Very good tutorial indeed, Robin. Well paced and balanced. We will use this as one tutorial in our sessions here in Auckland. One little point - another way of fixing mistakes, is to use the Undo Brush Tool. I am never always sure in what circumstances it will work, but tried on my effort and it did work.
Glad you liked it. Yes you are correct about using the Undo brush. I didn't want to get into using it because I want to do the Undo Brush as another video.

I read the comments and see it works on strong colours only. I have a photo with green screen and in between my hair I want to change the green colour to the chosen background colour. It is always much lighter. What other alternative command would be good for this purpose? So far I like this software.
I would still probably use this colour replacement brush for this work, but it's difficult to say without seeing the particular image. For a problem like you describe, I would use a large brush so that I can place the centre over the green background, but the edge of the brush also covers the head. The sample is then taken from the background but all the green within the brush is replaced, including the areas between the hair. The usual mistake is trying to use a small brush for this work because it then forces you to move the centre of the brush over the hair. This causes the hair colour to be sampled and replaced. I hope this makes sense.
I must be missing something. I couldn't get any good effects on a photo of a person that I wanted to change the background color so, I screen captured your ship photo. I went through the steps, picking the brush, setting the oppacity, flow and tolerance to 100. Then I picked the same green color you did and sure enough it can change the red to green BUT, at no time did I tell it I wanted to change the red. Also it can change the sky, green, I didn't tell it I wanted to change it either. It seems to cleanly color the ship but nothing around it if I flow outside the edge of the ship. How can it replace the color I want to replace? I can change this sky to green...again without picking blue as something I want to change. It seems to randomly pick colors to change. If I try and change my color to white, I get a deep gray...even on the red ship, set the color to white to paint the ship white, and it paints a dark gray. So I tried some other colors, I picked a very light blue part of the sky as the paint color, went to the ship and it wants to paint it a much deeper blue, run that same color over the dark water and it does almost nothing. What am I missing? Where are these color "choices" coming from?
Two points that may help. First, the tool only works with colour. It won't work on grey or near grey tones (including black and white). If there isn't a strong colour then it's not the right tool. Second, you only select the colour you want to change to. The software then detects the colour below the brush when paiting and samples that to replace. I hope this helps.
@@RobinWhalley Hi Robin. I'm reading your response to Path11 Media here. I see you noted what I discovered, that the tool doesn't work with black and and white. Say your ship was white and you wanted to make it green. What tool would you use to affect this? Thanks.
@@RobinWhalley I could not get it to work properly until I changed to "Hard Light" blend mode. If I used "Normal" blend mode, the result was a tinted combination of the existing color and the new color. In any event, thank you for your timely response to my question.
@@boogiefan1 Sorry, I have no idea what might be causing that without watching your desktop. It should work by painting on any pixel layer where there is colour. Just a though, check that that you don't have a Blend Mode set for the brush in the toolbar.
@@RobinWhalley I finally got it to work by setting my Color Picker tool to multiple pixels, rather than leaving it at one pixel. You had mentioned in your video that you used 3 pixels, but I completely missed that. Thanks again, Robin for your input, and I look forward to more of your excellent videos. Have a blessed day!
I'm trying to change the colour of alloy wheels on a car but it wont change on the alloys but it changes the colour of the car no problem why would this be?
The colour adjustment tools only work to change existing colours. I suspect your alloy wheels are silver or neutral grey so don't have any colour. There is a recolour adjustment layer which can be used to add colour to a black and white image. You may be able to use that with some careful masking and painting to add some colour.
It detects the colour you are painting over by sampling from the central area of the brush. You can control this with the settings I explained in the video.
This won't work for me. I have a png with black lines on transparent background and no matter what I do, the tool will only replace the TRANSPARENT background. It refuses to do anything with the black. I am about to break something I am so frustrated
It doesn't work for me. It only gives it a light colour replacmenet; for e.g. dark brown turns to a diarrhea type yellow.. more like an overlay for some reason
It's because the tool works with the Hue element of the colour. If there isn't a stong Hue then the replacement colour also has a weak Hue. If you try it on white, black or grey you'll find it doesn't have any effect.
The brush will only replace an intense colour with another. If you are trying to colour something that’s a neutral grey, white or black it won’t do anything. That may be your problem.
Great tutorial! Clear, concise and well presented
Thank you. This one did seem to come together quite easily which is a good sign.
