did you audition for the chilis when John left ? You should've. You're a very good player. But John was a great songwriter too, not to mention his beautiful harmonies.
This is fantastic dude! I would love to see you try to sound like John Mayer on that amp, mostly because Orange is nothing like the amp setup he runs haha
Thanks Dave, the tone works great on my Vox AC-30, just had to increase the bass and middle a bit cause of the smaller cabinet but all in all, it sounds damm close. Keep up the great riffs man
John Frusciante is my favorite guitarist of all time, that is the closest sound I have ever heard, great stuff man, can I have one of your amps man lol
The big grey Boss Chorus pedal was the CE-1. The CE-2 was the follow up of it, which was the first series of pedals in the typical Boss pedalbox form, like they still make them today. The colour of the CE-2 is light blue. Specially the first series made in Japan are still very wanted today (not cheap to buy). Thanks again for the nice demo, Dave. Greetz form The Netherlands, Hans.

I bought black CR120 head because of this and the other tone videos you made. Thanks Dave!! Going to be using 1954 reissue MIJ strat with that, awww yiss
Cool video. His live sound has more gain / distortion to it but that might be down to his speaker stack. Live in Hyde Park is a good example and a well produced live album. I prefer listening to most of their hits from that album as it's free from Rick Rubin's interference with the mix
Great video! I am getting a vintage fender twin soon, so it looks like i'll be spending a lot of time to coax his tone out of that amp. You really nailed it, I don't think I've ever heard that close of a tone out of an orange!
so I finally got to play my cr120 and its awsome! I love how the clean gets dirtier the harder you push the channel volume! the clean channel is much better than I expected because so many reviews were like the clean channel's not that great! I do agree the clean is different than a rockerverb or tube amp, but its just different, not bad. People just assume somethings bad because its different lol. Anyway thanks for pointing me towards finding my sound! I would love to do some experimenting mixing this amp with my Orange micro dark or my Marshall! Cheers!
every night before sleeping, i re watch your tutorial , especially your favorite part of the Dani california, practicing this heavy solo on my acoustic :D practicing cements the timing actually, getting better and better , thank you Dave ;)
+Tyler Hussin Thank you very much indeed. Glad you liked it. I know what you mean. I miss John in this way too but being a genius as he is he has to grow musically. :) Still though. :(
Hello. Cool video. Just a few things, firstly he does use lots of reverb, he uses a EHX holy grail, in pretty much most of his live sounds. The DS-2 is used in conjunction with a EHX Big Muff for his solo sounds (I use these together and it gives you that heavy, broken distortion you hear on his solos), and he uses a DS-1 for heavy chorus, like Dani Cali. And the DS-2/Big Muff/Dist pedals are all pre-wh10, not post. Also, all of the pick ups in his strats have been changed to Seymour Duncan SSL-1's. He thought they were original but when the tech opened the guitar he found SSL-1's, so John had him change the pups in all his other strats to SSL-1's, as they have the tone and are easy to get hold of.
One point ref old marshals I have to make is that they were very clean. I had a early 70s 50 and 100 plexis and , esp with a stat , they were super clean. Back then we were always looking for ways to overdrive the front end, it was a nightmare. These day's pedals are cheap and good quality so it's not so much a problem plus of course we have master volumes. I saw a vid recently talking to Eddie Kramer and he mada the same point
He supposedly uses Seymour Duncan SSL-1 pickups. He says himself in a few interviews that he's using Seymour Duncan vintage style pickups in both his '55 and his '62 strat, not the original stock pickups. I've got a set in my strat and they sound great!
Great vid Dave, and great playing too. I bought this amp based on your review as I mostly play along to RHCP, having been a fan since BSM came out. Your Tex Mex neck pickup sounds significantly better than my Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's, and give a more authentic JF sound. Maybe SSL-1s are in order! Keep up the good work!
hey man i love your videos. and you've got a great taste in music too. thanks for sharing your knowledge, you are an online professor for us studying guitar. thanks man pls keep making these videos. peace & love peace & love
Got myself a Ibanez Wh10 reissue too, and it really sucked the tone away like you said. Ended up selling it,but it was one of the best wah -sounds i heard. After some research I found Wilson Effects, they make a WH10 clone that is true bypass and has the authentic tone. Thinking of buying one! You should check them out!
kurtcobainsk8dudu I agree. The sound is unlike anything else and it really is amazing but the bypass sound is atrocious. Awesome. I shall check them out. Thanks for telling me about them. :)
If you are still taking requests I would like to see a vid on getting a sound like Mike Einziger from incubus. Around the Morning View, or a crow left of the murder era.
Hey dude, I appreciate these videos a fair bit. I was just wondering if you could make a video on improvisation tips? That'd be much appreciated. I'd really like to know how to solo like John, and or just add little licks. I understand chord theory and a lot of music theory in general but picking up improv is kinda hard. Thank you .
You should go out , meet John !! And do a rig rundown, I'm sure someone out there could organize it!! Having said that, I probably changes by the day, tempting 😎
subscribing. So clever, such frusciante sound, such good observations. There is so many videos "sound like john F without busting the bank" and they got everything wrong... because they have no love for the man. : ) Your views also are super interesting, like when you the only guitarist in band you have to sound big, never thought about it that way, I'm the only singer-guitarist in my band : ). And also that his sound is clean, but ... not really clean... shiet I never looked at that that way even though I was kinda doing it all the time. And orange and frusciante.. I played orange and was not impressed, to get such frusciantesque sound out of it is mind blowin, would not suspect that orange can deliver that. And the thing with the pickup, mine are super low, and sound super clean because of that I always felt the urge to experiment with their height but the luthier told me once to leave it cause it's good like that! I will surely try to get them higher to make the signal fatter. Thanks man! Super clever video, some respect at last for the guitarist that really deserve it : )
Love this series, have watched all the videos multiple times. how about a sound like series on a different amp , for example Boss Katana , because the CR120 is expensive as well for me
hey dave, its such a delight to see the energy and passion resonate in these videos :-) i was wondering, do you have any tips on how you like setting up the parameters on your chorus pedal...sorry that sounds monstrous, maybe for "Under the Bridge" ? i was given a Boss Ce-5 recently and, although i love playing with this pedal, i'm still very unclear of why i even turn a knob a certain way lol anyway, that was sad, umm.. How would you set up your chorus pedal for "under the bridge"?
Whoa!! my apologies,so i just watched episode 10 in your "how to play like frusciante" series and completely mind-blowned. the timing weirdly phenomenal!?! :-O lol i had just posted this and not a moment sooner am i watching a bulk of my question being covered in the latest episode lol . Anyways ,you should know all the insights and advise you've given so far and can give is taken with much gratitude :-) Thank you Dave,
Great stuff! love your playing too! AND YOU PLAYED WET SAND Also, you kinda forgot flanger, he uses flanger lightly with reverb a lot. like Wet Sand or Soul To Squeeze
You might struggle not having a mid dial but if you keep the treble very low, if not off, Bass high and use the gain channel set very low gain you should be able to get close. Thank you very much. :)
Shit dude I've been following you forever on Instagram (mattprice13) and had no idea you made YT videos. Really nailed it here especially with the fact that Johns clean tone isnt entirely clean, lots of people tend to miss this fact. I've got a few rhcp covers up on my channel if you want to take a gander (snow, tayt, dani cali) Cheers!
+MP13 Hello there. Haha. Small digital world we live in. Thanks very much for watching and I'll give your channel a watch when I get chance. Thank you for watching. :)
Dave HELP PLEASE. I bought an orange cr120 and I do love it. Pairs nicely with my orange ppc412 and Mexican Strat. But for some reason it sounds so off from yours. I didn't understand what you meant when you spoke about the "middle EQ switch" being half on distortion. I bought a boss ds-2 and an mxr micro amp which haven't come yet and I'm just praying it works. Would really appreciate it if you could get back to me. Love your videos, thanks for the inspiration.
+Austin Sefton I think you could get close but fenders do lack the mid range punch but it can be achieved. I would say that if you use your drive channel and keep the treble and presence low if not at 0. Have the bass on full or less depending on how boomy it gets. Crank the mids to 3/4 or full. Bring in the drive dial to where its just a little distorted. Not a lot but a little. You should be able to get close to John's tone. Let me know how you get on. :)
hi mate, nice vid. I thought the cr120 comes without a foot-switch option ? so you can switch channels by a foot-switch or did I miss something? 8:25 from clean to disto, and 9:05 straight into the amp? quite confused right now :D keep rockin.
Very informative!! This is definitely going to be my next amp! I have a fender cyclone(mustang pretty much) and a roland cube.. do you think i should first buy the strat or the amp mate?? Thanks for the in dept quality content :)
Hi Dave! first of all Thank you so much for this video cause it helped me a lot to improve my guitar tone.I'm using a fender mustang 3 amplifier, it's a very versatile modeling amp. At first I tried the orange ampli but it sounded terrible, the marshall was horrible (!!) too much treble I guess, the vox one is pretty decent but I feel that I'm still missing something. I got the gain at 4.6- volume at 10- treble at 4- mids at 5.5 ( but I constantly change them, I think they are the key to reach that tone) - bass on 4. No reverb. BIAS at -20% , a 4X12M cabinet and master at 7.0- 8.0. I also tried to cut some frequencies to get a fuller tone but I know that I'm missing something. Do you have any advice for my eq? Again thanks for your patience. Ciao!
Try keep the treble low and boost up the bass and mids. You also want the amp to be on the verge of distortion really. John's tone is really more of an overdriven sound. Its not clean. Its very bass and mid heavy. Try bass and mids at half. Treble low if not off and dial in the gain till its just starting to break up then tweak the mids and bass. I hope this helps. :)
I have a 2008 Fender Stratocaster USA running through a peavey vypyr 30w modelling amp and get pretty close thanks to your vids but I really want a Marshall
Dave enjoy your vids....love the tone of the CR120. I'm in the market for one however, I only see CR120"H" are available. The sales folk can't seem to give me a straight answer on what the H represents. Have you ever played through the CR120"H" or know if the H makes it differ from just the CR120?
would you be able to demonstrate how to split amps? I've been curious for awhile but really don't want to experiment until i know for sure what im doing. great video over all :D
You are one of my favourite guitarists on UA-cam. Excellent video as always! Just curious, do you think I would be able to get this tone a blues jr and a strat? My blues jr has the stock Jensen speaker (sandy blonde edition).
Thank you very much. That means a lot. :) You should be able to get close. If you run the volume on 9 or 10 or even higher to get a slightly broken up sound and have the eq with lots of bass. Maybe not full. Keep the treble very low if not off. Mids just add to find the nice place. Hopefully this will get you close. :)
Great videos David and so helpful! , is it more for straight to amp sort of guitarist? If so Pete Townshend would be a good option if don't Steve Hackett would be fantastic for me and a big challenge for you to achieve those magic genesis tones only with the amp :)
Really really really amazing!! What king of pickups are you using in ylur strat? And what strat it is?, and the last I can make this tone (moreless equal) with the jcm 800 cabezal 2204 model? I love the frusciante tone I your vids too! Cheers and keep rocking!! lml
Thank you very much. The pickups are just Tex Mex pickups that come with the guitar. The guitars is a Fender Roadworn. You can indeed get this sound with your amp. Thank you so very much again. :)
Man thanks for sharing all this stuff you've learnt. It's amazing :) ....I gotta a question. I am just about to buy my first decent electric guitar (MIM '59 reissue strat).. what amp can you recommend to get for Frusciante sound? Some thing reasonably affordable and not too big. I already got the DS2 and WH10 on my ebay watch list ;) and the How to sound like Frusciante playlist bookmarked :)
You did a great job this is definetly the best Frusciante sound thingy on youtube! But I don't know if i buy the Orange cr120 or a Fender bassbreaker 45 head for a Frusciante sound plz help me!XD
I will always recommend the CR120 over anything. Apart from the Marshall MG100 HDFX head. Plus the bass breaker might not get you quite there as John's sound is that british amp sound. Thank you and thanks for watching. :)
Great vid! I was just looking at that amp at Guitar Center yesterday and was blown away by how good it sounded. Spot on job with the tones. What pickups are you using?
You came really close man, awesome job! Have you changed the pickups in your strat? also, what was on for that Dani California Solo?, the DS-2 or the MXR micro amp
+Ishaan Kapoor I haven't changed the pickups no. There just stock tex mex pickups. For the Dani California solo i just used the dirty channel on the CR120. I used no pedals in this video. :)
first time I've heard someone play "Give It Away" THAT perfectly on UA-cam lol
Thank you very much. :)
***** no...thank YOU for blessing my ears with that perfectly played riff lol

U play so good men, nice video!!!!!
Thank you very very much. :)
Shit dude I've been following you forever on Instagram (mattprice13) and had no idea you made YT videos. Really nailed it here especially with the fact that Johns clean tone isnt entirely clean, lots of people tend to miss this fact.
I've got a few rhcp covers up on my channel if you want to take a gander (snow, tayt, dani cali)
Cheers!
I don't know how close I can come to achieving this tone with my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe... :(
+Austin Sefton I think you could get close but fenders do lack the mid range punch but it can be achieved. :)
Dude,you are such comedian :D
Love your videos, subbed! Please do John Mayer, thx!
+GuitarAtlas Haha. Thank you very much for subscribing and for watching. John Mayer video is coming later today. Hopefully. :)
hi mate, nice vid. I thought the cr120 comes without a foot-switch option ? so you can switch channels by a foot-switch or did I miss something? 8:25 from clean to disto, and 9:05 straight into the amp? quite confused right now :D keep rockin.
I am using the orange footswitch to switch channels. :)
Very informative!! This is definitely going to be my next amp! I have a fender cyclone(mustang pretty much) and a roland cube.. do you think i should first buy the strat or the amp mate?? Thanks for the in dept quality content :)
Thank you very much for watching and i would always recommend a strat. :)
this was really good! I can tell u studied him a lot haha.
+Zander Thank you very much. :)
cool stuff dude, how about Nuno Bettancourt circa 3 sides to every story?
+Laurikiwi Thank you. That'd be a good one. I'll see what i can do. :)
Hi Dave! first of all Thank you so much for this video cause it helped me a lot to improve my guitar tone.I'm using a fender mustang 3 amplifier, it's a very versatile modeling amp.
I'm so happy my videos helped you finding John's tone. :)
Nathan King how do you get that tone? i have the same amp
Nailed it buddy
Just rewatched this. Kinda weird seeing him with a full head of hair (no offense Dave it's kinda cool that ur keeping urs)
Dave enjoy your vids....love the tone of the CR120. I'm in the market for one however, I only see CR120"H" are available. The sales folk can't seem to give me a straight answer on what the H represents. Have you ever played through the CR120"H" or know if the H makes it differ from just the CR120?
The H stands for head. Its no different to what i have no. : )
Got it thanks mate!
would you be able to demonstrate how to split amps? I've been curious for awhile but really don't want to experiment until i know for sure what im doing. great video over all :D
Steven RHCP freak No problem. I'll get round to it very soon. :)
***** thank you :D very appreciated!
Great video!
Thank you very much. :)
Great!
+Cel Wylde Thank you. :)
Pedro Storms Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it and i'll see if I can hunt there tones down. :)
John uses a late 70's Yamaha SG, now. He hasn't used a Strat in years, according to him.
Indoodle. He said the strat makes him play a certain way he doesn't want to play anymore. The SG made him think differently. :)
Thank you for watching. I would highly recommend the Boss Katana 50 or the Orange CR60. : )
So I’m guessing the Marshall cab is 4x12 1960ax
Nope. Marshall mg cab.
Cool.
Can you do Kirk Weinstein of Crow Bar-Kingdom of Sorrow. He's known for using Orange but mostly older Transistor Randall rg100es
+DALE I'll see what i can do. :)
You did a great job this is definetly the best Frusciante sound thingy on youtube! But I don't know if i buy the Orange cr120 or a Fender bassbreaker 45 head for a Frusciante sound plz help me!XD
Btw I use a Fender modern player jaguar and i'm only 14 years old so I don't have a Huuuuge budget😹😹🤘🏻
I will always recommend the CR120 over anything. Apart from the Marshall MG100 HDFX head. Plus the bass breaker might not get you quite there as John's sound is that british amp sound. Thank you and thanks for watching. :)
+Dave Simpson thanks and keep up the good work!
Great vid! I was just looking at that amp at Guitar Center yesterday and was blown away by how good it sounded. Spot on job with the tones. What pickups are you using?
Thank you very much. I was using the stock Tex Mex pickups. :)
Thank you Dave! This video answered everything I wanted to know. On the vox front would you choose a greenback speaker over a blue?
Thank you very much and i wouldn't really have a preference. I would happily go with either. :)
