Too bad it's a bit harder to tip a 300 pound motorbike like that. Luckily, at least for traffic lights that won't trigger, we can call that a malfunctioning signal light, and therefore legally treat the light as a stop sign, after waiting a credible little while for the light to fail to change. At least that's how traffic law works here in BC, and I would expect that's usually the law elsewhere.
Just a safety tip for your shop. Don't leave flammables(fuel) outside your shop. Its a good idea to buy a flammables storage cabinet and keep those flammables in the cabinet, in your shop.
Even on motorcycles there are some stubborn traffic lights that just won't change. Of course, tipping something that weights 800 pounds is a little more problematic. I find that if you have one of those strobing lights that's visible in daylight, the traffic signals are more likely to sense that I'm there.
To Tip #3 about waving, I'd add that there are times when you might want to wave but taking your hand off the handlebar doesn't seem like the best idea. In those cases another kind of wave is to keep your thumb & palm engaged the grip but raise your fingers to gesture the acknowledgement. The gesture can also include a brief nod of the bike helmet for additional emphasis. I find myself doing this a lot and not just to other riders. Riding in my neighborhood I make the friendly gesture to acknowledge neighbors (who may be walking, driving their car or out mowing their lawn). I also like to acknowledge car drivers who've extended me some curtesy like giving me the right-of-way while they wait for me. Not only am I thankful but I hope in such circumstances the modest acknowledgement of their kindness will encourage them to continue to be courteous to bikes riders.
Thanks so very much Kyle for the email update. I'm one of the BlackBird November guys. Please keep us informed. I am hopeful for a November delivery. Thank You. Hopefully all of your customers understand the situation and the logistics of pulling hundreds of parts together. I know you have little to no control of this. I also feel bad for you and the pressure it puts you under, not wanting to disappoint your loyal customer base. Chill Dude, it will all come together. But do keep us up to date.
Yeah that tipping the bike does work, even though I have tripped those sensors with a metal dust pan. However, a lot of traffic signals are moving away from those style of sensors, and starting to rely on the use of Camera's. Now those Camera's are supposed to detect a person standing on the roadway intersection, however, sometimes they do not but a small flashlight will trigger a camera sensor to recognize a bike or person is at the intersection. If you do not have a flashlight, a small mirror will often trip the camera sensors if you can produce enough of a reflection from a light source. FYI I use to work for a road construction company, and this is what DOT told me when we was installing a new intersection that had camera's instead of sensors in the ground.
Not too long along I saw a clip showing the camera feed from an intersection that had a cyclist outlined in a rectangle as a recognized object. Seems to be working well here in the Phoenix area as I often get the green left turn arrow even when I'm the only vehicle there. There are also a few bike lanes that have the ground sensor installed, presumably set to a higher sensitivity.
Standing the bike up to manoeuvre - If you have full coverage rear fenders (and/or stuff on a rear rack), just be careful with how far you tilt the bike over, especially if going down a stairway! Speaking of which, make sure you keep hold of that rear brake as it can help you control the bike as you 'drop' down each step. Also need to watch out for the angled ceiling above the stairway!! And it's of little use going up the stairs unless you're going backward
The wave...I tell people I feel like I'm in a parade riding an ebike because it seems like every person I pass, man, woman, child, elderly, whatever but they always look with that perplexed, "Why is he not pedaling?" look and wave as I go by.
At about 1:50 in the video I found that so helpful. I live in a neighborhood that is going downhill and getting high crime. I'm afraid to leave my e-bike outdoors even during the day. So I have to take it up the stairs and park it in my living room. Another thing that works is using the throttle.
really had some problems getting my bike into our 3rd floor vacation condo but will definitely try the rear wheel technique to get the bike downstairs now!
If you live in a gated community, you should have the spot stripped for bikes so if you are in just the right spot, you will trip the gate. If the gate is such old technology that it won't trip, make sure it is mentioned in the maintenance reports so if any work is ever done on it, it will be upgraded. We have to have our town tell the state to repaint the symbols when they repaint the road each time. I don't know why the state contractors can't remember to do it. In WA state, you have to wait for an entire light cycle before you can assume it isn't working for your bike or motorcycle.
An easier way to trip the gate or stoplight mechanism is to place a good size magnet on the bottom of your bike that way the metal detector circuit embedded in the road will be able to pick up the device you are riding. This works for all types of equipment and transport such as scooters, motorcycles, skateboards, and cars that are small or have a lot plastic parts
Well here goes. I've been watching e bike videos for about a year and after pondering between ordering from rad, utah, amazon and bolton, I'm going with Bolton. I only afford to buy one bike one time period. I need little help choosing what to get.
I believe Bolton could get you any brand/model you desire, not only one's he has in stock. I chose Himiway, but Rad, Biktrix and many others are equally as good. Do some research, and give 'Bolton' a call!
I just used the "Use the seat as a handle" trick to get my bike down a cluttered hallway. I've been doing that since a teenager with my ten speed. Rearing it up would probably have been easier. Good stuff.
Nice tips. There is a condo park with a railroad type gate near by...wonder if they will let me in...???...probably come after me with their golf cart if I do get in. Picture the old Key Stone cop chase of the 1920’s 🤣🤣
Great gate tip,,,,I was at a gate yesterday and had to wait for another vehicle to open the gate....the rear wheel maneuver tip is good also unless you own a Foxbat...fender doesn't allow you to stand it up verticle....that is something for Bolton Labs to consider, a bobbed fender......
Here in Massachusetts, there are signs at some intersections that say something like: "bicycles stop here for green." I used to think this was a very odd instruction and felt like defying it... "I'd rather go on green than stop." It turns out that they were indicating where a bike should go to activate the green light sensor.
Very helpful video. I have a traffic light near my home that does not see a lot of automobile traffice so sometimes its either a long wait for a car to trigger the senssor or just run the red light. Iwas surprised that even my massive steel beach cruiser does not trip the street sensors and am very intrested to try your approach. Ill report back. Thanks
When I first started motorcycling, the standard motorcycle "wave" was a raised closed fist. I guess these days that might send the wrong message. Times have changed.
Off this subject but, I have a HyperScorpion and find the tires to be a little slippery. Can’t find replacements that will give me a little more grip without a significant loss of speed or range. They are listed as 20 x 4/14. What’s your thoughts?
Finally I been jumping up and down like a chimp at the air port in Concord lol.thx for the great tips now I go try it. Flying is awsom freedom just like ebikes.
Can you do a video? Add a front hub motor (350) to the Walmart hyper eride. It would have thumb throttle. Clean battery (water bottle?) and wires hidden to keep clean appearance. Tap into peddle sensor. Or swap out controller w higher amp one to spin both wheels with stock bike set up. Want easy power upgrade for hill assist
I have a Steadyrack and need to put it on it's back wheel to park it. I have been flicking it up because that is how they do it in all the promotional videos but it's a 23kg e-bike so it's not that easy. I thought it might be easier if I could just have something behind the bike to allow me to pull it up, never occurred to me to use the brake to hold it. So much easier using the brake; it's one of those Doh! why didn't I think of that a year ago?
Didn't know the sensor trick. On the other hand mileage may very on standing the bike on the rear wheel to navigate hallways and doors. If you have a full rear fender it might be in the way. Alternatively your bike may be slightly too long to get through the door standing up like that. I have both issues on my ride. If I lean back to the balance point my fender drags and the front wheel hits the door jam.
I often wondered if it's the 'metal' that signals the sensor, but are you saying it's the 'mass' Kyle? Many e-bikes are aluminum now, so it it were where a steel frame was needed, I originally 'thought' you would need steel within your frame, but I'm now assuming that's not the case. Years ago, I was delivering a large truck to an Electric Company locally, and after putting it in it's location, the gate closed and couldn't figure out how to get the gate to open...so upon looking around the site a bit, I found an empty 45 gallon drum, and rolled it over to where the sensor was, and it then opened of course. :)
Kyle, how do we keep mud and debris out of our peddle assist? Nothing worse then going through a patch of mud and then the peddle assist starts to buck and jerk as it powers on and off!
I am going to try that bike tilt trick next time I'm at a stoplight that won't trip. Beats jumping off and hitting the crosswalk button--which I have done, even on a motorcycle. Note to self: don't try tipping the motorcycle...
Nice sentiment, but I think there is too much of a "divide" between bikers and bike riders to expect a motorcycle wave in return. I think even some Harley guys only wave to other Harley guys, haha.

i will try it!

Very helpful tip, I've had problems with the sensors before.
Tripping the sensors on gates or lights by tipping the bike is the BEST tip EVAR!
Yeah, I really gotta test that out on some spots that never detect my bike

Love these tips, especially the one to trigger gates.
Great tips. That was an interesting one about tipping up the bike to get through a doorway. I need to practice pushing the bike like you show.
These tips are a blast. More on a regular basis would be invaluable. #5 was the best!
I learnt #2 very early, and it works surprisingly well. Motorbike wave is often done with a foot, btw. Many thanks, though for #5!
Thx for making your videos I have watch most of them in my search for what ebike I need to save up for. Cant wait
Great tip on activating the signal, I've been going to the crosswalk pushing buttons... not anymore.
Three great tips. Never knew the gate trick - that is awesome in the Who Knew category,
I can't wait to try tilting the bike out, You learn something new every day! Thanks!
Kyle, you're awesome...thanks the tips and all your videos!
Nice set of tips. I specially like the one for gates... big pain in the saddle! Keep them coming!
Thanks, will do!

I cannot possibly stress how much the gate opening trick is a game changer.

Thanks for mentioning this. Us bikers have used this trick for years. Just super glue a strong magnet to the lowest point on the bike.
Any special magnet? Size? Source? One from a Hi-fi speaker?
Thanks!
That sensor tip is so cool 😎. I can’t wait to try it 👍🏼

You can't roll any bike up on to its rear wheel if it has mudguards (fenders).
Note: All sensible bikes have mudguards.
Very informative. Thanks
So I did the pre-order for the Bolton blackbird bike. Just wondering if the November delivery is still on schedule?
Please check today's email that went out for updates.
Genius tips. I'm bookmarking this.
Thank you for the awesome tips! Now I won’t have to go thru my pedestrian gate when leaving my gated neighborhood! 😃
Very useful tips. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
Interesting simple tips but good to know
Nice job Kyle. Like the wave thought too!
Glad you enjoyed it! It was pretty fun Gene - just like you. :)

I would like to buy a pair for my mechanical brakes.
Gate/lights tip was awesome
Yes it was!
Interesting. Your last tip will help me get out of our gate without the remote opener. Thanks!
Excellent!

wow, tipping the bike to open the gate blows my mind
Great idea
You shouldn't need to tip your bike to trip a ground loop sensor - instead, ride close to the edge, rather than through the center.
I am going to try that bike tilt trick next time I'm at a stoplight that won't trip. Beats jumping off and hitting the crosswalk button--which I have done, even on a motorcycle. Note to self: don't try tipping the motorcycle...
Thanks for the tips sir....
Nice sentiment, but I think there is too much of a "divide" between bikers and bike riders to expect a motorcycle wave in return. I think even some Harley guys only wave to other Harley guys, haha.
Does that sensor work at drive thrus
Hello Kyle,
I just purchased a folding ebike here. It runs on a bafang motor G 060, 750 watt.
The current battery setup is 48 volt and 14.5 amp hour.
Can the motor safely run on 48 volt 30 amp hour lithium battery?? Any thing needs to be upgraded like the controller etc.
Thanks in advance.
As long as the voltage of your controller and battery match, the amp/hour doesn't matter. You could run a 100 amp/hour battery if you wanted to. On my RadWagon I carry the stock 14 A/h battery as well as a 24 A/h for extra range.
You mention about street riding and waiting at a light. Where do trip the light on the street? In the bike lane, or turn lane?
They make a couple of narrow cuts in the street at the intersection, to bury the sensor wires. You can usually see the lines in the concrete or asphalt where they have filled in those narrow cuts. Now that you know about them you will see them everywhere. www.quora.com/How-do-Traffic-Lights-sensors-work-in-USA

Any tips on getting e bike up a narrow staircase please 🙏
You're amazing! Thank you.
The last tip was interesting
Brilliant!
It blew my mind

Does these tips work on non electronic bike?
Having trouble setting off sensors at the McDonad's Drive Thru with my electric Fat trike, lol.
Haha! Glad you're getting out there and riding!
I love ur videos. So informative. I don't know if you can help. I have a 2018 RipCurrent S. Is their a good set of forks, you'd recommend for my bike?
Great Tips. Thank you. Other then manhandling the bike is there an easier way to get a bike down and up three steps?
Not that I know of

How would you tip your bike over for a traffic signal light?
That's how I get my bike in elevators, during stays.
I've used that tip many times, to get in the side door of my garage, both for my bike as well as my grandson, who always wants me to ride with him when he's over. :)
