He didn't improvise the line itself, but he did make the decision to lean in, with his face in shadow, while saying it (because he felt that kind of betrayal and deconstructing love into chemistry was dark and cold and should be reflected in his body language and cinematography). Real life genius for sure, though :)

Which is why its not all that remarkable that those are real tears, because an actor of this calliber should never rely on tricks and bullshit. Thats what actors do. And no its not easy. It's work night after night. scene after scene. Acting is a job and a very difficult one. Actors that do it with CGI or eyedrops are not real actors and they are not good ones. I think what Benedict meant when he said real tears, were unplanned tears. Which is a thing. And its a fairly special thing. But still part of the work you do to put yourself into those places, which is the job. Moments where you find the unexpected in the middle of something are what he is refering to I beleive.

I don’t think he actually added “because I took your pulse” he simply decided to whisper the line instead, which made it much more intimate. I’m not complaining though, it’s one of the sexiest scenes on television.
Every time I tear my eyes off of the brilliance of Benedict and really focus on Martin, I am irresistibly reminded of the old adage about doing the same moves, but backwards in high heels. Ben is an absolute supernova, but Martin is right there with him, holding his own, in a much less flashy role. (Of course, Benedict himself is always pointing this out, too--he's in awe of the man.)

One show that I truly miss. I hope the writers have time to create another 4 or ( greedily), 6 episodes. The last season was a bit "grand". I like the vibes of SSN 1. More mystery solving contained to one storyline. However, I know I would be grateful for anything. Check out Benedict in "Patrick" Melrose". Also Brilliant.
