People see the thousands of people saying DONT WORK FOR FREE and don't realize they SHOULD be saying is don't work without having LEVERAGE. That is the key, if you can't find value in doing something for free, don't do it, but there's way to work for free and still leverage your way into still moving forward. If I am spending zero time on paid work, I am working on ways to upgrade my portfolio to show people I am worth being paid. Sometimes that means working with very small businesses that wouldn't be able to pay actual rates.

Dude you are killing it. The stuff you are saying is all stuff I needed to hear almost 25 years ago when I originally tried to start my own business.I got all booked up then didn't have any time to line up any more work so, like you said, I basically started all over again but with a dry (broke) period while I stressed out about paying bills.. Since that time I did educate myself with a wealth of the managment / marketing and other business skills that have been taught in higher learning and you are on target (not that you didn't know that of course! ha) But it's a great reminder now that I'm getting going again after 25 or so years and of course the social media aspect was not a thing back then so thank you for your channel!!!

@@creativegreatsvisualsi guess I was trying to say that instead of paying college or university i looked into what was taught, the books taught from andvread most of them taking notes for myself while doing so. It helps me not only understand what my customers are looking for when hiring a videographer but also lots of little things to do in the video fir the audience. Marketing is huge in any business. You have to sell yourself first.

I myself do this . marketing communication and advertisement is key but they don't really teach all the up to date online or mobile marketing methods because it's forever changing so it's good to look outside the college box as well. both are important

I think a good piece of advice for people starting out is the passion for your work comes first then how can you expedite it comes second. Like most of us gear is important but too much of it can get in your way. Figuring out what is the best workflow for your business is essential to your business excelling. Personally, for myself I’ve been more in the producing side of Filmmaking as of late. I’m gathering more gear to shoot small documentaries and shoots myself but also my main purpose is to make the connections with different clients so I can hire the right people, and overall skill my production higher, I understand my purpose and I understand that the garage doesn’t have to be the greatest because I know the people are higher. Have what I’m looking for.

Free work is so underrated. Not ALL free work is made the same, but strategic free work can produce a lot of ROI. Funny enough, I just got paid my largest paycheck to date because of previous free work. It turned a cold lead into a scorching hot lead.

@@davidmorefield Free work was a 30 second spec work for social media covering an event two years ago. A year after, someone connected to them finds the video, and asked me if they could use it. I said yes, they connected me to the org, and we started talking. It took a few months to finalize the deal, but money has already exchanged hands and we’re under contract. It all depends if you are able to leverage your skills. You don’t have to be the most talented. I’m not even close to what matters is how plugged in you are. How many people you can meet. And most importantly creating opportunities for yourself by making passion projects and sharing them.

    • @davidmorefield

I don’t see a need for that at the moment. The quickest way for her to get clients is through existing network aka friends and family. Same goes for videography, the most accessible branch you have is your friends and family. Brand promo sounds fun but won’t do anything for her rn. She needs to get word of mouth going.
