    This is not a scientific test, but rather me being curious as to how those two cameras would compare in terms of image when put side by side.
    I decided to of course shoot in RAW for both cameras, in both their respective colour science, as well as Prores since it is the format I prefer to shoot in and the one that I use for most of my content.
    I wanted to grade some of the clips just to see how they would match.
    But then I also decided to convert both raw files to Gen 4 since it is the colour I shoot in and much prefer over the newer Gen 5, and this is when it gets very interesting.
    I made sure to match the colour balance, focal length as best as I could and to use their respective native ISOs.

    Spotting the difference between the two was very straightforward, but lets face it, we shouldn't expect the OG to look like the 6K. Camera sensors have come a long way and they are going to technically improve in terms of gain structure, dynamic range and resolution. Sure, the OG tends to look soft out of the camera, the aliasing in raw is annoying, the menus are an utter pain in the penis, etc etc. But it has a look that creates a more abstract layer to footage away from ultra realism and subconsciously convinces the viewer that it isn't something real and perhaps it's more of a story. A bit like film.
    Now, wouldn't it be something if Blackmagic nodded their heads to the originals gave them a firmware upgrade to make them more usable?

      @haddonhousefilms 2 роки тому +1

      It's the Fairchild sensor on the og. They are dual sensors that capture separately the dark from lights to make color grading much easier. IMO all sensors should be dual sensors. Kind of crazy that they are not.

    They are both great cameras for their price range, but I always had a thing for the original BMPCC: I can't explain technically, but the color science of this camera has something unique and also had a 'filmic' feel that always amazed me, its 16mm sensor has something really fascinating to me. Sometimes I find myself willing to head to eBay to buy an used one, maybe one day I will do

    The final shot with the lake, trees, and leaves impressed me the most. The OG footage had an almost extra-dimensional or celluloid film-like density. The 6K felt flat. And I know it's just a 'kit lens' but I really like the glass in those 14-42mm Lumix lenses. Image subjects separate nicely compared to some of the more popular zoom lenses out there today. Glad you made this video!

    I really enjoy Gen5. I shoot BRAW 100% of the time and easily blend footage from the Ursa Mini Pro G2 and the Pocket 6k Pro. The way Gen5 keeps saturated highlight detail is really great, as I always find Gen4 can't keep the detail in the reds with super saturated lights.

    Very cool comparison! I have to say that I'm very surprise how the original is actually keeping up with the 6K, I would love to see Blackmagic make an actual "pocketable" camera with a size similar to the original, the form factor got some importance when your filming relatives and friends to try capturing "authentic" moments. That's the main reason I'm using my ZV1 or GH5 instead of my BMPCC4K/6K when shooting personal stuff. Anyway, great video, keep them coming!

  • @joshndproductions
    @joshndproductions 2 роки тому

    Fun comparison! It's easy to spot the difference because of the DOF. Smaller sensor on the OG BMPCC = larger DOF / less bokeh. On Super35 sensors I shoot at between F4 and F5.6, and people often tell me that my footage looks very cinematic. Well, watch any film shot before about 2008, and you'll see that the aperture on their lenses are usually between F2.8 and F5.6 for indoor scenes, and between F4 and F11 for outdoor scenes. Focus was a lot deeper in the past, so we associate deep focus with "cinematic" images. If you stop down your lens on the BMPCC 6K to around F4, you could match these two cameras exactly with minimal effort. Shooting in 12 bit RAW on ANY camera gives you more than enough flexibility to match it to any other camera, just because the data density is there. I prefer the OG BMPCC or the BMPCC 4k because it has a very slightly faster sensor readout at 16ms, which is IMO the maximum readout speed for good-looking motion. I personally prefer ARRI or RED, because readout speeds < 10ms tend to look most natural to me.

Some have said the Blackmagic cams produce a slightly more cinematic image, but then others say you can achieve that same Alexa-like feel with C70 in post with grading, emulation etc. What do you think? I’m general I prefer a softer more filmic image closer to film, I’m hoping I can achieve that with the C70 bc I love its practicalities over the BM cams. Thanks!

    Gen5 has the correct gamma that matches the Alexa. You can't get the right highlight retention with gen4, due to its contrasty translation. You simply need to use something like Dehancer to get the most out of Gen5, or luts that were made specifically for it. As for a "controlled environment" with the og BMPCC, watch the movie Cosmos. I think it still plays on Prime.

    • @OfTwoLands

      I agree with you, Dehancer is the best tool I know to make Gen5 look like film (other than paying 8k to a professional colorist). But it's just INSANE how much dynamic range and latitude I get from the 6k Pro when using the wide gamut color space. It blows my mind. I've measure 9 stops above middle gray with wide gamut + highlight recovery

    Try using some gaussian blur and then use sharpen with detail size set to lowest in Resolve.
    Will easily hide the sharpening halos that are coming with BRAW and will also add texture back to the image without showing any sharpening artifacts!
    Also I think it's quite easy to get an even more pleasing look with Gen 5 than with any other BMD gamma curve.
    Gen 5 is the only Cineon like log curve BMD ever made and I'm quite used to it ;)

      Hi, this probably isn't relevant for you anymore, but still:
      The BMPCC OG is an amazing camera, with an incredibly beautiful image, but shooting with it handheld can honestly really be a pain if you dont have reeeally steady hands. In my experience the footage, even from a ronin sc gimbal always has a few microshakes that can sometimes drive me crazy. I mostly shoot it of a tripod now, because when the footage is stable it is honestly amazing and the flexibility that RAW gives you is insane, especially when i compare it to my a lot newer sony a6600. Oh and for gear you need, definitely get an external battery cause the internal one gets eaten up insanely quickly. And if you mini hdmi isnt broken like mine is get an external monitor, cause in direkt sunlight the one on the bmpcc og becomes almost unusable.

    I own but barely used the old pocket. From your comparison, the B camera looks a little odd and flat. Especially in the graded parts - like you have zero saturation in the skin tones. It feels like it's even more flat. But it's ahead in dynamic range for sure.
    Gen1 does look "filmic" but gen4 is more useable. But I feel like sometimes changing back to gen1 gives you great results.

  • @anttiheik
    @anttiheik 2 роки тому +11

    That's a great comparison! To be honest, even in 2021, I'd still rather shoot with the OG pocket than any 8bit Sony or similar. Luckily I happen to have the P6kPro, which I love. The codecs, the color science, the screen and the ND filters make life so much easier than with any other camera at a similar price point.
    I also have to say that I much prefer working with Gen5 color science compared to Gen4, let alone Gen1. It is just so much closer to a standard log image like Arri LogC. I think that your problems with Gen5 stem from Filmconvert not being updated to support Gen5 gamma curve yet. By the way, Gen4 and Gen5 share the exact same gamut, only the gamma curve is different.

    Thank you very much for such an excellent comparison test. bmpcc og is the most amazing camera in terms of value for money, I think it's all because of the sensor, it's made by the same company that makes sensors for Arri Alexa, and although the sensor is small, the resolution is not very high. but the 6.5 micron big pixel adds a cinematic look, I also like to rotate DNG a lot more than Braw

    Arguably the 6k footage can be made to look like the OG, but not the other way around. But it's to be expected, given the age and price difference. I own the OG and I think I'll keep it for my personal stuff, while for work assignments I'll opt for a 4k pocket probably.

    Nice test. Disregarding technical aspects like DR etc - I subjectively prefer the image of the OG in pretty much every shot here. It has more depth and richness and that '3D pop' whereas the 6K PRO looks clean but feels very flat in comparison. I recently found some old clips of my kids when they were babies that I shot on the OG in pro res and i graded them in resolve using the arri colour space transform and I was blown away by how good they look on my 5k retina screen! I'm trying to resist picking up an OG pocket again and this video is not helping! 😅 Great work as always!

    Salut Florent,
    I see that you are in the French alps, I'm going from Belgium to Grasse in a few days visiting my family. I'm originally from there. Anyway, I will subscribe to your channel :)
    Thank you for this content ... I actually own a BMMCC but was hoping to get a pocket 4K for convenience of use and to get 4K. I was lurking some sub 700€ deals on the leboncoin but I'm very much hesitating now... I don't know actually if it is a good decision as I deeply charmed by the sensor of the BMMCC and 4K upscaling is quite good on Resolve Studio. Also, I like using an external monitor to be able to use the camera in other positions that "photograph" style... yet sometimes It would be good to have a smaller setup. I'm using it in the framework of family and small non-lucrative work.
    I use it exclusively with a 0.58x Nikon Speedbooster with Nikon Glasses.
    Any advices ? :)

      Thanks for the support :)
      I would recommend the 4K 100%, the bmpcc4k might be my favourite camera. Amazing value!
      I actually didn't use a monitor with the 4K but if you need one there are some small and lightweight options with 5inch ones so the setup isn't too bulky.
      Have a fun trip :)

Both cameras have 13 stops of range in raw so avoiding that overblown bits is really doable for both cameras. thats why we also shoot in log, to also correct for that in post. If people spent as much time on constructing image pipelines as they do on identifying them, then the cameras wouldn't matter for the look. For some reason people want them to, even though thats worse for you.
