I’ve watched “Auntie Mame” many times, and I couldn’t agree more that Rosalind Russell deserved an Oscar. She was a wonderful actress and a wonderful woman.
Auntie Mame deserved All 6 Oscars it was nominated for. If ever a movie was robbed on awards night it is Auntie Mame. And Angela Lansbury was robbed of the film role in Mame. (Lucille Ball, as wonderful and pioneering as she was, should have never accepted the part.)
Good lord, these women of the Golden Age of Hollywood were truly "something else." It will never be this good again. They are a generation of people that have Gone With the Wind.

Rosalind Russell Brisson was the epitome of dignity, selfless generosity, kindness, and compassionate love. I do not believe this great lady ever thought of herself first. Her simple speed at the Academy Awards brings me to tears every time I view it; I sorely miss her still today. Roz left this world a much better place.
She was so good in so many things. So loved by so many to whom she meant so much. An actress who never got the acclaim of her peers that she deserved, but who never failed to congratulate them on the acclaim they achieved. Class and grace. Elegance and fortitude. Once in a while someone from the Hollywood community dispels the prevalent impression that actors are just self-absorbed egos. Rosalind Russell stands out as that exception -- a class act with a heart that embraced the humanity around her. She was an amazing and inspiring person. In her acceptance speech she said "The people of this nation have a golden tradition of taking care of each other." Alas, if only that were true today.
When I said Russell was a national treasure i meant it! She may not have gotten the headlines like Crawford and turner did but she helped in her own little way. Cary grant said there will never be another like her and he was right Everything is coming up roses and lollipops for Rosalind. Everything!

the most profoundly brilliant comic actress of her generation (1930's and 1940's especially) before lucy. pure class and grace. her performance in "the women" is just about the best comic acting ever seen on screen at that time.
Ball always credited the great Carole Lombard and the brilliant Buster Keaton for her inspiration with comedy, but I suspect, too, that Russell was an influence. In any case, Russell was a class act and a super special actress. Grace and talent so sorely - and sadly - missing in today's world of "entertainment."
Steven Karash: She was indeed. I've watched 'The Women' many times and never tire of hearing her machine-gun delivery, where you can hear every word. How she does that I don't know. She is a marvel.

She was beautiful through and through, and her class and elegance made her even more beautiful than most of her time. I loved all her movies, but especially Auntie Mame, and no one could have done it like her.
95KIPPIE No one could have done Auntie Mame like her. The version done in 74' with Lucille Ball and Beatrice Arthur was really bad. They should have left it alone, because I felt they failed miserably at it.

She was so gracious. Such a dear, dear woman. She would die from breast cancer (I had previously, mistakenly said it was lung cancer) just a few short years after accepting the award. May she be remembered and loved always.
She got cancer and had the first mastectomy in 1960 and the second in 1964. She also had a hip replacement in 1976 and died later that year. She was a trouper and such an incredibly generous lady!
Dear Rosalind Russell....my parents took me to see Auntie Mame when I was 12 and I have been in love with her ever since. My Dad got me a copy of the play and I read it over and over again, imagining Roz in every scene. She was a perfect actress and a fabulous lady with amazing class and grace. I still love her with all my heart!

ROZ RUSSELL is my favorite actress from the 1930s & 1940s. My Mom introduced me to all her early films especially ,"The Women." In later years it was "Auntie Mame." She was so marvelous in all her films . Check out a little known gem of a role in ,"Oh Dad, Poor Dad ..." (1967). Also ,her appearance on "What's My Line,""fr.Jan.1953 is one of the most hilarious I've ever seen. U can find it on Utube. She was so deserving of an Oscar, especially for "Auntie Mame.."thank God the academy recognized her B4 it was too late,since she died in 1976.

Should have won one for Best Actress, but competition back in the day was much tougher, than today's standards. Body of work is great, enjoyed all of her comedy & drama movies. Yes, One of the Greats.
Two great talents, each in their own right. Sinatra brought a great humility to his introduction as did she in her acceptance speech. While Sinatra may not have led a perfect life he knew class and grace and goodness and when to applaud it. Ms. Russell was well loved and admired by her peers and much of her generosity was not made known until her passing. Sinatra was also very generous with not only his wealth but his time, largely unknown as well. May they both know heaven in all it’s glory. Their like will not be seen again, sadly.

I will never forget Rosalind Russell's performance in Picnic!!! That film was so great in telling a story and my all time favorite Rosalind Russell Performance. I also liked her role in A Woman of Distinction with Ray Milland. The Trouble with Angels and her Great Role in Auntie Mame. His Girl Friday and all of the Wonderful Performances that I totally enjoyed. A real Classic Lady.
Her performance in Picnic was absolutely brilliant. Her heart wrenching scene with Arthur O'Connell begging him to marry her shows some of the best of the art of acting. Today? No way. The prior year she received a nomination for her role as Sister Kenny in the self titled film. Mourning Becomes Electra is not to be missed.
That was great. She does have a wonderful speaking voice. And since she was a Catholic and went to Catholic schools, I think that helped her be totally believable as Reverend Mother.
Sad to see how arthritis had ravaged her and the effects of cortisone. She was a champ and a first class lady. Makes me incredibly sad knowing each year we slip farther and farther away from people of her character and courage.

Yes, cortisone has bad side effects, i was on it for a while, my doctor did not want to renew the prescription, cause it also brittle the bones. Rosalind Russell was just amazing. She had so many one line jokes in "His Girl Friday", and it's hysterical. She was terrific in "Rosie" and in "Auntie Mame". I always think of her when I think of "Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows" and "The Trouble with Angels". If you haven't seen any of the movies I mentioned, you're in for a treat once you do.

In those days, children were put into braces and left with weak limbs for the rest of their lives. Sister Kenny proved that a regimen of Physical Therapy would (and did) help countless children recover to live active, normal lives. "Physical Therapy" was an unknown concept then. Now it is part of millions of care plans for countless patients recovering from surgery, stroke, illness, and the effects of aging. It all started with Sister Kenny. If you haven't seen that movie, a true story, I highly recommend it. Sister Kenny's text on the principles of PT is still in print. Rosalind Russell portrays Sister Kenny's story. It's a triumph proving one person can make a difference.

Ms. Russell was well loved and admired by her peers and much of her generosity was not made known until her passing. Sinatra was also very generous with not only his wealth but his time, largely unknown as well. May they both know heaven in all it’s glory. Their like will not be seen again, sadly.

I will never forget Rosalind Russell's performance in Picnic!!! That film was so great in telling a story and my all time favorite Rosalind Russell Performance. I also liked her role in A Woman of Distinction with Ray Milland. The Trouble with Angels and her Great Role in Auntie Mame. His Girl Friday and all of the Wonderful Performances that I totally enjoyed. A real Classic Lady.
Her performance in Picnic was absolutely brilliant. Her heart wrenching scene with Arthur O'Connell begging him to marry her shows some of the best of the art of acting. Today? No way. They don't have the understanding and particularly the sensitivity. No way. Of course, Auntie Mame goes without saying. She was a great!!!

The prior year she received a nomination for her role as Sister Kenny in the self titled film. Mourning Becomes Electra is not to be missed.

That was great. She does have a wonderful speaking voice. And since she was a Catholic and went to Catholic schools, I think that helped her be totally believable as Reverend Mother.
Sad to see how arthritis had ravaged her and the effects of cortisone. She was a champ and a first class lady. Makes me incredibly sad knowing each year we slip farther and farther away from people of her character and courage.

THANKS, I was wondering what illness she mentioned. Was it Rhumatoid Arthritis she had? Yes, cortisone has bad side effects, i was on it for a while, my doctor did not want to renew the prescription, cause it also brittle the bones. Please, i would greatly appreciate it if you have more information on her.. Thanks. My all time favorite of hers was, AUNTIE MAME, how i love her acting,. THIS movie is the greatest stress reliever. She was an amazing actress....in both comedy and drama she was flawless. For all the charity work she did that audience couldn't bother to give her a standing ovation. Both gave great speeches.

Rosalind Russell was just amazing. She had so many one line jokes in "His Girl Friday", and it's hysterical. She was terrific in "Rosie" and in "Auntie Mame". I always think of her when I think of "Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows" and "The Trouble with Angels". If you haven't seen any of the movies I mentioned, you're in for a treat once you do.
My gosh the woman actually wrote the damn play and gave the credit to others! She was a very gracious giving generous woman. She absolutely was auntie mame!!!

I've always really liked you in your films and hearing what Frank Sinatra said about you and seeing you speak makes me realize just how great and humbled a person you were. Rosalind Russell was a terrific lady. Rent "Gypsy" with Natalie Wood, or "My Gal Friday" with Cary Grant, or "The Trouble with Angels" and see what true talent is -- in an expression, an eye brow lift, a look. She was the real deal. On and off camera it seems.

ONE of her many great roles I have always loved was Trouble With Angels!!!!!
Her best role was that of the Mother Superior in The Trouble With Angels and Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows. They were both very good movies.
They could not have picked a better person to play the role of Mother Superior in those movies. Her being a devout Catholic made it all the more fitting. :-)

In those days, children were put into braces and left with weak limbs for the rest of their lives.
Sister Kenny proved that a regimen of Physical Therapy would (and did) help countless children recover to live active, normal lives.
"Physical Therapy" was an unknown concept then. Now it is part of millions of care plans for countless patients recovering from surgery, stroke, illness, and the effects of aging.
It all started with Sister Kenny.
If you haven't seen that movie, a true story, I highly recommend it. Sister Kenny's text on the principles of PT is still in print.
