If something happens to someone you know you often learn what happened without talking to them. For example if your dad was in a car accident you probably hear from your mom and the police. You dont have to wait for your dad to wake up in the hosptal.
I paddled out on a longboard in central Oregon 2 weeks ago. One other guy out there. I introduced myself by saying, “Your odds of getting attacked by a shark just got cut in half!”
Imagine having that feeling of a great white grabbing your arm with all those teeth and dragging you under water, I would definitely have nightmares about that and it’s a feeling you would never forget.
I surfed a spot called 's turns' on Maui once. It's a really long paddle to the sand bar, maybe 600 yards. Later that day i was told by some locals to never surf there if the water is cloudy because the bull sharks don't see well and it's dangerous. 6 months later, a local surfer, who surfed there every day was bit by a large tiger shark on the leg. Other surfers helped him get to shore, but the paddle is so long and he lost so much blood that he passed away on the beach before the ambulance arrived. It's really rare for sharks to attack people and they usually let the person go, but the blood loss from the bite can be fatal.

My buddy got bit on the ankle by a 5ft bull shark in puerto Vallarta and spent 3 days in a Mexican hospital.. 😅 he had to get skin graphs and 15 plus stitches to repair the damage.. he’s much better today but that incident still haunts him and he’s had a fear of sharks ever since.. he said he’d never swim in the ocean again.. understandably why 😅🦈🌊
Recently read about the deadliest shark attack on humans ever recorded, the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in World War two. There is a great book about what happened, called In Harm's Way by Doug Stanton. Un-fucking-real what happened to these men. Very well written too. Check it out if you're interested and can stomach the gruesome story. I could not put the book down.
God I used to surf every day as we grew up on the actual beach in Australia and I was surfing at 10 years old till 18. But I had at least 5 shark encounters and people have been eatin alive at my beach. Were I live has one of the longest beaches in the world. Great whites are in Australia like every other week. In the last 10 years there was a lot of dead surfers especially in western Australia.
Great white sharks can swim 4,000 feet deep. If they stayed there we wouldn’t even know they existed. They only come up to haunt and terrify humans and consume our nightmares.
The news here in Kona was that the surfer was convinced that the shark was a Great White but the other people on the scene said that it was a Black Tip Reef Shark 🦈 that had been acting aggressively, towards other 🏄♀️ surfers, for a week or so. This was also after heavy rains that wash quite a bit of material into the ocean 🌊 and make the water murky.
@@lavapix I was not there but like everyone in Kona I would venture their own guess. Only one time have I been in the water and had a shark 🦈 head directly at me. That was at Honaunau and I believe that it was a Galapagos shark. A Galapagos Shark can be 11 feet long and has a shape more like a Great White than a Black Tip Reef Shark. I had never heard of those sharks being in Hawaii but I got a good look at it and its behavior, plus its size and shape, made it seem like the most likely species. Another side note is during an Ironman week there was a man that was apparently killed by a shark when he entered the water after sunset to forage for something on the reef by Bubba Gumps. I was there when he got in the water. Locals were convinced that it was a shark attack but since the water was full of swimmers every day, who were working out the triathlon, the lack of absolute certainty was emphasized and the swimming continued in Kailua Bay the next morning.
@@kaijessen3654 It was weird the county never posted any shark warning signs anywhere. Must not have wanted to scare the tourists $$$. I've surfed with Laverne several times at the harbor lefts. She even swam a wave once.
Absolutely not a reef shark even though it's odd for a great white to be there. The shark pulled a grown man underwater and demolished his board in one bite. I had what was almost 100% a reef shark bump my foot when I was sitting out near Diamond Head years ago. It just rubbed up against the bottom of my foot and never came back. Of course I pulled my foot away so fast I fell in the water and tried not freak out as I got back on my board and laid on it with nothing in the water so it probably got spooked.
@@deckmonkey1459 I would have to agree that it wasn’t a Reef Shark🦈. The woman closest to the attack saw the shark swim under her so she would have the best description and from what I hear she was saying, it was longer than a Reef Shark. They are also slimmer than a Great White or my guess that it was a Galapagos Shark. Galapagos Shark could achieve the length that was observed and they are more like the shape of a Great White. They also will hunt in shallow water whereas that is not the typical m.o. of a Great White. I don’t know. Tiger Sharks have more distinctive markings so I tend to believe people when they have had an encounter with a Tiger. The ones that I have seen were when we flew over them in helicopters going to Kaho’olawe. The largest one we estimated at 14 feet in length. There are sharks here in Hawaii but I still would tell anyone visiting that fears them, it is more dangerous driving to the beach than it is to get in the water.
anyone who says it is less likely to be bit by a shark than hit by lightning has obviously been climbing to the top of tall trees in the middle of a corn field during thunderstorms. 🌩 ⚡️
putting a chance on it is so stupid some people never go swimming in sea . and some are in areas of no sharks or loads of sharks if yourre a surfer in east coast or haawaii i bet its actually quite high
Tens of millions of interactions between humans and sharks every year and very very few attacks. It’s extremely rare for a shark to attack people, even great whites.
"Compassion for animals is intimately connected with goodness of character and it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good (hu)man." ~ Arthur Schopenhauer, German Philosopher
I suppose then, by his standards, only vegans may be considered "good." However, he suffers from philosopher's disease, thinking his mammal brain dictates moral law.
My friends grandma got eaten whole and they only ever found the swim cap, my other friends brother got bitten in half and didn't make it, I'm from safrica tho
What most folks don’t understand about sharks is that almost all bites are exploratory, not predatory. Some smaller species may also bite out of territoriality, but it’s almost never out of hunger. We are simply not a natural prey item that they recognize, and there are documented cases of sharks much larger than a swimmer being afraid because humans are a foreign and unknown entity. Consider that sharks have no appendages with which to explore and manipulate their environment besides their mouths. Attacks are very rare, and when they do occur, there are usually deep lacerations but little flesh removed. If a predator the size of a great white or tiger shark actually wants to eat you there isn’t going to be a lot of you left to find. That is not to imply that sharks are harmless, or that a single bite cannot be fatal, but sharks are in actuality much less of a threat than movies and media outlets would lead you to believe. Attacks are newsworthy because they are infrequent, and most interactions resolve peacefully without swimmers even noticing a shark’s presence.
@@hospagalief absolutely! Predations can and do occur. I am just trying to convey that it’s not usually the motive. Sharks should absolutely be treated with caution and respect, but I often see them being made out as monsters online which is rather unfair and unproductive, especially with many species being increasingly imperiled by environmental issues.
@@hospagalief A good analogy might be black bears. They are usually not predatory towards humans, and spend most months eating insects and nuts. However, black bears are opportunistic predators that occasionally attack deer-sized prey such as humans with the intent to feed. Even so, most black bear attacks are defensive, with a mother protecting her cubs. It’s still grim if you are a victim, but understanding the difference informs how most people view the species. I’d wager that far more people encounter bears than sharks since we are terrestrial, but we lack the same degree of cultural terror. (Grizzlies, of course, are a different story).
Yeah wtf. Why did he get so uptight about semantics? Joe literally just used a more casual way of saying exactly that haha. That part was just weird lol
I used to spearfish near this spot. One time I had a reef shark go somewhat bezerk in front of me swimming back in forth in front of me, not looking too happy about me being in his spot. I backed up away from him until he was out of sight. Then I left the water. First time I’ve seen a reef shark get territorial. Prob 6’ long. They say you can charge them to show no fear. I didn’t feel like testing that theory that day. He did not look happy.

"It didn't suck him under! ..It PULLED him under.."
Thanks for that huge correction.. 🙄
We just had a fatal shark attack at the pit in Morro Bay, California. Crazy shit. 31 years old on Christmas Eve.
Dudes mate gets attacked by a shark. Telling everyone the detailed story.. Oh but I haven't spoken to him yet 🤣
I caught that too
If something happens to someone you know you often learn what happened without talking to them. For example if your dad was in a car accident you probably hear from your mom and the police. You dont have to wait for your dad to wake up in the hosptal.
Thanks for “showing” the video
My friend was incredibly lucky
No... the girl next to him who wasn't attacked was lucky
First spoken line of this video is so Joe Rogan-y it hurts, and I love the pain
Shane Dorian is a legend. Damn I wish Joe had Kelly or Kalani on. I've paddled into a 20 foot great white before, max 10 metres from my face.
Kelly’s been on before.
Or Garrett McNamara. He would be a good guest to have on.
I paddled out on a longboard in central Oregon 2 weeks ago.
One other guy out there.
I introduced myself by saying, “Your odds of getting attacked by a shark just got cut in half!”
Once dude gets out n well, Joe finna get him in the show to hear his perspective.
Joe Rogan saying "oh Jesus" had me ROLLING
You should watch a video by ‘sharks happen’ UA-cam channel titled
‘mistaken identity? Not so fast.’
Please watch it
Shane Dorian is a legend. Big wave surfing legend. He is the man! I looked up to him as a kid. Even have In God's Hand on DVD, lol.
Was so stoked to see Shane on the pod!! I also enjoy how intrigued Joe gets when he speaks to ppl like this, from a world he's not as privy to. I've been waiting on another episode like this.
that's right. absolutely true dude
One of the healthiest comment sections you'll find on UA-cam and the damn sex bots gotta come in a fuck it up lol
Best stories with the goat jr
No Junior, this dude makes Slade look like a kook
Fuck yeah Joe Rogan. Interviewing one of the gnarliest surfers ever. Good work Rogan.

Was so stoked to see Shane on the Pod!! Definitely gotta run over to Spotify later and check out the full episode. Love when Joe has on guests like this.
His buddy is gonna be sitting in the hospital watching a Joe Rogan UA-cam video talking about his shark attack that just happened.
Most shark attacks happen in shallow water.
No shit! Thats where all the people are!

I literally just watched a documentary about a girl with one arm (shark bite) who was a professional surfer , inspiring
Love how tight he has become with Shane
I’ve done water sports in Northern CA and I still get freaked out at what is lurking underneath. I know this incident was in hawaii but where he surfed Mavericks - is like Great white territory. Half moon Bay & Farallon Islands are breeding grounds. 🦈
That’s just a myth the surfers say to keep the lineup uncrowded. 😁
Sharks like to eat the butt and leg meat too, protect your assets
My buddy got bit on the ankle by a 5ft bull shark in puerto Vallarta and spent 3 days in a Mexican hospital.. 😅 he had to get skin graphs and 15 plus stitches to repair the damage.. he’s much better today but that incident still haunts him and he’s had a fear of sharks ever since.. he said he’d never swim in the ocean again.. understandably why 😅🦈🌊
The women who tied his arm with the cord is a hero
At Banyans!?! I've paddled through there so many times.
Did you get any bites while you were fishing?
Yes a great big one on my arm!
Almost funny.

Great to have Hawaiian surf legend Shane Dorian on JRE! Mahalo & Aloha!
Thanks!
Appreciate that brother
Wait till you find out how many sharks are killed by people
UNREAL
Just watch Jaws and listen to Quint tell the story of the Indianapolis. Robert Shaw was so good in that movie.
@@michaelsilvey560 well that’s great! That’s just great!
That girl saved his life with her leash
Never surf without a belt waiting onshore.
This most recent shark attack in Egypt is Wild af.
Ever since Joe moved to Spotify in exchange for his work, haven't seen or heard a full podcast
Joe you should have The Malibu Artist come on your podcast! You would love his channel and stories for sure!
Great white sharks can swim 4,000 feet deep. If they stayed there we wouldn’t even know they existed. They only come up to haunt and terrify humans and consume our nightmares.
And its only the babies that come up.
Dude is strong for that.
Sharks need to knock it off with their bullshit.
Yeah right? Like give it a rest already
Holy shit im praying for Shane's buddy
The news here in Kona was that the surfer was convinced that the shark was a Great White but the other people on the scene said that it was a Black Tip Reef Shark 🦈 that had been acting aggressively, towards other 🏄♀️ surfers, for a week or so. This was also after heavy rains that wash quite a bit of material into the ocean 🌊 and make the water murky.
It was certainly sharky that morning.
You have a higher percentage of getting eaten by lightning than getting struck by a great white dwarf.
THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN THE ROOM, IS THE ONE WHO SPEAKS THE TRUTH.. ARISTOTLE
Or the shark
I was working at KCH when this attack happened but not that shift.
anyone who says it is less likely to be bit by a shark than hit by lightning has obviously been climbing to the top of tall trees in the middle of a corn field during thunderstorms. 🌩 ⚡️
putting a chance on it is so stupid some people never go swimming in sea . and some are in areas of no sharks or loads of sharks if yourre a surfer in east coast or haawaii i bet its actually quite high
Nah it's less likely to bit by a shark when you're living in Utah. These guys are going into their space. Burger on a Styrofoam plate.

Tens of millions of interactions between humans and sharks every year and very very few attacks. It’s extremely rare for a shark to attack people, even great whites.
Shark was smelling that wizards sleeve
"Compassion for animals is intimately connected with goodness of character and it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good (hu)man." ~ Arthur Schopenhauer, German Philosopher
I suppose then, by his standards, only vegans may be considered "good." However, he suffers from philosopher's disease, thinking his mammal brain dictates moral law.

My friends grandma got eaten whole and they only ever found the swim cap, my other friends brother got bitten in half and didn't make it, I'm from safrica tho
Holy fuck
everytime i see ShaneO on a pod i get stoked specially with Joe
That last sentence pretty much covers it.
Not entirely true, definitely been great white predations where they actively try to eat all of someone
August, It’s also newsworthy not just because it’s rare, but because it’s so Gnar gnar .
And it made me look up to him.

“It didn’t suck him under! It bit him with his jaw and took him under”
Sooo he sucked him under lol
Can’t we just all agree that it sucked
Yeah wtf. Why did he get so uptight about semantics? Joe literally just used a more casual way of saying exactly that haha. That part was just weird lol
How about coral reef sharks? Are they aggressive?
I used to spearfish near this spot. One time I had a reef shark go somewhat bezerk in front of me swimming back in forth in front of me, not looking too happy about me being in his spot. I backed up away from him until he was out of sight. Then I left the water.
First time I’ve seen a reef shark get territorial.
Prob 6’ long.
They say you can charge them to show no fear. I didn’t feel like testing that theory that day. He did not look happy.
Man, Ill never understand why people try to fuck with sharks. People have learned to leave lions alone. Why isn't it conditioned to stay away from sharks?
