This is still a great song here in 2024!
Mama Cass gave M & P's "guts" And Phillips gave its melody. They will never come again, but their music will be an impression that will stand the test of time. Who agrees?
I totally agree with you❤
Absolutely
Magnificent 😊
Yo
@@traceyquick865 Michell Phillips., que jónica i quienes cancons tan macas que ens an deixat. Juanito.
There are an almost endless number of absolutely great songs from the 1960s but this is one of those iconic numbers that stands at the pinnacle with very few others.
Bridge over troubled water
Good Vibrations
Mama Cass, your voice was the voice of an angel.
I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this song, I listen to it once a day and it feels like I’m hearing it for the first time over and over again, I’ll never get sick of it 😃
Brookee92 Monday Monday too
here, I feel melancholy even if i'm from '77....
I'm from 80.. my father was student during the 60ies, and I just saw a documentary about the Vietnam war and the student revolutions during that time..
Same!
Also love the San Francisco song
The heavy voice and tone of Mama Cass makes this group
Foi cortado
No ed Sulivan show de 1966
It makes this song for sure.
Absolutely!
no doubt
No the effort of all of them make this group
This wasn't just a song, this was an ANTHEM--It perfectly captured the good feelings and the creative spirit of the times.
Now look at it, they are all dreaming of leaving.
i can only imagen how good it was, such a beautiful song. its a shame i was born under the watchful eye
the gay guy had the voice of a fat chick
@@AsylumDWP09
Without doubt the 60s and 70s were the golden age of rock music.
111% AGREE!.....
Mid 50's as well.
Ken Lizzio Golden Age of music altogether!
This is exageration !
Ken Lizzio I love late 50s-70 music, from Doo Wops to Soul
Cass was the grooviest chick to ever draw breath
Something in her did not believe this or she would not have done drugs..adductions is about pain
@@estelleschneider9033 idiot
@@estelleschneider9033 A very simplistic and rather clumsy summation of addiction. And why is everyone so obsessed with Cass’s drug use? It was the 1960s - pretty much everyone on the music scene was taking something. There are so many more interesting and positive things about Cass to talk about.
I think Michelle was. Cass was great too.
No synthesizers, just the purity and Angelicness of human voice.
idesofmarchUNIAEA a unique group very very sadly missed 😧😧😧
autotune has severely messed up modern music. Calitornia Dreaming reminds how good it was back before music was processed through only a few record labels and even fewer radio conglomerates
Angelicness?
1965 this song is beautiful. 2019 this song is wonderful. 2097 this song is amazing.
Timeless!!!
No better belter ever lived than the late great Mama Cass. RIP, beautiful lady.
What a great time to grow up. We didn't know how good we had it.
We never knew ( until now ) how good we really had it. But, we all thought [[ foolishly ]] those good times would last forever; well, at least I did........
Heard that
That time washes over me, and for a split second I'm in that world again, then it's gone 💔
But the fashion. Good lord it blew great big goats…
Hands down, the best genre ever. It’s a shame music like this is not longer produced.
Such an era of music! How blessed are we who experienced it. And now, after these many years...as fresh as ever!
Without a doubt this is one of the greatest songs of all time sung by the special Mamas and Papas. It will NEVER date and l will NEVER tire of listening to it.
God, the music coming out during this period was Magical. And we being young thought it would last forever....
Drugs helped
Starship Trooper wish we could go back permanently 😧
I agree with you
It will.
We won't🥳
@@McCurtainCounty888 LOL
Goodness me.. Michelle is so impossibly beautiful..
She was definitely a honey!!
Ur one sick stupid POS!
Well, you and your boyfriend enjoy!!
Beautiful, yes, and had affairs with Doherty and Gene Clark of the Byrds, at least. Was fired from the band by her husband John and then returned because they were under contract to make albums
Jeff Lloyd You need to get your facts straight.
1. Mackenzie Phillips was not John and Michelle's daughter. Her mother was John's first wife, Susan Adams. John and Michelle only had one child together, Chynna, who wasn't even born until 1968, well after this video was recorded.
2. The alledged incest took place from 1979-88, long after this performance, long after the Mama's & the Papa's broke up, and long after John and Michelle had divorced. So, clearly he wasn't "fucking their daughter on a regular basis," at the time of this performance.
3. The incest allegations didn't come out until 2009, 8 years after John's death, and a full 20 years after the supposed incest ended. They also coincidently corresponded with the release of a "tell all" book by Mackenzie. Nothing like a bombshell incest accusation to help sell books. BTW, Mackenzie had also just been busted for heroin and cocaine possession immediately prior to her allegations. Nothing like a sexual abuse sob story to help gain sympathy during the sentencing phase of a drug use trial.
4. Mackenzie was 20-29 years old during the period in question. I can't imagine an adult woman allowing something like that to happen for such a long period of time.
5. Both Michelle, and Genevieve Waite, John's third wife during the time of the alledged incest, have always denied the allegations. I'm sure that John would have too, had he still been alive to defend himself.
So what we have is a life long heavy drug user, (Mackenzie) who claims to have been in a 10 year incestuous relationship with her father throughout her 20's, that no one else around her knew anything about, and she says nothing about it until 20 years after the fact, and 8 years after her father died and could no longer defend himself. She also waits until she's broke, in desperate need of money, writing a tell all book, and awaiting sentencing for drug possession before making the claims. Yah right. I smell bullshit.
Maybe it happened, and maybe it didn't. But at the very least there is considerable legitimate doubt.
You'd have to look far and wide to find an old classic that beats *this* one!
This song makes my soul travel to a place I cannot describe. Cas's voice just makes this song a sublime bliss to listen to.
Now this kinda music I can listen to all day long.
singing In bed!!! :) :) to this song 12:36 am on a Friday..

this is not a type of music, it's one super amazing mamas and papas song. if you can find anything this good with a similar vibe please share
I like when the camera turns towards the blonde as she sings I get down on my knees
Mama Cass sang so beautifully
San Fran baby u don't know
They'll be playing this 100 years from now and people will be dreaming of what life was like at the time this song was released and wishing they could have been there.🤗
When I was in high school it was still "go West young man" and everybody was "California Dreaming." Sadly, I think the dream and the sentiment are gone.
Railroaded.
Nope, we’re still California Dreaming 🌴
@@lisalim453Then keep dreaming buddy just don't trip over the dope addicts and watch out for the poop.
Who said, ''Go West young man''? Well, that was either Horace Greeley or George Custer; depending on who you want to believe. None of California, including San Diego, is anything like what it once was. That aura and wonderful mystique are long, { probably forever } and everyone now wants to leave the Once Great State of California.
@@brittongodman7769 It was Horace Greeley and google seems to confirm it. Sadly, your appraisal of present day California is true.
Mama Cass pulled all that harmony together... That's what making music IS
Song is as powerful today as it was back then! Great songs never die!
So true. I first heard this in 1966. I was in Grade 2. It touched my soul as child. And now as an old man bonds my soul to that wonderful time. I never tire of listening to this timeless treasure.
This song is what made me finally decide to ride my Motorcycle in 1965 to move to California.
This is when California was California, unfortunately times changed! All the leaves are brown, & the skies are gray tell it all!
Nice metaphor
Now all the people are brown and gay :)
Keep electing these fucking Democrats and that's what you get.
@@mrspider7185 spidey u are hilarious 😅😅😅
California sucks, earthquakes, landslides!!! And their government sucks even worse! Wouldn't go there, ever... ✌
Is there any other folks who grew up with hippy parents and were so lucky to listen to this music as a child? I still love it today, and it should be remembered!!!!!!
alan taunton not hippy but wide range of music
Meee - boomers were shit parents but they introduced us to some groovy tunes
I was the hippie girl who blasted the music!!🎶🎵🎼🎼🎼🤘🤘✨🌹
A hauntingly beautiful jam with an amazing flute solo.
I really like the electric flute, very beautiful and soothing. Do you?
I can listen to this whole night, and day. Gorgeous, Splendid!
Love Mama Cass
+Gang Liu I can "watch" them all day. Beyond the music, their performance style and mannerisms are so engaging and fascinating. Especially Mama Cass Elliot but all of them really. They bucked the trend at the time - while they did write much of their own music they didn't really perform with instruments, except for the occasional acoustic guitar and a tambourine. They were vocalists on stage but that's what made them so compelling. Their harmonies were unsurpassed.
This is the making of the real performer. A real talent. They were a wonderful group, them, Peter Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan all of them knew just how to strum a tune.....
I can listen to this whole night too...
Mama Cass had the cutest little step.
This was the closest thing to perfection that 60s pop music ever achieved.
Gracies
Denny Doherty's and Cass Elliott's voices WERE the backstop of The Mamas and the Papas.
,ch
Except it was John and Michelle that wrote the song. John did most of the writing and did all those great vocal arrangements. If there was a backstop, it was JP.
No one is denying that John could write. But it was Doherty and Elliot who had the voices.
that was a given
@@ngabushallday6642absolutely no one believes her though even those closest to her... i personally think shes a loon ...tho i might be wrong
California is not just a state in the union, it is a state of mind. I spent part of my childhood in the Monterey Peninsula. Best home and the most fun I ever had. I've been back several times since and each time I wish I could stay forever.
I wasn’t even born when this song was written but it’s an amazing song and the harmonies are beautiful really makes you feel good
Oldies but goodies will always be number 1
Along The Beatles, Bee Gees and ABBA , the best harmony of voices .
the seekers version pisses all over this, not that this not good by the way, timeless song any generation
Старт на Эйнштейн был прав. Пространство и время имеют смысл. Приехали и Калифорнии в Нью- Йорк, а там снегопад....
The Mamas and the Papas...you can not deny the great songs they came out with. Great stuff!
Magnificent. It's the only adjective that I can think for this song.
“You know the preacher like the cold!” Man..... that is the most genius line ever!
What does it meann?
It's supposed to be "the preacher lights the coals", meaning he turned the heat on "because he knows I'm gonna stay". They did not sing the song as written.
I wanna go back, but those days are gone.
Me too 😢
Rip cass your big heart is missed by your family
America's first comeback song to the British Invasion. Stands the test of time. Never gets old.
cass was the soul of this group for sure
Music from the 1960s to 1980s was definitely the best music of all time.
This song was in the charts when I met my future wife. We have been married for fifty five years and I will have it played at my funeral - but hopefully not for some time!
Gran canción que voz de mamá cas Eliot en paz descanse😊❤
Can we just sit back for a second and not just admire the song but how stunning Michelle looks?
I think if she had ever looked at me, I would have melted.
She's ok. Stunning is Raquel Welsh or Ann Margaret etc. around the same time.
I grew up listening to this stuff because my dad played it often. (I'm 52) This song makes me nostalgic for a time I never knew. Weird, huh?
Growing up in Virginia, in high school, sorority meetings on Sunday, driving around afterwards with my friends, pooling our money for gas money, grape bubblegum, Cokes, cigarettes, music on the radio, cranking up the volume for this one, singing out loud. It didn’t matter whether we could sing well because we were young, the sun was shining, we had plans for Myrtle Beach after school was out, heck, we simply had plans because we were young and the road ahead was wide open and welcoming. ☺️
At least you can understand what they are saying, love the 60's and 70's music.
This songs takes me to a different place. Just the voice of Cass is amazing.
Mama Cass was this group rest in peace Mama cass she was such a beautiful woman and got no respect from the group
You are so right, such a sad story 🥺
Imo absolutely no doubt the 60's and 70's were the the best eras of all time.. In all history!!! and this masterpiece song shows that.. I can listen to It every day, I love the song, and I know I will never get sick of It.. It's Immortal ❤️😊💯🤟

One of the most beautiful piece of music ever written... I love every second of this song...
One of the 10 best songs in the 60s...it was heavenly!
This song helped make me want to go to California when I was growing up in St. Louis, MO. So I did. Been in LA for 35 years.

Boy, oh boy... that bass is absolutely _kickin'!_
The rhythm section on this track is one of my all-time favorites. I don't think people realize just how hard this song rocks, really. Along with those angelic voices, the song is propelled forward like it's on jet fuel... 🔥🔥🔥 That's why I can listen to it on repeat, endlessly.
I don't know why but this song makes my sprit travel and it also makes me feel sad for some strange reason as if I am missing something.
Simply put...STILL ONE OF THE GREATEST SONG EVER WRITTEN & RECORDED!!!

I was there too, best time of my life, so exciting! The Filmore west was fantastic, I listened to the Who, Jeff Beck Group ( with Rod Stewart, unknown then) and many others, Just missed Janis Joplin with two days.
A beautiful timeless song.
Cass may not win a beauty contest, but her dance was so lovely to watch time and time again.
THE best song ever made!!!
I go back to my young years every time I hear this. The world was a different place then ❤

Music when created from the soul becomes eternal... when created to make money it’s forgotten in a few decades. Didn’t grew in America and this song was always embedded in my brain like a nostalgic dream from a world i never met.
i was there, and their music was superb.
So glad we had music of this calibre when I was a teen. I feel sorry for youngsters today.
