- After experiencing play in my passenger side output flange from my differential (loud clunking under load and mild vibrations while driving), we decided to try out #RacingDiffs free play and clutch pack upgrade. Great video, however, I was looking forward to seeing you set the backlash and checking the mesh however, that didn't happen.
A lot of people don't with these diffs. They just mark the shims and put them back how they were since the LSD pack doesn't affect backlash.
Interesting video! Is the output flange wiggle just because a worn clutch-pack? I was wondering if the bearings on the crown-wheel also could have something to do with it? I have som play/wiggle on the right side of the diff on my E46 M3, but no other issues in form of noise etc. What is most noticeable is when you switch between 1st and R when parking. There is definitely some play.. Thx :-)
So the output flange wiggle is due to wear on the shim (and maybe too small of?) that mates with the spider gear on the passenger where the output flange would then also mate. The thicker + concave shim fixed that issue.
The clunking from 1st / R is a separate issue, you’re not alone 😂
@@TheCherryGarage ah okay.. but would not a new clutch pack be thicker than a worn/used one? And there for reduce the wiggle as well?
Yeah i just finished my propshaft refurb, changed the cross and cv-joint. As i can understand these propshafts often gets overlooked/unseen.. The inner cv-joints on the driveshafts can also cause problems. Darn cars 😅
I haven’t checked the play in the shafts on mine. But I have a lot of clunking. That notorious clunk you get when putting it into gear or shifting. Sucks because it’s a rebuilt unit from Turner Motorsport, who I think sources them from Diffsonline. I’ve been looking at this RacingDiffs kit for a while now. How has it held up for you now that’s it been the better part of a year?
If it’s a rebuilt unit, it really shouldn’t have failed already. I’d recommend double or triple checking for fully torqued front differential bolt if the clunked is certainly coming from that area.
The Racing diffs kit has held up great close to 6000 miles now, no play in axles and the limited slip clutch pack feels nice.
Awesome upgrade mate. So my BMW 1M (E46 Diff) is making an asthmatic sound when turning tight in a carpark or on long sweeping bends - mostly in 1st gear. Its been doing it since new. Tried the Friction Modifier and it worked for about 6-12 months but the noise keeps coming back. Any suggestions as to what it could be?
When we had similar symptom, filling with BMWs called out diff fluid + FM removed those kind of noises.
That said we haven’t had 6-12 months of driving on it since then. After the rebuild I refilled it with BMW fluid again.
It’s a shame these diffs give us so much grief.
How has this diff held up? I've heard mixed reviews about this kit
It’s held up for close to 10k miles , a lot of which spirited, And a track day now!
It still has some odd E46 M3 noises here and there but I’ve had no issues.
Looks like you can re-use the output shaft snap rings? Or do you need new ones?
As long as they aren't damaged, you may as well replace them, they're too cheap to skip over for concern
