Any chance you could take a look at a newer smartkey deadbolt and tell me I'm wrong? Got mine at HomeDepot today, is model #985 3 SMT CP K4, double-keyed deadbolt. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
I bought a master lock version of this and within the first minute I picked. I reset it with my own door key so I could see if there was any difference. Pick it once again easy. However, now neither original nor the new key doesn't work and picking it doesn't seem to be working. Any tips as sure it's not the most expensive lock out there but I would at least would like to get some use out of my money I spent on the lock.
Hey bill question, i have a smartkey lock going from my garage into my house, i only had one key left and its now in the bottom of a storm drain, if i manage to pick the lock would i be able to re-key it? Or am i stuck with getting a new deadbolt, if yes, where can i buy a cheap rake in canada? I own a couple sparrow single hooks but never had a need for a rake till today lol
I revisit videos to keep up with the knowledge laid down... I'm doomed if UA-cam ever get deleted .... Thanks for the smarts you kicked out to us @Bill
Where did you find that rake, I followed your links and can't find it. I'm a locksmith, and I hate running into the Kwickset smart key dead bolts. Figure I'll give your rake a try.
because they want to spp everything. You know how I know that. because I just ordered my first pick set and I only watch you, and SPP'ing, seems like the most fun, and honestly, I want to know how to pick things that i would normally lock my house up with. Don't worry, I'm "Staying safe, and staying legal!" but that's atleast why for me, and for me, I want to know how to open things that i normally would need to call a locksmith for.
At 0:56 you should say that if you mess up rekeying it you're screwed. That's happened to me on a knob lock, but with that you're able to open it up and reset it (or use the reset cradle if you have one)
Please help i need a inexpensive way to buy a pick and bump resistant lock for my medication. I been having problems with it being access when I am not home and no way to put a camera up
I have these exact same Palmer wave rakes (from Sparrow). I have a Kwikset 660 ( Gen 2) deadbolt smartkey cylinder which I just can't rake open. I assume the Kwikset deadbolt locks would be the same as the Kwikset smartkey padlocks? Of course, I'm a newb, but how hard is raking? lol.
That's funny because the ads I used to see run on your channel advertised it as unpickable and had dozens of old duffers jamming rakes into them with no luck.
Bosnian Bill the gen3 kwikset smartkey systems arent's bad. I don't believe correct me if I'm wrong, that this will work on gen3 kwikset smartkey systems. The sidebar keeps this from happening . You can decode them however to makea key, with a tool to the tune of about 300 dollars.
I know people have mentioned this, but the new versions are different and from what I understand the new sidebar design changes how it's picked. I can't come close to getting it, but I'm a noob.
The secret on that one was the flat bitting 100 %, why not show the SPP! The rake would never work on the one I have yours was perfectly tailored for the video lol!
I find they (the padlock version) start acting up (WRT to the key turning) and then just stop. This has happened on 3 locks already (never buying another, lol). One I had to get into and although I have no skills, I was amazed 10 seconds into my attack it popped open. Scary.
I kid you not, I got my wave rake from the genesis kit from covert instruments and honestly I thought this was fake… until I did it myself. I’m impressed
I just acquired one of these padlocks new in package and was unable to rake it open. I rekeyed it to a less radical biting and still was unable to rake it. I have some Quin rakes on the way, maybe those will have better luck than a worm and bogata. Anyone got any other picking methods that work to open these aside from the spp method?
How do you get it back open once you've started the rekeying process but then just pull the key out? I have one of these and thought it would be fun to "brick" it then try to get it open. Now I just have a padlock in which the original key doesnt work lol.
You can reset the code by opening it up and taking it apart, but I have to warn you, it will take a long time to re-assemble and you will probably have to find how-to videos to get it back together. I've done it for fun on a lock I bought to practice on and I prefer to never do that again.
same happend to me i tried to rake it open without luck then i did put the orginal key back in and the rekey tool with a bit of torque and shaking it opend up
I didn't read the manual and tried resetting to a key only inserted halfway. It worked but I was never able to reset the key again after that. Exchanged it at the store for a new one and won't screw around like that again lol
I can usually replicate bill's videos, but I can't seem to get the dang ol' thing to open. I'm not about to put one on my front door or anything, but they are not easy to pick.
Great job Bill. I think these locks suck and I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. These locks fail on my customers a lot but is great for business.(We only sell pin tumbler locks)
So, essentially, with these "new" Kwiksets, their advertising is true that they can't be bumped? IF that can, please let me/us know and any links would be appreciated.
so this is perfect for a gym locker, cause the lock pick guy would have to go ham on your lock around other people, and they would know what's up? I'm looking for a gym locker lock, I just got broken into with a dolor store letter trunny lock. I'm ready to upgrade guys, what's the safest lock for a gym locker room lock? I was considering a HYT Chain Key... Thank you all.
I know there's no easy way to gut this padlock, but I'm curious if this was the old design or the updated version that is being sold today. They changed the way the sidebar is retained. Supposedly (according to a picker on youtube who has a "pick and gut" of an old one) the new design makes it such that you can't get tension on the pins because of the bar. I don't know why you couldn't just pick the bar. Anyways, I'm a noob and I've been trying to pick this new style of SmartKey and have had no luck really setting more than one pin because of the sidebar. I would love it if someone much better than me made a video about it!
+bosnianbill I heard that if you got a thin nail like tool and pounded it into the reset pin, forcing it in, that you could then open the lock with any kwikset key. Best part is that the lock appears to function fine and anyone who had the actual key would just go on using it and not ever realize it had been compromised. I wonder if that's true. Anyhow, they're JUNK!
I can buy bolt cutters for $50. Locks are a deterrent. Fancy front door locks on my house won't make the walls any more resistant to chain saws. If a lock can provide a psychological advantage, then it is a better lock.
I think he mearly means to say that; If someone really wants in, they'll find a way. Most of what we think is protecting us or providing security is just "Security Theater". Illusions to make us feel safer. ...a few days later: [ I wonder why HowAmI took down his posts. He seemed a bit negative and over critical, but I didn't mean for him to kick rocks. I didn't follow up because his response to me didn't even make sense to me. I guess he countered by removing the comment I responded to ao that my comment no longer makes sense.]
I picked one of these before, took about a week of on and off, but then it just totally failed after being picked, couldnt rekey or even use the original key on it.
Raking will *not* work on these anymore if the bitting on the key is more complicated. It worked on this one because the bitting was quite basic. Also no matter how much tension you use none of the pins bind 90% of the time it seems.
I'd like to see a video on the schlage securekey locks, I heard there's some weaknesses on them but haven't really seen much on them, but I've had one that's been kicking me badly lately
I at first didn't notice it was a Schlage plus and tried using a half rake which didn't work. Then I tried the pick gun just for helluva it and it opened right up
there is a video of the gutting of the smart lock. But lets break it down... It's a wafer lock at it's core. The re-keying aspect of it it is jist a slider mechanism that slides the wafers into the new keys bitting. Bout it really. Nice video Bill, You are slowly showing everyone which are good and which are not so good.
Well, it's not really a wafer lock at its core. Those are rectangular wafers interacting with a sheer line. These are wafers with false gates interacting with a sidebar. I would say these are more slider / sidebar locks, albeit really cheap ones. The technique to single pin pick them is much more analogous to a sidebar lock than it is a wafer lock. You're spot on about the rekeying mechanics though.
Hahaha, I said there was at least one video of the smart lock being gutted... It was his, Listen to him he knows what he is talking about. Cheers Mate.
My buddy lost his keys called me over to get him in his house he had a smart key kik,I spent 20min trying to spp it never got it and I'm pretty damn good at spp,,,,I tried raking it once and it opened haha always try raking first might save you time!!! Thanks bill
I can't get either to work, but I kinda suck.
I spent a good hour with a city rake once, got no love. Pulled out a bogata and she popped open faster than a scared master lock. However now I think I may have been too rough on the tension.. must try again.

If only Master Lock listened to you and Bill on their lock designs.
Would like to see a more aggressive bitting... that key looked a little flat. I haven’t been able to pick these unless the bitting was somewhat flat.
Look we got a know it all... some one thinks they know everything and i bet he says he can probably pick any kind of locj
This channel is soo addictive. i never thought that lock picking could be a hobby. thanks B.Bill for the knowledge, and my newest favorite hobby. you are awesome, and the other lock picking channel's aren't even as fun as this one. good job!!

Where did you get that lock from ?

Omg, man it works, they are so easy to pick racking. Thanks a million, I won’t have to drill open these B’s anymore.
Amazing. It pains me sometimes how easy this looks.
is this lock 1st or 2nd gen? I have had no success with gen 2.... can you post a video showing generation 2 with sidebar rake?
I got a pair of the Smartkey door knobs just to match the deadbolts so I didn't require extra keys. I saw a set of those Smarkey deadbolts and thought "That looks really easy to break open." and left them on the shelf.

Hey Bill, Thanks for showing me how easy it is... Been trying all this past weekend to single pick this and I know it's do-able, but will try raking now!
You can remove the core bill! It's surprisingly easy to do, open the lock, use a pick to pull the sliding metal plate that's in the bottom of the opening towards the outside of the body and the core will fall out
I don't pick locks but ever since i seen this channel can't stop watching satisfying some how
@bosnianbill where did u get that Vice you have Padlock in? Thanks for the videos!
Good video Bill. I remember when these first came out. I thought they were going to make my life miserable, and now they do... I get these all the time. I just use my pick gun with light tension and sometimes a rake. If I'm in a hurry, I just use brute force. Junk...
Nicely done Bill. I have a Master lock one like that but for some reason key no longer works and cannot also get it to work with another key.
Could you pick a knob cylinder counter clock wise or are they only pickable clockwise? I will usually pick a different lock for entry.
Scary good at his job. So glad he's safe and legal!
Probably n.Not re-keyable without a lot of trouble. It would be much more economical to simply replace it with a new one.
Fantastic Video Bill & Very Cool To See. Keep up the great work. Nick.
Here you go: toool.us/images/equipment-waves.jpg

Bill, The pinning as evidence by your key was very similar to what a rake would be what if you keyed it to a different or challenging key
I just watched another video of one being SPP and gutted. I will have to dig one of my SmartKey locks out of the scrap pile and give it a go.
Your videos are the Best! Thanks for all the hard work with getting them out there. Does this apply to the Kwickset Smart key deadbolt also?
lockpickinglawyer made a video on how to SPP this lock
That bitting on that key works well for that technique can you redo this with a different bitting say with a 6 next to a 1?
I was thinking the same thing. Pick a key that isn't cut damn near straight across.
Bill, have you tried others with different bittings? Wondering if that has any effect of raking.
Thank you for this video! You made this look so easy!
Will that work when bitting is a little more complicated?
Bosnian Bill the gen3 kwikset smartkey systems arent's bad. I don't believe correct me if I'm wrong, that this will work on gen3 kwikset smartkey systems. The sidebar keeps this from happening . You can decode them however to makea key, with a tool to the tune of about 300 dollars.
Do you have a video of raking the deadbolt kwikset with the sidebar? That thing is a royal pain.
Not yet... sorry.
I know people have mentioned this, but the new versions are different and from what I understand the new sidebar design changes how it's picked. I can't come close to getting it, but I'm a noob.
In the case of a lost key, once opened in this manner, can you insert a new key and have the lock "learn" the new key?
This lock is not bad , you're just good at picking lock
Christina Palmer "Quinn Right" or Queen Right" pick? Looking to acquire one for my pick arsenal. Where can I find one?
Is it me or does the symbol on the plastic body looks like a rake-pick? :P
Like the manufacturer want you to know raking works
Normally I say "Kwikset" refers to how long it takes to SPP one of their locks. Maybe rake in this case.
What is the name of that base that holds the locks?
The secret on that one was the flat bitting 100 %, why not show the SPP! The rake would never work on the one I have yours was perfectly tailored for the video lol!
Question, is which generation smartkey is this?
Have the door lock version on a door that's mostly glass. The way I look at it they can always just break the glass. Great video.
I find they (the padlock version) start acting up (WRT to the key turning) and then just stop. This has happened on 3 locks already (never buying another, lol). One I had to get into and although I have no skills, I was amazed 10 seconds into my attack it popped open. Scary.
Comes with a bump key. Nice.
I kid you not, I got my wave rake from the genesis kit from covert instruments and honestly I thought this was fake… until I did it myself. I’m impressed
thats why i got 2 Abloy 242 profile and a Abloy disclock pro deadbolt
Does this work on the mid-late 2016 redesigned smart key locks?
I've done it for fun on a lock I bought to practice on and I prefer to never do that again.
same happend to me
i tried to rake it open without luck
then i did put the orginal key back in
and the rekey tool with a bit of torque and shaking it opend up
I didn't read the manual and tried resetting to a key only inserted halfway. It worked but I was never able to reset the key again after that. Exchanged it at the store for a new one and won't screw around like that again lol
When you get it open, at that point can you use the reset pin, insert a new key & rekey it?
What about picking one of these with more mixed cuts like 35364
Love your videos, I have learned so much from you.
Unlock it. Look in shackle hole use ice pick and slide retainer over. Cylinder falls out
So, essentially, with these "new" Kwiksets, their advertising is true that they can't be bumped? IF that can, please let me/us know and any links would be appreciated.
I'm new to your channel and I find the video's you make and your technique fascinating!
Hey Bill, I really want to send you a lock I can't get picked. It's a Burg Wachter, a tiny one. Can you let me know where to send it?
Just wow that was so easy to open.
*****
Ha ha you know mate.
so this is perfect for a gym locker, cause the lock pick guy would have to go ham on your lock around other people, and they would know what's up?
I'm looking for a gym locker lock, I just got broken into with a dolor store letter trunny lock.
I'm ready to upgrade guys, what's the safest lock for a gym locker room lock?
I was considering a HYT Chain Key...
Thank you all.
Hi where can I buy rake like yours ?
Show same technique with high low bitting
That key made that an easy rake!
When I come across these I just drill where the bolts are pop off the face and replace them with non "smart"' locks
were can i find the rake that u were useing
This must be what they use in the movies
thanks for this info bill. regards.
Needed here your voice lol 🌴😎 bill nice spp.
what about a over lifting attack? I know most wafer locks can be opened this way
I can buy bolt cutters for $50.
Master locks. :)
There is an example of a purely psycological security device. Master Lock knows how to do one thing better than everyone else... Marketing.
This makes me wonder why I lock stuff ;)
gracias por compartir esta tecnica me es muy util
I picked one of these before, took about a week of on and off, but then it just totally failed after being picked, couldnt rekey or even use the original key on it.
Great revue was usual
Raking will *not* work on these anymore if the bitting on the key is more complicated. It worked on this one because the bitting was quite basic. Also no matter how much tension you use none of the pins bind 90% of the time it seems.
Were can i get that rake at
Can you show raking it with a double Peak or Snake rake?
thanks bill i tried so many times to spp mi e
Thanks
Man, I miss ol Bosnian Bill...
I'd like to see a video on the schlage securekey locks, I heard there's some weaknesses on them but haven't really seen much on them, but I've had one that's been kicking me badly lately
I've only seen one of those in the field in my two years working on locks and my electric pick gun actually opened it in a few seconds.
+russej02 I don't work in the lock industry and so don't have the money for nice toys, I've heard of a way to zip/rake a specific spot but had no luck
I at first didn't notice it was a Schlage plus and tried using a half rake which didn't work. Then I tried the pick gun just for helluva it and it opened right up
lol I tried to spp one and I completely seized it up even the original key would work..... maybe could be reset as well
I would really like to see how they work on the inside. You dont wanna machine it open do you?
I gutted mine right after picking it. You can see the guts in my most recent vid.
+tumbl3r 👍
there is a video of the gutting of the smart lock.
In the winter my kwikset would not move so I took a pliers and sheared it open very easily.
Maybe a more challenging bitting would prevent raking...
