I Put Masters Brush Soap to the Test-Does It Work?

  • In this video I test out Masters brush cleaner to see if it can remove dry acrylic paint from my brushes. I also test out some of the other uses for it such as reshaping bristles.
You can apply some clean soap to the bristles so that you can shape them to a nice point. Once it's dry you can just knock the dry powder off of it and the bristles should hold their shape better.
I also tried using it to clean my varnish brush after varnishing some paintings with it. It works better than using dish soap which sometimes leaves the bristles hard because it doesn't totally remove the varnish.

    MASTERS BRUSH CLEANER
This is available in different sizes. It has a faint lemon smell to it and it's advertised as "Contains no harsh thinners, is non-flammable and environmentally safe." Below are links to where you can buy it online.

    NITRILE GLOVES
These are the best gloves that I've found so far. The fingers have a slight texture to them which makes them more grippy that other gloves. They're thin but still strong. I think my hands are a medium but I went a size larger and got the large and those fit well. Here's the link to the gloves on Amazon amzn.to/3TV9gX2
    ARTBIN
This is the clear ArtBin with the lift out tray. I also have the large 3 tray bin, here's my review of it. • Tame Your Art Supply C...

We used Masters brush cleaner when I was in high school. There was no brush too stiff or clogged for it. I’m a budget artist though so I use Speedball’s pink brush soap, but once I have a bigger budget I definitely want to upgrade to Masters.

Thanks, I never tried the pink soap I'll have to check it out. You can also save money by using dish soap for every day cleaning and then use Masters brush cleaner once in awhile to give them thorough cleaning.

I was surprised that it doesn't really smell either, it just has a faint lemon smell....like regular hand soap or something.

Hey Chris! We’re those brushes dirty from acrylic or oil paint?

That was Golden open acrylics, I forgot to clean them at the end of a long painting session and it had about a week to dry. The packaging says it works on oils, acrylics, and watercolors....I would assume that it works on gouache too. It's currently my go-to brush cleaner.

My go to is Murphys oil soap for dried on acrylic. It works amazingly well. I use old masters soap to reshape my bristles.

Thanks for the tip about Murphys oil soap! I never knew that the Masters soap could be used to reshape bristles until I made this video, it worked better than expected. 😀
