    Lived here for over 30 years and only reason I wouldn’t recommend it is how the city lets the homeless live anywhere they please. It became seriously bad after 2020 .

    I lived in the Felony Flats area of Salem for 4 years. My experiences... Train horns waking you up at 3 AM that echoes throughout the entire city. Homeless mental patients released from the State Mental Hospital terrorizing the streets at all hours of the day, There are more dispensaries then food stores, lousy food, lousy traffic, mold, mold and more mold due to the weather. It was the most depressing city that I have ever lived in, and I have lived all over the world, too. I wised up and moved to Central Oregon.

    We moved from California to Salem and I love it here. I agree it depends on where you move from and what you like. Where we lived it was way more expensive with summers that were 6 months long over 100 almost every day. Drought. Too many people, way more crime, lived in an area with a population of 500,000. We live in west salem which is way nicer than salem proper. So many pine trees and green. I hate the sun, love the overcast rainy days. If I never see another palm tree I'll be happy. I don't have allergies, love gardening and the green forests that are right down the street from my house. The hiking is outstanding, there are waterfalls 30 minutes away, and the beach is only an hour away. Earthquakes are no big deal to me, remember I'm from California. Salem is not for everyone but it definitely is for me. ❤

    Reasons: crime is really bad, human trafficking is a major issue that they don’t even stop, the weather is a nightmare, traffic and driving is basically risking your life. The I5 is a drug corridor that is ran by cartels based in Salem. I did my research and turned down the job! Don’t move to Salem, especially if you have kids!

    “Salem” means “peace.” But you have to give up any bougie pretensions to find that peace here. Most can’t do it and leave. The ones who remain usually aren’t familiar with the term “bougie.”

    • @SalemOR
      @SalemOR  14 днів тому

      This is a sentiment that makes sense to me. Salem is a town and definitely not a large city with too much bougie. That’s not the right fit for everyone.
      What brought you to Salem?

    • @BillLaBrie
      @BillLaBrie 13 днів тому +1

      @@SalemOR I had to get my son away from his malfunctioning mother. I was seeking peace. Kinda found it. There’s nothing to prove to anyone in Salem. If you’re not incarcerated or recently released or in treatment, and you have paying work and a home, you’re doing better than most.

    Hi! Clarification, sorry, the big earthquake we are overdue for. They have stated anything west of I5 is going to be generally unsurvable. Due to the massive tsunami and how devastating the " big one" will be. Yikes.
    You touched on allergies, but you did not mention the GRASS allergies here. We have the worlds highest grass pollen counts here every spring from about late march thru to early july. If you suffer from grass, be aware. Last year we had a world record of over 1300. Anything over 200 is considered " very high". Its debilitating.

    • @SalemOR
      @SalemOR  25 днів тому

      Yes! The pollen here is pretty bad and you're right about the grass. What is your go to remedy for allergies?

    • @WendyW7508
      @WendyW7508 16 днів тому +1

      @SalemOR I have done immunotherapy injections, I stopped after like 2 or so years. It's supposed to do 5 years. Did oral immunotherapy. Drops under the tongue from a ENT/ allergist. That helped a bit. But not with grass. I use Claritin, nose spray, eye drops, and corticosteroids inhaled for allergy induced asthma. And I still am miserable for about 3 months a year. Ugh.

    Salem has made me want to die. Salem has damn near killed me. I moved away several times with different boyfriends but when the relationships came to an end and I couldn't afford to live alone I wound up living with family in Salem again and here I am stuck. Currently in a long distance relationship and he and I are hoping to move to Washington or Colorado or something.

    Good video.. not for me though. I'm a MA resident living in an extremely walkable/bikeable area, out of sheer necessity. Traffic is stopped dead most days, and public transportation sucks and is outdated. I see in this video there aren't many bike lanes or infrastructure to get around by bike. That's too bad.

    • @SalemOR
      @SalemOR  4 місяці тому +1

      It is too bad, I hope that the city of Salem makes more walkable infrastructure and the ability to live car free. They are making more bike lanes, but honestly I wouldn't bike in this city in 10000 years.
      Would you ever live in the PNW?

    • @jimbarrofficial
      @jimbarrofficial 4 місяці тому +1

      @@SalemOR Most likely no. I hear nightmarish stories from places like Portland and Seattle about cities drowning in homeless and drugs. We have enough of those issues here, but the public would not tolerate that level of social decay.

    • @SalemOR
      @SalemOR  4 місяці тому

      I totally understand where you're coming from. Salem isn't the right place for everyone. Heck, Oregon isn't the right place for everyone. Hopefully those who watch my videos will have ample information to decide if Salem is (or is not) the right place for them.

    Single male with a cat😂 looking into relocating from Chicago for work. Can you speak on public transit? I take the train and bus here.

    • @SalemOR
      @SalemOR  3 місяці тому +2

      One of my personal gripes is that we are severely lacking in public transportation. However, Salem is MUCH smaller than Chicago so expect a 20 minute car drive to get about anywhere.
      We do have a bus system, but I don’t think it’s that robust.
      Definitely be prepared to have a car in this city.
      Can’t wait to help ya move here and help your kitty cat find a nice PNW home ◡̈

    • @SalemOR

      Property taxes in Salem are 1% of the homes value. This will vary based on the specific home but that this is a good rule of thumb if you're needing rough numbers.
      If your house is worth $500,000, expect to pay ~$5,000 in property taxes.
