- The description offered via IMDB is a two-sentence collapse of the story: "An orphan goes to live with his free-spirited aunt. Conflict ensues when the executor of [the orphan's] father's estate objects to the aunt's lifestyle."
In these two scenes, excerpted from the end of the movie, the orphan, Patrick Dennis, has grown up and has chosen his fiance from one of the executor, a conservative banker from the Knickerbocker Bank ("So conservative, they don't even pay interest!") wealthy clients' family. In the first scene, Patrick's free-spirited Auntie Mame is meeting her prospective in-laws for the first time, driving up in her Dusenberg from her Manhattan Beekman Place apartment, to the Upsums 1950s suburban home in an exclusive Connecticut community.
In the second scene, Mame returns the Upsums hospitality with "an intimate family dinner," at her Beekman Place pad that pulls out all the stops for tips & techniques on how to run-off potentially aggravating in-laws, before the marriage. It is also a great scene because Mame torches the bigotry of the Upsums and "conservatives," exposing them for the "shallow, vain, addlepated bigots" that they are.
When Mame shouts "Jackpot!" towards the closing, it's evident that she's gotten exactly what she was after all along. But, as women have had to do for eons, Mame's path to victory is not direct or obvious, but instead utilizes all feminine means of persuasion, of the very type that has confounded men, especially conservative men, for just as long. - Розваги
With all due respect to the musical version, THIS IS Auntie Mame !! There will never be another who can do the story justice like Rosalind Russell.

Yes..😁 When I was young girl (long ago) I went to a dinner party where I was told Auntie Mame had also been invited. I expected a tall, statuesque Rosalind Russell..😂 But the real Auntie Mame (Marian Tanner) turned out to be a tiny little old lady! 😁
The musical should not have been made into a movie. Not all Broadway musicals are meant for the big screen. Cats is a good example of this.
Lying in bed watching this fabulous play thinking how wonderful it is to still be alive at 67 and a cancer survivor and enjoying the sensational and irresistible Rosalind Russell !

I'm so glad you're not just surviving but thriving 😊 I'm 70 and a cancer survivor too. This movie is one of my most favorite movies. My mom and I would stop whatever we were doing whenever this came on. It's so wonderful and funny. Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death ❤💙💙❤️🌛💝 I always feel like Mom's with me and brings only good memories. Hope you're health is good and stays that way. 🙏🙏🙏😊❤❤💙💙💙
Rosalind Russell is a force of nature in this film, a performance that will never be forgotten. The dinner party scene says everything about this film is about. BRAVISSIMO!

When I was a kid, my mom literally made me sit down and watch this movie. I've loved it for the last 56 years!

I'm almost 80 years old, and Auntie Mame is still one of favorite movies as well as my daughter who is 58. Rosalind was a brilliant actress.
I’m 43 and it’s been an absolute favorite of mine since I first saw it when I was 8. We watch it every year while decorating the Christmas tree, at minimum.
This scene gets me every time. The moment Patrick realizes what Auntie Mame has done for him; he understands; he forgives. It brings a tear to my eye every time.

Me too! If I feel a bit low, this always is the best medicine. Even just watching the decor and costumes is enchanting. The Comden/Greene script must be one of the more witty, sophisticated, charming yet subtly revolutionary scripts done. Reminds me of Lubitsch, Coward and Wilder.

Rosalind Russell had such charisma and presence - she steals every scene. This movie was the perfect vehicle for her. Great story and brilliant dialogue. Her wardrobe, accessories and the sets were fabulous. I’ve seen this more times than I can count and it always makes me happy.
The sets! Auntie Mame's apartment changes with her wardrobe. The 'house lights' dimming with change of scene. The translation from theatre yo film is glorious.
She played Auntie Mame on Broadway and received a Tony nomination.
It’s funny, but I still expect the songs, even though I know this is a drama and not a musical.

Never understood why she didn’t play her in the musical version. She could sing circles around Lucille Ball. Unless of course her voice was dubbed for Gypsy…possibility.

The heart of this film, and why I’ve loved it since I first saw it, is the way Mame looks at Patrick when he falls asleep on his first night with her. She’s so unsure and nervous about how to care for him, but that look on her face says it all. She fell for him hook, line, and sinker right there. It’s also when I fell for HER. How can you not fall in love with Mame, and RR’s fabulous performance??
Part of the character of Auntie Mame's enduring appeal has to be her utter, complete authenticity, including being vulnerable. In moments such as you describe, Rosalind Russel brought the role of Auntie Mame to vivid life, earning rave reviews, past & present, because Russell so embodied that authentic spirit of "live, *live*, LIVE!"

Exactly! That scene is so special and realistic showing us how wonderful Mame truly is.
One of my favorite scenes. She was insulted and kind at the same time. Also she saw who they really were and immediately didn’t like them. They were racist. No Jews in their neighborhood. The dinner is everything. Patrick gets to see who he is marrying. Agnes acting like she doesn’t know she’s pregnant. The clothes, the design of the sets. Everything about this movie is magical. You can laugh and cry and the best part you can watch it with the family. I’ve watched it so many times and see something different each time.
Yes, Mame had class and was not deterred by bigotry or rudeness. She was always kind. Even to Mr Babcock of the Knickerbocker Bank.

I hate saying this, I'm not one to dwell on eras gone by, but this grand film of yesterday has me thinking decades back when things seemed to be better. Auntie Mame is needed now, indeed.
I'm a movie fiend - love them all. I can say without a doubt, however, that "Auntie Mame" is my favorite movie of all time. I have literally watched it hundreds of times. And, yes, I agree that Rosalind Russell should have received an Oscar for this role.

This movie is a sheer joy from beginning to end. The social commentaries this movie makes are remarkable given the time it was made.
The social commentary *is* the heart of the plot. Beautifully drawn portrait of the inherent tensions in American society.
I am fortunate to have known Rosalind Russell’s son Lance Brisson. He was most proud of the roles his mother chose to play. She selected parts that emphasized strong independent women, women who were advanced in their thinking, women who were not dependent upon a man which was the norm in those days. Just think about her folio of performances- not a simpering fool in the lot!
Rosalind Russell must have known how important it was for women to be independent and have the ability to make their own decisions, which is the appeal of AUNTIE MAME: a timeless portrayal of a woman who knows what she wants and enjoys life with gusto and verve, making her own decisions about how she will live, damn the Knickerbocker Bank! ;-)
I loved her but she did play a simpering woman in the movie The Women. She was fantastic and so was Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford.
@@midgemooney6908 - Her character in The Women was not a strong person -- she was the stereotypical upper middle-class gossip and busibody -- but the movie itself was groundbreaking in a lot of ways, and I suspect she had no regrets whatsoever in that role.

This movie is delightfully funny. I still laugh at its cleverness decades later. And I’ve never seen a movie with such beautiful gowns and RR wears them with such grace.

Best. Movie. Ever. My sister and I can pretty much quote the whole thing at each other. I love the oh-so-casual disposal of both hors d'oeuvre and drink.
It's no "The Ghost & Mr Chicken" but "Auntie Mame" is indeed one fine film !!
This is my go-to movie when I'm discouraged or feel depression creeping about. It is so witty, laugh out loud funny, poignant and uplifting. It was this that lead me to learn more about Rosalind Russell. What I discovered again and again is how beautiful she truly was both inside and out. Even as she knew she was dying, she was not afraid or wallowing in self pity.
Her friendship with Frank Sinatra was not what people expected due to their different personas. It was her deep Catholic faith that bonded them. He so admired her for it and for her grace that he said she was the woman all women should aspire to become. They were incredibly close until she passed. There is a poem attributed to her called 'Trust Him'. It is about her faith and trusting God. Her husband stated after her death:
//During the 16 years of secret anguish and pain, which began in 1959 and included two mastectomies that were never made public and the terrible onslaught of the worst kind of rheumatoid arthritis in 1969 that culminated in her last two years of total, private agony, she lived by this poem-prayer that she wrote: Trust Him, when darkest thoughts assail thee, Trust Him when thy faith is small. Trust Him, when to simply trust Him is the hardest thing of all.//
That's part of why I love Auntie Mame. I see her and Rosalind as such strong and caring people who had great faith even in the darkest of times.
Sometimes I wish I'd been born in the era of Rosalind Russell but then I think 'It's a blessing I wasn't. I'm able to watch all her performances from The Women, His Girl Friday and the rest plus look to her life well lived as inspiration to keep going when it seems quitting would be easier.
Thanks for posting this segment of the movie. It is so funny and touching. It makes me incredibly happy regardless of how many times I watch it.

So many memorable scenes and led by the incomparable Ms. Russell. I never tire of watching this film. This particular sequence with the Upsons is the film’s pinnacle. But there are so many brilliant scenes, from Patrick’s arrival and Ito’s eyes peering through the door to Midnight Madness then the switchboard operator sequence to the fox hunt. Sheer perfection. Jackpot indeed 😄

"I'm a briiide!" popped into my head during my vows. It was all I could do to hold on til the end.
Agnes' joy in discovering she's married is one of the stellar moments this outstanding ensemble cast provides, in this case Peggy Cass as Agnes.
I discovered Auntie Mame in my early teens. I still find this to be one of the best films ever made. I just love this scene!!!
Rosalind Russell delivers one of the all time great cinematic portrayals. Her talent is on full display as she takes the part she made famous on Broadway and makes it equally famous on screen. Every word, every move, every expression is memorable. This is truly making the character live. This is "becoming" the character. But Rosalind Russell was nothing if she was not also versatile. Look at her performances in "Picnic," "Night Must Fall," and "Craig's Wife." Briliant in every role she ever assayed. She should have won a performance Oscar certainly for "Auntie Mame," but not only was the competition much tougher in days past, but the Academy has rarely afforded top notch comedies the attention and awards they deserve even if they are as brilliantly done as "Auntie Mame".

I was told by my ex partner is anybody I am the reincarnation of Joan but I certainly did not hurt children but everything matching and the house being back correctly clean yes and as most gay people as we know I'm very good at coming out with one-liners saying about Paul O'Grady the faded duchess who is known for drinking large amounts of gin when I was younger now it's a glass of lemonade in a Garibaldi biscuit take care of one another
I first showed this film to my children when they were school age.
Over the years, they view it again & again, they love it.
It's such a great lesson about freedom.
Rosalind Russell is just a rare, equisite treasure to watch in this film. What gifting and talent!!!
Rosalind Russell is fabulous in this part. I think it was ths best performance she gave. Other actresses have tried to do the part but her voice and acting ability gave her the role of a lifetime.
The epiphany of relief Patrick must have felt when he saw the family leave. And then to hear his Auntie Mame stand up to Babcock. It must have felt like a weight off his back that he didn’t have to live up to the expectations that were being forced onto him.
Given the way the movie ends, I think you're right!
Extraordinary film and a brilliant performance by Rosiland Russell...she was robbed of the Best Actress Oscar.

A great film. Ahead of its time. What a sweet relationship of pure love between Mame and Patrick, her little boy. So sweet.
There is nothing purer than maternal love. Patrick was lucky to have an enlightened mother figure in his life who allowed him to grow outside of cages that so many other parents put on their children. Girlfriends, wives, children come and go, but there is only one mother in your life.
A movie I never miss whenever TCM is playing it. Joyful, hilarious, and fun to watch. It never grows old; and this dinner party scene is the best.

One of my favorites. It is a Thanksgiving weekend must see every year.
From the first time I saw it as a teen, I wanted to be Mame. Eclectic, funny, well traveled, bohemian and over the top. My niece tells me I did a good job. We HAVE had some grand adventures over the years.
We watch it together at least once a year. She still writes down words to look up in the notebook I gave her 40 years ago--although her vocabulary is so good now, I have to find one's that stump her! That subscription to word a day is paying off😜

In tackling the notion that a family is whatever one wishes it to be, this movie has a very contemporary feel to it. It's great.
The perfect mixture of hilarity and sentiment. When Patrick and Mame repeated their 'lines' from the play, I lost it. And Lee Patrick and Coral Browne each upping the laugh quotient with every word they say...fabulous!

Hey. I just liked the movie! The political, sexual were accepted as part of a great movie.
Umm, no it wasn’t meant to be a gay staple for anyone who’s a boomer or a gen x-er. Then that would be just a our everyone! Lol 🤦🏻♀️… it’s just a movie, a funny movie. But also, showed how racists the Upsons were, back then the word, racist, wasn’t used. More like prejudiced was used but also they were snobs and Auntie Mame saw right through that and wanted them to be put in their place because their neighbors were different in their eyes, Jewish. They didn’t want Jews living not even a mile near them. That’s what this scene is about. Just because someone is different, it doesn’t always mean they’re gay. A lot of people are different, not always accepted in society and not all are gay. Your comment is pretty much saying, if you’re different then this movie is meant just for gay people, a message for only gay people. Not even. It’s just a movie. 🤦🏻♀️
@@JMarieCAlove I think the comment was more directed at the "campiness" of the movie and Auntie Mame being camp herself and so many gay men being campy. Kind of like "Mommie Dearest" is a favorite of gay men. I don't think the comment was that they like it because of the prejudicial issues.
Incidentally, "racist" and "prejudice" in this context are the exact same thing. The words are synonymous.
You also have to realize the attitude in the era in which the movie takes place. Sadly America did not take kindly towards Jews. It wasn't just because they were different. It was because they weren't Christian when the majority of Americans were, even blacks! All across America many places were "restricted" like hotels, resorts and restaurants. It was commonplace. And not ONLY by the upper class. The middle classes were probably worse in their treatment of Jews. There was an entire parallel society created by Jews. They had their own resorts, country clubs, etc.

Coral Browne should have been nominated for Vera Charles. Coral was class acting ,. The writing is quick and crisp. Comden and Green. They were top of their game, and 'Vera' takes the stage in every shot she's in. Very enjoyable.
Comden and Green had the rock-solid Lawrence and Lee to build on, but their touch is evident in the addition of the switchboard scene ("I'm sorry...there's no such place as San Francisco") and what had to be adjusted to placate Will Hays
("That is a B...the first letter of a 7-letter word that describes your late father")
I wish the whole movie was on here! I love it. My dad always made fun of the “top drawer” phrase and I never understood until I saw this movie. It is truly one of the greats - maybe the best comedy ever made.

I've never forgotten Mame's comment that suburban Gloria "had braces on her brain."
There are so many awesome moments in this clip. My favorites are The look in her eye when she realizes what they mean by "wrong kind," and when she casually says, "they are family, dear." As a kid watching this, it showed me that is possible to have chosen family. And we all need a friend like vera.

One of the best movies ever. Lucille Ball rendition is good too. Being it’s a musical. This one is the blood of my heart! I introduced this movie to my kids. My daughter loves it. I even made a sampler of the movie quote - Life is a Banquet….

I watched this movie with my grandmother. I loved it so much. And here, many years later, this pops up in my feed…just when I needed it.
My favorite author wrote about his mother's road trips across country with her foot glued to the floorboards, and With such a joy of life, She also did much the same in Europe a few years later, with the crowning glory being awarded "Persona Non Grata" from the Russian bureaucracy itself. Due to their poor attitude toward visitors. His real life story reminds me of Rosalind Russell's car-actor of "Auntie Mame". I am sorry none of my relatives have been so free spirited.
