Negotiate your NP contract like a boss

  • The NP hiring process is vastly different than the experience you had as an RN. Contract reviewing and negotiation has many facets for your consideration and for your haggling. You can and probably should ask for more, and there are multiple "buckets" of money from which to negotiate.

Bree, this has to be the most informative video on NP contract negation I’ve watched. So grateful that you rolled out of bed one morning and wanted to talk about this. I needed this! I don’t know how much I can negotiate as a newly certified NP, but thanks to you, I know what to look out for and how to possibly negotiate it. Thank you!

Thanks for this info! What about vacation time? What is the norm for this starting out?

Same as PTO. With shift work you may not be offered any. If that’s the case ensure your base rate/salary is on the highest end. If you work a regular 9-5 o hear people say they start from as low as 2 weeks. Which to me is quite low. I feel like I’d aim for at least 3.

I have my first NP interview and I have no idea what I’m doing as far as negotiating. Do you wait to negotiate after the interview? Or do you ask about these things at the end of the interview? I don’t want to make a mistake and blow everything.

Oh yeah definitely don’t do that! Negotiation is for once you have them hooked. Wait until they extend you an offer.

@@BreeJuskowiak ok that’s what I thought. So I should just focus my questions about the job itself in the interview? I’m so nervous! But I watched your video about NP school interviews 2 years ago and I’m finishing school in 1 week!

Many of the health systems in Pennsylvania do not budge with their starting salary for new NPs

So unfortunate. We are vastly undervalued and I think if the market is tight, they know they can lowball and not negotiate.
