- A permission from a Patreon member to visit and scout his Gold Claim in Colorado turned into a great day!
*The answer to your question or comment about trespassing*
If it's Federal Land and open to camping it's OK to be there, that includes hunting / camping. The claim owner has mineral rights and here in Colorado they usually carry a firearm. If the claim is private property there (should) be no trespassing signs.

"Not even a crumb" *Exactly what a miner who found the motherlode would say* but...
Thanks Cody Machler for watching!
I think you need to consider water flows at different times of the year. Looks like spring so you are at maximum flows, unless the stream has changed over time. Just an idea
A claim owner has the mineral rights only, he does not own the land, therefor anybody can walk through it, camp on it and even hunt.
Thanks BC5391 for watching!
Claim owner of a non-patened land cannot stop you from walking ,camping or recreating. Patented land on the other side of which there are thousands of claims in Colorado, do have the right preventing you from crossing, or being on that land.
Yes, MUCH better audio.... Thanks !!
Unless it is posted “no trespassing l
Late 60s early 70s on the rusty can
the can was opened up with what was called a church key and was used up till the late sixties
also I believe the last beer company to use steel cans was Schlitz Beer
Thanks Mike Collins for watching!
Old joke from the sixties.....
Do you know why German girls don't drink beer on the beach?
They don't want to get sand in their Schlitz!
Yup I remember church key's. Still got a few along with a few p-38's.
@@bobsullivan5714 that was so funny i forgot to laugh
The can opener is called a church key
Audio is perfect! I can hear your voice clearly, especially with the river flowing in the background! Another beautiful area!
Nice! It's alive!!
Just earned yourself a new subscriber! thanks for the videos.
Thanks Justin Ontman glad you enjoyed it!
Any day out digging is a good one. Thanks for the adventure.
Thanks Dirt:30 with George for watching!
Great honest video man, much respect for showing it how it is and taking us along for the ride, I enjoyed it and I didn’t get cold or wet , cool 😜⛏🌵🦂
Thanks respectanimals2 for watching!
You win some. You lose some. It's always fun watching your videos, thanks for sharing! Would definitely be interested to see a video on your microphone/GoPro setup 👍🏻
Alright I'll slap together a video on that audio system. Thanks for watching
It's just as much about the adventure some times than the finds themselves! Lots of good little hints to note in this one :-)
Exctly it's all about the adventure, I really don't even care about the gold. Thanks for watching!
thanks for the walk in the woods.
Thanks John Corby for watching!
Woot glad you took some ideas from other coments. I knew it would work better. It appeared to work way better. That low pressure zone that was up creek should have had gold there. My guess is you had to go deeper because you didn't find any heavies either. And where tree uprooted I would have dug deeper into the ground and tested. I have found nails shot and metals in Rappahannock River in locations of low pressure North of pyrite gold belt and was for sure certain I would find specks but nothing. I just think deeper past overburden in that low pressure spot would have revieled something. But I digress. Awesome video and for sure some VERY nice senery. Great video Shane. And liking that nugget bucket more and more. Cheaper than a sluice which I don't have either. Pan on All
Thanks for the comment and the nice words. Yeah the nugget bucket was really nice up there in the mountains, really easy to carry and set up.
Great video! Love your adventures!
Thanks orangekrush111 for watching!
Shane when you sample in the river dig down as deep as you can. I've made the mistake of sampling off the top and left. Came back dug it out and did well. Good luck great video. I'll get you down on the Arkansas with us this summer. THANKS
Ill remember that but can't promise Ill dig down very deep. Funny though you'd think there would be some float gold or some indication of gold, especially if they were pulling out 1/8 to 1/4 ounce of gold per weekend here. Thanks that would be fun on the Arkansas river, get some sody pops and dig some holes!
At least you made it outside! Have a nice creek in Michigan that I get flour out of. Had a couple spots that should have had lots, but alas, only a few specs. Found a hard turn gravel bar short way upstream where all the gold was falling out. Also found a a couple natural riffles (rocks and a log) on a straight shot after a bend. 1st pan had over 20 colors. That's great for Michigan. Keep up the effort. Audio was great.
Thanks Gui Jo for watching!
Thanks, another good video. That's the kind of conditions those Nugget Buckets work well in. It would be a pain to set up a sluice there.
Yeah definitely. Setting up a sluice here would've taken another 30 minutes away from scouting and digging. Thanks for watching
one thing about mountain ranges..they have their own climate...!! hope you stayed warm ! thanks for sharing your adventure !
Thanks J Shiloh Shea for watching!
Still a good video. Just to get away in the woods like you do is worth it, even if you find nothing. Your videos give me the itch to want to go out and learn how to pan. You keep doing your thing and I'll keep watching.
I agree man, the real gold is the adventure trying to find it. Thanks for watching!
I agree. I live in Florida so there is no chance to do any here. I have almost talked myself into buying a pan and just ordering some paydirt just to try it out. Thank you for all the great videos.
make sure until you are good at panning that you pan into a catch container...throw some bbs in with some dirt from your yard..when you can pan all the dirt out with leaving the bb's in the pan..you are ready..make sure to use jet dry in your water..It keeps the very fine gold from floating........good luck..and personal preference- buy a GREEN pan....
No letdown for me, that's for sure. For you and your permission's sake I wish you would've gotten some chunks a gold, but I thoroughly enjoyed this gold panning trip. Thanks from a Nor Cali Gal.
Thanks MerAngel12121 for watching!
Glad to see you got some boots. No gold but nice area! Maybe take a little fishing pole next time. Gotta love that smoke , and take another toke!!
Thanks for this video. We should all know that some days are lucky others can be a let down but no need to say sorry.
Absolutely!
Nice video. Some spots in Colorado are not about the bedrock but the layer that you are into. Keep looking tho! peace
Thanks E Stars for watching!
That's cool they let you check their claim out! Too bad the gold wasn't better 😟 but it looked fun at least! Arbor fab should make a classifier that fits the nugget bucket!
Thanks MrTurbo458 for watching!
Hi Shane, Love the videos! I live in on the south coast of England and loved watching your visit to the UK in April. Do you know if there's anywhere in the south of England where I could do some prospecting with a decent chance of actually finding some gold? Keep up the good work... John
Thanks John Dory for watching! I think over in Wales might be the closest area for you.
I think you have good ground indeed and believe if you had 10 buckets and just cleaned entire tree would be a different story, hard work for sure but i think you've got perfect ground. As always keep up the hard work man as i am itching to leave iowa and come and prospect.
Thanks Fox Trott for watching!
I used to and still do love Gold Fever. Tom said the higher elevations in gold bearing country had the bigger nuggets. I wish I knew where he found a bunch of gold. I guess that's a secret. And it was in Colorado. Did you like his show? I like Freddy Dodge he seems to know where the gold is. It's funny I don't know where any is. I"m sorry to say my son was at school at Santa fe High School in Santa fe Tx. He is ok but I feel a loss for words for the other kids and parents for their loss. This was horrible. I wish everyone could say a prayer for the people that lost their children or loved ones, if that is ok?
No i haven't, I really don't watch TV much. SOrry for your son that is terrible.
Tom Massie said that the gold would stick to the roots. and if you saw black sand around plants in the creek pull them up and get the dirt off of the roots. I did that on the Colorado river in Columbus Texas and found a few tiny specs. I couldn't believe I found even about ten tiny specs that you could hardly see..It is hard to find gold in Texas.
Yeah roots are gold grabbers but I try to avoid damaging that when I can.
Looks like a great day. Cheers
Thanks Colorado Gold Life for watching!
Nice videos. Happy prospecting from Norway.
Thanks glad you like the videos
The over burden might be really deep, so you won't hit gold until you get to bedrock. Try looking for old benches in the woods to either side of the stream. The might have stream meandered over the decades and left old benches and old exposed stream bed for you to dig into.
Thanks Stan Summers for watching!
Really enjoyed the video! Is there any evidence of an ancient path the river might have taken versus where it currently runs? And did you remember your shovel? Lol
yes I did and it broke. I followed the stream bed around and you can see on the banks some cobbles, but I sampled that as well and couldn't get any color. I would've filmed that for sure. Thanks for watching
Man I've been watching you for 2 weeks now and I feel like I watch you for around 2 hours daily and it dawned on me that I never subscribed to you lol I'm subscribed now. I Enjoy the videos , they are intriguing to me. Do you know if Tennessee has natiral gold?
Thanks, I'm not sure if there's gold in TN?
KleshGuitars only one way to find out lol. Also you are the first UA-camr to ever reply back to me. You're awesome!!!
Dude, that property is gorgeous, I like places like that, me camp, fish, an enjoy a gift like that place.
Yeah it's nice and quiet too. all kinds of wildlife, prospecting, fishing. Yeah totally great up there.
Bummer! Thought it would be a pretty good spot from what it looked like being out so far in the woods. Least the owner knows now theres not much as far as gettin alot outta the creek. Oh well. Cool place tho.
Rock on dude, Rock On!!
Thanks Rob Wilsn for watching!
Thats prospecting some times you get the gold and sometimes you dont. Yet another great vid thanks again.👍👍👍👍
Thanks Jeremiah Brockopp for watching!
awesome video , that's the way the prospecting is, there is no guaranteed gold in the river Good luck and happy hunting ! I got my coins and pick in the mail yesterday, Thanks, I'll have the package opening video up soon, it will be mixed into. a few other package openings. Take care.
Thanks Digging 606 for watching!
Lol.. i still open cans that way. Hole punch to drink or pour liquids into pan or let in air, when i open the other end it slides out easier.
Thanks Annette Petrin for watching!
Around 12:47 can you explain to me why your dumping the larger rocks without checking for pickers or nugget? Are you just focusing on flakes? You could be dumping back nuggets or black coated nuggets!
Right, just looking for flakes. Thanks for watching
When your out next ,imagine the river in full flood for spots to try. The river will not be moving gold in normal flow so good looking spots in normal flow will not be the same in a flood. Good luck
Thanks Jimmy pell for watching!
You might find some gold there if you find an area of the Stream where it has migrated from that stream hasn't been following the same path all its life try to locate if you get permission to go there again where it may have been flowing 500 years ago or thousand years ago typically a stream will migrate as it takes a Bend it will move further and further and further so find somewhere where there's a nice Bend in find a spot 20 feet away on the inside Bend and dig straight down you're bound to hit Old River gravel that's where you'll find the old gold I'm sure you know this already but it's just a suggestion I'd love to see you find a nice big nugget
That's the ticket.
Thanks Jason Gostonyi for watching!
even if this is an old clip, I think you are misunderstanding something. If the claim is on goverment land anyone can pass trough. Claim owners only own the valuables IN the ground nothing else. and if the claim owner has it on private land only the landowner can state if its private property or not, not the claim owner and it has to be marked out as private property on loads of places. Hunters can from both goverment and private landowners buy hunting rights so both propectors and hunters can have rights to the same land for different reasons.
Careful on the solo adventures. There are other things that walk in the woods.
I enjoy your hard work!
Oh yeah, I know. I get Bearanoid once in a while. Thanks for watching
The moss on the rocks looks old so there might be quite a bit inside it!👍😉
Thanks Rastaman Ralph for watching!
I've been looking into buying gold and silver ore on eBay and crushing it mechanically then smelting, any advice on this would be great.
That would be a fun experiment
Dope vid fella, now u know where to get a nice Christmas tree aswell...⚡⚡
Thanks jamie moore for watching!
Thanks
Thanks Joshua Garcia for watching!
Sometimes wind blown trees can stand up when you mess with the root ball . Safety first lol cheers ☠👍👍👍💙
Oh thanks for that info, didn't think of that one.
KleshGuitars I was a lumber jack buddy , seen some crazy stuff . windblown trees kill . Be safe my friend and keep on keeping on ☠👍👍👍💙
Good video, that's a nice camera, to bad you couldn't get more GOLD I bet that was a let down for you, but you did only did a few holes, where it was deep someone dredged that area, good day to go out in the wilderness, see you next video great adventure prospecting.
Thanks dad epic360 for watching!
Enjoyed the vid, thanks
Thanks NUGGET SHOOTER for watching!
you need to follow bedrock bud, there has or find big boulders an dig under them. Or like those deep spots where it gets dark, could already be close to bedrock. Love watching your vids though it does bring lots of memories of Colorado.
Thanks and yes the bedrock would be my first choice but unfortunately I cannot dig due to my back injuries. I do what I can and it's fun, so that to me is enough to call it a good day. Thanks for watching
Nugget Bucket now on your daily use items list when it comes to Scouting Gold? They sure did mine that place well!
It's great for areas that are difficult to set up the sluice. This thing you just need to set it up and pour water in. so Yes I will keep in my car! Thanks for watching!
I grew up in Aurora but now live in Colorado Springs. Unfortunately the closest decent place to prospect for gold is near cripple creek. I just got a 50" sluicer with a recirculating pump so I will be trying some spots near cripple creek here in about a week or so. I subscribed to your channel because I noticed that you too live in Colorado and although you mine far North of me I'm hoping your videos can help me with finding gold hotspots by identifying various minerals in our Colorado environment. If you could make a video specifically on what exactly to look for when scouting out an area that would be very helpful (if you haven't already). I know you touch base on what to look for in each of your videos but I've been looking for a video that really goes in depth on that subject in particular (in relation to Colorado). I appreciate the content and keep up the good work.
P.S Watch out for squatches while you're out there. lol
Honestly I just check online to see where active claims are located, and forums talking about gold rich areas that are open to the public. Those areas will have gold, and that's enough for me to try finding the best spots. If I knew more about geology I'd know exactly where to look, but other people have already done that work for us. Thanks for watching
KleshGuitars
Yeah I'm trying to learn a bit of the geology aspect of prospecting but unfortunately it's about as interesting a watch paint dry.
Yeah, I am more into Geography than Geology. Weird right>?
Seen you at Arapahoe bar yesterday
Was there today in your spot and cleaned up
Every hole we took dirt from we found gold
Awesome! Yeah there's a lot of float gold there for everyone. Thanks for watching
KleshGuitars - thank you for your videos, I enjoy watching them. I've watched a whole bunch of them.
Agree. I believe that giant mound/hill/mountain there is tailings from when they dredged the river back the late 1800's. I bet 20 guys could work that spot for 200 years with hand tools, and still be finding specs. For sure.
Thanks for sharing.
Love this one
Thanks Christina Kauffman for watching!
Good Idea MrTurbo458
Maybe we should make up a Classifier to fit that gold rush bucket , what do you think Shane?
I think the part where the classifier sits isn't deep enough for a metal one to be useful, and even if I did have a metal one, I think the plastic piece it rubs on would eventually wear through. Cool idea though!
Canny pair of gogs u got there! U should get a pair of neoprene camouflage ones, they are comfy and warm even in -5℃👍
Thanks Rastaman Ralph for watching!
around 1950's they were making the "flat top" beer cans....before that they looked like break fluid containers...
Thanks Elkslayer for watching!
the only reason I know is because I just found my first flat top..and kept finding these metal cans that are shaped like break fluid containers...found out they were the first beer "cans"..and I found my first beer can key today...
Hey man I found a small flake of what I believe is gold it shines with out direct light and when I crushed it in my pliers it didn't crush or crumble just bent what do you think does it sound like gold to you ?
Sounds like it, impossible to say without a test though.
sounds like gold..pyrite will break apart..would have to see how it behaves in a pan with some black sand
Drag it on paper if it streak gray iys pyrite. Some pyrite has .25% gold.
Those folks who were finding an eighth to a quarter ounce every weekend may have done it purely by panning. The missing bit of info in that case would be that there were 40 or 50 of them.
.
Do not worry. Nice Video. Gold will come. greetings Tom
Do you ever see a Bigfoot ? It looks kind of “squatchy” out there!
Hey brother. Didn't you score one of the large rucks from US Calvary? You know.....the ones they gave us the discounts on lol. I bet you could haul all your gear in that one pack, plus have the detachable assult pack to carry small shit in when scouting smaller areas. Couldn't help but notice you where humping in two bags.
I got this pack from a Green beret, traded for a spool of 550 cord. One of our Warrant officers gave me a whole box of 550 cord because it had water damage on the bottom, so I actually still have a couple spools left 20 years later LOL. I lost my assault pack a long time ago otherwise I'd have it hooked up.
If the stumps r that old they would have axe marks on them but alot of those seem very smooth suggesting they were cut down much more recently
True! Unless it was a handsaw
Dude do you have any videos where you find gold?
Sure do thanks for watching!
I did watch this whole video. I don't know what is going on here. Having computer problems or YT problems. I think I watched this one in reverse, not sure. Still interesting video as always. Thanks, Shirl
Lol that might be the computer sorry
What was the claim jumper evidence again ?
The footprints and broken plants
We called them "Church Keys" (can opener)
Thanks MrRockymntman for watching!
What a big let down for the claim.. Reminds me of a song "I bought Ocean Front Property in AZ". Thanks Shane
Thanks Oldies&Goodies for watching!
They can't all be winners. But the adventure looks fun. Beautiful scenery.
Thanks SalivateMetal for watching!
SalivateMetal I
I live in denver im there one a mounth i love your vids im a otr driver love your vid dude
Thank you tim karge!
Im stuck just using river shoes untill they decided to make boots over size 16 lol
Yeah that was the issue for me too. I have size 14 which nobody carries. 16 must be pretty terrible. Thanks for watching
wear size 17
A claim isn't private property unless it's patented. A regular claim is a claim to the minerals located in and on the ground at that location. Anybody can hike through, camp, or hunt. They just can't take any minerals.
Thanks Stan Summers for watching!
was a old beer can late 40s to 50 something prolly
Thanks hash glass for watching!
That sucks. Was hoping you would find like a gram of gold. Good luck on you metal detecting maybe you can find a big nugget to make up for the 4 flakes.
Thanks Matthew Wilson for watching!
Dont worry great video anyway! better luck next time!
Thanks giovanni trapatoni for watching!
1:06 to 1:34 the tree leans could be sign of Juvenal Sasquatch.
Unless the claim is a patented claim (giving both land and mineral rights), then it is not illegal be on the land. It is illegal to remove minerals from someone else's claim.
Thanks Henry Willis for watching!
So im layin around just chillin after work and watchin sum of yur old vids. Then i came up with an idea for ya. I said self. I think it would be cool to put some of yur gold on a guitar pick and give it away. So i thought. Grab a pik, hit it with spray glue, sprinkle some flakes, then put some kinda clear coat on it. Kind of like some shellac. Think it would look really cool. Anyway. It's just a thought. Rock on dude! ROCK ON!!
Cool idea man Lol
No let down that was good not to meany people have the lets go in them keep it up thanks
Thanks James Pyritz for watching!
It could be the foot prints belonged to a hiker. Not necessarily means someone was a claim jumper. The guy who owns the claim owns the mineral rights but not the land. People can move across the land, just not mine in someone else's claim without permission. At least, that's my understanding.
Thanks Robin Dunn for watching!
I've found surface gold before, makes you wonder if you're digging the right way lol, also an insult to all the giant holes that produced little to nothing.
Thanks Chase Carter for watching!
4:51 how did he know so fast the difference between mica and gold? i am a noob
As soon as I touched it, the shine went away because I moved the angle. Gold always shines no matter the angle. Thanks for watching!
thank you, after seeing the video i read all tips, but still i got impressed how fast you are :)
Beautiful country, to bad no gold
A Claim in most places only gets you the rights to prospect or mine the claim. It in no way is owner ship to the land.
Could even have be a claim inspector walking the land. Forestry agents, fire line inspectors all walk lands when spring gets here. My bet is a hunter scouting out where the animals spent the winter.
Thanks Richard O'connor for watching!
Dude the way the some of the rocks reflect the sunlight make me think it's gold sometimes.
Thanks Peter Nelson for watching!
Yep. It's usually just Mica or Pyrite. If it only shines in the sun, it's probably not gold. If it shines in the shadow, good chance it is. Thanks for watching
Ya it's just on your camera it doesn't pick up gold that well or that small of gold that well. But you can most of the time see sorta what you are looking at but reflections really don't help.
I am way to fimiler with Pyrite sents I live in California. It is everywhere.
Coarse gold probably on the bedrock judging by the loose overburden.
Thanks Jay Hanes for watching!
I need a kit for paning
I'll find one for you and link it in the description
Good video
Thanks Blayne Mote for watching!
Cool Video man sorry you did not find much gold if ya ever come with me to mine we will find some good gold.
Thanks Caleb Bennington for watching!
What if the gold is 10 feet under the ground?
Then you need to dig that deep to get it, right? Thanks for watching
if the gold on that claim was under the ground 10 feet deep down how would you mine it? Could you use bull doziers and machinery? what repair to the area would be required after the gold was mined?
Win some lose some. Still though, beats a day trapped at home.
Thanks Joshua Lorent for watching!
Sounds is good, the only thing thats wrong with it, is the breathing you can hear ("Blowing" into the mic). i dont think its a big deal for some, but for me, its kinda offsetting.
Oh good point. Up there in the 11,000ft elevation areas I'm usually always breathing heavy but I'll keep that in mind thanks for watching!
Looks to me like the property has been gone over already, especially since you were looking where they would have worked first.
I agree pete'spal, and thanks for watching!
That's prospecting it can be ruff sometimes if this Colorado this claim could be loaded but it would probably be in bedrock or in the side of the mountain most of the million dollar claims in this part of the country chased hard rock and they got filthy rich look for the darker color ore black or greyish colored rocks chase them down or sideways into the mountain that's how they got rich in Colorado just a prospector tip good luck guys there can be placer deposits there but the elevation would be lower I would suspect :)
Thanks REDMAN PROSPECTING for watching!
Its my pleaser brother good luck I'm betting you just scratched the over burden dig a few more feet findcthe clay or bedrock it will give you a better assays in the future
That would be great if you do a video on your new micro phone.
Will do thanks for watching Chris!
KleshGuitars thanks klesh.
it would have been hard for me not to have dug under that tree root. some anyway lol
Next time I will thanks for watching
Skunked... thanks for showing reality. No need to apologize.
Thanks Nick K for watching!
Well throw that Nugget Bucket classifier away and use your good classifier in both buckets.
Good Idea Douglas Ives! Thanks for watching!
