    did you audition for the chilis when John left ? You should've. You're a very good player. But John was a great songwriter too, not to mention his beautiful harmonies.

    The big grey Boss Chorus pedal was the CE-1. The CE-2 was the follow up of it, which was the first series of pedals in the typical Boss pedalbox form, like they still make them today. The colour of the CE-2 is light blue. Specially the first series made in Japan are still very wanted today (not cheap to buy). Thanks again for the nice demo, Dave. Cool video. His live sound has more gain / distortion to it but that might be down to his speaker stack. Live in Hyde Park is a good example and a well produced live album. I prefer listening to most of their hits from that album as it's free from Rick Rubin's interference with the mix

    so I finally got to play my cr120 and its awsome! I love how the clean gets dirtier the harder you push the channel volume! the clean channel is much better than I expected because so many reviews were like the clean channel's not that great! I do agree the clean is different than a rockerverb or tube amp, but its just different, not bad. People just assume somethings bad because its different lol. Anyway thanks for pointing me towards finding my sound! I would love to do some experimenting mixing this amp with my Orange micro dark or my Marshall! Cheers!

    Hello. Cool video. Just a few things, firstly he does use lots of reverb, he uses a EHX holy grail, in pretty much most of his live sounds. The DS-2 is used in conjunction with a EHX Big Muff for his solo sounds (I use these together and it gives you that heavy, broken distortion you hear on his solos), and he uses a DS-1 for heavy chorus, like Dani Cali. And the DS-2/Big Muff/Dist pedals are all pre-wh10, not post. Also, all of the pick ups in his strats have been changed to Seymour Duncan SSL-1's. He thought they were original but when the tech opened the guitar he found SSL-1's, so John had him change the pups in all his other strats to SSL-1's, as they have the tone and are easy to get hold of.

    One point ref old marshals I have to make is that they were very clean. I had a early 70s 50 and 100 plexis and , esp with a stat , they were super clean. Back then we were always looking for ways to overdrive the front end, it was a nightmare. These day's pedals are cheap and good quality so it's not so much a problem plus of course we have master volumes.
    I saw a vid recently talking to Eddie Kramer and he mada the same point

    He supposedly uses Seymour Duncan SSL-1 pickups. He says himself in a few interviews that he's using Seymour Duncan vintage style pickups in both his '55 and his '62 strat, not the original stock pickups. I've got a set in my strat and they sound great!

    Great vid Dave, and great playing too. I bought this amp based on your review as I mostly play along to RHCP, having been a fan since BSM came out. Your Tex Mex neck pickup sounds significantly better than my Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's, and give a more authentic JF sound. Maybe SSL-1s are in order! Keep up the good work!

    subscribing. So clever, such frusciante sound, such good observations. There is so many videos "sound like john F without busting the bank" and they got everything wrong... because they have no love for the man. : ) Your views also are super interesting, like when you the only guitarist in band you have to sound big, never thought about it that way, I'm the only singer-guitarist in my band : ). And also that his sound is clean, but ... not really clean... shiet I never looked at that that way even though I was kinda doing it all the time. And orange and frusciante.. I played orange and was not impressed, to get such frusciantesque sound out of it is mind blowin, would not suspect that orange can deliver that. And the thing with the pickup, mine are super low, and sound super clean because of that I always felt the urge to experiment with their height but the luthier told me once to leave it cause it's good like that! I will surely try to get them higher to make the signal fatter. Thanks man! Super clever video, some respect at last for the guitarist that really deserve it : )

How would you set up your chorus pedal for "under the bridge"?

    Dave HELP PLEASE. I bought an orange cr120 and I do love it. Pairs nicely with my orange ppc412 and Mexican Strat. But for some reason it sounds so off from yours. I didn't understand what you meant when you spoke about the "middle EQ switch" being half on distortion. I bought a boss ds-2 and an mxr micro amp which haven't come yet and I'm just praying it works. Would really appreciate it if you could get back to me. Love your videos, thanks for the inspiration.

    I don't know how close I can come to achieving this tone with my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe... :(

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  8 років тому +3

      +Austin Sefton I think you could get close but fenders do lack the mid range punch but it can be achieved. I would say that if you use your drive channel and keep the treble and presence low if not at 0. Have the bass on full or less depending on how boomy it gets. Crank the mids to 3/4 or full. Bring in the drive dial to where its just a little distorted. Not a lot but a little. You should be able to get close to John's tone. Let me know how you get on. :)

    hi mate, nice vid. I thought the cr120 comes without a foot-switch option ? so you can switch channels by a foot-switch or did I miss something? 8:25 from clean to disto, and 9:05 straight into the amp? quite confused right now :D keep rockin.

    Hi Dave! first of all Thank you so much for this video cause it helped me a lot to improve my guitar tone.I'm using a fender mustang 3 amplifier, it's a very versatile modeling amp. At first I tried the orange ampli but it sounded terrible, the marshall was horrible (!!) too much treble I guess, the vox one is pretty decent but I feel that I'm still missing something. I got the gain at 4.6- volume at 10- treble at 4- mids at 5.5 ( but I constantly change them, I think they are the key to reach that tone) - bass on 4. No reverb. BIAS at -20% , a 4X12M cabinet and master at 7.0- 8.0. I also tried to cut some frequencies to get a fuller tone but I know that I'm missing something. Do you have any advice for my eq? Again thanks for your patience. Ciao!

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  8 років тому +1

      Try keep the treble low and boost up the bass and mids. You also want the amp to be on the verge of distortion really. John's tone is really more of an overdriven sound. Its not clean. Its very bass and mid heavy. Try bass and mids at half. Treble low if not off and dial in the gain till its just starting to break up then tweak the mids and bass. I hope this helps. :)

    Dave enjoy your vids....love the tone of the CR120. I'm in the market for one however, I only see CR120"H" are available. The sales folk can't seem to give me a straight answer on what the H represents. Have you ever played through the CR120"H" or know if the H makes it differ from just the CR120?

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  8 років тому

      Thank you very much. That means a lot. :) You should be able to get close. If you run the volume on 9 or 10 or even higher to get a slightly broken up sound and have the eq with lots of bass. Maybe not full. Keep the treble very low if not off. Mids just add to find the nice place. Hopefully this will get you close. :)

    Great videos David and so helpful! , is it more for straight to amp sort of guitarist? If so Pete Townshend would be a good option if don't Steve Hackett would be fantastic for me and a big challenge for you to achieve those magic genesis tones only with the amp :)

      Indoodle. He said the strat makes him play a certain way he doesn't want to play anymore. The SG made him think differently. :)

    Really really really amazing!! What king of pickups are you using in ylur strat? And what strat it is?, and the last I can make this tone (moreless equal) with the jcm 800 cabezal 2204 model? I love the frusciante tone I your vids too! Cheers and keep rocking!! lml

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  7 років тому

      Thank you very much. The pickups are just Tex Mex pickups that come with the guitar. The guitars is a Fender Roadworn. You can indeed get this sound with your amp. Thank you so very much again. :)

    Man thanks for sharing all this stuff you've learnt. It's amazing :) ....I gotta a question. I am just about to buy my first decent electric guitar (MIM '59 reissue strat).. what amp can you recommend to get for Frusciante sound? Some thing reasonably affordable and not too big. I already got the DS2 and WH10 on my ebay watch list ;) and the How to sound like Frusciante playlist bookmarked :)

      I will always recommend the CR120 over anything. Apart from the Marshall MG100 HDFX head. Plus the bass breaker might not get you quite there as John's sound is that british amp sound. Thank you and thanks for watching. :)

      +Ishaan Kapoor I haven't changed the pickups no. There just stock tex mex pickups. For the Dani California solo i just used the dirty channel on the CR120. I used no pedals in this video. :)
