Hiii...I'm Surabayan. Welcome to my city. 😃
I want to explain a little bit of philosophy that I know about the design of the Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument). Actually this is the shape of a nail standing upside down. When the nail stands by showing its pointy side at the top, the more it is pressed the more it stabs. It means "the more people are attacked, the more they fight". This is a symbol The Battle of Surabaya, Surabayan (people & Indonesian Military) against allied troops. Which is the world's biggest war after the end of WW2.
If there are also Surabaya citizen reading this, CMIIW. 😄

Wow..thank you for visiting my city. It's a shame that the Sampoerna museum is currently closed. There is a lot of history related to the Chinese community in Surabaya in the past. Especially cigarette businessmen. The special food in this city besides lontong balap is rujak cingur (meaning salad with shrimp sauce and cow lips), rawon (beef black soup), fried duck, kikil sapi (cow leg soup), coconut chicken/beef satay, tahu campur (its mean tofu mixed soup with shrimp sauce, vegetable and beef and etc.. anyway enjoy your trip..Stay healthy and happy guys..

    History about Surabaya Kota Tua:
A lot of it burned down during the war and the owner rebuilt it in newer style of the 40’s and 60’s, since this area is still very active business area unlike Kota Tua Jakarta, so you wouldn’t find Museums or Cafes but Shops and Warehouses. Only during certain days of festival you can enjoy the touristic atmosphere of the area, but otherwise there is nothing.
Surabayan “Kota Tua” is in Jalan Tunjungan, where you can find the Touristic stuff, most notably Hotel Majapahit and the new Museum Siola.

    • @AlexS-oj8qf
      @AlexS-oj8qf Рік тому

@@NataliesPassport Well, there is reason to go back then 😄
      I would suggest:
      1. Start at Siola Museum
      2. Walk to Hotel Majapahit
      3. Get the Majapahit High Tea package where they give you FREE tour of the Historic Hotel
      4. Walk to Governor’s Mansion, in the afternoon there’s usually activities there.
      5. Walk to Alun-Alun Surabaya, there’s Museum underneath the colonial building. Also sometimes there’s activities.
      6. Eat at Zangrandi Ice Cream across Alun-Alun Surabaya, while at it book Evening Boat cruise just behind Alun-Alun through the City Website (I think it’s free)
      7. Get to the Dock and enjoy boat ride along Kalimas
      8. After the boat then walk to City Hall and end your trip there 😄 Maybe go to Grand City or Delta Plaza for dinner afterwards (which is walkable).
Also the highlight of your Surabaya Visit should be the Culinary Experience. It lacks amusement sites but the food is rich and varies. Bebek Sinjay, Rawon Setan, Soto Pak Sadi, Bu Rudi, and Soto Ambengan is among the top Food Place to visit.
Hopefully you enjoy your brief Visit. 😊

Surabaya in the past was the only one that was dubbed the city of heroes in Indonesia, because all of its people took the initiative to openly declare war on the colonialists, namely the Netherlands and England. And because of the strategic location of Surabaya with the port, it is the entry point for trade in eastern Indonesia. Modern-day Surabaya was led by Tri Risma Harini, who was once the best mayor in the world because she was able to maintain a traditional village in an urban environment, and made innovations in bureaucracy and administration, as well as in the environment, so that Surabaya became increasingly popular. many international awards won one of them being the most popular city in the world. What is clear is that the history of the people of Surabaya against the invaders has made Indonesia recognized by the world and Surabaya has become a city of achievements. that is what makes Surabaya the second largest in Indonesia. Because Surabaya's track record and performance are more valuable than just the nation's capital in general. ♥️😊

What I like about your channel is that you always show positivity spirit and getting it easy vibes while exploring Indonesia. I know that sometimes it’s infuriating or stressful especially when you traveling around with public transport as you were. I knew it because, even as a local, I also get stressful too when I did that! 😅 non-fixed schedule, non-fixed price, subpar facility, etc, etc. , but somehow, you just get managed to get along well with it.
I see that we’re trying to be better on these regards. Maybe it’s not that fast, but I knew that we will reached a better public transport development somehow in the future. Buying a thousand bus/train is easy, but to develop a system and people who understand that it needs to be maintained, fixed, and managed, is hard. Doing it too fast, and there is a group of people that could protesting with whatever reason it is (Praise to God that we are living in democratic country anyway, it’s also their right to voice their concern). Well, enjoy our country and stay safe 😊

Surabaya is known as the city of 'Heroes'. Because here there was a great battle between Indonesian fighters and allied troops (Dutch and British) who wanted to re-colonize Indonesia after our independence from Japan. At the beginning of independence, Russia really helped Indonesia's war equipment (ships, submarines and fighter planes) to defend our independence.

    Welcome to surabaya!
Fun fact, in the national monument park, the place is also a mass grave for Surabaya residents who died in the war, we remember it as Heroes' Day which falls on November 10, that's why Surabaya is also known as the city of heroes. And at the bottom there are also museums.
And yes, we have a lot park/garden here ❤

The most important thing that is often put forward to Indonesia that you may often see is diversity, ethnicity, language, culture and religion where you usually coexist and respect each other, hopefully it can be a separate experience for you while in the country with the largest Muslim population in this world.

13:26 Well, the Old City of Surabaya is actually bigger than that of Chinatown. There are the Arab Quarter (Ampel area), the Chinese Quarter (the one that you were walking on, and the Dutch Quarter that is spanning from Tunjungan Street to Gemblongan and Bubutan. Most part of the Old City has been occupied by Chinese businesses and now becoming stores, warehouses and factories.

6:08 And those bars are to prevent motorcyclists using the pedestrian paveway. It is also designed to allow people with wheelchairs to pass by. That small space is wide enough for the HEAD of the person in a wheelchair to go through.
However, for pedestrians somehow these bars are not wide enough especially those with big body.
