Part of your problem with landings is when your going down fast you increase collective all the way. Just increase it below 45% (aka hover) then you will keep going down just smoother.
That’s an easy way to get rpg’d. your better off going for a landing that’s got some cover like trees or hills. the best thing to do is a “J hook/turn”. Once you get the hang of them it’s a better maneuver to get in, unload, and get out quick. Can be done in around 30secs if you got 2 gunners helping load/unload
Just a quick tip for all helo pilots in the game. When flying into a combat area of the map, stick as close to the ground as you can (literally just above the trees). It's much harder for people to shoot at you and hit you with missiles.
It's too bad the new flight model made flying way more painful than it should be. While it wasn't perfect before, at least it was closer to how a helicopter actually responded to flight, where with the new flight model it's just...slippery to say the least.
Tips for Promising graduate of the Helicopter School of Squad 1. Land gracefully and slow than hard and fast It’s very tempting after watching many compilations and videos to try and jhook onto helipads and specific points. Don’t. Always Land safe. You gotta remember helicopters are the fastest vehicles in squad it doesn’t hurt to take an extra 30 seconds to land. Leave the Jhooks to the pros . 2. Read maps. Learn to anticipate. No point supplying up HABS that are about to be lost/ irrelevant. Vehicle marks also fall into this tip. Don’t land on your LZ if there is an enemy tank marked a couple 100m away from it. Even if it’s old. In last resort moments when you may need to land or resupply hot points. Ask for ground forces to move in around and help. Suppress anything that may want to shoot your down. Also doing a fly over low and fast too double check. 3.tag along with more experienced pilots. Offer to fly with them see how they make decisions why they do things a certain way also lend a helping hand in unloading. They won’t kick you out if you do 😂 4. When given an LZ to land by a different squad do not be pressed to land completely where they say You are the pilot trust your judgment the squad lead may nag. But they are nothing about how you have to exit or anything about you after you dropped them. Been killed so many times by SLs demanding being dropped directly on their point then getting ripped up after I’ve dropped them. 5.Helicopters do not provide CAS they are transport or supply runners not the above. 6.familiarise yourself with the different handlings of different helicopters. Eg The Russian hinds are the best all rounder. Id recommend learning to land in these The Chinese helicopters are on the more heavy side While the American Huey for the marine core is probably the most reactive and agile chopper in the game. All of these have their own little adjustments and tweaks good pilots can adapt too. 7.Refer to your time back as a infantry soldier. Maps like Talil are perfect for this example. Remember yourself running around talil and your squad leader put a tow ontop of the hanger. Yeh well know as a pilot previously being infantry you should expect to have some tow resistance why because it’s what you would do if you where trying to shoot you down.
Ahh yes the joys of being a squad pilot 😂. One of the most thankless jobs, but if you crash that bird, good luck lol. The whole team will turn on you so fast. Just a lil tip for anyone who’s new to piloting but the best way to land is to do a “J hook/turn”. Basically approach from one direction, pitch the nose a bit up and too the side while lowering the power. Turn 180 degrees. This will reduce your speed to almost hovering allowing you to either fully land or just hover, drop supplies and leave. Always try to look for a spot that’s surrounded by cover or has a lower profile then the surrounding terrain. God speed and I’ll see y’all on the front!
such a contrast from arma 3, i flew the transport heli sometimes when there was no other pilots on public zeus, only knowing how to fly, how to hover and how to barely land, crashed a lot, when trying to stop i got high a lot of times and got the whole team blown up multiple times, yet they all thanked me a lot, felt pretty good
One tip I'll give you that you should change is DON'T use your landing cam so much. You can't see around your helo and see trees around. Assign a free look button on your mouse so you can look around as you lower to the ground. Other than that, you seem like a decent pilot :)
I tell every pilot to NEVER use their landing camera, unless it's for a quick flick on and off for a moment. Learning to land is muscle memory and remember what you saw before your approach and picturing where you are, based on what you saw before you came to a hover. My best advice is to learn, up high, to whip your heli around and come to an instant hover in mid air, then learn to do it right above the ground.
