Why pipe dope instead of that white tape?
A few years ago I was "freakin' and called Beacon (plumbing)." They charged me over $700 to come to my house, cut the hot and cold lines, and stated that because this type of plastic pipe wasn't legal anymore, they had to disconnect and cap, and couldn't fix. (Ended up being a washer put in wrong a few weeks earlier.) I read up on PEX pipe and Shark Bites, and recently replaced the pipe, added Shark Bite shut-off valves and elbows (and an access panel thanks to Beacon), and hooked up my bathtub after two and a half years. Only cost me a little over $100 for parts AND tools. Love Shark Bite and glad to see your video!
I’m sorry. I once called beacon. Everybody loved bacon they say.. they don’t even charge me for “attempting“ to unclog my main sink pipe. I was shocked

sharp copper ends on the outside or the end going in the sharkbite can knick, cut the rubber seal or slightly damage it in the sharkbite.....especially when using copper....i always debur with sandpaper or a deburring tool, outside, inside and on the face going in

We just installed a water softener. The previous owners never installed a main house supply shutoff. We had to turn off the pump & drain pressure. While it still had water coming out without pressure, we installed a ball valve shutoff. By keeping it open, it pressed on with no problem & we could shut it off immediately to continue the re-routing to complete the installation. All fittings were sharkbite. No leaks. We bought the depth/marking tool to chamfer the PEX pipe & guarantee full insertion.

The only ones that don't like sharkbite, are the plumbers that don't want people to do it themselves.
Some plumbers yes, brainwashing is another reason. I feel shark bites are great. That's why I post this video. It gives none plumbers another alternative to fix themselves and save money.
Good vid. Thanks. You need to deburr the outside of the of copper pipe also when using sharkbite fittings because that is the surface that passes over the O-ring. Any abrasions on the O-ring will result in a leak developing.

I’m a female and remodeled my shower from the floor up and used shark bite! I love it. I’m getting ready to install my new whirlpool bathtub and out a new faucet and handles and I will definitely use these again!

Never put shark bite in an enclosed wall cavity. At bare minimum I would cut an access panel where you make the connections so you can make sure they are not leaking every 3-6 months. Shark bite is handy but should never be out in an enclosed environment where it cannot be seen. The failure rate is just too high.
If sharkbite was so unreliable, why are so many used, yet still don't leak? Plumbers forget to mention, everything can leak of not installed properly.....even sweating copper joint can leak over time.

The plastic insert on the Shark Bite is only for pex. I remove it when using copper or cpvc. Grab ahold of insert with needle nose pliers and pull out of fitting. Be sure to grab the insert well so I comes out in one piece.
That's what I was told. If you're using cooper take out the plastic insert

You can also use PEX in a wall. Both have similar lifespans.

Shark Bite sells a tool for reaming CPVC and marking the depth of the fitting by size ( 3/4 , 1/2 etc.) costs $10.00 makes the marking process much faster. I would use the tool on copper also. (just to mark pipe) Thank you for the video. : )

those plasric inserts are for pex to strengthen it so it doesnt collapse. you take them out when using copper.
You can, but my understanding from SharkBite is that you don't need to take them out when you use copper either.
The other brands you have to take them out for copper. Not sure, although never tried to take out insert on sharkbites brand
It's correct. They are superfluous when using copper. They are for pex use only

That shower valve does have marks on it indicating hot/ cold and shower/ tub. It's on the black plaster ring that you took off

I'm hearing a lot of ppl saying to not use a connector like these inside the wall. I want to convert my copper to PEX. I've heard that you would want to solder a female piece to both copper water pipes and then convert the rest to pex fittings. I'd like to avoid soldering. Is it save to use the 90 degree connectors, one connected to copper, the other end fitted with PEX inside the shower wall to avoid the extra work and materials needed to solder? Thanks!

You forgot to deburr the outside of the copper pipe as well. Reaming the inside is good practice to prevent internal turbulence - but deburring the outside is required to prevent damage to the O-Rings. You also might as well use Pex to save some money instead of copper.

I was in a hurry and forgot to do that step. I will make sure to do it next time. As for using Pex instead of copper, I have heard mixed opinions about it. Some people say it is cheaper and easier to install, but others say it is less durable and more prone to leaks1. I prefer copper because it is more resistant to corrosion and bacteria2. But I respect your choice and I would like to learn more about Pex. Do you have any tips or tricks for working with Pex? Thank you for watching my video and sharing your thoughts. 😊
@@claudetaylor7648, I'm not a plumber - just thinking about it from a DIY or homeowner's perspective. Copper and Pex have their drawbacks. Pex-A had a bad batch and got sued. Copper is prone to internal corrosion if for God forbid rust from your water heater finds it way to your pipe.
Since it looks like you're creating a new bathroom - I just thought Pex would be easier and faster to both install and repair. Especially if you make make it accessible for repairs (i.e. access panel).
Regarding pex, even if Pex-A had a bad batch and got sued - I would still use it for whole house. Naturally it wants to contract, meaning overtime the connections to fittings get stronger when compared to Clamp or Crimp. But, the main reason I would choose Pex is any non-professional can fix or make a quick fix without having to worry about burning their house down.
I would use Copper if it's put under a concrete slab, especially if it's hooked to the city's main and not vulnerable to rust from the Water Heater.

The supply inlet fittings are too close together. You can not put the tool in to remove the fittings. Also leaks if the pipe doesn't reach the o-rings to create that seal.

Question: Won't the galvanized & brass going together cause a chemical reaction that will cause corrosion? Would a dielectric fitting work for that application?
I want to go from a 2 handle system to one handle but don't want to sweat copper to connect to the new shower/tub valve. House was done in the 40s & still has very old plumbing.
I got a Delta Monitor Multichoice valve with threaded male outlets/inlets. Since PEX has gotten cheaper I'm going to switch to it but am trying to find the best way to do the tub spout. Tub spout is slip fit so I need something that will work for that (assuming copper is the best).
Also will be installing a brand new tub/shower system in another bathroom & converting a shower/tub to a shower so I will be able to recycle parts.

I got a Tectite, that is similar to the Sharkbite. But a connector I got, doesn't have the plastic insert, for the PEX. Does that mean I can only use the copper pipe on it? Does the PEX have to have the insert?.

I prefer soldering, but my when a plumber charges by the hour there's a benefit to using fast connections in the more complicated fixtures.
Edit: also in tight spaces with worn out wood where the risk of a wall catching fire is high. Without much room to work with compression fittings can be a pain in those cases too.

Sounds like the depth of your valve is not correct
I’ve had Shark Bite fail 2 times. I don’t trust them. So ire moved them all and switched to Watts fittings. Never had issue using Watts fittings.

Do not mix different metals, as in the brass female pipe thread to galvanized iron pipe thread. Eventually you will get corrosion by electrolysis, the iron pipe will be eaten away. I just replaced a tub/shower valve. As I removed the spout or spigot, the galv pip literally fell apart. I would not recommend plastic pipe either, as you may not get enough torque while tightening the fitting. I would recommend using brass pipe. A four and a half inch piece of 1/2" brass pipe just cost me $20 at a local hardware store, but that's the way it goes.
One more thing about Sharkbite, the tubing or pipe must enter the fitting straight in, if there is a slight angle, the fitting may not seal, I learned that one the hard way too.

If you cut the pipes 1-7/8 how you take them out if needed. I recommend to cut 1/4 longer to allow space for sneak the orange tool in to take out. How is that?
It’s difficult to remove them with the orange tool. Buy the gianneer disconnect tool.

To me it don't, to some plumbers it does. Only fittings I would not use tape on, is any type of plastic pipe.
