3 Tools For Color Grading In Affinity Photo - Beginner Tutorial

- Color grading is a great way to add your own style to an image to make it look amazing. In Affinity Photo, there are 3 tools/adjustments that I always find myself going back and using for just about every photo. In this video, I go through those and show you how and when to use them. We'll cover how to use a gradient map, the curves adjustment, and selective color so you can quickly get a good-looking color grade on your images. I hope you find this useful for your edits!

@@planetguam8475 No none of the legends went to school! Where did these guys go to school: Henri Cartier Bresson? Ansel Adams? Miss Aniela? Leni Riefenstahl? Some of the other street photographer, can't remember their names. Leni was doing this ballet thing and got cast in movies and the director started showing her how to use a camera. That how she started making movies. By the time she met Hitler in the late 30's he had already seen her films and so asked her to shoot Triumph Of The Will and stuff. Sometimes they show Jessie Owens, a black man winning at the Olympics in Berlin 1836, who do you think filmed all that? Leni even got yelled at by Dr. Goebbels during that and Goring, head of the Luftwaffe had to come save her! Leni was the only one who walked out of the Third Reich. History is written by the victors so if you want to hear the German side you'll have to get it from her.

Super helpful video! thank you so much! As someone who does photography as a hobby, I have taken courses on the basics of editing photos, but I have never been taught how to color grade. I think color grading adds that extra pop to photos and gives photos the life they’re missing. It takes the quality to the next level and I have been wanting to step up my post production skills for the longest time.

I just learned something new with these whole HEX sliders, pretty cool info. there's a lot steps to follow, shyt I'm here taking notes on everything just to edit s song cover lol
I mostly use CaptureOne for color work, because it is easier to use and not so overloaded with features, but I also have Affinity. I think I'll play around with it a little more to get a feeling as to in which cases it is superior.
Nice! I've been thinking about trying CaptureOne. Affinity photo is great if you really want to take complete control over your images beyond just color work. It's definitely worth testing it out for different situations.

Again, another solid tutorial and advice....Don't know if you've considered a vid on color balancing composites, say 2 or 3 different images, in Affinity Photo?, may prove very popular and useful...keep up the good work.

I never used gradient map, not knowing how it could be used for (thanks to the odd default colours). What about HSL / HSV to colour grade. It seems to me this tools is as powerful as Selective Colour, plus you can select the range of colours you want to be affected (For example if you selectd the reds, you can select how wide or narrow the reds are.) Something you can't do it in the Selective Colour panel. What do you think ?
Oh yeah. I use hsl with pretty much every photo. Every tool kinda has their own best use for. I plan on doing more videos on each of the adjustments you can do but you are absolutly right. HSL is very powerful and widely used

Great tutorial, however adding blue with selective color to black is taking away yellow. In black CMY is at maximum which gives you black so in order to get blue, green , or red you have to respectfully take away from CMY. Minus cyan is red, minus magenta is green, and minus yellow is blue. CMY is the upside down RGB, Since you are working in a color space which is based on RGB model. If you understand the relationship between the two models, CMYK and RGB, it becomes much easier to get what you want with Selective Color. I enjoyed your tutorial very much, very informative. Thanks.

How do you decide in Selective Colour which Colour you need to choose and make changes to and Target ?
Unfortunately, the best advice I have is just to mess around with the sliders until you get something that starts to look nice. After you do it on a bunch of photos, you start to realize what to change. I would say to start with just editing the whites, neutrals and blacks to give yourself a base. Then start messing with the other colors.
Is there a place to get some good gradient maps? Or can we pick gradient map from a picture?
I don't know of anywhere to get specifically gradient maps. you can always save presets you like. I have a video on how to steal a color grad from a photo using gradient maps if you wanted to check that out though.
why do you delete the midtones on this image?? do u always do that or is for certain images
How to correctly adjust the colors of manual drawings after scanning to become identical to the original when printed on paper ?
I'm sorry but I'm not sure I know how to help with this. That's something I haven't done. The only tip I could say would be to use the color picker inside the HSL adjustment and move around the hue bar until the colors are where you need them to be. Otherwise you can get color pickers on your phone that will tell you the color of what you point the camera at and you can use that to change it in Affinity Photo. Other than that I'm not sure. Hope you figure it out!

Yeah, I was recommending that you use a color picker app to see what color is on the drawing so you can match the exact color in Affinity Photo because then you know what hex code to match it too. Sorry, I didn't clarify that. I'm sorry that I'm not much help. I haven't done any scanning before, I mostly just do photography so I won't be much of a help to your situation. Thank you for asking though, I wish I could help!

How do I do this in lightroom?
Thank you I'm glad you liked it. In lightroom, things are a bit different but it mostly has the same sort of tools to color grade.
The way I recommend to color grade in lightroom is by selecting the image in your library and go into the develop tab. In there you'll find all your color grading tools. You can use the curves in the same way I showed here.
Then you can use HSL/Color and Split toning to really dial in your color grade. For example, if you want a teal and orange look like in this video, you can go down to split toning and move the hue slider to an orange color(you can hold alt or option while moving the slider to see what its changing).
Then put the saturation slider up until you like the way it looks and then do the same with the shadows but with a blue color.
Hope this helps. If you want some good videos on how to color grade in lightroom you can checkout a channel called "Photos In Color" for some good tutorials or "Maarten Schrader" has some great tutorials on achieving similar looks to other photographers/editors on instagram.
I have watched this a few times, and frankly I am stuck on the selection of the colors to use as a gradient? What are we trying to achieve with the color selection? I think it is adding those colors into the shadows and highlights? Or we trying to match the warmth of the coolness for a photo. When I try to apply this to say a shot of yellow Autumn leaves I can't get the photo to comeback where it looks more "normal". I am missing something I am sure. Or perhaps I am using an incorrect tool, as the examples all have clearly defined subjects separated from the background.
Michael - tried to find your email and couldn't so thought I would try to contact here. I have been trying to find someonw on youtube that I felt could teach me as I have been really challenged with Affinity. So I'm going give a shot with you as I obseerved the aboe video and thought it was well done. I'm trying to create a border with a drop shadow. Don't know if I can attach a file to this comment but will try. I would like to show the border and drop shadow whichi I can do but I can't seem to get rid of the white border around the shadow. Hope you can help.
Hey! The way I would do it would be to use layer effects from the bottom of the layers panel. From there, you can add an outline and an outer shadow to whatever layer you need. Hope this helps!
Why don't have I the adjustment button on my Affinity
Make sure you are in the layers panel. it will be at the bottom of the panel. Otherwise you can go to the adjustments panel and they'll all be there as well. If you don't see that you can go to view > studio > adjustments to bring them up. Hope this helps!

I wouldn't say it's more powerful, but it does feel better. It seems to run better on my computer and the workflow feels a lot better than Photoshop's. I do love Affinity Photo, even more than Photoshop. It's awesome!

Photoshop is still the best for complex stuff and you have a lot of filters and effects to play with. Affinity can do 95% of it, although some requires 1 or 2 extra steps. However that is exactly the problem with Photoshop, it complicates simple things even down to selecting and moving objects. Affinity makes the tools so natural and easy to use. I have permanently migrated to Affinity for 2 years now. I only use photoshop when working with other designers.

Thank you! If you have the old workspace the same principles should still apply otherwise you might have to update to the latest version of Affinity Photo. You can always move the different tabs around too. That way you can make a layout that works best for you!
Why do you call that blue teal? You first call it teal, then, as an admission of sorts, say that it's *considered* to be teal. This makes me very curious.
It's basically because the "look" is called teal and orange but it's really about putting bluish tints into the shadows and orangish tints into the highlights. I doesn't have to exactly be teal. It's also very possible I just messed up my wording, I can't quite remember.
I'm coming from Photoshop and I can't even do the easiest things in Affinity. Like here I don't even find the tools in the lower right of the window where you have them. About to go back to Photoshop where I find things.
Man, I felt the same way when I switched. Mostly with keyboard shortcuts. I kept doing the wrong ones because there's a couple different shortcuts. But, just like photoshop, you can rearrange your workspace to whatever works best for you. I would suggest trying that before you you abandoned it, but I see where you are coming from. I mostly wanted to use photos that people could quickly download and use to follow along with. I also shoot all my photos in RAW and I wanted to show that you can still use a JPG to get a good grade. Thanks for the comment!
@@MichaelSturgill That monobrow guy Piximperfect is a fiend for stock photos. I don't think he's seen a camera in his life! I sometimes use his method for matching contrast in a composite though. But seriously he comps a car into a scene using stock photos, there is cars right outside your house just go and take a picture of it! Full auto mode is fine!
