    Im korean living in Singapore. When i first came SG, I was shocked that singapore has much cultural diversities. I never expected that cuz im from homogeneous country. Almost every Korean born in Korea shares same cultural experiences, similar appearance, and etc. Yes we have limited ability accepting other cultures. But we, especially young Koreans are trying to learn how to understand and respect cultural diversities. And aft 6mth in Singapore, im slowly getting used to living here and understanding that even in same country, people might has different race, nationality, appearance, perspective, and etc. AND I LOVE EVERYTHING ABT SINGAPORE EXCEPT WEATHER :)

      @연우희 , my singaporean friends are getting quite fed up with the koreans in singapore. the females visit indian temples wearing tiny shorts a la Kpop but Kpop is selling entertainment, vising indian temples in tiny shorts is another matter, not funny. my indian friend took some photo of this incident.
      Some Korean organisation in Singapore should teach Koreans how to carry themselves when they are in Singapore and Malaysia.

    I feel like people who insist that Singaporeans are petty, opinionated, etc. etc. are speaking more from personal experience with actually being in some sort of relationship with a Singaporean - hell, I think locals are the ones who'd be quick to say that Singaporeans are 'kiasu' in a hundred and one different ways. Trust me, the general public is nice enough. People move when you ask them to, they'll offer help when need be, we're all just a little timid to be That Guy™ who shows any sort of initiative. Y'all need to appreciate just how clean our streets are, by the way, it's almost miraculous that we're all so instinctive when it comes to not littering (- much, at least).
    On a side note, Koreans are scary yo. The number of times I've been shoved around on the subway by ajummas and ajussis is unreal. Even when that happens in Singapore, I hear a distinct murmur of 'Excuse me' before I'm bumped to the side. And why 'murmur', you ask? Because Singaporeans stay quiet in the train and loud people get nasty stares for being impolite. We should not be portrayed by the incidents that happen, rather our reaction to the incidents. When it comes down to it, the goody-two-shoes attitude is drilled so far into our brains that we don't even realise it until we find ourselves condemning bad behaviour along with the rest of the train compartment in that silent Singaporean way.

    as a korean born now canadian person, I have a special place in my heart for the people from singapore. I can relate to them in so many ways. I love the fact that they speak english as a default (but not everyone from singapore will speak english, I know). I instantly become friends with every singaporeans I meet. I think Korea and Singapore also have a fairly similar history, having been through a sad history of colonization but coming out of the ashes post world war period and they both go on and achieve great financial growth milestones like no other. I also love singlish, can't wait to visit singapore and eat chili crabs lah! :)

    Hi, im a malay-muslim and i studied in korea on an exchange 2 years ago and i fully agree with your sentiments. I went there with my chinese friend and whenever we told the koreans that we're from singapore, they'll look at me in disbelief and ask me again. Haha, my friend usually had to clarify that yes, im also from sg. Then they will gesture at my hijab and ask whether singaporeans also wear them. We try to explain that sg is multi-racial and they just seem so amazed. But generally, they do view sg in a positive manner.

    From my experience Koreans' impression about Singapore usually splitted into two types, first type is thinking that singapore is just something like hongkong or macao which are overseas chinese states established by southern chinese descendants, the second type they think singapore is like some hybrid state of western culture and SEA aboriginal culture and most people there are either dark skinned aboriginals or fair skinned eurasians.

    Aiyoh. Chinese where got eat Nasi Lemak with hand. Maybe if got Ikan Kuning, then have to use your fingers. ~~ switching Lingo ~~ On a serious note, what makes us Singaporeans distinctive is our accent when speaking English. It is just so recognizable. Besides our love for food and being influenced by multiple cultures, I do think we have a certain trademark people can recognize...and I would say it is more positive than negative in our general attitude and mannerisms.

Koreans ususally don't have much image of What singaporeans look like or who singaporeans really are. We do have certain images of the city itself because of the tourism, but not the people or the society and culture.

    During the first few minutes of your video, I thought you were Korean, and did get a surprise when you revealed your Singaporean accent! I lived in Tokyo for a couple of years, and is an interesting contrast to what Koreans think of Singaporeans and Singapore:
    - most don't know where Singapore is (some are familiar because of MBS and the Merlion)
    - Singapore is some breakaway Chinese nation (similar point) founded by Chinese on "stolen land" from Malaysia
    - Singapore is just some free city where nobody is a citizen (e.g. if you are Chinese, you came from China to work in Singapore)
    - the general image of a Singaporean (self-imagined I suppose) is actually someone who looks rather Pacific Islander, perhaps similar to Filipino; most colleagues in my Tokyo office could hardly find me all the time if they didn't know how I look beforehand
    - Singlish is easily mistaken as some Chinese language
    - Singapore is a clean country
    - Singaporeans do not know how to use chopsticks, only fork and spoon
    Can think of these so far only!

And they equate Southeast Asia with being Chinese haha. Btw, perhaps you should do a video on the topic of nasi lemak in Seoul- the best eatery that serves it.

    • @SingaporeanInKorea

    • @eszee7474

      simon foxbat I don't think he's ashamed of his Chineseness. As he's mentioned, Singapore is a multicultural county. Yes, the dominant race is Chinese, however it has, Malays, Indians and Eurasians in the mix too. So..he is right in saying he's against a "Chinese Singapore". If you look into the country's history, the Malays are the indigenous people of Singapore. People of other races are immigrants who settled on the island and made it home.

    • @eszee7474

    • @eszee7474
      @eszee7474 6 років тому +3

      simon foxbat That's where you are wrong when it comes to Singapore. As I've mentioned earlier, the Malays are the indigenous people of Singapore. The government is right in recognising this country cannot be a Chinese Singapore, or Indian Singapore or Eurasian Singapore. The Chinese, Indians and Eurasians know they are descendants of immigrants, hence it's a multicultural, multiracial, multi religious Singapore, period! Malaysia = Malay, because majority is Malay and they are the indigenous ppl of that country. Same goes with Thailand. This does not apply in Singapore's case.

Sometimes it's pretty shocking to me how they perceive things like cultural diversity, gender equality, etc. But I know not all Koreans are like that 👌👌

    I agree with koreans dont know much about other asians countries and how they look like. Im not a singaporean but i do heard from a friend who went there (they’re malays) that the koreans would stop and took selfies with them cos the koreans rarely see tanned asian people. Its great that they made effort to get to know other races

Like every country has some kind of known products or exports in the world but not Singapore.

    Not all Sgrean eat Nasi lemak with hand base on cultural reason. However, despite off that we do see all races born and went through military training as Sgrean. Like most countries general public are quite helpful and acceptance as long as you respect the culture and local law. Because It's a small country and almost every Sgrean at some point have travelled out to the world that make it so easy for tourist to blend in when travel to Singapore. Though we might be a recognise nation in many countries yet I can't said everyone Sgrean is well behaved or well mannered still got long way to go.

    Singlish is not a dialect. Hokkien, teochew etc are what we called dialect.

    • @SingaporeanInKorea
      @SingaporeanInKorea  6 років тому +3

      Singlish is a dialect. Singaporeans have a wrong understanding of what dialects mean. In fact, Hokkien is a language and teochew is a Hokkien (min nan) dialect.

    • @aaang1
      @aaang1 6 років тому +3

      Hokkien is a Southern Min dialect group spoken in the Fujian Province in Southeastern China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and other parts of Southeast Asia, and by other overseas Chinese. Hokkien originated in southern Fujian, the Min-speaking province.
      While Teochew is originated from another part of China.
      Here’s the wikipedia for your easy reference:
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokkien
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teochew_dialect
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singlish
      Colloquial Singaporean English, better known as Singlish, is an English-based creole language spoken in Singapore.
      In my own words, it is just a rojak English. That is why some students did badly in their English “O” levels because of their bad English. I’m Singaporean, but I just want to get the facts right. Instead of letting people get the wrong information.

      But we need to recognize also the fact that not all Singaporeans are of chinese decent. Singapore is a multi cultural society, not a Chinese society like China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. As such, its not correct to use the term "Chinese counterparts".

Why are Singaporean Chinese celebrating festivals that has completely no meaning to Singaporeans (winter solstice when there's no winter, lunar new year when we don't even use the lunar calendar, using customs that don't even exist in China where we thought it came from?). Start from adopting the Singaporean identify and breaking the fake Chinese identity!

    Hey bro, just here to give some constructive criticism. Your English (yes I know it's singlish) is great but unfortunately your thoughts are kind of incoherent. Even as a Singaporean I find it hard to follow your thought process as you jump from idea to idea, not to mention constant circling back to similar points. How do you think non-native English speakers are gna understand it?
    I recommend maybe trying vlogging from home and following a script (or just pointers) to gather your thoughts so that it's easier for viewers to digest. However, if you do want to adopt this walking vlogging style, even simple editing would go a long way. You have an interesting topic (albeit slightly misleading) ((I'm assuming most people thought it would be you interviewing Koreans on their views)), but it fell flat from your delivery. Good luck!
