If any body is in Orange County or San Diego, I need a PA on 03/09/23. Not sure on rate yet still researching industry standard but feel free to reach out!
That would be dope if this actually helps you find someone!
@@davidmorefield Dude i hope it does :) I need the help, after seeing how a PA helped you, it makes the jobs so much easier.
@@areeltrip hey man! I’m in San Diego. Would love to know more and maybe we can work together.
Wish I had seen this last year when you needed someone haha. If you ever want to talk jobs in the future let me know. Hope it all worked out for you!
great video ! keep it up David! love to see it. " THE WHOLE TEAM EATS " is a motto my boss says, and i love that you have the mindset of everyone gets better together.
It really helps to have that mindset even though we are all separate entities.
Love the end of this vlog. And the whole rest of it! The fact that this is becoming a real tight knit community where people are able to build a network by being mutual friends/viewers of yours is amazing.
Way more than I expected
Glad to see the tribe keeps growing, and thanks for supporting others within the community. Keep up the great work, some of us always learn new things from you! Even when we’re afar 😉
Glad to hear it man. We can always learn from each other.
Great vlog David. Added value once again. Keep growing the community and keep blazing.
Yezzirrrrrr. Thanks for watching!!
A lot of great information in this video, definitely learned something. Thanks for putting this together!
Thanks for watching brother. I always try to add the random things going on in my head. Sometimes those are the most valuable haha
@@davidmorefield Keep it coming man! Any thing is valuable to an amatuer like myself!
I've been loving watching these vlogs the past few days, first thing in the morning, sitting at my desk at the office while sipping coffee. The start of the year has been quite slow, with only a trickle of jobs, although I had a nice 3-day offsite shoot at a race car track at the foot of Mt. Fuji last week. Backing up footage at the end of a shoot -- yes, solid advice. I am not able to sleep after a shoot unless I've copied all data from the cards and onto my laptop AND and external hard disk as a safety backup. You've definitely made the right choice to sell the C70 and get an FX3. Having matching colors and codecs makes editing so much easier, and having lenses you can share across cameras is another bonus. I often shoot with 4 cameras -- an FX6, a7sIII and two a7IVs -- and the images pretty much all match.
Yeah and it’s not even necessarily that I prefer Sony over canon. Canon does a lot of things better.
But I get more requests for Sony and therefore I need a matching b camera.
Love to watch your videos man. Such a value. I wish I can have this community in Amsterdam.
You can creat it brother! Just post about your work, set up a coffee date, start a vlog. People will notice!
I use a Skilz workout strap wrapped around the Tilta ring. It's stretchy but firm. Takes all the weight off your arms but still serves the purpose. Push away from your body for high shots and relax your arms for long shots.
I’ll look into it!
I love your clips. We're doing similar in San Francisco (On a smaller scale) but it's always amazing seeing how others work. We have fellow DPs here and we always enjoying talking gear and technique.
I’m as nerdy as they get. Happy to share!
Watching from Nairobi,Kenya..your Vlog stories are very inspiring.I love that they include lots of field production and busines side of videography.
Wow that’s so cool! 🌍 Yeah man, thanks. Those are what I like to learn about.
Appreciate you sharing the experiences! I understand it would take extra effort but it would be nice to see some footage from the productions in these vlogs. Keep it up! 💪💪
I second that! We understand it depends on the production
Yeah most of the time I never see my work. I’m not involved in post production or the distribution. Randomly I will scroll on Instagram and see my work. 🤣
@@davidmorefield i feel ya, that's my ideal job haha just shoot and then done for the day don't have the patience for editing unless it pays
@@stuartswindellcampoy8483 I hate editing haha
Kudos to you David for not giving up your autonomy and freedom!
It’s too valuable, man.
You are doing an amazing work
Thanks for the kind words man
stay killing it my man!
Thanks brotha
I see you’re very busy keep it up you’re doing awesome. What did you think about the R5C image quality and to be used doing interviews and live streaming?
Had the same functionality and image quality of any mirrorless cam. It worked great for the project.
I've been a silent watcher for a bit now, I'm originally a graphic designer and photographer in France but I feel really inspired to start videography now thanks to your content and vlog. For that thanks a lot.
Also, about the freelancing, I think you're 100% right. I took a contract job for 3 years more than a year ago, putting to sleep my freelance activity for this period of time and my personnal feedback is not good : I feel not motivated and trapped. Sure it's more stable and you do not have to worry about getting more jobs to pay your bills but I think if you're on a position to sustain your freelance activity and feel the growth potential, you should never give up that freedom. It gave me so much happiness back then, I didn't even realize it before it was gone.
Cheers and thanks for sharing your journey with us all !
Thanks for joining on the journey.
Yeah a lot of people will always refer to having a steady job provides a consistent paycheck. But that also means you are capped at the paycheck.
If I get a new client or gig, I could make way more than a salaried position. It’s all about getting out what you put in, when you’re a freelancer. And I prefer that ‘effort to payoff’ type of relationship.
@@davidmorefield That is very true. I'm starting to experience that cap. I never thought of it before but now that my second kid is here and I want more income, I can't. Or I could take side gigs and do it on week-ends or nights which is not very convenient. Cheers
@@Aphex083 if I was in your situation. I would use your weekends to establish retainer clients. That way, when you quit, you already have a few contracts bringing in money. And then use the rest of the time to really make it happen. But don’t do it alone. Make as many connections as possible with local crew members. DO NOT ask them for coffee and to pick their brain. I used to do that and now that I have so many people doing that to me I realize how one sided it is. Make it worth it for the other person. Say dinner is on you and it shows their time is really valuable. Id love to hear an update in a few months!!
Awesome episode dude
Thanks Matt. It was a really fun gig.
Dope vlog!
You mentioned that the gimbal was powering the R5c, is it USB-C PD ?
No actually dummy battery
Great vid, am thinking of investing into the Sony ecosystem but I have a few question. Am researching and hearing about the Sony codecs and how computer struggle to edit and playback footage… what have your experienced?
It depends what codec you shoot in. A more compressed codec takes up less data but is harder to edit and vice versa.
I recently shot 4k60 in the All-Intra codec and I am cutting it up no problem on my 2015 Max Book Pro in Final Cut. But it eats memory. A 128gb card is 27 minutes of footage.
nice work brother
Thanks dooood
You dropped a ton of gems in this video! If I'm ever in Orlando - I'd like to join you all for breakfast. I'm in ATL btw.
Glad you got some value out of it. And yeah lmk, maybe we’ll have a meetup then.
Nice vlog! Excited for your conversion into the dark side, aka Sony 😄 in all seriousness, have you noticed a difference in dynamic range between the C70 and FX6/FX3?
Haven’t used it enough to really compare. But so far it seems close.
And now I’m actually considering the fx30 bc of its insanely low price. I would mostly use it for 4k24 a a b cam in interviews or 4k60 on gimbal for broll
@@davidmorefield Fair enough! Ya the FX30 is a really good value camera.
Wow! You had your own AC!
Always a pleasure when I do.
David, What do you think of the R5C considering it's lower price for a variety of jobs as compared to the c70, fx6 etc. (Corporate, Vlogs, Cinematic shoots, etc.) ? Thank you!
If you are video focused then the c70 is the most appropriate choice. The battery limitation alone is enough to not use it as a workhouse. Then if you add a vmount, you might as well have a c70 in which you’ll also receive ND and xlr. It’s dedicated video features are what make it a better video camera. Simple as that. If you have money to switch to the Sony ecosystem then I recommend the fx6. Having had the c70 and now fx6, I prefer the Sony for its ergonomics, I/O, vari ND, low light and autofocus. I believe it’s a better business to invest money in for the long run.
If you need a camera to vlog, I would choose any of these. iPhone is most efficient for that.
@@davidmorefield thank you so much!
Hey David. Loving your content. Very nature and informative. Question man. Why not just keep the C70 for those jobs that will ask for you to have a Canon kit? You do a lot of different types of work so having the right tools for those jobs would probably be a plus for you. Sure you can rent but that comes with hassles as you already know. Just wondering your thoughts on that.
R5C is a lighter camera, and I’m pretty sure you see him hand holding for the most part. It’s not always about specs, sometimes convenience can give you a better outcome. It’s inhumane to expect him to hold that heavy camera on a rig for that long. That’s insane.
@@TUTWZRD he never mentioned investing into a R5C. Been following him for a while so I’m pretty versed on his journey. Plus a lot of agencies aren’t requesting a hybrid camera when they are requesting a Canon. So just curious to hear from him about his decision to sell the C70.
@@MarcusRFilms oh ok. I wouldn’t really call the R5C a true hybrid, since it takes forever to go from photo to video. But it’s a great gimbal cam. It’s best if you have photos one day and video another day or if it’s a b cam to another photo cam. Aside from that does most of what the C70 does, most clients won’t care about log profiles or dynamic range.
@@MarcusRFilms he prob rented it.
@@TUTWZRD not sure if you watched the entire video but I know all of that about both cameras. I use them both weekly. The R5C u keep referring to wasn’t his. It doesn’t even have anything to do with my question. But if u watch the video again u will see why I’m asking him this
So the handle is powering your camera and Monitor?
Only camera. Not monitor.
Do you charge separately for mileage are is it all inclusive in your day rate?
This was inside my county, so no travel fee. If there is travel, then it’s irs mileage rate.
As a C70 user its sad to see you sell yours. You got some beautiful footage with it !
I would say the most beautiful footage I’ve captured has been with the c70. There’s potential that I could keep it and add an fx30 instead of fx3, since it’s so cheap. And that way I can take both Canon and Sony requests.
There’s a lot of things that canon does better.
I think if canon stepped their game up a bit and didn’t cripple their mirrorless cameras the way they have, I assume, David would likely keep his C70 and invest in an R5 or something similar. The fact that canon doesn’t allow for unlimited recording in the r5, yet alone clog2, switching to Sony makes sense for a lot of people. I’ve entertained the idea myself. Especially as it relates to A and B can setups.
@@MikeEdwardsphotography I completely looked past the r5 when it overheated in the beginning. It also didn’t have clog2. And yes unlimited recording was the main issue. I film long corporate interviews and I don’t want any camera that doesn’t have unlimited recording. Two card slots preferably.
@@davidmorefield I'm sad to see you moving on from the C70 as well. That's how I found you. But I'm enjoying your journey and these simple and sincere vlogs. So I came for the C70 and stayed for you! Just don't go filming yourself with a BPM and a blue tube light in the background. ;)
@@scotey those tube lights are pretty nice though 🤣
What ISO where you shooting at? 6400?
At the high base. I think it’s 1600
What program you use to put time code?
For timecode on set, we were using tentacle sync. For the timecode in post production, I just used the “timecode” effect in Final Cut Pro. I didn’t use any actual time code, it’s more of a “time counter” since it starts at 0:00.
This way it is easier for the client to see the time rather than looking at the playback scrubber.
What AOD doc are you working on? I'm also a member.
I'm AOD as well, and also curious.
Hey! I finished my recent doc on an mma fighter. And in March, I’d like to participate in the one day doc contest again.
Here’s the short doc I made on a GH5S in 1080p that made it into 5 festivals in Florida. vimeo.com/622626376
Why let C70 go, Sony doesn't do RAW I thought without an Atomos?
Who cares about raw? 😂
@Morefield Visuals haha hey, hey now. Usually, clients always ask for RAW on my end for commercial and sometimes corporate.
@@DirectedbyZ I get asked for "raw" footage as in ungraded. I've never had a production company or client ask for a raw codec.
If you're doing high end commercials, I could easily see it. But at that point I doubt the c70 would be their camera of choice.
Hey David! When is the next meetup?
Aiming for the evening of the 24th. I’m collaborating with a member who will be securing a different venue and has control of the limited seating. So I’ll see if there’s spots available once it is confirmed.
Thank you
Thoughts on using the R5C?
Just not my taste. It worked well in this situation since it was powered by the gimbal but for my normal jobs, I need dual card slots, unlimited recording and better battery life.
@@davidmorefield Gotcha
What gimbal and gimbal handle is that?
It’s the Ronin RS and the handle is the Tilta ring grip. They have few different options for that.
Fabian is correct. It’s the DJI rs3 pro and tilta ring.
What is your day rate?
$1200/10 hours. Single camera, light and sound for interviews.
HDR vídeo?
Rec709
Is that Danny? 2:05
Emmanuel
You're crazy for selling your C70. You're in the position you're in because of it 🤦🏽
Respectfully, I’m in my position bc of my network, work ethic and experience.
My career will not take a dive if I don’t own a c70. Just like my career won’t skyrocket if I own an fx6.
The c70 has helped me in my jobs up to this point, correct. But I don’t get as many calls for canon as I do Sony.
Oh nooo... You're becoming domesticated! Don't get taken in by the chairs and soft pillows, it's a trap! You're just starting to blow-up. Run man... Cry freedom...!
But they’re so comfy
Lol... nice!
