Guess that's not a very smart move to disclose their identity and personal life without knowing or demanding their consent as it can influence them not necessarily in a positive way, for instance Rafia seemed dubious about religious believes, existence of God and stuff like this (in another video, I watched) and she openly talked against prevailing traditions in the country, you know. The Pakistani girl's part instantly caught my attention and moved me.. she's so genuinely concerned and bright yet everyone misunderstood her. She was just ahead of her time.
I think the issue is a lot of them didn't realize how different her life was and what she was up against. They probably saw her as saying it like how we talk about misogyny in the West, which yes it's bad and real, but for her it was almost total oppression she was facing for women.
That seems to be a pattern throughout history, the majority follows the heard while the minority are ahead of their time but viewed as crazy. @@shilpashearthome8334 this video is from 1959 and things are much different now as compared to 1959, especially with the rise of feminist movements. Social media has also given a voice to the public.
She stated the situation of women in Pakistan because she began her statement with wanting to change the “situation in pakistan” in line with american standards, and she mentions how that’s not possible if you are a woman in pakistan. She clearly mentioned we need to change our culture and not to follow tradition. She took a huge dump on pakistani culture and tradition and you say she didnt talk about westernisation? What are you smoking?
“I dont believe following all our traditions set by our ancestors will do us any good… let us be realistic and search for todays truth rather than follow tradition for the sake of tradition.” She said all this because she wants to change pakistani standard to living to that of america, and she believes she can do it by convincing pakistanis to drop their tradition. The indian girls response was perfect because the american tradition is to super impose their own customs and way of living on a diversified earth. The beauty of this planet is that we are all different but the americans want to change it by imposing their way of living on everyone and they do this with help of massive armies, guns and missiles, this is a truly barbaric culture; in contrast pakistani culture was much more refined and civilised. We didn’t have a massive police or a judicial system but we still had no problems with crime in the initial stages of our nation and this truly reflects the rich and civilised culture we had. Now as we are changing to a barbaric and uncivilised american culture not only in pakistan but across the world we see people in pakistan changing too, to that of american norms and away from pakistani culture and the impacts of this change are clearly visible, rise in murders, rapes, cheating and fraud. All this is directly related to the selfish american culture and diverting from pakistani culture of humbleness and selflessness.

DelsMontgomery, the Majority did not misunderstood the Pakistani girl, only the Indian girl, Nalini, hopelessly misunderstood her. The Pakistani girls thoughts are very progressive. Pakistani society today is as Bigoted and Reactionary as it was in the 1950s, probably, even more so Now.

Super-amazed to see the views of these precocious young boys and girls. Their opinions, choice of words and knowledge that too in an age when there was no internet, mobile phones simply makes me wonder in amazement. Also, hats off to the great USA to host these bright foreign students , getting the best out of them and capturing these interactions in the video way back in 1959. Simply out of words. I’m not just impressed but also fallen in love with that Iranian girl Miriam.. wish I could see how she looks like now at 79.. if she is alive 😓 or may be I was her husband in my previous birth.. after that I reborn again now 😶🌫️
Now everything gets exchaned through social media. This time won't come back. But the fact is all those boys and girls were "selected" influential chaps from their respective counties.
Although I liked the arguments Nalini Nair from India made when she disagreed, I somehow felt that she misunderstood what the Pakistani girl was trying to say. The tinge of sadness and disappointment in her eyes as she spoke about how she can't do anything about the situation of women in Pakistan was heartbreaking.
In Indian teenagers still usually act as rebellion when it comes India and Pakistan. Since it is from 1959 only 12 years after partition, there must be some influence of patriotic feeling in Nalini for India and in rafia for Pakistan. Rafia was ahead of her time she was talking about women empowerment in her country but she seems very helpless. She was actually saying that only one person cannot bring chnage in society which is very true
Our people are our enemy.. like the one here that is you... Nalini was right is all aspects. Those who exploited, looted peaceful peaceful nothing less than barbarian
The Pakistani girl was absolutely spitting but no one understood just how rough of a time she was actually having trying to reconcile the differences between the way she has to live in Pakistan, vs the way she lived in America. My heart aches for her situation. She wants to be the change she wants to see in her country and in her people but she knows she can't be.
It's bad and dangerous and she was imo the least open minded. Any answer was "India great, west culture bad". I mean, if you're gonna be jingoistic and nationalistic and not be open minded and be so adamant then there's not much hope for India. History showed us this was true. You should be proud of your nation and culture but don't put down other cultures to elevate your own. Just speak what's good about your culture and nation.
@Sai Kaushal i do. a lot of people on the internet think there's just one 'indian accent'. truth is, based off of where you're from and how you grew up your accent is gonna be extremely different. what a lot of people glorify as an elegant indian accent is usually the product of growing up in an area where english is widely spoken (like bombay or goa) or of a quality education. the indians who get made fun of probably never treated english as a primary language and i think it's unfair (and downright racist) how people shit on bad indian english when the same bad grammar and broken sentences are sexy in a french or brazillian accent.
because most of you don't sound like this, if you did it wouldn't be "memed" to death. Just today I heard an Indian guy from India talking in my university. The accent was too much and really funny.
No. That was their ignorance and part stupidity because of lack of social media , education , information and communication. The victims of this include B.R.R.Ambedkar himself. United states was founded on genocide , racism , slavery , anti semitism , anti Catholicism, discrimination against hindus , Asians and so on. This year in 1959 , US was still under fascist Jim Crow laws that privileged white christians against others. No one had any rights. By this time , India already had a sucessful all inclusive democracy. 33% Americans still don't believe in science , vaccines , spherical earth , evolution and modern cosmology. They are bible thumpers. Even villagers in India have better common sense. US failed in Vietnam , Cuba , Iran and now in Afghanistan. Actually the Pakistani girl is thinking about the practicality of the outcome of this discussion, rather than taking something materialistic to her homeland or just gaining some knowledge from this discussion. Which I find very admirable considering her age.
The Pakistani girl was way ahead of her time, her problems got neglected.. it's not about rejection traditions and disrespecting our ancestors it's just about the CHOICE! the choice that was never given to women, men changed their traditions according to their comfort, for example wearing suits instead of dhoti (in most places) but women are still expected to wear saries, no one talks against it and the ones who do, only get suppressed why women themselves in name of tradition, culture, stereotypes and so much more.. Again it's not about rejecting tradition, it's about giving them the choice to choose their comfort and the way they want to follow their culture.
@Loco Guano it’s your choice to decide what you believe but it is based on ancient vedantic ideas. Since I’ve studied it I recognize the rhetoric she was going for. Even though they're using the same language people can interpret things in different ways. Like an engine in cars or machines, you buy two of the same kind, perform the same purpose, but you won't know if one is as efficient as the other.
I knew the kind of freedom she was talkin about; especially when it comes to women's freedom in South Asia.

@@TheGamingIndian lmaooo this aint discord 😭
@Sai Kaushal i do. a lot of people on the internet think there's just one 'indian accent'. truth is, based off of where you're from and how you grew up your accent is gonna be extremely different. what a lot of people glorify as an elegant indian accent is usually the product of growing up in an area where english is widely spoken (like bombay or goa) or of a quality education. the indians who get made fun of probably never treated english as a primary language and i think it's unfair (and downright racist) how people shit on bad indian english when the same bad grammar and broken sentences are sexy in a french or brazillian accent.

The girl from Pakistan @9:03 😔 I hope she was able to make a huge impact in her lifetime 😔
But then the girl after said she doesn’t agree about wanting to Westernize??? She’s changing the whole conversation altogether. One is being very specific about women’s rights in Pakistan and how powerless she feels as an individual 17 year old girl, while the other became culturally defensive for no good reason. You can be proud of your culture yet criticize it at the same time.
She is from islamic Pakistan......a far cry from India then and even a farther cry from India now. So, please don't make such tardy comments.
@@adityabose26 I’m making specific comments about their conversation with each other. You are responding by telling me how much better one country was/is over the other??? You sound a lot like the bright little girl from India…proud, defensive, and taking the conversation somewhere else. Again, we can be proud of our culture yet criticize it at the same time.
@@hobbessam8296 We Indians probably do it the most (criticizing oneself I mean)....and I say "We" because the "culture" you are talking about is predominantly a Hindu one (to which the Indian girl belongs) in which we are taught to be tolerant & self-effacing from the very childhood.
A trait which is rather uncommon in western societies and practically nonexistant in islamic societies like that of Pakistan.
So there you go.....I am not being defensive or taking the conversation elsewhere. The context is the principle common factor between the two responses. The status of women in islamic societies is nowhere close to that in the Hindu society (despite whatever media narratives you Americans have been fed with).
@@adityabose26 you are derailing the conversation, when all the Pakistani woman did was say how sorry she felt that she could not change how her society is, and was talking about women's rights, and the Indian woman made it about her blinding nationalism, even though nowhere did the Pakistani woman talk about westernizing her culture, she only talked about adopting the good aspects
And I don't even know what kind of tolerance you are talking about that we are taught since childhood
@@lol-px1um What nonsense. She(Indian) clearly says we should take the good and leave behind the bad from western nations. Western countries aren't the epitome of a perfect nation. With gun culture, higher divorce rates, teenagers not respecting parents etc doesn't need to be propagated in East culture.
These 17 year or so... old kids in 50s were far more matured than those today...all of them are so articulate and clear. Am in love with each one of them...
Very bright… I couldn’t help but smile ear to ear
Like wow!!
I love how confident and non-judgmental this is!
How wonderful it would be to be in something like this ❤
We lost innocence.. we lost dignity of languages (not a single abusive word).. we lost laughing faces without reasons.. we lost tolerance towards others.. Yes, we have developed a lot, we have bocome very fast and trying to become more faster.. but where to go? Think.. aren't we going backward?
Today people have lost the dignity and fall so low while discussing something. They try to force their opinions on others and if the opinions don't match they start name callings.
During debates they use slangs and try to insult others for having different information or opinions. No one can tolerate anyone nowadays. Even in my family this happens. Things were so different back then.
Personally i’m glad to be living in 2021 - If not, i would have never become an auto technician.
@SOIBOI69 Tiktok just became a thing 2 years ago. This type of behavior has been around for nearly 10 years by this point. It's the fault of social media overall.
People are still like this. In fact, it's fairly normal depending on where you live. Granted, it's not highlighted on social media, however, that doesn't say much.

I like how the teacher knows every single persons name!
My grandparents hosted a foreign exchange student from Japan and we still keep in touch with him. He’s in his 70’s now.
That's really amazing, I'm glad to hear it.
