  • A friend of mine who came from across the big pond to visit Canada in 1997 and eventually moved here gave me these tapes of his trip from Edmonton to Vancouver on VIA rail.
Lets go back over 25 years to a time when a cab ride was still a possibility

The shot starting at about 7:00 is actually west of Edson, between Big Eddy and Bickerdike. Unfortunately the filmmaker missed the Big Eddy bridge and distinctive river bend south of the track. The yellow triangle sign at 7:08 is the mileboard to Bickerdike East. The road overpass is Highway 47. The old GTP station seen at 7:44 is right at Bickerdike, it was moved across the road and used as a house until being demolished in 2014.

Thank you Bob for the info. Yes the bridge over the Macleod river is a neat spot that was missed. I will pin this comment at the top.

Hey Tony , this is a great video. It reminds me of riding on the Canadian a couple of times. I really like the cab ride segment and hearing the crew chatting while looking at all the cool scenery. Poor old moose I hope he didn't suffer too long. The freight's were a good highlight including the string of boxcars at Swan Lake and the CN high-rail trucks also a pleasant treat to see. Awesome video Tony

Thanks, it’s just a shame that the video quality was so sub par back then. We are spoiled with GoPros and 4K at our disposal today. Heck, I have video on VHS from a camera I had in the late 80s that I still need to see if I can transfer.

I got to know the crewmen your friend rode with, when 1 and 2 stopped at Port Coquitlam, just east of Vancouver. Both great gents and I know one of them is still living up in Kamloops.

Thank you for the update on the crew, it was very generous of them to allow that cab ride

when in redwater i came down into town occasionally and train spotted by Edmonton yard. Stayed at Jasper opposite station and stayed up all night watching the freight.

That was great Tony. Too bad about the moose. I was wondering why sometimes the train would be on the left track, and other times on the right. Also, what were they doing with that manual switch ?

As far as the track is concerned, it doesn’t really matter. Just happens to be what RTC puts them on. From my understanding they were given permission to go through a red signal but in order to go over the switch, they have to disconnect the power, and then re-power it up once they’re on the switch. It a bit of a complicated conversation to have this way, but that’s the gist of it.
