Hey Sam. As always, amazing craftsmanship! I'm wondering if you could share your process (if you have one) for picking out wood at the store. I've found a lot of wood is warped and quickly become frustrated bc I can't find good pieces to start my project. I hope I'm not alone in this struggle. I haven't seen anyone talk about this, so if you feel like sharing I would love it!
Yes, please! I moved into my new home and bought a temporary desk which was such a waste of money. This is exactly what I need. I’m sure it will hold a double monitor stand.
Idk if this was answered but you can get the best ones that you can. If they are warped, you can joint them. If you have a table saw, you can try out this jig. Here ua-cam.com/video/vrYjc3G1vgo/v-deo.html If they aren't too bad and are just a little warped, some clamping force will do the trick. I did this when I made shutters. Clamped them together and used cauls (small runners to help keep them aligned flat), then pocket screwed them.
Nice job Sam. I like the clean lines of the frame and its marriage to the traditional wood-stained top. When I first saw the opening, I thought it was a welding job with a wood top ... I was wrong. Thanks for sharing and I will continue to follow this series of your Dad's office.
I like the way you gave the all wood construction the appearance of having a metal framework. I wonder if giving the top a slight overhang along the front and side edges might have made it look a little more sleek.
Nice job looks great I would have extended the tabletop to the wall on both sides or put a lip on the back edges. Would not really need it except for the open-looking heater at baseboards looks like it would catch stuff falling off the desk.
Sam, I am so bad. I always reply to your work and I didn't this time in a timely manner. Anyway, that desk was genius. I literally thought I was seeing steel legs and the way you set it up fooled me. Great idea painting the wood black. It looks awesome.
It's just beautiful. I was looking at a home office desk with my husband since hes working from home now and we spotted one for over €500 !!!!!!! And it looks exactly the same as this one..... you've always been my DIY inspiration in my home... so as the weather is FINALLY getting a bit better here in Galway Ireland 💚☘💚🇮🇪☘💚 and I can start bracing my tiny 6x6ft shed where all the magic happens hahaa I think I'll surprise him and give this a go..... I'll tag you if I manage something even close lol.... love as always x
Great desk build. Thanks for sharing. Do you realise how experienced you are already? How many DIYs would have assembled the L-shape desk in their shops and only then find out that it's not possible to get it where it needs to be?
I love the table legs. I thought it looked like steel frames if i hadn't watched the whole video. Excellent job. Just a question, does the desk shake or kinda flimsy using 2x2's. I'm a new DIY'er so i haven't used 2x2's for desk legs. I'm a fan, and loved your build.
Love it!! I need to make a desk for my daughter soon and she’s super into L shaped desks rn so this is perfect. ~ p.s. the links to the plans and blog post are for your awesome slatted wood record player storage. 💙
Was it more cost effective to tmake the table top out of three pieces of wood glued together or would a solid piece of wood be better? And did you plane the wood before attaching them to one another so that the top would be flat?
While I will say that the room had a certain charm in it's "before"-state, it looks much better now. Out of curiosity, did you consider making the panels go all the way to the wall, or is that just my desire to be able to put clutter everywhere without it falling down. Thanks for sharing, Sam!
Hey was looking to the links in the description section but notice there isn't a link to the chair that was pair with this diy desk which is awesome. Was hoping you can send me the link or let me know where I can find it. Please and thank. P.s like most people thought the legs where metal frame as well lol
hey, sorry if it sounds dumb, but ive seen in a lot of desk projects that people when building the top of the desk cut boards to then glue them together, is there like a structural reason for that? something to do with the integrity of the top of the desk? im planning on building one but ive never worked with wood before. also, are there any communities where i can interact with other woodworkers? like a fb group or something similar (im sorry for any grammar errors or misspellings, english is not my first language)
You HAVE to share, with your neighbor, from, St. Bernard Parish...What paint did you use, for the desk frame, besides primer?? I'm DYING to know! TOTALLY thought this was going to be wood/metal project, from the looks of it! That's why I HAVE TO KNOW what paint you used!!! Please and Thank You! Tell Dad I said, "Who Dat?!" ⚜️
Isn't team work the best?! :-) great project. I'm still wondering my why your desktop came out nice and flat and mine always warp :-( I know I'm doing something wrong but no idea what!
It is! Also... A lot of that has to do with choosing the wood before the project even starts. You want make sure that your pieces are relatively flat before gluing them up. Also alternating the grain pattern helps a lot!

WOW... I really like this piece. At first glance it appears to be a metal frame with a wooden top. Well done 👍🏻👍🏻 Thank you for sharing this.
