  • This 1994 Peavey Express 112 is a 65 Watt version of the Peavey Bandit 112. Both amps are drastically underrated and underappreciated solid state amplifiers.
    In this video, I talk about how much I bought the amp for, what's not working right, and what I need to do with it to make it 100% functional again. I also demonstrate the tone quality.

    To clean the pots, no need to unsolder and remove them. You simply take the chassis, turn it on it's side, and try to inject some cleaner from the back. If you can't get to the pots that way, then I would remove the board and try to clean from the under side. I also shoot some cleaner on the pot shaft and let is seep down into the pot body. That usually does the trick. The stock speaker was made by Eminence.

    These amps are great. Sturdy construction, good analog electronic quality and an amazing sound. I have a Studio Pro 112 Silver Stripe and I love it. I prefer it over any modern solid state, digital, hybrid and even many tube amps.

    I just bought an Express 112 for $50 Canadian which is currently $37 US.
    It works fine but I did the same thing you did, disassembled it, cleaned the pots and switches and the tolex.

    From Leo: You are a hard working man. If I have to desolder any part, it gets replaced. You are right, the old Peavey stuff was really well built and generally dependable. Any shortcomings of tone is generally remedied with a speaker replacement. The Emenence Cannabis Rex is my favorite, and not too expensive.. It seems like 1/2 of all the churches in the country are still running 20 to 30 year old Peavey PA systems and doing fine.

    I found a silver face express 112 in guitar center’s dumpster. Just needed a resolver of the input jacks and it was good to go. Hard to believe people think these are disposable amps nowadays.

    I got a bandit 112 for free because the owner thought it was broken because of the noisy pots and gain channel. It literally is doing exactly what yours did and this video. It's such a nice amp and like you said very underrated

    I like that series of Peavey. I bought a new Bandit in 1993 and always regreted getting rid if it.
    I currently own a Studio Chorus 210
    of the same blue teal series, 1992. It's a nice stereo amp with 2 X 10" speakers.
    2 X 35Watts RMS
    Stereo power amp ins L&R and pre outs to hook up other stereo effect.
    I got it for dirt cheap also, chorus did'nt work. Rewelded the Chorus "Rate" pot, cleaned all the othet pots and tightened screws of all inputs and knobs. The thing is like new, just like it came out of the store.
    Never gonna sell it ,They're too good for what you'll get for.
    Nice vid, nice to see somebody appreciating those amp's robust circuitry.

    I have one as a backup that I bought for 15 bucks because half the pots and Jack's needed cleaning ( stole it ) but only use it at home. The od channel and od eq / tone stack sucks so I clipped c17 , c15 out which cut the overly treble tone response in this channel and makes the tone stack intereact more properly. Then I changed over the 4 clipping diodes to red leds. These changes only effect the lead channel. Also changed over kill speaker because it interacted with the reverb tank adversely causing hum and feedback if turn up past 4 due to the size of the magnet and how close it is to the tank. I'm mostly a tube guy but this is now the Best sounding ss amp I've ever had.

    The older Peavey stuff is pretty nice. I am in the process of fixing up a Peavey Transformer 212 that I got for a decent price. Even with all of the new modeling technology, this amp that came out in the early 2000's, actually still works pretty good. I actually prefer the sounds from it for the country, classic rock stuff that we need to cover. Cleaned it up like you did and I need to replace some broken knobs that are encoders vs potentiometers. The replacement pretty much seems to involve soldering basically like what you did. Hopefully the repair works out.

    Of course tone is subjective but i bought one of these teal stripe bandits a couple years ago after trying the Blackstar id core and the boss katana and not really being all that impressed with either one of them but once i bouth the Bandit and i paid $240 for it, it became my favourite amp ive ever had i consider it a solid state version of an in between JCM 800 and a 5150 tone, ill never sell mine as i find the amp to be exactly the tone i always wanted, and yes i love 80s hair metal tone so thats probably why

    Typically, cutting out is due to corroded switch contacts on jacks. Either clean them when open, which works for awhile, or best to replace them with new $6 switch jacks from Peavey's parts dept. The jumper cable trick does solve it, to an extent. (Effects send/return, and on rear, preamp out/Power Amp in). I've gone through this with both my '92 Bandit, and '94 Classic Chorus 212, (stereo Bandit), Classic Chorus faceplanted curb on load in, broke reverb and Supersat knobs off, replaced both pots. Normal pre, and Lead post gain pots as well... Still cutout now and then, despite cleaning each jack's switch contacts... New jacks eliminate cutouts...

    • @KurtFuller
      @KurtFuller 4 роки тому +2

      No, he refers to both channels of the amp. The high and low gain inputs are two options to connect your guitar. They sound a bit "different". With "High gain" input, the sound has more punch, volume and presence, lead channel laso has more gain and distortion. With "low gain" input, sounds a bit more off overall and with less gain/distortion in the lead channel.

    • @davetriestofixstuff4744

      My biggest piece of advice is don't rush anything. If you're unsure how something is installed or how it comes out, ask around before you try to force it. I've made that mistake too many times in the past and ruined things in the process. I would also suggest practicing soldering on stuff you don't care about first. Nothing stinks more than having to bridge lifted solder pads because the iron was too hot... Good luck though! And feel free to ask any question you might have, I'll help if I can!

    • @davetriestofixstuff4744
      @davetriestofixstuff4744  5 років тому

      Hi there. The red spray can is electrical contact cleaner I get from Harbor Freight. I used to use DeOxit, but it's so expensive that I prefer the stuff in the video. The can is twice as big and costs half as much. That said, the DeOxit conditioner spray (comes in a black can with green writing) is a good investment.
      The reason I desoldered the pots is because some of them were so dirty that they needed a lot of contact cleaner. It was just easier to remove them from the board to get to openings on the top.

So much so I would have to turn the bass down and add a little more mids . Did you pull out the gain knob ? THIS ISN'T LIKE A TUBE AMP. Country on this thing sounds as good as it gets with a compressor also a ts9 tube screamer with a strat and single coils rips a great Steve Ray Vaughn sound. But you will never get a good tube amp sound from this solid state amp

    • @davetriestofixstuff4744
      @davetriestofixstuff4744  3 роки тому

      Yes, it should most definitely have a 3 prong power cable.
      If you go to about 13:11 of the video, and look in the lower left hand corner of the screen, you’ll see where the ground is connected to the chassis. The main power cable had a black wire, a white wire, and a green wire coming out of it. The green wire is the ground.
      You can buy a computer power cable for really cheap on Amazon or eBay and just cut off the end to make a power cable that will work for this amp.
      Good luck!
