Five Ways to Resize Images in Affinity Photo

- In this video, I explain five ways to resize an image using Affinity Photo. Each method of image resizing has its strengths and weaknesses, and none is perfect. The video also explains the different controls in each method, and there are some surprising results when making image enlargements.
The methods of image resizing explained in the video are:
1. Resizing the image canvas and how this is different to the image.
2. Resizing the document as well as how resampling works.
3. Resizing Pixel Art which also works well for photography.
4. Resizing on Export.
5. Resizing in the Export Persona, which allows for the batch resizing of images.

thought I was an unusual Affinity user because I've always used bridge (CS5.5)because I can get all raw images from my camera card easily, then sort and cull with adobe bridge. Thanks for confirming my choice!

No, but you can enter mm into any of the fields e.g. type 310mm and that's what you get. Also many of the dialogs have a setting where you can change from pixels to mm. Everything else is then just the same.
Hello Robin, great video. Which method would you suggest to resize digital printable wall art? I would like to take a picture and resize the original document and save in different file types. For example I create my document as 16"x20" but then want to resize to 18"x24", 24"x36" and 11"x14" without loosing integrity. I then want to export to pdf, jpg and png. What is the best way to do this? Please help. Thank you in advance!!!
Finish editing your image and then save that as a master file in the .afphoto format. You can then resize the document using the Resize Document command in the Document menu. I would suggest using one of the Lanczos methods for resizing. The problem that you will encounter is that the sizes you want to use are a different aspect ratio to the image you are resizing. You only have three options to deal with this.
1) Distort the original image by removing the aspect ration constraint (which will probably mess up the image).
2) Enlarge the smallest side of the image to the new size which will create a bigger image than you want on the longest edge. You will then need to crop the image to the new aspect ration. The downside to this is that you will be cropping out parts of the document that you might not want to.
3) Enlarge the longest edge of the image to the new size. You then enlarge the Document Canvas to match the new desired image size. The downside to this is that it creates a white edge around the image with empty space where the image isn't large enough to fill the canva.
It's a matter of pickling the least "offensive" of the options based on the image and intended use.
Once you have the document resized, export it to the format you want. After that you will probably want to close the image without saving and reopen your master file to resize and export again.

I think that's a great idea. You should mention it on the Affinity forum if you haven't already.
In Affinity Photo when you have a image in a rectangle how do you edit the rectangle height or width without stretching or compressing the image inside, Im trying to just select the rectangle and not the image.
I'm assuming you have placed the image inside the rectangle by drawing a rectangle and the rectangle is over the image in the Layers panel. You then used the "Mask to Below" to create a clipping mask so that only the image area inside the rectangle is visible. Select the image layer and then in the Affinity Photo Toolbar click the "Lock Children" option. You can now resize the image or the rectangle independently. Just remember to drag from the corner of the image to maintain the aspect ratio or hold down Shift as you drag.

Strange, the Resize Document option doesn't create any change in the image. Possibly because it's a trial version?
I doub't they restricted the trial version. Whilst the document might look any different, have you tried applying Resize Document a second time to check what the pixel dimension is? You shoud notice it's changed. I can't imagine this feature not working.

I am trying to upload the photo to a printing lab however my issue is that it's larger than 15 MB so I need to bring it a little which is different than any of the options available have you any idea how I can resize the MB?
You don't say what dimensions the image is that you are sending or in what file format so I won't make any assumptions. First ensure your image is sized for the size of print you want to create. If you ware printing a 10" x 10" print and the recommended print dpi is 300, then the image should be 3,000 x 3,000 pixels. There's no point sending a bigger image file so be sure to check the recommended dpi.
Second, what file format are you using? Be sure to use JPEG rather than TIFF or PNG. Theoretically TIFF files may have a better quality but you wouldn't tell in a photo lab print.
Third, pick a suitable quality level to save the JPEG. If you are exporting the JPEG from Affinity Photo, you can go down to 70% (possibly lower) and not see any problems. A JPEG exported at 70% quality should produce a great print and be small.

As I watched this I recalled that Affinity Publisher permits you to do simple calculations within some of its data entry fields. For example, appending "*2" to an existing value multiplies it by 2. + and - also work, and I assume "/" is supported though I haven't tried it. I just realized I've never tried doing this in Photo. I assume it also works there.
Good point. I haven't tried it but suspec it will work. There seems to be a lot of shared features between Publisher, Photo and Designer.

I am trying to reduce a photo of a painting without losing resolution. But resampling still causes me to lose sharpness/detail. In photoshop I would change image size and not resample. I need to go from 4000px/300dpi to 2000px/300dpi, which I have done but still lose detail. How d I retain the detail?
You can also change the size of the image without resampling in Affinity Photo. Go to Document, Resize Document in the Photo Persona menu. In the dialog, untick the "Resample" option. Now increase your dpi from 300 to 600. This will half the physical size of the document when printed without resampling. Alternatively you can change the units in the dialog to inches, uncheck the resample option and enter the new size in inches.
If you need to reduce actual number of pixels rather than increasing the ppi of the image, you may need to apply additional sharpening. Photoshop does this autumatically when you downsize images when you use the default "Automatic" resampling option. You can also change the resampling method in Affinity Photo when resizing a document. Try using one of the Lanczos 3 methods to see if it improves your results.

I have been asked to supply an image at 800 Kb size from my much larger file but cannot figure out how to do it! Its driving me mad.
The two main ways to reduce the file size of an image are to 1) reduce the number of pixels by reducing the image dimensions 2) increase the compression of the image. The JPEG format is the most common but could you use the WebP format which allows for more efficient compression? It usually has a smaller footprint than the same image in JPEG format.
Another concise and well informed video. I have the PDF book mentioned in the tutorial and like all his stuff it covers everything you need. He just gets it done.

How does this compare to picture enlargement using Topaz tools
That really depends on the quality of what you are enlarging and the scale of the enlargement. You should be able to double the dimensions of a regular photo in Affinity without much problem. Beyond that you will probably find tools like Topaz Gogapixel perform better. You can probably get better results using Topaz Photo AI as well although my experience in the past has been that it isn't as good as Gigapixel (but I haven't tested it recently).

Thanks. This is another option if you are using the Move Tool although it only resizes the selected object or objects and will leave the canvas size unchanged. I din't want to include too much in this video in case it causes confusion.
I am wanting to add a background image to an existing image with transparent background. When I add it as a separate layer, it's way bigger than the original that I opened it. How do I resize that image to accommodate the original size of my picture so it looks good proportionally?
You need to use the Move Tool in the Photo Person Tool Palette to click the corner of the layer and then drag it to resize. If the aspect ratio of the new layer doesn't match the original image you have two options: 1. stretch the layer to make the image fit but that will distort it. 2. crop it to have the same aspect ratio.
I saw you mention Capture One in the comments. Is there anyway to setup an Affinity preset that remembers my preferred resize dimensions when exporting? i.e. like a C1 Recipe where you can specify 2000px on the Long dimension (for example)? I'm doing my head in having to type in the same old dimensions for every photos when exporting. Many thanks for all your great Affinity related videos.
Yes, you can set up export presets in Affinity Photo. I explain how to do this in my "Affinity Photo How To" book (sorry, I need to promote it when I can). In the Export dialog, change the settings and then click the More button at the bottom. This opens additional options for the export and there's also a "Manage Presets" button at the bottom. Click that and you can create a new preset using the settings you entered. Once you've saved it, you will be able to use it in the Export dialog by clicking on the Presets dropdown. I can't remember but you may need to close and reopen the Export dialog for a newly saved Preset to show up. Hope this helps.
@@RobinWhalley Many thanks for your reply. I had already worked out how to create my own Export presets, but unless I'm doing something wrong, my presets don't include the dimensions, so I still have to set the size required each time I do an export.

Is there a way to change in image size by percentage %? I’d like to reduce the image size by, say, 50%. I can’t seem to figure out how to do that.
Yes. Use the document resize or export options like I describe but leave the units set to pixels (it's easier to see that way). Highlight one of the fields and type in 50%. When you move to the other field, the 50% is replaced by a number representing 50% of the pixel dimensions. I hope this helps.

Hi Robin. Your videos are super. Thank you. I have only just found Affinity Photo and I am looking for a feature that was in Photoshop CS5. I am a graphite artist and have to enlarge my reference photos. In Photoshop I was able to chose the photo size and when I clicked print I could place the photo to fit on a legal size sheet and then print second to accommodate size. From there I would match and tape. This gives me the actual size of the drawing I am to draw. Is there such a feature or way to do this on Affinity Photo. Thank you. All the best. LInda
I'm not sure I'm following what you are doing in Photoshop. In Affinity you have the image and the document sizes which you can adjust independantly. When you come to printing you can pick another size to print to. It's also possible to print individual layers in the document rather than the entire thing but I don't think this is what you are trying to do. Does adding Guides to the document help? You can set the document rules to show any dimension and then add guides to all sides so you can see the boundary.

Then tape them together to create the larger version I need as a full reference size. Hope that makes sense. But I do understand your instructions and I think I can manage to make it work. @@bethbennett476 You may have changed your Affinity layer from the default. It's possible to configure most aspects and you can sometimes make changes without realising.

Ok so how do I resize an image to 8x10 inch photo without compromising the quality of the photo?
That would depend on the size, resolution and aspect ratio of your starting image. If your current image is smaller than 8 x 10 at 300dpi then it needs to be enlarged. As a rough guide you can probably double it before you would see problems. If the image is currently larger than 8 x 10 at 300dpi then just reduce the size to get to 8 x 10 at 300dpi. If your current image isn't in the 4:5 aspect ratio required for an 8 x 10 print then you will need to crop it to that aspect ratio first. Why? It's a photo editor and for most jobs the resizing options offered are more than good enough. If you want to make huge enlargements Gigapixel is a better option.

At the start of every and any Affinity youtube video thier is an ad for Adobe. I though the adverts were not allowed to target certain brands\users ets??? I smell Antitrust shinaganins here lol.
I think the Ads are based on user interest. Because you watch Affinity videos they know you like photo editing and serve those ads. Try watching a Capture One video (hopefully one of mine) to see if you get the same ads.
unfortunately affinty has gotten worse, there is no document menu or resample box to uncheck it
There is a Document menu in the latest desktop version of Affinity Photo and it works just the way that I demonstrate in the video. Are you using the iPad version by any chance as that's diffferent?
