Valentina Cortese said that the praise she received from Ingrid Bergman that night was the best moment of her career - and was subsequently delighted that she did not win !!
I'm sure if she had been in Ingrid's position, she would have said something similar because she knew she didn't need a gold statue and was happy at least to be acknowledged. I'd really like to see her performance as I've only seen Ingrid Bergman, Talia Shire, and Diane Ladd in their roles and Ms. Bergman's praise really sells Valentina Cortese as one of the strong contenders.
@@codyhoskins1319 I’ve seen all five, and while I personally would’ve voted for Madeline Kahn, Valentina Cortese was a very close second, and had she been nominated in 1973 (when Day and Night was actually released), she should have easily won.
@@heywoodjablome7535 Comedy rarely prevails. There seems to be some pervasive impression that it's easier than drama, and therefore, should not ever win over it. Both very wrong and very unfair. Madeline Kahn gave an even stronger Oscar contending semi-comedic performance in "Paper Moon," and lost to ten-year-old, Tatum O'Neal in her first screen performance. That was even worse, as far as I'm concerned, especially since O'Neal should have been in the Best Actress category if at all. At least Kahn lost to Bergman here.
What I can't understand if Day and night came out the year before, why wasn't Ms. Cortez not nominated then? Also maybe Ms. Bergman could have proxied her votes to Ms. Cortez.
@@patbulfin5459, it has to do with Oscar rules which are different now. Foreign language films could be nominated earlier based on their country of origin … I don't fully claim to understand it, but it sort of makes sense.
Today Valentina Cortese passed away. May she rest in peace, our italian pride. R.I.P.
"It's always nice to get an Oscar" Love you so much Ingrid... a legend
This is called elegance and class. Rare qualities nowadays.
Rare qualities any time.
It's 2020. Elegance and class are extinct.
miley cyrus and selena gomez are class
That's not what the other three nominees thought, not a single acknowledge for them
Funny, people said the exact same thing back in 1976. And in 1876, 1526, 26, 2006, and will say the same dumb meathead generality every year in the future.
Spent her entire speech talking about how awesome one of the other performances was.
Nobody else does that.
Lots of other actors have done that. Maybe not the entire speech but it happens. Sandra Bullock did it, Hallle Berry, just off the top of my head.
Some of the other winners will acknowledge the other nominees. Ms. Bergman dedicated her ENTIRE speech to Ms. Cortese.
Actors today could learn a thing or two about claaa
Were you falling off a cliff when you wrote this? I hope you're OK.
It's so beautiful when that happens. Joaquin Phoenix spent his entire BAFTA speech to say how much he admired each and every one of the other nominees. Class, humbleness and love for the art
What a class act. What a speech!
nice accent.
Bergman once again displaying the class she was so well known for. There was never another like her.
there were, but not many.
It wasn't very classy to single out just one of her fellow nominees...how do you think that made Madeleine Kahn, Talia Shire & Diane Ladd feel? A little ungracious, even if unintentional.
being politically correct is so boring and fake. She spoke from her heart. Being politically correct anyone can, speak the truth...so hard... people like you can't handle it.
It was controversial at the time and she spoke out about how she didn't mean to upset the other three, but there was a backlash against this speech.
Which I suppose is to be expected in the circumstances but she did talk about the fact that the film won the previous year and Cortese went begging. Bergman did not understand the timing of it and I still don't.
"Please forgive me, Valentina, I didn't mean to!" LOL aw, she's so cute.
Olivia coleman apologizing to glenn close reminded me of this
Now that is what I call being COOL,she despised in a very elegant and nice way her oscar win and dedicated her entire speech to another actress.
Ingrid was probably thinking, I’ve already won two Oscars before, someone else must be more deserving than me!
@@davy209 I think she meant every word she said. Ingrid wasn't anything if not sincere.
@sigmundgrizli2896 - re: "she despised..." Did you mean "despite?"
Glory is fleeting - class is forever.
"It's always very nice to get an Oscar"... LOOL
She won three!
It ain't funny, is it?
The shade of it all 😂
What a put down! Good old Ingrid! Ever witty! PS. And so fair.
This must have been the most generous Oscar speech I've ever witnessed - to mention and praise another actor so much. And she of course is so beautiful.
What a class act. Ingrid and Valentina Cortese were very dear friends, and it's so lovely to see how Ingrid shares this Oscar victory with her. Now and forever, Ingrid Bergman is the most amazing actress ever to set foot on the silver screen. RIP.
It's always nice to get an Oscar.... Ingrid Bergman was straight up savage with this line, yet pulled it off with such class and grace that no one but she can do!!
Epitome of elegance, beauty and grace, intelligence. That's Miss Ingrid Bergman.
What generosity of spirit! In effect, Ingrid Bergman is saying to Valentina Cortese that this Oscar should be your's not mine. The acknowledgement of love between the two friends is palpable!
I agree w you. And it's Yours. Simple!! 👓🎓🎒
Liz Taylor in her prime is arguably one of the most beautiful women, but Bergman was always beautiful even when she was old.
Koki Ito audrey hepburn too
A lovely point to make.
Its the German blood we are ageless
Ingrid Bergman was 1000 times more beautiful than Elizabeth Taylor
Audrey and Grace were very very beautiful too. Ingrid was Grace's fav actress. Bergman was beautiful and charismatic.
she had a beautifull accent.
Much more than Isabella
Very close to Received Pronunciation for me, perfect English to understand
Yes, she did. Actually everything about Ingrid Bergman was beautiful.
"It's always very nice to get an Oscar" - at the time tying with Kathreen Hepburn for the number of acting Oscars - such a funny, true and classy comment. As a Swede, of course I am very proud. Love her work in the film, however small a part it is. It's wonderful how her character Greta Ohlsson mixes Swedish with poor (?) English when she gets emotional. Sidney Lumet did her scene in one very long take; superb acting.
That comment is not classy...everyone laughed because it's so ridiculous that she's acting like she got a bouquet of flowers when in fact she got her third Oscar while all the other nominees had zero Oscars and everyone dreams of it. That's why they laughed...because for her getting another Oscar was no big deal.
It wa totally right and they didn't laugh AT her. Only in your imagination.
Not a small role at all. She is her character throughout the whole film. Unforgettable performance.
@@dohaperson1 , I don't think so. Observe her while was expecting the name of the winner: she was breathing heavily.
dohaperson1 oh please shut up! she didn’t mean to show off or make a funny comment and it’s not her fault that she’s legendary actress and a superstar with two oscars which made the audience laugh at her comment.
Wow...even with 60 years old,she was the most beautiful woman In cinema history. I love her.
Casablanca my all time favorite film. Gaslight is close. I love Ingrid so much! Whenever one of her films come on I smile the biggest smile! 😍😍
Lol she was never "the most beautiful woman in cinema history". This title belongs to either Grace Kelly or Ava Gardner.
@@danteormenov6705no.. she was..It's all about personal preferences though
@@barbaraeden1877 She had her own beauty, it is not just about the face, it is about posture, aura, smile, voice - charisma. Look at the powerful and confident walk on the stage. Bergman had "it", also others, like Garbo, Dietrich, Leigh; Gardner, Monroe, Bardot etc. Not so much Grace Kelly or Rita Hayworth although they of course was absolutely ravishing.
But of course everything is about personal preference. When Bergman, Garbo (and also the "less pretty" Stanwyck, Crawford, Davis etc) and Leigh was in a scene, all eyes were on them. That is star quality. For example - the Miss Universes and Miss Worlds have mostly failed in all the roles that have been offered to them. Halle Berry came second in Miss USA but became a star, but that is an exception I think.
@@dubbelhenke854 yeah..exactly ❤️
What a gracious winner. She deserved every success she achieved.
So graceful. So elegant and classy. So tall and beautiful. And that accent, wow!!! One of, if not the greatest actress ever. Miss you Miss Bergman.
She's awesome. To think that she won three Oscars, all competitive, over the course of 30 years, both leading and supporting, AND with other nominations to her name...that's legendary. Not to mention the nominations she deserved and didn't get.
She had a very tiny role in Murder on Orient Express but she existed very strong in every scene. maybe not a big drama or comedic acting, but she gave much more than the role required. I understand that award
Oh, she ACTED the whole time, even when she was silent. That's what actors do.
"It's always very nice to get an Oscar." QUEEN
Her praise of Valentina was sincere, and you can see this in her immediate reaction to the announcement-- she was genuinely contemptuous of the Academy voters. A frown and headshake in disgust, followed by an elegant strut to the podium, and finally the classiest speech in Academy history.
Just a queen without peer.
Absolutely. She meant it - you could see when her name was called how surprised and confused she was. She had later said, that she thought that the role was far to small to be worthy of an Oscar.
The crazy thing is that the reason she won an Oscar was just one long continuous scene - her interrogation scene by Poirot, played by Albert Finney. She nailed it and deserved this win.
I just watched a YT clip of an interview she did with Mike Douglas - he asked her if there were any awards which she'd won that she felt she didn't deserve, and she mentioned this one. She said that the only reason she won was because Sidney Lumet kept the camera on her during that whole scene instead of cutting to Albert Finney.
@@rah62 Yeah, I saw that clip. It's how I ended up here.
I love it that Valentina is smiling and laughing while all the other nominees are all stone faced. The Italians are cool bunch.
There will never be another one like Ingrid Bergman! What a classy and talented actress. Her role in Murder on the Orient Express was small but I loved that she won and I actually was able to watch her win a third Oscar. And she was so humble. In an interview after The Oscars, she have credit to director Sidney Lumet for her win because she said he always let his actors have lots of close-ups and that makes a stronger impression. She didn't mention that you also have to be an accomplished actress to make an impression and she did that so many times in her career. Her acceptance speech is one of my favorite memories of all the years I've watched The Academy Awards!
Just when I thought I couldn't love her more
when people speak of class, they should watch this trailer.
she won an oscar, quite an accomplishement, and she dedicated all her speech to another actrees.
Great Great Ingrid!
Well, not that classy, that's not what the other three nominees thought, not a single acknowledge for them
@@jeffreytaddeo6245 and you really gave an example of class, Bong Joon Ho acknowledged all of his brothers nominees in a classy way
@@JKReAl You mean you have to acknowledge every nominee to be a classy person? Wow, that’s really stupid...
@@MrViktorBajen it’s really stupid to acknowledge just one nominee and disregard the rest of them, also is really stupid to think otherwise, like you hahaha
@@JKReAl LOL. So says the stupid like you who doesn't even know the meaning of selfish and spamming the comment section by repeating the same nonsense on every comment, to soothe your bruised ego... Just because she dedicated her ENTIRE speech to just one nominee, does NOT mean that she disregarded/disrespected the other nominees, duh!
what a classy lady! What a beautiful woman both inside and out. I don't know if I've seen another actress who even comes close to radiating the warmth and humility as she does through such a lovely accent.
The way Ingrid Bergman walked was so graceful too.
Powerful and confident.
Fun fact: All the five nominees had the screen time of less than 18 minutes. Ingrid’s role on The Murder on the Orient Express was the longest with 17 minutes and 57 seconds.
"Thank you very much, indeed. It's always very nice to get an Oscar..."
One of the things I admire most about Ingrid Bergman is her wit. It is unforgettable, really!
And her beauty, oh. my. gosh.
She really is one of the best ever. And I love her!
isabella is similarly as witty charming and beautiful as her mother
Her speech is amazing, but I have to say that I love it when she walks off the stage. She knows exactly where to go and the rest of the group just follows her. xD
And like her mother, Isabella is a class act all the way! I don't miss a rossellini film ever! Even death becomes her.
@@jamesmonroe7751 agree 100% Im captivated by both of those amazing classy ladies
It was her third win! She had it downpat
I work in Milan, next to Valentina Cortese's home. She now is 95!
Bergman was one of first tall leading ladies. Bogie had to wear lifts. I can see why.
She almost never wore high heels. In Casablanca, she's regulated to very low-rise shoes, which only schoolmarms wore in those days. Of course, because of her luminescent beauty & those amazing Orry-Kelly suits (every time I watch it, I think, "When she got on that train in Paris, she must have had 20 pieces of luggage!" because she has a different ensemble in every scene).
They just don't make political refugees like they used to.
Kay Francis was probably the very first. She was also 5'9".
@@everythingclassic1705 Kay Francis also had small feet. She would topple over a lot.
She has a smile that could make anyone's day brighter!
CLASS ACT.
That was a very honest and humble acceptance speech.
RIP Ingrid Bergman (August 29, 1915 - August 29, 1982), aged 67
You will always be remembered as a legend.
Such a classy, humble woman! And MAN it's creepy how much Isabella Rosselini looks like her mom!
Only Mum's more beautiful & did so much more on the screen.
mckavitt13 I’d say they’re equally beautiful as they look like twins, but that’s my opinion. Yes, Ingrid’s done more but Isabella is an icon in her own right.
@@SomethingSomethingg True. Not exactly sure why tho'.
@@mckavitt13 Blue Velvet has made her a permanent icon.
@@hcombs0104 Right.
Isabella Rosellini and her mom sound so much alike!!
She was a great actress and a real Lady...so nice that she spent all her speech talkin'about Valentina Cortese's performance...
That was by far the most charming, humble and lovely oscar speach!
She was a classy lady, inside and outside. She knew her role wasn't Oscar worthy and she dedicated the moment to Cortese in a very witty and clever way (you have to see Day and Night). Her dress is incredible, I always go back to it. Simple, quirky, different, very European, vintage (now).
Humble and gracious.........a beautiful act of personhood.....God bless her...
We all know now how great these MOVIE STARS were back then. There is no one today who could hokd a candle to Ingrid Bergman.
Robert Anderson thank god that she stay true to herself. She
no matter what decade is shown, someone comments "stars aren't like that anymore" or "no one is like this anymore". Fact check: there are actors as good and glamorous as this today.
They maybe good and glamorous but they don't have an ounce of the class
So Streep, Blanchett, Amy Adams, Winslet, Emma Thompson, Michelle Williams, Portman, etc. don't have class? Get real....
dohaperson1 well they have.but in today's Hollywood when doing some speech in award show they intend to put somepoltical thingy. Which for me i don't like it .speech about how they don't like their president and so on.
How gorgeous & talented was Ms. Ingrid. There are so few performers who are as talented as they are lovely - Vivien Leigh, young Marlon Brando, James Dean & Leonardo DiCaprio are among the exceptions. Certainly Ms. Bergman was too.
DiCaprio???????? Lol
Her entire speech is basically accepting an award for Valentina Cortese, because she thought she was robbed previously. What a class act!
Miss Bergman is one tall drink of water!
She had Almost One lengthy scene and used it brilliantly to get an oscar ☝️🔥
Amazing generosity towards another artist. That kind of ego-less praise is not always forthcoming from the Hollywood crowd.
that's what I call a classy woman
My god...She was beautiful, awfully talentuous, she had class and she fought all her life to live the way she wanted...I would call her somebody to look up to, but it would an insult, cause a you can always copy a model, but nobody will be, one day, able to copy Ingrid Bergman. A woman in all her glitter. Thank you Ingrid for having gave us so much beauty.
I have never heard a speech like this. Stunning and well delivered.
Just finished watching "Murder on the Orient Express" on TCM and that acceptance speech popped in my head. I watched it live with my family when I was in high school, and it really was amazing, touching, unforgettable to watch. So funny when she said "It's always nice to win an Oscar", so warm and real when she talks about Valentina Cortese. First time I've watched it since then, and she's exactly as I remember.
Ingrid is still HOT at that age.
You're absolutely right!
Yes !!
Ingrid Bergman born in 1915
i love the fact that she expressed so well how she felt and stayed in the moment instead of thanking ever who she had ever met. bravo!
What a time in history. When the Oscars weren’t so flashy. When the likes of Katherine Ross and Peter Falk are honoring Ingrid Bergman. The simplicity and authenticity of the stage and the dresses and the moment. And of course the lineup of best supporting actresses. And then to top it all of the absolute grace and strength and humility of Ingrid. I cry watching this. How gracious and kind.
The world used to be a better place with better humans. PERIOD.
Hi
She is just the best model ever. Her speech is basically dedicated to Velatina. Not even her own. Legend!
What a gracious and unselfish acceptance! This kind of class and style is sadly gone.
Beautiful she was
Ingrid Bergman was such a beautiful and classic actress. These kinds of actors just don't exist anymore ):
Ingrid Bergman's performances are a treasure!!! She was a beautiful lady who aged so gracefully; like a fine wine. Watch her great performance in Autumn Sonata.
Actually Ingrid Bergman died young really. She passed away on her 67th birthday in 1982. If alive today she would be 107 years old. Ingrid Bergman's three daughters are still living today. Her first born was former TV personality and actress Pia Lindstrom who is now in her 80's. Ingrid Bergman also had twin daughters including actress Isabella Rossellini who are now over 70. Ingrid also had one son but you never see or hear about him. I don't know if he is still living or not.
@@michaelverbakel7632 Isabella has a twin sister?? I didn't know! I can't google it as I've been googling and YT-ing WAY too much. But I wonder if they're identical? Probably fraternal? If ever I have the time for such frivolous research, I'll check..
@@michaelverbakel7632 Very informative comment 🙂.
@@cockeyedoptimista Isabella Rossellini's twin sister is named Ingrid Rossellini, I don't know her married name. I've seen a few pictures of her and she really doesn't look much like her twin sister at all. I know twins do not have to look like each other. I'm probably wrong but I think that Ingrid Rossellini is some kind of either author, writer or publisher mostly for medical or scientific books, magazines or articles. I remember seeing a book at a library once with Ingrid Rossellini's name on it. The author's bio listed Ingrid Bergman as her mother. This Ingrid has nothing to do with showbiz. This Ingrid was a very well educated woman. She is or was married and had kids.
@@michaelverbakel7632 Thank you for responding to my question with such interesting information! Seems like Ingrid senior did a good job on raising her children. It's great to hear that this other twin took such good advantage of her opportunities and followed a different muse. I see they are fraternal, not identical, twins.
Valentina was SUPERB in "Day For Night"...And I feel that, receiving a tribute by Ingrid Bergman on stage is even better that actually winning the oscar!ingrid was a very classy lady
I can see why she got this award, she was great in the orient express
Thank you! Wish she was still here though... :'(
Ingrid is the personification of class and elegance.
Such class.
Ingrid Bergman was very beautiful and talented and Valentina Cortese was the most gorgeous and spetacular italian brunette goddess and bombshell of the 70s. Rest in peace, Miss Bergman. Amen.
@DannaRoseAguilar
I always loved her accent. That makes me think of that scene in "Notorious", when Cary Grant finds Bergman in bed near the end of the film. She says, almost with resignation, "they're poisoning me". That moment showed me how much, with that lovely accent, she was able to render a character or convey emotion or thought so completely.
Beautiful speech...for Valentina Cortese it was like an Oscar
Best Actress - Gaslight 1944
Best Actress - Anastasia 1956
Best Supporting Actress - Murder in the Orient Express 1974
Ingrid Bergman has great acting in Murder on the Orient Express.
jwelch5742 yup her great5 minutes of scene
@@vadjulawakaru Nope. Throughout the entire film. Couldn't take my eyes off her. Acting isn't only talking.
Oh my god, her accent!! How beautiful!
I greatly admire the screen performances of Ingrid Bergman and I can understand the iconic actress receiving Oscars for Gaslight, Anastasia, Joan Of Arc, Casablanca, Autumn Sonata, and a variety of other films, I don't believe that her work in "Orient Express" rose to the level of an Oscar worthy performance.
Totally agree she barley spoke in The Orient Express
Came here to say just that. I understand why Finny was nominated, but how did Bergman stand out out of the entire ensemble I do not comprehend. And not only did she get nominated for an entirely forgettable performance and one of the weaker ones in the cast, she WON! I sense there was some bribery or some corruption afoot, or either pity was the culprit.
She did her scene is a single take, was totally entertaining and hit many emotions in one scene. It was a great performance...was it the best performance that year or of her career? Probably not, but it was a great performance.
I just watched the movie and she was great. My eyes were fixed at her even if the other actors are on the scene. Short but surely memorable performance. Can't imagine her playing the princess part.
She herself thought it was too short and hadn't expected to win either. But she is marvellous and so exactly right. Peter Griffin, you said it: "My eyes were fixed at her even if the other actors are on the scene." That is star quality. Garbo had it, Ingrid, Gary Cooper, Marilyn, Brigitte, Fred Astaire and many others. You cannot buy it.

Wow! What a gracious, gracious acceptance speech! Such a classy woman! Class, graciousness and talent--you can't do better than that!
And no one has... since.
You have to appreciate the unusual in an Oscar winner spending the whole speech praising another actress' performance the year before...
My favorite Oscar speeches of all times: INGRID BERGMAN, RUTH GORDON and SHIRLEY MACLAINE.
she's so graceful!
ingrid was always the epitome of elegance and in this speech she shows clearly how gracious she could be as well.
I like how she made her speech all about Valentina
Without a doubt the greatest actress that came from Europe of all time. End of story.

Loved her, loved her films, and loved this speech. She remains great and never needed an Oscar to prove it. We miss you Ingrid!
Class Act! Actually spent her time acknowledging one of her fellow actresses nominated in the same category ,instead of thanking everyone on the planet.

Ingrid Bergman was a class act, through and through! She was a good ambassador for my country, Sweden, just like Greta Garbo. They are both missed!
Happy B'day Ingrid!!!
¡Muchas gracias!
Meryl Streep también ha ganado tres Oscar
Why did you say she's the only actress to win 3 Oscars to date while you also said Katherine Hepburn surpassed her with 4 Oscars? K. Hepburn not only won 4 Oscars but she won all the four (4) Oscars for Best Actress category, which is such an amazing feat and accomplishment, which may not be surpassed for a long time, perhaps may not be surpassed at all by any actor, male or female. I think some actors have won three (3) Oscars such as Meryl Streep ( 2 best actress & 1 supporting), Daniel Day-Lewis ( all 3 for Best Actor) & of course, Ingrid Bergman
@@ramdingaliana9711 Winning an Oscar and being great actors might not go hand in hand. Katharine Hepburn still holds the record of statuettes and yet she is far from being the greatest of them all, while numberless great performances (as well as some performers) have shamefully be disregarded by the coveted prize. The Oscar is an award and like all awards it must obey to rules which more often than not have little to do with art.
Valentina Cortese pass away today😢
a portrait of grace and assurance. she does not need an oscar to validate her talent. beyond talent is a lady defined. kudos to both Ingrid and Valentina.
