Yes!Its just 3 months - 1 term. What you said in yr video is very true! Indeed most of my classmates are mainly Chinese. KR is just more focus on TOPIK. And prior to studying in KR itself, I hv studied kr in SG and if I compare, studying kr in sg is very fun, we practised speaking a lot during class. The only + point about studying in kr is that you are in the country itself and hence can put to use the language we learned.. :D and its not cheap to study in kr university lols!

I didn't take Korean studies seriously until I started Yonsei KLI, went there for 4 terms and ended up living in Seoul for 1+ years. Not keen to ever stay in a non-English speaking country again but I recently went back for a short holiday after 4 years and absence does make the heart fonder.

You are so right with your comments. I went to Korea to study korean for 4 month and was really tough. We had exams every day and at the end of the week more exam, we wrote a lot of essay, and did a lot of homeworks. On weekends I was so bussy doing homeworks and study that I couldn't enjoy Korea as much as I wanted. I felt I was there only to pass the every day exams but not to really learn, also, the classes were really fast. In term of speaking, most of the people improve other languages more than korean (that's true). I spoke with my professor about study korean again in a slowly way and she told me ''Only private academic". Another things is that korean learning method its about memorize, they memorize everything... In conclusion, I think that if you have a good or hight level of korean you will be fine, but if you have 0 knowledge, you are very basic or you are bad at memorizing you will have a hard time study In a korean university.

That's how feel about language exchange apps/sites: The people who talk to you are trying to learn the language you speak and you in the other hand are trying to learn their language and we only converse in the only language in common- English. That's why I got demotivated to engage in those apps... Really unproductive! We end up talking about boring stuff in English and never get the change to practise my Korean and whenever I would write something in Korean the other person would reply in English! Like always -_-

When I first time studied in Singapore I felt very hard to catch up with school class because of language gap..(btw I'm Korean if you remember me) so my parents sent my younger brother to language school in Singapore before he went to secondary school but he could not converse in English that much after a year... Me and my brother both realized that just facing the ''language gap' with real life native speakers make you learn the language better and faster although it is hard to endure isolated feelings. I agree that Korean university classes for foreigners or any other Korean classes in Korea will not help you dramatically. But if you come to Korea for the language,I hope you guys to get benefits or opportunities to learn real life Korean language from real life natives. Language learning does not come from class especially the conversation skills.

I am going to study korean at university without the year abroad in Korea mainly bc of financial reasons but also because I truly think that it would be so stressful I would not be able to fully enjoy korea and the language. At first I was a bit sad thinking I will not improve my korean as much without the year abroad (I've been self-studying korean for 4 years now) but then again I really plan to put a lot of time in learning it so I hope I'll still achieve fluency and in a less stressful environment ofc. I've also heard the fact that ppl speak more english than korean even when they go to korea so many times which sucks because I can get the same experience here. Also apparently making korean friends is not easy at all. But in terms of getting to know and really experiencing the culture then you just have to go to korea. But I would rather go there to travel around than cram for the next exam.

I know this is almost two years later, but I wanted to say I feel like this happens when I studied Chinese in China. For the entire time I learned Chinese School didn't even help me 20% it was more like 8%. instead of 6 levels we had 8 when I was in level 5 a Korean student who took HSK 6 was in my class, all of are exams where geared to HSK exams so even in our speaking class we focused on reading and writing. the less I focused on the book vocabulary, and the more I listened to locals outside of class the more I learned how to speak.
For my Korean friend when she went back to Korea for a job interview, they said her English was the best out of all applicants, but because she didn't take a test she isn't qualified. it seems like there is a fundamental problem on what is "learning" a language.

Are these language specific programs? I say this because I am taking a summer accelerated Chinese program. 3 hours of class M-F, 1 hour speaking session which reviews what was learned in class an hour before(in groups of 2 or three students per teacher), and a 1 on 1 30 minute speaking session geared toward your pace and building upon/further review of what was learned in class. I've been here for almost a week and already carry short simple conversations and pick up the context in conversations of others. I think enrolling in a program vs enrolling in a university is drastically different, especially when it comes to class size. My class is composed of 7 students with 1 main teacher, and 3 other teachers for the focus and 1 on 1 sessions

I took Academic Korean at Ewha for a semester in 2016 and they really focused on making sure students were not only proficient in reading and writing but also speaking too. In fact, we were only able to speak Korean while in the class room (unless we had a hard question to ask our teacher). Hi Limpeh, yes I also studied Korean at my university in America and the learning experiences were extremely different. At my home university, the lessons were all taught in English and although we did have frequent test and quizzes our teacher did not care if some students left the class without being able to put a simple sentence together from memory. There was no real push for us to learn the language, but just pass the test and quizzes. However at Ewha, the learning was very accelerated (we often covered 2+ chapters/class) we were pushed to learn the language because it was the only one we were allowed to speak in the class. This was only the case for the academic Korean classes though as the Ewha also had a practical Korean course that was less accelerated.

Oh lol no I consider that much more advanced. But hopefully I reach that level soon on my next study abroad trip to Seoul

    • @SingaporeanInKorea
      @SingaporeanInKorea  6 років тому +5

So its a low intermediate level in which u could do standardised greetings and basic q and a type of "conversation". U can reach that level very quickly with intensive programs anywhere, dun have to come to korea for that really.

Sadly there are no Korea classes in my country. Nowhere in this country there's a Korean teacher. Language exchange apps don't work for me! I was thinking of going to the Korean Embassy in Mozambique to get some information about learning Korean and if there's anyone in the country to teach me but I'm not sure if they give that type of service.... Help please
    Advices :(

Hi Limpeh! Really informative video you got here. Due to that I do have a small question I wish you could answer. If one must go to Korea, and they know their Korean skill will be used in business setup, wouldn't it be better for the person to go to Yonsei with great essay and reading skill as compared to 'casual' Sogang speaking experience? Please answer disregarding how it's better to learn the language at your home country rather than Korea, cause I'm just genuinely curious to what extent the Sogang speaking program can be used as a 20% step up on life in both daily and formal situation. I have a lot of Korean friends who helped me practice outside school which is great in advancing my skills, but I couldn't seem to find anyone talking about whether the speaking course would be helpful for you in formal situation. Hope to hear from you soon!

    • @SingaporeanInKorea

Honestly, it really doesn't matter which school because you are still going to be conversing at a VERY beginner level either way and not understanding more than half of whats going on. Neither schools teaches specifically business conversation anyways. Just like English, business conversation can be VERY different and needs seperate learning.

*I didn’t take any exam b4 neither in my korean class because it’s not an official professional class hahaha😂 But my teacher’s chinese/english not that good so she will speak more korean to us when we start to use a more advance level text book

you are the kind who should come to and learn as I said in the video. :) If you want to further your speaking, go sogang, if you want to pass topik, go yonsei or even hanyang university (hanyang is the cheapest of the 3)
