Besides, this trial is not about proving him innocent, it's about establishing whether he did it intentionally or not, he's definitely going to prison, the only question is for how long. In many cases like this even the lawyer would tell his client that regardless what happens he's going to jail, the only thing he can fight for is a lower sentence and possibility of parole.
They don't care how he feels, but if he can't assist in his own defense, he could have grounds for appeal. They have to insure that he gets a "fair" trial.
