Last spring I installed a planter using PT spruce 6x6. Locally I paid $51 CAD per 12' stick. Mid summer I sourced unplained 6x6 12' cedar sticks at $23 CAD each direct from a small commercial mill employing 30 to 50ppl. The mill is about 20 miles from my city. They are producing raw cuts for the European market based in Atlantic Canada because of Canada's freetrade with UK and Europe. Btw they are a Texas owned company. For setting those 8" sticks (beams) I'd recommend using an SDS+ or MAX to push those in instead of pounding with a mull as it should push them without deformation!
As I watch this video we sit here on generator power watching it rain. I know you are under the same storm system. Smart on your invention to pull the joists...

So wishing you had got a dead blow hammer for driving those new joists into place. Then I saw you bust out the come along. Still gonna recommend a Deadblow hammer for the toolbox.
I would like to suggest now that when you frame the walls of the loft that you put a door from that to the attic. If you have that you will never use that pull down ladder.
Before you nail it you can just hit it from the side with some construction adhesive and still get a pretty good bit in there. When I was working for Roofer we watched a bunch of videos where they did the strength differences between glued and unglued roof sheeting. I love glue, you almost don’t even need nails or screws. It’s a huge pain and messy though. Lol. I didn’t catch the staggering issue. That definitely happens when you get tired. You’ll be fine though with all that cross bracing.
Woot! Fun fun, grab the saws all and get it on. 🙌🏼 Ugh. Sledgehammers gonna kill you, go get one of the good crowbars with a nail remover on the end I don’t get the cheap Harbor Freight ones because they bend it will save you a ton of headaches. :/ And I can tell you from experience fixing a poorly built floor in a 24 x 44 edition at my old house, don’t kill yourself trying to save every piece of cross bracing. If you cut it too short you can always throw some scrap in there and make it again and was 12 inches on center dressing the cross bracing isn’t nearly as important. It would be easy to drive yourself crazy trying to get the perfect spacing on every existing piece of cross bracing if it’s difficult especially if it’s next to a wall in a tight area, just whack out a big chunk get the truss in there and throw a new piece of blocking in in the old one being there is it gonna really hurt anything. It’s nice to have them all even but you’ve already got everything nailed in so you’re blocking is really just to keep the trusses from twisting it doesn’t really need to be in the exact same spot. If you put it all on the deck side of the house you’ll know where to nail by moving an inch and 3/4 over from where the other nails are. I know that will kill your OCD but I spent hours upon hours trying to get things perfect and get myself a ton of headaches in a little bit of grip and rip could’ve made that twice as easy. Lol. Seen enough videos to know that you’re going to do it perfectly anyway but I thought I’d throw that out there anyway. 😂😂 Keep the handsaw because you can use them all the time but salsa look at those little ends out pretty easily. Get a smaller one that’s not as heavy though. I’ve used a big huge powerful Milwaukee and just lifting it kills your arms after a while. Lol. Honestly it sits in a box and I never use it or use my $14 smaller Harbor Freight one. 😂 I would zip through there with the Skil saw and just get all the main cuts made then go through there with a saws all just knock out that last little bit. Even one of those oscillating saw’s might be easier. Lol. I wish I was your neighbor this stuff is so much fun to me. 😂😂
@@TKCL I wish I could, I always make everything 100 times harder than it needs to be and I know better but I guess I just have a weak brain and get the best of me. I can’t even build a workbench without making it strong enough to park a suburban on. Lol
After notching the blocking above the kitchen, why didn't you just push up the 2x8 straight up into the notched blocking, and then slide it over the three or so inches into place?
Keep in mind that the board was almost 5 inches longer than the clear span opening. With the osb nailed down, there was no way to put the board straight up. It would have been too short to sit over the center wall and over the exterior 2x6 wall top plates.
Really nice job, I have to be honest I have never seen them let some one butt the joist together like that. It may be a pole barn thing but if those outside walls fall out in a storm there is not much for the centers to rest on. up here we need to overlap at center ( load wall) by 24". Just curious? PS, look at Ryobi they make a job site fan that goes on top of a 5 gallon bucket with a mister just like your big fan.. You 3 stay safe, God bless.
@@TKCL , just never seen that before. Don't think they would let that pass up here in Ohio, like I said never seen before all the ones I have seen overlap. God bless stay safe.
I don't know where in Florida you are at, I'm in Port Charlotte and its not a bad storm here yet. I'm thinking maybe 30 to 35 mph winds but good and wet. I hope all is good for ya!
I might not have said it clearly, but that's what I am doing. Another layer of 1/2 inch glued and nailed to the existing. He understood that it would have been a nightmare to rip up what I have.
I commented before I finished the video. Not trying to come off like I'm telling u what to do....I know how some people can do that in these videos. They make a mold inhibiting spray you can spray out of an airless sprayer and coat all the wood. I do it on every house I build because of the humidity and moisture down here. Average house size I build is 3 stories and 10,000 sq. Ft. So they take about 8 months or so to get dried in. The spray works amazingly.
Oh that a great idea on the tool. 👌🏽... You better patented it lol... See I knew my OCD was also wigging out when I saw the OSB board pattern 🥺🥺🥺🥺 and it's still wigging out 🤫🤫 shhh I keep telling myself it's ok
You made those joist additions look much easier than I thought they would be! Really looking good! Will you be able to raise the cross support on the truss in your office any?
Enjoying your video, since you are still in the building stages and making some minor changes, have you thought about how you are going to run the heating and cooling system ductwork
We had a fully designed 1 1/2 story traditional home designed and a contract signed with a builder before this. Things went south quickly with covid, the banks, building materials and the overall cost of the build kept being changed. It didn't feel right so we canceled and decided to go this route. It was a small version of what we are building now, but way more custom.
I don’t see you using hearing protection. Do the wear buds work to Block it? I would be interested in that. Advice from my father, protect your hearing. You want to be able to BS with your friends when your old. Old farmer hearing is bad. PS I like your welder fold up table. Gonna have to add that to mine. Punch nailer is new to me…very cool.
Those ear buds make a huge difference and I feel safe using them with most loud tools. Something extremely loud like firearms, I'll still use traditional ear plugs or muffs.
Hey Andrew be nice to see a video when the storm and rain hits in Florida. Where exactly do you live in Florida. Planning to move to Florida in a few years. Nice work on your home.
Don't remember exactly, want to say 14'8". We were right on the edge of what's allowed for southern pine, 15'3 is max allowed before stepping up to the next size.

Keep the handsaw because you can use them all the time but salsa look at those little ends out pretty easily. Get a smaller one that’s not as heavy though. I’ve used a big huge powerful Milwaukee and just lifting it kills your arms after a while. Lol. Honestly it sits in a box and I never use it or use my $14 smaller Harbor Freight one. 😂
I would zip through there with the Skil saw and just get all the main cuts made then go through there with a saws all just knock out that last little bit. Even one of those oscillating saw’s might be easier. Lol. I wish I was your neighbor this stuff is so much fun to me. 😂😂
I'm getting better, I'm letting small things slide more than I use to.
@@TKCL I wish I could, I always make everything 100 times harder than it needs to be and I know better but I guess I just have a weak brain and get the best of me. I can’t even build a workbench without making it strong enough to park a suburban on. Lol
Are you all ready for all the rain comming your way from the hericane heading your way? Stay safe and hope don't blow away.
Worked on it all day, I'm beat!
Storm time soon! 🤠
Already pouring here!
Awesome little hook on invention you made. I was kinda hoping you would have hooked at least one up to the 4066 loader and pulled it through lol
Lol, I would have tore up more than I wanted to fix.
I did 24 inch plates on the other joists, I'm not done with these yet.
@@TKCL , just never seen that before. Don't think they would let that pass up here in Ohio, like I said never seen before all the ones I have seen overlap. God bless stay safe.
I think you should block 12 inches on center as well. ;)
Negative
I don't know where in Florida you are at, I'm in Port Charlotte and its not a bad storm here yet. I'm thinking maybe 30 to 35 mph winds but good and wet. I hope all is good for ya!
In the big bend, a little north of where it's supposed to make land fall. We should be ok
Just a thought here but ask your engineer if you could add either a other layer of 1/2 or even a layer of 3/4 t&g advantech on top instead.
I didn't take it as rude or anything like that. What is the name of the spray?
Well you found a system to get er done
Sure did
Oh that a great idea on the tool. 👌🏽... You better patented it lol... See I knew my OCD was also wigging out when I saw the OSB board pattern 🥺🥺🥺🥺 and it's still wigging out 🤫🤫 shhh I keep telling myself it's ok
Come on man, I was just getting over it 🙄
You made those joist additions look much easier than I thought they would be! Really looking good! Will you be able to raise the cross support on the truss in your office any?
Thank you, it went easier than I was thinking as well. I'm working a plan for that cross support, shouldn't be a problem.
See if vinegar would be better than bleach to get rid of mold. We allways use vinegar
I have some really strong vinegar too. Sounds like a good test
Enjoying your video, since you are still in the building stages and making some minor changes, have you thought about how you are going to run the heating and cooling system ductwork
I have, I'll explain that in an upcoming video.
What other to building a home besides the pole barn where you looking at?
We had a fully designed 1 1/2 story traditional home designed and a contract signed with a builder before this. Things went south quickly with covid, the banks, building materials and the overall cost of the build kept being changed. It didn't feel right so we canceled and decided to go this route. It was a small version of what we are building now, but way more custom.
@@TKCL is the cost of building a pole barn home that much of a savings?
In this case yes, the style, bulk materials and of course the labor I'm saving.
@@TKCL I'm glad it all worked out for you.. you made me realize that I could save a lot building my shop that way.. Thanks
North Central up near Tallahassee
@@TKCL stay safe and hopefully you won’t get much of a storm. 👍
Tear out suck for those of who are O.C.D. And over build stuff. I feel your pain.
Lol, it actually went easier than I was thinking it would. Thank God I didn't have to tear the blocking or OSB out.
@@TKCL your jig you made was a difference maker
Hand saw? While not bad to have on, err, hand, where is your multi-tool?
Great looking project. Wish the tools were red, but other than that, nail on
I do have one, the saw just felt like the right tool for the job.
What was your span of the floor joist?
Don't remember exactly, want to say 14'8". We were right on the edge of what's allowed for southern pine, 15'3 is max allowed before stepping up to the next size.
With all the rain you have been getting, you may of needed to built the house on stilts. 😁😊
No kidding! Wish I had a pond dug it would be full by now
Excellent video. Just out of curiosity why did you have to remove the end joist on the one side? House is looking excellent. 👌
To be able to slide the long joists in. Since flooring was already nailed down there was zero wiggle room. Straight in was the only option
@@TKCL Thank you for explaining. I have learned so much from watching you. I am a little behind on watching because this is the seventh day my Son has been in the Hospital with uncontrollable seizures. Watching your videos calms me down and takes my mind off of everything even if it is only for a few minutes. Thank you so much for what you do.
I am very sorry to hear that. I don't know if you are a spiritual man, but our thoughts and prayers are with your son. Glad the videos can be a distraction in such a time.
@@TKCL yes I am a Christian man. Thank you for your prayers. God bless you my brother in Christ
If you put soap on the end of the blocks you had to re cut they would have slipped through easier.
Or wax
How many total days do you estimate that it took you to frame the interior walls? I’m thinking about framing our house that we are building.
I honestly can't remember. I'm guessing 3-5 days on interior. Exterior was another story. The huge end walls, headers and hurricane strapping took a while.
@@TKCL thanks. Been watching the channel since the beginning. Keep up the great content. 👍🏻
What is that tool to punch out those nails.
It's called a punch sink nailer.
