When artists that recorded their songs could actually sing in real life.and sound just as good on stage. I may not be this old and have the privilege of saying that I miss those days but I can still say that I love this kind of music much more than music today.
The greatest decade in the history of recorded music gave us so many great bands. Everyone has their favorites and I'm sure that no one's list will have the same artists, just enjoy them all!!
True, of course, and your concilatory sentiments are splendid and heartwarming, but any list that has CSNY instead of CCR, the Jefferson Airplane (???) instead of The Band, and the Byrds (????) instead of Sly and the Family Stone, is just kind of ..... silly. (And/or click bait.) And if you're talking "rock acts" rather than "rock bands," obviously Bob Dylan and James Brown have to be here.
@@OnePost909Well, I guess over the last 50 year's, I've preferred "Click-Bait" LOL . Never liked / had an album by CCR, The Band or Sly. Would put Great Society over J A & NRPS instead of CSNY ... Is that 'Click-Bait' or "Musical Preference" ? LOL
With all the alternate bands being recommended, one thing should be apparent. Almost ANY band of the 1960s would blow the tats off everyone from the last 10 years . . .maybe longer.
Except that 60's musicians were not all tatted up like their younger counterparts of today. In the 60's, tats were fashionable for sailors, biker gangs and jailbirds period. Those were much groovier times. You never got a chick's clothes off and saw a huge fucking tat above her ass. Many cuties in their 20's are starting to regret those tats. Sorry Honey, not even a laser can remove them.
There was so much great music in the '60s that to choose the "best" bands you would have to divide it into categories -even starting in the mid-'60s, you have garage rock, British Invasion, psychedelic, Motown, mainstream pop (such as the Turtles, Mamas and the Papas, Grassroots)....what am I leaving out?
Mark Roberts you are right about the tattoos. Even though the hippies were all about freedom and resisting authority, they generally did not go for tattoos. But you left out bikers when you listed the groups that had them.

for some time the Animals seemed to be the band in GRIT CITY that we garage O G's wanted to be as tight as.Animals ON TOUR and John Steel rock or jazz drummer?
SO MANY from which to choose.....(it was the Greatest Time in Music!) Beatles Credence Clearwater Revival Eagles Crosby, Still, Nash and Young Beach Boys Cream BeeGees Mamas and Papas and the list goes on........
The 60's were rather divided between early 60's, classic 60's and '70's precursors, like Led Zeppelin. For the absolutely 60's experience, then my top 5 would be: 1) The Beatles well, obviously 2) The Kinks better than the stones in the '60's. 3) The Who Far more imagination than most groups 4) The Stones Some good stuff, but up and down. Hit their peak in the 70's. 5) Love An LA group that tends to get overlooked Bubbling under: The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Small Faces and Fairport Convention
If you are just talking about bands, excluding vocal groups, then my list would be:: 1. The Beatles 2. The Rolling Stones 3. The Beach Boys These are the only bands that had a major influence on music at the time and consistently put out hit songs, not just a few chart toppers, which is what made them great.
The Rolling Stones number one baby, after 53 years they still are rockin! I’m Woodstock generation and they have a lot of rock ‘n’ roll history about being to various gigs
Some interesting pics. There were so many good bands and soloists. With all the hype of Beatles and other “Superbands” so many others get lost in the crowd. Unusual Beatles choice.
Man the sound of LIVE music sure has improved, as well as the STUDIO. Good bands that made their mark and changed the music world as we know it today. My top five list of the 60's is about 50 bands long.
Interesting. Of all the many Lennon-McCartney, Harrison songs, the video shows The Beatles doing a Chuck Berry song. I'm 60 years old and feel blessed I grew up in the 60's with the Beatles and all the other great bands and music from that era.
Yes, though they covered many great songs it seemed odd for video to choose a cover instead of original. There are many videos of them performing their material live..
God, I love this! The Beatles were, hands down, #1. They towered over The 1960s like a colossus. In fact, they're above categorizing. Stones #2? Yep! Led Zeppelin and The Who would have to be in there too. America's own Beach Boys would round out the list for me. I saw The Beatles whole career and saw Paul McCartney in concert in 1990. To me, The Beatles were a force of nature. The Stones were THE quintessential rock band, the archetype. They were #1 after 1970. Peace ... FoJ.
Hard to argue about your list, except maybe the order. The last 3 for me: Who, Beach Boys, Led Zep. I still think of LZ as a 70's group. If so, then Kinks.
Beatles certainly top of the pile. Rolling Stones , The Who , The Yardbirds & Creedence Clearwater Revival who were American. Beach Boys were also up there and Original Fleetwood Mac
I am glad this site used Roll over Beethoven (Chuck Berry 1956) from the number 1 band because a lot of earlier "rock" bands especially from Europe were inspired by american blues....
So many great bands back then. And the music and lyrics that everyone could relate to. What the hell happened? Im getting old but this music never will.
Do you know who's the most successful American band of all time? The boys out on the west coast, The Beach Boys who are exceeded worldwide only by The Beatles and The Rolling Stone.
7) The Beatles 6) The Doors, 5) Jimi Hendrix Experience, 4) Procol Harum, 3) Blood, Sweat & Tears, 2) Terry Kath and Chicago 1) Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention
my personal top 7 - in this order! btw , for what it's worth, I have earned a living as a full time pro musician for 40 years now, and I did not have rich parents.
Kudos for mentioning Zappa, Blood Sweat & Tears, and Chicago, along with the others. I respect anyone who can make a living as a musician in today's world, especially. My best friend from high school is sill struggling as a talented guitar player. I was in his garage band in the 70's.
The Moody Blues were much bigger and more relevant than J Airplane. The Moody Blues affected all the music of the period. Even the Beatles went off after the Blues! The albums were hits from start to finish. They were remarkable achievements!
This should read "My favourite 5 bands of the 1960s". The best bands of the 1960s, if define in terms of popularity/record sales/body of work/legacy/influence etc..., are clearly the Beatles, Stones and probably The Who, The Kinks, and the Beach Boys
Norman Smith Well if you are describing "Top bands" as opposed to "My favourite bands" then there has to be some criteria if want any level of objectvity. Record sales and number of number ones is at least measurable.
Yea, I understand what you're saying, kaiserbill. You're right, you need some criteria for "top" band. The Beetles were on top. Personally, not "my favorite band." Just something struck me when I read your comment, something about the relationship to sales and top bands who presumably play the best music. In my view, the best music puts a band on "top." But, as you imply, that's a very personal thing. I guess I am just not into bands being "commercialized" by sales. So, to label a band by sales rubs me differently, even though you're right about having some metric.
@@RoobieRhoo To be fair, Kaiserbill only included sales as one of at LEAST five significant criteria (see the 'etc..' at the end of his list) for identifying the 'best' bands/ music. If sales were the only criterion, obviously that would be completely inadequate and quite possibly misleading. You have to look at the whole thing. On the other hand, since there was such a plethora of extraordinary bands/ music in the 60s, it was a highly competitive field, and bands therefore really did have to be good to make any major/sustained impact in the charts. So in that era, I would argue that sales would be a relatively good criteria.. In contrast, nowadays relatively forgettable rubbish can attract huge sales just because there's really nothing much else in the way of great talent around, to compete, plus marketing is so much slicker now than it ever was in the 60s. I think I'd agree with you that it's therefore a reasonable argument that sales WOULD be an unreliable measure of the 'best' in music, currently. :-)
Peter & Gordon the Brits.i admire I heard one.died last yrs rest n peace.you two stays too your self.never hear nothing.terrible.about artists never met you at all.good singers.
Wayne Danberry dont forget Deep Purple, Graceful Death, Iron Butterfly, Steppen Wolf, Cream, Grand Funk Railroad, Ten Years After, The Hollies, Procol Harum, Lovin Spoonful; Dave Dee,Dozy,Beaky,Mick & Tich; Faces, The Pretty Things, Manfred Mann, Black Sabbath, Jimmy Hendrix Experience, and so on.
The DC5 get hardly much respect these days even though they were belatedly elected to the RRHOF which says alot more about the Hall than it does the group. Mike Smith passed away just prior to the band's selection. Mike was one of the very best vocalists of the 60's and he always looked so cool pounding away on his Vox Continental.
Everyone has their own list, of course. Mine would be: 1. The Beatles 2. The Rolling Stones 3. The Band 4. The Allman Brothers 5. The Beach Boys I know the Allman Brothers didn't come into our consciousness until 1969, but they're in my Top 5 anyway. If you'd asked me this 40 years ago, I probably wouldn't have included The Band, but as the years passed, I learned to appreciate their musicianship, and their songs weren't dated like so many others. They moved way up my list since the 60's. Guess I was a little slow to 'get' them. They only did a couple singles, but dig into their music and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Nice for The Band to get some love here. I was also a big Mountain fan back then. Felix Papalardi, a great Bassist, was also a great Studio mixer, and wasn't sufficiently credited by Cream.
Beach Boys, Paul Revere& The Raiders, Association, Cowsills, Dave Clark 5,Who, The Animals , Tommy James & the Shondells, the Hollies, Gary Puckett& the Union Gap, Gerry&,the Pacemakers, the Searchers, Bee-Gees the Zombies, Dino , Desi&Billy, Four Seasons, You forgot to include them on your list.
Willie Bowen you have great taste what a kickass list of bands back when radio played music not this crap there playing today used to listen to WABX 99.5 FM and W4. 106 FM in Detroit Michigan do you remember a band called The Frost if check them out look for Rock and Roll music and Mystery Man stay the course Bruce
The Beatles were called on when the world's first satellite network became operational and they wanted a PR event. John Lennon responded with "All You Need Is Love." It doesn't matter what keyboard warriors think 50 years later, at the time, the network people knew who to turn to. "Hard Day's Night" was written like that, after a request. I think that a band is pretty good when they can produce - on demand - material like that.
For me the five greatest rock bands of the 60s were (1) the Beatles (2) the Rolling Stones with Brian Jones (3 The Beatles (4) the Rolling Stones with Brian Jones (5) the Beatles. Pieto
My best are 1) led Zeppelin...2)the Rolling Stones..3) the Beatles...4) Jefferson airplane...5) the animals...6) Black sabbath...7) King Crimson...8) the Byrds...9) AC/DC...10) the Who
1. The Beatles 2. The Rolling Stones 3. Pink Floyd 4. The Doors 5. The Troggs 6. The Mamas&the Papas 7. Jefferson Airplane 8. The Kinks 9. The Cream 10. Creedence Clearwater Revival
These aren't the top 5. Dude seriously where are The Doors? The Who? The Jimi Hendrix Experience? Ten Years After? the Yardbirds? I mean those are the most influential bands of all times, without them rock would never be roll
Daniel, great thinking. Hendrix, 10 Years After and Yardbirds definitely deserve consideration. Morrison's lyrics were amazing, but the music a little simplistic.
1. The Beatles (objectively there is no competition) 2. Buffalo Springfield (Young, Stills, Messina, Furay in one band) 3. The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds, California Girls, Good Vibrations, I Get Around ... You need more?) 4. Jefferson Airplane (The quality of their song writing and recordings, in light of the amount of drugs they consumed may be the greatest achievement of mid-20th Century music) 5. The Doors / CCR The Rolling Stones would make the list if 1970-71 were in the 60s ...
The five greatest rock bands of the 60s were: (1) the Beatles, (2) the Beatles, (3) the Beatles, (4) the Beatles, (5) the Beatles. I might have these in the wrong order.
JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, CSN&Y(but 'down by the river' was recorded by NEIL YOUNG alone), THE BYRDS, THE ROLLING STONES and THE BEATLES..what do you want more? ;)
Depends on how you define "classic rock." Let's assume this disqualifies Motown and Muscle Shoals. In that case, my top 5 are Beatles, Stones, Credence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin, Eagles. You might also consider Fleetwood Mac in there. Also, a lot of people consider the '60s to stretch from 1963-74 rather than 1960-70.
Thank you for your answer about my question. I must say that I love many other bands like The Who, Dave Dee, The Hollies etc, etc. But what I mean is that for me, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones were the first bands we listen to and for us as 14 years old boys they were for us something very special. Thanks again.
Well, not typical Beatles in some ways, and the sound was off, it's true, but George was absolutely killing that Chuck Berry number, no doubt about it. Great to see/hear.
The Beatles , The Rolling Stones, The Supremes (and other Motown groups), Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel set the musical soundtrack for the Sixties. Other groups like The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Cream, Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green) and The Who were constants throughout that era as well. Particular songs like Albatross (Fleetwood Mac), Are you going to San Francisco (Scott McKenzie), Baby Love (Supremes), Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harum), Mr Tambourine Man (The Byrds), Shes Not There (The Zombies) and Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) always seemed to be playing on a radio somewhere.
Bands from the 60s had it Tough in the 80s. Pink Floyd broke up in the 80s (but got back together and broke up) The Rolling Stones broke up (but got back together) And for the Beatles, John Lennon died in the 80s
I don't necessarily agree with every band - or song you chose (picking just the five best 60''s songs is basically impossible) but nonetheless, I thank you for featuring George Harrison in the #1 spot - as he was always my fault Beatle. Good job.

true I love older music it just has a sound to it that modern music doesn't have.

for some time the Animals seemed to be the band in GRIT CITY that we garage O G's wanted to be as tight as.Animals ON TOUR and John Steel rock or jazz drummer?
SO MANY from which to choose.....(it was the Greatest Time in Music!)
Beatles
Credence Clearwater Revival
Eagles
Crosby, Still, Nash and Young
Beach Boys
Cream
BeeGees
Mamas and Papas
and the list goes on........
1. The beatles. 2. The Stones. 3. The kinks. 4. The Byrds. 5. Creedence Clearwater revival.
The 60's were rather divided between early 60's, classic 60's and '70's precursors, like Led Zeppelin.
For the absolutely 60's experience, then my top 5 would be:
1) The Beatles well, obviously
2) The Kinks better than the stones in the '60's.
3) The Who Far more imagination than most groups
4) The Stones Some good stuff, but up and down. Hit their peak in the 70's.
5) Love An LA group that tends to get overlooked
Bubbling under: The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Small Faces and Fairport Convention
If you are just talking about bands, excluding vocal groups, then my list would be::
1. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. The Beach Boys
These are the only bands that had a major influence on music at the time and consistently put out hit songs, not just a few chart toppers, which is what made them great.
I would just add the doors and that's a good list
That's the way I hear it. Although if you're going for influential as you said, Hendrix is a must. I'm conflicted about that last one
The Rolling Stones number one baby, after 53 years they still are rockin! I’m Woodstock generation and they have a lot of rock ‘n’ roll history about being to various gigs
1- The Beatles
2- The Rolling Stones
3- The Yardbirds
4- Creedence
5- The Doors

Some interesting pics.
There were so many good bands and soloists.
With all the hype of Beatles and other “Superbands” so many others get lost in the crowd.
Unusual Beatles choice.
1 - the beatles
2 - the rolling stones
3 - the yardbirds
4 - the who
5 - the doors
Man the sound of LIVE music sure has improved, as well as the STUDIO. Good bands that made their mark and changed the music world as we know it today. My top five list of the 60's is about 50 bands long.
Interesting. Of all the many Lennon-McCartney, Harrison songs, the video shows The Beatles doing a Chuck Berry song. I'm 60 years old and feel blessed I grew up in the 60's with the Beatles and all the other great bands and music from that era.
rocnradar Yeah with George in the lead no less. Why not one of their own compositions?
Yes, though they covered many great songs it seemed odd for video to choose a cover instead of original. There are many videos of them performing their material live..
But lets be honest Harrisons songs were the best
I'm 69. I'm more blessed that you are. :)
Obviously an American selection, to show the Beatles in their early days to try to pass them off as an average blues band.
My rock and roll band of all times
1- Creedence Clearwater Revival
2- Beatles
3- Rolling Stones
4- Pink Floid
5- Led Zeppelin
You're sick in the head
5. Cream
4. The beach boys
3. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
2. The Rolling Stones
1. The Beatles
Dick Head better CCR instead of Beach Boys
Beatles certainly top of the pile. Rolling Stones , The Who , The Yardbirds & Creedence Clearwater Revival who were American. Beach Boys were also up there and Original Fleetwood Mac
Tony Craddock!
The New Yardbirds...
Hollies und Kinks vergessen!!!!!
1- The Beatles
2- (None-Void-Empty)
3- Rolling Stones
4- Small Faces
5- The Who
Don't forget THE DAVE CLARK FIVE (DC5)
+Eduardo Pretell .
Eduardo Pretel
Oh, I think I get it. The Beatles are second to none?
1. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. The Who
4. The Isley Brothers
5. The Holies
.....
Hollies
The Hollies Stop Stop Stop one of there best tunes stay the course Bruce
Beatles , Animals, Stones, and they all owe The Three Chord Wizard CHUCK BERRY!
The Beatles are truly AMAZING!!! :)
Roger Martin : Doing that time period you are so right.
FAB 4 NEVER WROTE A BAD SONG
✌✌✌✌✌🎸🎸🎸🥁💜❤💜✌
They never once came close to repeating themselves either, which is remarkable considering their vast body of work.
Do you know who's the most successful American band of all time? The boys out on the west coast, The Beach Boys who are exceeded worldwide only by The Beatles and The Rolling Stone.
As much as the Eagles are overplayed, they did outsell the Beach boys, albums for sure.
www.riaa.com/gold-platinum/?tab_active=awards_by_artist#search_section
I was in his garage band in the 70's.
ignorecorporatenews OK
I like this list. My first concert I attended was BS&T. Loved Zappa's Hot Rats, especially
1.Creedence Clearwater Revival
2.The Beatles
3.Led Zeppelin
4.The Doors
5.The Rolling Stones
The Moody Blues were much bigger and more relevant than J Airplane. The Moody Blues affected all the music of the period. Even the Beatles went off after the Blues! The albums were hits from start to finish. They were remarkable achievements!
This should read "My favourite 5 bands of the 1960s".
The best bands of the 1960s, if define in terms of popularity/record sales/body of work/legacy/influence etc..., are clearly the Beatles, Stones and probably The Who, The Kinks, and the Beach Boys
I dunno, I do not define good music in terms of sales.
+Norman Smith best music? how about Love, ?
Nada se compara a The Beatles. Simplesmente sobrenatural!
I will NEVER forget the most memorable thing Grace Slick ever said; Heroine is God's way of tellin' Ya that ya got too much fuckin' money!!!!
Very wise words from Grace--thx for the reminder.
Peter & Gordon the Brits.i admire I heard one.died last yrs rest n peace.you two stays too your self.never hear nothing.terrible.about artists never met you at all.good singers.
Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Animals, The Who, The Small Faces are coolest bands of The 60's.
Станислав Матвиенко good choices, probably the coolest bands of all time!
Good Taste bro, Cream was a Power house.
Beatles,Animals.Kinks,Byrds,Stones !
miss the moody blues
Play Doc Watson
We had so much music. We had so much more
I would add The Kinks, The Dave Clark 5,and The Animals!
Yep the other 3 heavy's from the 1st round of the British Invasion! The other 2 of course The Beatles and the Stones. The Who were about a year later.
Wayne Danberry dont forget Deep Purple, Graceful Death, Iron Butterfly, Steppen Wolf, Cream, Grand Funk Railroad, Ten Years After, The Hollies, Procol Harum, Lovin Spoonful; Dave Dee,Dozy,Beaky,Mick & Tich; Faces, The Pretty Things, Manfred Mann, Black Sabbath, Jimmy Hendrix Experience, and so on.
Those three great????
The DC5 get hardly much respect these days even though they were belatedly elected to the RRHOF which says alot more about the Hall than it does the group. Mike Smith passed away just prior to the band's selection. Mike was one of the very best vocalists of the 60's and he always looked so cool pounding away on his Vox Continental.
@@forastero4ever *Grateful Dead, *Steppenwolfe. Dave Dee & Co. were fun.
Everyone has their own list, of course. Mine would be:
1. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. The Band
4. The Allman Brothers
5. The Beach Boys
I know the Allman Brothers didn't come into our consciousness until 1969, but they're in my Top 5 anyway.
Felix Papalardi, a great Bassist, was also a great Studio mixer, and wasn't sufficiently credited by Cream.
each one of us has his favorite band; to me it's THE DOORS
5 Small Faces
4 The Kinks
3The Who
2 The Rolling Stones
1The Beatles
you selection was good but this would be my choice
Willie....I love your choices!
Quite a diverse list but ... Dino, Desi & Billy?
Pieto
+Steve Smith Lol i had no idea this was such an issue

People might have subjective opinions, but the objective fact is that The Beatles were and are the greatest ever !
It’s all arbitrary , of coarse, but my list would’ve included The Doors, Cream and the Jimi. Hendrix Experience.
1. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Pink Floyd
4. The Doors
5. The Troggs
6. The Mamas&the Papas
7. Jefferson Airplane

1) Hendrix 2)The Beatles 3) The Rolling Stones 4) Moody Blues 5) Cream + 6) The Animals
The Beatles 1forever
Beatles didn't need colour they had their voices!!!!
These aren't the top 5. Dude seriously where are The Doors? The Who? The Jimi Hendrix Experience? Ten Years After? the Yardbirds? I mean those are the most influential bands of all times, without them rock would never be roll
Daniel Andre you left out the Kinks.
Finally. Someone besides me knows who a Ten Years After are.
Daniel, great thinking. Hendrix, 10 Years After and Yardbirds definitely deserve consideration. Morrison's lyrics were amazing, but the music a little simplistic.
@@OmniGuy The only "Lees" most people know are named Tommy or Geddy. They're missing Alvin, among the greatest.
0:01 sorry that you can’t read🤷🏼♂️
1. The Beatles (objectively there is no competition)
2. Buffalo Springfield (Young, Stills, Messina, Furay in one band)
3. The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds, California Girls, Good Vibrations, I Get Around ... You need more?)
4. Jefferson Airplane (The quality of their song writing and recordings, in light of the amount of drugs they consumed may be the greatest achievement of mid-20th Century music)
5. The Doors / CCR
The Rolling Stones would make the list if 1970-71 were in the 60s ...
The five greatest rock bands of the 60s were: (1) the Beatles, (2) the Beatles, (3) the Beatles, (4) the Beatles, (5) the Beatles. I might have these in the wrong order.
Dale Thornberry That's So Funny! And So True!
Dale Thornberry Ha! Ha!

1 The Beatles
2 The Bee Gees
3 Creedence Clearwater Revival
4 The Kinks
5 Led Zeppelin
Depends on how you define "classic rock." Let's assume this disqualifies Motown and Muscle Shoals. In that case, my top 5 are Beatles, Stones, Credence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin, Eagles. You might also consider Fleetwood Mac in there. Also, a lot of people consider the '60s to stretch from 1963-74 rather than 1960-70.
The Eagles? Wrong decade, unless you think the 60s lasted until about 1978.
I like all of these groups they were all different but Awsome !
1) The Rolling Stones
2) The Beatles
3) Creedence
4) Ten Years After

Another year for Ten Years After. Most underrated band of all time.
Jesus, Number one and you couldn't find a better video?
You could'nt get the right grooves on his rocord
Well, not typical Beatles in some ways, and the sound was off, it's true, but George was absolutely killing that Chuck Berry number, no doubt about it. Great to see/hear.
My top five are the following 1 Neil Young 2Santana 3 Cream 4 Beach Boys 5 Beatles ☆
1. The Beatles
2. Cream
3. Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac
4. The Who
5. Taste
Great Grace Slick!!!! All the great group of 60´s
Pink Floyd broke up in the 80s (but got back together and broke up)
The Rolling Stones broke up (but got back together)
And for the Beatles, John Lennon died in the 80s
There is two class "A" groups in the sixties : The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
For those who keep listing Led Zeppelin, they formed in the very late 60s and we're more known as a 70s band
I don't necessarily agree with every band - or song you chose (picking just the five best 60''s songs is basically
impossible) but nonetheless, I thank you for featuring George Harrison in the #1 spot - as he was always my fault Beatle.
Good job.
My top 3 bands the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Animals. No other bands could top those 3.
