I feel like Spassky could have potentially ranked a little higher, considering that he beat Fischer and many other strong players with the King's Gambit of all openings. I understand that the competition within the tier list is extremely fierce however.
The king's gambit is a great opening.

@@buk1733 Depends on who you ask. I think Nepomniatchi claimed that it was sound and used it against Alireza in Norway chess. I agree that it is best for blitz though. Personally I currently play mostly the queen's gambit, but the king's gambit served me pretty well between 1000 and 1500 elo.
One of my favorite facts about Bobby Fischer was during his candidates run up to the world championship he went 18.5-2.5, sweeping two exceptionally strong grandmasters. When he 6-0'd Mark Taimanov, the Soviets were convinced that no elite grandmaster could perform that badly unless they were intentionally throwing and basically banned Taimanov from his chess and music careers until Fischer did that exact same thing to Bent Larsen.
Without Botvinnik, there would be no Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov or Vladimir Kramnik. You could say he was the father of "professional" chess as in approaching the game scientifically and teaching it systematically to produce chess masters.

I would pretty much agree with this. I think that Fischer had solved the mathematical problem of chess or sold his soul.
Although Paul Morphy wasn't technically an official world champion, he should be added to the list just for his role in chess history and moving the game forward.
Yes, Fischer was an absolute legend of chess, but he consistently said that Morphy was the true GOAT. Ben Finegold's opinions on Paul Morphy I think said it best: all other champions had prior theory and other masters of the game to look back at and learn from. Morphy had nothing. He became the best in the world by watching his dad and uncle play and then completely dominated every tournament or match he participated in and he did it with style.

Agree with the majority of the list, except for few minor but very important inacuracies (my p opinion)...which are:
(1) Lasker could be argued for both, superior tier and A tier.
(2) Saying the Fischer is the best of all time is tad bit biased (just based on the gap). Kasparov would beat him, Carslen would won easily--and even Karpov stands a reasonable chance (if you wanna argue contextual diferrences caused by the gap). That's why the prior avoided the guy.
(3) Putting Capa in any other category aside from S tier is a crime against the game.
(4) Anand deserves to be in an S tier, altough A tier can be argued.
(5) Karpov could be argued for both, A and S tier.

lasker is one of my favorite players, he was also a cheap shit who only held the title that long because he didn't allow anyone to contest it, but that's kind of sigma on its own if you think about it

Lol. Alekhine is S tier for sure. He didn't lose the World Championship. He was beaten by Euwe once and immediately came back and crushed him. He was the only one to beat Capablanca. That alone is enough to earn him the S tier.

Lasker was able to pick who he wanted to play for the title basically the guy with the most money, Casablanca had no one to learn from and didn't care about Hippos he went after the good stuff, Russia guy could not beat the other Russia guys kramnik and Karpov Karpov had a three game leed but the Russian machine said you are not R guy, Morphine had to chase down champions, Blanca had to come up with money but everyone sidestepped him even world war stopped Blanca for 4 years! Riga magic man had very little magic according to Hikaru , Riga man reported as sick all the time and smoked 24 hours a day

Nice and humorous list! I understand why many people regard Kasparov or Carlsen as the GOAT but in terms of dominance no one is comparable to Fischer who to this day holds the biggest winning streak at elite levels and the biggest rating gap between #1 and #2. Neither Kasparov nor Carlsen ever managed to demolish their main competitors in similar fashion to Fischer. Imagine Carlsen plays a match against Caruana, So, or Nepo and sweeps them 6-0. Not happening ever. Not even the great Kasparov was capable of such a feat.
Back then no one was any good coz they didn’t have any computers to practise with and very little theory. Carlsen has more knowledge and theory of the game than Fischer ever did. Carlsen studied chess way more than Fischer was every able to. Now everyone can revise main lines and good openings with a computer so its easier to become good. Magnus would destroy Fischer

Tbf yes Fischer destroyed his competition but Fischer didn't have to go through karpov every freaking year like Kasparov did. Kasparovs road to champion was more difficult than Fischer or Magnus altho I understand arguments for any of those 3 to be the GOAT

I think you need to at least put Kasperov and Carleson in the Ben S Chess teir. Them, plus Fischer are clearly top 3 and your list does not reflect this (maybe throw Capablanca in there because his name is just so fking awesome).
There are those who would debate which of the 3 is GOAT (I haven't studied it enough to say with certainty, other than that I am fairly sure Kasparov would be 3).
