Turkey was the third largest participant in the U.N. alliance during the Korea War. Turkey is a brother country to Korea, and 720 Turkish soldiers perished in the Korean War.
The Battle of Gunuri in North Korea was one of the fiercest battles, and there, Turkish soldiers demonstrated their bravery.
Second Lieutenant Suleyman Birbiley, who fought in the Korean War under the command of the U.N., is now 85 years old.
He took care of Korean War orphan "Ayla" for a year and a half at his barracks during the war, and 60 years later, he wishes to meet her.
However, the only leads he has are photos from back then and a Turkish name, Ayla. This program will introduce the story of Mr. Birbiley, a Korean War veteran, and Ayla, and by doing that, will shed new light on the truth about the Korean War and what the U.N. alliance meant to the war.

A man on his twenties in war and raising a child is unbelievable, now adays biological fathers don't do this to their children, that shows how man he was a kind hearted man. I couldn't stop crying
For real, such a beautiful and heart-warming story.
A warzone is hardly an ideal place to raise a child, but the fact that Suleyman and his friends managed to do it is very impressive. And I bet he never had any parenting experience before that. He was still so young himself.
Yes agree.. 😢
i think adopting orphans and taking care of them wherever they were stationed (they moved place to place and had to take the children with them sometimes) helped them mentally too. korean war was not just about shooting and bombing. especially in turkish vs chinese fronts there were many occassions they relied solely on bayonets and knives like in the ww i. they probably witnessed terrible things we can't dream of. keeping children relying on them probably assisted to keep their humanity intact and raised their morale in a fight thinking if they fall, children would do too.
Alot of the times why the bio dad's aren't around is because of drama from the mom.
"In Turkey we give cash to children. Look I brought American dollars..."
He got cash too for his 64 year old little child... 😢😢❤❤

This picture Ayla the orphaned girl kissing the soldier should won an Oscar -- a picture that captured the bond and love between 2 different people that lasted 60years .. such a an amazing story ❤
But the traslation is not 100% correkt. 25:29 He said here they've (North-korean/Chinese) killed her father and her mother. Some time ago, I was in Atlanta, GA for a business trip. When I arrived at the Airport, I took a taxi to get to my hotel. And the driver happened to be a Turkish gentleman. We started to talk and he found out that I'm a Korean American. He was so happy to give me the ride. We talked for the duration of the ride, and he offered to take me around the city for free. He just wanted to show me the kindness.
Knowing that the relationship between Turkey and Korea started 1,400 years ago, and that Turkish soldiers fought for Koreans during the Korean War, I cannot thank you folks enough. I bawled when I saw the movie lol
The most impressive and emotional real life story I have ever watched and heard in my life. And in a war. I bow respectfully to this brave and compassionate Turkish soldier. It is very impressive that they found each other again and hugged each other with the same love, even though 60 years have passed. It is impossible not to cry while watching all this. Suleyman is a real father with a big heart. In his eyes, Ayla is still his 5-year-old little daughter. And finally, love knows no barriers. Love has no language, color, race or religion. The most important thing in this life is to be human and remain human. I have infinite respect for the brave Turkish soldiers who fought and died for the freedom of Korea without expecting anything in return. With my respect and love to the Turkish and Korean people. Im a millenial but when I watched Empress Ki. I discovered that Turkish,Mongols and Koreans are related to eachother. For me they are the same. I see no difference between them.
B3rfinnn_ Easy, during tue Yuan Dynasty era, Mongols,Turks were already related to eachother and also they were both fighting against the Yuan Dynasty.. Goryeo a kingdom in Korea was once conquered by the Yuan..
@B3rfinnn_ Turks, Mongols and Koreans lived in a close geography.
I can't imagine the pain they went through when they were separated. It's like for her, she lost another parent again. I'm so happy they were able to be reunited. It was so sweet seeing them preparing gifts for each other. I was weeping like a baby man when they met again.
I'm 42 and other than my close relatives, don't really remember anyone I knew from when I was 5. So for Ayla to still remember Suleyman when she hasn't seen him from the time she was 6 until she was well over 60 is incredible.

That must be a crazy feeling. Being a grown 60 year old woman, with all your wisdom and experience. Then suddenly, you're a 5 year old little girl again holding on to your dad's arm.
She says he was the only father she had. It was the only time she remembered being loved.
Suleyman left quite an impression on Ayla, so of course, she would remember him well. I thought the part in the movie where he tried to sneak her out of Korea in a box was made up, but Ayla herself said it really did happen lol.
Very true, it's amazing that after all those years, they were like litte ones and like all of a sudden time has stopped and rewound to help bond and effection as if they were never seperated.. All with the help of Allah cc. becouse right at the beginning the intentions of the soldiers we call "niyet" was so pure for taking care of them bcouse islam pays massive importance on the care of orphans, so much so that it is ingraned in attitude in all of muslims. meanwhile thank you for your lovely comment.

You should know that the love and respect for Korea in Turkey is unconditional. Really i can say everyone loves or at least respect Korea, You can not find 1 person out of the 83 million who will hate korea. Maybe you can find people with no opinion, but not one with bad opinion. Korean people are much like us Turkish people, You are respectfull, honorfull, you care about your traditions, culture, you are gratefull and down to earth people. Not cocky at all. You love and respect your elderly, Not many nations has these characteristic, maybe this is also the reason why Turks feel bounded with Korea, maybe it is the blood what unite us, because if we go back in history, the Turkish homeland is the Altaic region, from modern day China up until Caucausus the entire north
I m from Turkey and living usa. Korean kids lost their father and mother their life at the Turkish base at that time still hurting our hearth . I appreciate our soldiers who cared those kids and share their food with them

i am crying while watching
It is very moving to watch this document already, but when you know the circumstances the Turkish soldiers were in, it's even more impressive that they were able to build an orphanage and these stories still happened. Turkey was still a poor country at that time and US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles at the time gave a speech to the senate saying Turkish soldiers would cost 23 cents a month, compared to $70 a month per US soldier. Even in such hardship this man and many alike took care of all those children because those kid had suffered the most during that war. A truly commendable story!
Thank you for the information.. but I found the secretary of state quite insulting.. 23 cents a month? Turks dont fight for money, they fight for honour and justice

As an adult man working on the ship, I couldn't hold back my tears. Thanks to those who found and shared this story with us, and to those who brought Ayla and Süleyman together.
I am South Korean. My head hurts because I cried so much. I couldn't see her anymore when she said to her granddaughter, "This is the country where grandfather lives." Please protect Ayla from the sky of Grandpa. I love you.

Ayla is daughter of all Turkey. And Korea will remain as our brother country. Love you 🇹🇷🇰🇷
Geez, the fact that he tried to put her in a box to take her with him. I am glad she remembers that and did not just feel he had abandoned her. Obviously it tore him up to leave her.
The movie in 2017 "Ayla the daughter of War" also put this moment to screen.. It was heartbreaking

One of the most beautiful movie I've ever watched, tears flowed while watching this show. This movie truly deserves recognition at the Oscars. I can't move on from their life story. Now I can prove that Turkish people are loving, contrary to what I used to think.

She really sobs like the little girl she once was in her fathers arms. 1 year and a half spent together and they never ever forgot. Crying this much... This is proof love has no boundaries of time or space. Very heart warming father and daughter never forget. i cried huhuhu
Yes because he was the only parent-figure in her life and where she experienced parental love for 1 1/2 years when she was 4-5 years old..... so sad. There were many orphans and kids separated during the war.
Yeah😭😭😭 she cried like a little baby girl.that miracle love make me cry hard..

I was adopted and raised by a Turkish family 40 years ago. I owe them a lot. Unfortunately the world media always expose the Turkish people differently then who they are! Visit Turkey and meet with these people you will see what I meant! They have huge heart for everyone without separate who you are. Loves and hugs from America.

My mother always told me that in Korean war Turkish helped a lot and they are considered as a brother country even they dont look like a typical "asian"(like Chinese or japanese) and when i was young I was amazed by that. Because of course I was too little to know that there are people outside of Korea who can be called as brother even they dont look like a korean😅.
And watching this make me cry 😭😢 and be thanked a lot to Turkish. Life is full of love and mysterious encounter.
So sad that they were reunited too late. Both of them tried to meet each other again. That part make me so sad. That she was too little and lack of information.

Ayla means "as bright as the moon" bringing light in to darkness
What a lovely name for sure
“Ay” is moon. When you add “la” (which equates to “with the”) to the end it means “with the moon”.
@@blythegraham8686 there is so many grammar in turkish language and la can have more meanings than 1.
no. this name doesn't means with the moon. *Ayla* means *moon halo*

In WW1 the British invaded Turkiye at Gallipoli. The Australians (AIF) and Turks suffered many casualties, yet there was a mutual respect. Each year Aussies travel to Gallipoli to remember this terrible battle. There is something uncommonly special about Turkish Soldiers that the AIF recognised at the time, as they are now at over 100 years later, still respected here in Australia.
