What a Thrilling movie~The theatrical aspects of this film are amazing ~I am very grateful to for sharing these fantastic movies that perhaps we might have never seen otherwise 💕🌻
Amazing film! Thanks so very much for posting it. It is amazing how many unknown films -- had they been directed by well-known directors -- would have been labelled classics. I still cannot get over the fact that Herbert Lom managed to portray two brothers with such sensitivity that they really do seem like two different people; and I also cannot get over the technical skill of the camera men to pull this one off. The music is perfect!
Thanks. I agree with you. Compare the trapeze scene in this film with similar scenes in the very able director Carol Reed's film"Trapeze", filmed in glitzy colour with Lancaster ,Lollobrigidaand Curtis. I find the trapeze scene in "Dual alibi" much more threatening, sombre and dramatic effective in black and white. Must be the combined effects of music and handling of camera in this very low budget movie. Proof of craftsman ship on all fronts.
An interesting and enjoyable film. Herbert Lom plays the identical twin brothers with convincing style. He should have become a bigger star in his later career.
Great movie. Should be a film noir classic. Herbert Lom is one of my favorite actors from this era, and has as much charisma and screen presence as Peter Lorre, etc. Thanks, enjoyed it.
Quelle prestation remarquable ! Un excellent comédien dans ce rôle de jumeaux . Voilà ce que j'appelle un vrai Artiste ! Thank you Monsieur Herbert Lom ! Bravo, bravo, bravo !🌠✨ Now, you are a star for enternity in our hearts !💖
Born Herbert Charles Angelo Kuchačevič ze Schluderpacheru. 11 September 1917. Prague, Kingdom of Bohemia, Austria-Hungary Died 27 September 2012 (aged 95). Camden, London, England
Thanks so much for this one and can't wait to check the others on your channel! Very good description too - love discussing older films and anything surrounding the who, what, when and how of them!
Thanks for the posting and the civilized exchange about the quality. Instead of complaining like some, you offered assistance. Millie the Pug approves. Herbert Lom is one of my favorites, so handsome when young and so funny in The Pink Panther! I love discovering "new" old films, since it sometimes seems that I've watched all of them before!
Very compelling and entertaining film with wonderful performance(s) from Herbert Lom. And isn't Phyllis Dixey good? What a tragic fate awaited her... Very clever direction and special effects, and what a pace!
By 1947 the tastes of the London audience had changed, and Phyllis Dixey was forced to return to the provinces. She was not able to adapt to the direction that the public required; leaving the stage in the late 1950s, bankrupt. In the early 1960s she worked as a cook at Loseley Park near Guildford. She died of cancer in 1964, aged 50, in Epsom, Surrey, and was buried in Epsom Cemetery.
Scamming in the 21st century. Scamming in 1947. There is surely no great difference. Always be vigilant & never trust too easily. An interesting & compelling performance by Herbert Lom. Many thanks for the upload 👍.
Great Black and white film (Dual Alibi )i saw it as a boy and I’m 70 now it put me in bed hiding under the bed sheets with my teddy! for me it was scary Mary! and very powerful great Actor ! in the Lady Killers, (The human Jungle) and of course the persecuted inspector with Peter Sellers! only found out he died in 2012 today at 95 really sad loss! Bless!
Phyllis Dixey (Penny) was known as the Queen of Striptease during the war. Only made two films, grew older and was working as a cook at the time of her death.
Such a nifty little thriller, the type Britain put out consistently in that era. And there was certainly much more to Herbert Lom than his buffoon character in the Pink Panther films.
Phyllis Dixey was a quite famous singer stage performer, though perhaps best known for her "Peek-a-Boo Follies". She did one other film that I am aware of (LOVE UP THE POLE, 1936) . Her life was portrayed for British tv in THE ONE & ONLY PHYLLIS DIXEY (1978), portrayed by Lesley-Anne Down. Terence Arthur De Marney was a famous British stage /film /radio actor who also wrote a play (WANTED FOR MURDER ,made into the film A VOICE IN THE NIGHT). He appeared opposite Bela Lugosi in THE MYSTERY OF THE MARIE CELESTE (1935) and Boris Karloff in DIE, MONSTER, DIE ! (1965). Sadly he died after an accidental fall in front of a train in the London Underground ,1971 .
The film has got a copyright notice which means that it is not possible to watch the film in German speaking countries. I have no idea the reason for this but I suspect that the music score in the film (very thrillingly made by Stanley Black) might be implicated. I don't think there is any copyright at all existing of the actual film. But in the crazy world of copyright law although more than 50 years has passed since screening of the film (which would render any existing copyright not applicable according to Berne convention) there is also a provision that authorship of the film (the director, screen play or composer) could be protected 70 years after their death if they had the copyright I assume. In this case the director (Travers) stopped making films after 1968 and astonishingly there is no date of death of him but according to his DOB he should be 111 years old by now! I think there is an obscure copyright claim of a part of the actual musical score that might be the reason for the copyright claim of the film. I doubt that the copyright claim company can really have copy right of the actual film .However I dare not, at the moment, appeal the copyright claim decision because if I were to lose, I might get a copyright take down on my account ,which would force me to take down this film and potentially threaten my channel. I am not sure if persons from the German speaking countries can read comments about this film although they cannot watch the actual film but there are ways around this. If they click on this site free-classic-movies.com/movies-04/04-1947-06-03-Dual-Alibi/index.php they would find the film freely available on that site. This is a web site specifically made for public domain films or films with "orphan" copyrights i.e. non existing copyrights. They could also download corresponding updated English subtitles for the film www.opensubtitles.org/en/subtitles/6961916/dual-alibi-en
Many complaints about the sound. I guess they do not stream the film to their TV. There is seldom an issue with sound when streaming from a devise to TVs.
Because of a previous copyright notice this film cannot be seen in German speaking countries. Very difficult to understand as the film is clearly in Public Domain on arch org for everybody to see archive.org/details/DualAlibi. I have also added Spanish subtitles as an option in CC .
Thanks for uploading, but do you suppose you could remove the UA-cam "stabilize" enhancement from this video or re-upload without the enhancement? In its current "enhanced" state, the image often "swims" around-suddenly moving, zooming or panning unpredictably-which is very distracting and disorienting and makes the unwatchable. You might get more views! :)
Looking forward to seeing it. A while ago, when I first tried the stabilization feature I noticed how it disturbs the picture in order to do what it does. For me the stabilizing wasn't apparent enough to compensate for the very noticeable "loopy" result. Just to make sure, I re-uploaded the original file and deleted the enhanced file -- voila, solved.
I appreciate that you mentioned this problem because I didn't know why some vids would "swim". Though some of my favs did this, I'm such a die-hard classic fan, esp Brit one, that I just would watch these "swimmers" anyway! Lol!
"Apart from this, I have not seen any more films by Alfred Travers, who seems to be a totally forgotten director. Astonishingly, hardly anything seems to be known about his life and career (apart from the titles of the films he directed)..." Make up your mind, Seglora, did Travers direct other films or not?
As I stated in my introduction, he directed other films and according to IMDb in total 16 films between 1933 and 1968.His last films were done in South Africa. He was known in his earlier years by the name of Alfred Jungermann, indicating that he was of German origin and most likely fled to England before World war II. The amazing thing is that nothing is known about him since 1968 and not even his date of death.
Lom was unable to obtain an American visa, due to political reasons & I think due to not being able to work in Hollywood, hurt him becoming a bigger star.
Very interesting film. Some of the captioned subtitles are so incorrect as to be comical though! i.e.: "quite an original act!" turns into "quite a regional act!"
If you are an Anglo Saxon and not hard of hearing you have the privilege to switch off the CC. The subtitles has not been made by a professional (as there is no one ever made for this film)

Enjoyable film without coming near 'classic status'. Some gaps in the plotline that have not been adequately plugged. SPOILER ALERT TO FOLLOW!!! The lottery ticket thread needed more careful planning and working out. It happened too quickly.
The sound of it being a CIRCUS makes me sick, sorry I tried but being an animal advocate for so long I c just can't the animal cruelty captivity slavery. Don't want to watch or hear that lion. Can't continue.
Virtue signal much? How do you feel about the 19,000 Children who starve to death EVERY DAY. You animal rights bozos make me sick. Don't get me wrong, I like animas, ... especially Beef.
The great Herbert Lom. I hope others remember these movies and not just his Pink Panther role. Thanks for this one!
He was a wonderful star!
Herbert Lom, I watched many of his moves..he’s entertaining. With this one I only caught on to it now. He lived to a good old age of 95
Wow! Herbert Lom is magnificent.
And he was extremely beautiful.
Excellent film. Don't know how fast British studios were cranking them out, but it is always good to find a gem like this among them.
Extraordinary film. Really enjoyed it and will be viewing it again … and again.
I remember this film when I was a kid. Awesome film.
My great grandad was the trapeze artist
What a Thrilling movie~The theatrical aspects of this film are amazing ~I am very grateful to for sharing these fantastic movies that perhaps we might have never seen otherwise 💕🌻
Enjoyed an excellent film. Thanks from India
You are welcome.Agree.Very enjoyable film and easy to oversee it's a bad copy of the film, the only copy left as far as I know.

I remember watching this film when i was a kid always stayed with me now in my 65 ish very nostalgic thanks for uploading
Brilliant film. Worth watching.
Excellent movie. THANKS
Herbert Lom resembled Charles Boyer. Excellent actor, later played the frustrated Chief Inspector in a couple of Peter Sellers 'Pink Panther movies.
An interesting and enjoyable film. Herbert Lom plays the identical twin brothers with convincing style. He should have become a bigger star in his later career.
Intriguing film. Outstandingly entertaining. Good ones like this are very few these days.
Great movie. Should be a film noir classic. Herbert Lom is one of my favorite actors from this era, and has as much charisma and screen presence as Peter Lorre, etc. Thanks, enjoyed it.

Lom ! Bravo, bravo, bravo !🌠✨ Now, you are a star for enternity in our hearts !💖
Herbert Lom was such a great actor... just mesmerizing. Too bad he's so underappreciated. He was also really great in "The Ladykillers."

Thank you for the movie
Great synopsis!
Herbert Lom gave me the creeps as a kid, and now that I'm 67-years old, he still gives me the creeps! Good actor.
Wonderful, thanks.
Superb film, really enjoyed the plot. Thanks for posting.

I have been watching old movies on UA-cam all morning and now its 7pm Sunday night. So many GREAT movies and this is one also! wow
Very compelling and entertaining film with wonderful performance(s) from Herbert Lom. And isn't Phyllis Dixey good? What a tragic fate awaited her...

It was Lom's strangeness that was his strength, could play oddball's with elegance and style.
I've got a public domain copy of ebay its just about ok , wish someone would bring a proper cleaned up version out ,one of my favourite films
Herbert Lom at his best ! Great movie thanks for upload.

54:23 If I hadn't seen his name in the opening credits, I don't think I would've recognized Sebastian Cabot here.
Herbert Lom was great, Terence De Marney's character got what he deserved.
Nice piece of early cinema trickery.
Excellent!
LOVED IT !!! SUPERB !!!

I can't get that waltz music in a minor key out of my brain.
My mum used to say Oooohhh Herbert Los,😂😂👏👏🇬🇧
First thing to air in 1954 on NBC Chicago.
I know that's extremely specific but it's just a random fun fact.
Herbert Lom, chief Inspector Drefus of "Pink Panther"... Interesting concept...

no wonder he went on to try to kill peter sellers so many times...

Sebastian Cabot, Mr. French from the T.V. show "Family Affair".
I thought when Mike signed for the registered letter, that was going to be proof he knew about the winning ticket.
I liked it ✔✔💯💯

Loved Human Jungle one of my favourite series from the sixties loved the music and its my ring tone on my phone lol
aahronheim An excellent point!! Thank you for your VALUABLE advice.
54:12 Is that Sebastian Cabot?
Yes,you're right
Thank you. I think that's the youngest I've ever seen him. Quite a few years before Family Affair.

WHY no scenario, anyone ??
Title isn't sufficient to disclose content. 😔
How about Dead Ringers? It was used but not for another four decades.
Subtitled, so unwatchable as far as I am concerned.
With one click you can switch them off
@@seglora7219 or switch you off ! I agree with the critic. This film sucks and blows!

bravo¡¡¡¡
This may help, info for Alfred Travers: Alternate Names: Alfred Jungermann
Thanks for the comment.Even with his original name it is impossible to find his date of death.
Counsel for the defence is George Couloris
Several of the barely wrong captions are hilarious.

A lot of British classics with poor sound quality, really a shame, don't you think?
Can you tell us what the movie is about?
money is the root of all evil
The search for family.
According to Wikipedia the director is 112 years old......
Pretty Good Movie,,, It's Not "Casablanca",,,, But It Was Fun,,,,
👍☺
plot holes. they never made an attempt to discover how the ticket was forged/stolen/cashed.
Lom is too close to being like Charles Boyer
I just posted the exact thing,
Enjoyable film without coming near 'classic status'. Some gaps in the plotline that have not been adequately plugged. SPOILER ALERT TO FOLLOW!!!
The lottery ticket thread needed more careful planning and working out. It happened too quickly.
Stool lullaby was more like it. This movie stunk me to sleep.
aka: Doubles Get Double Crossed
I would have done the same thing to that thief, but not in front of 200 witnesses.
Tragic
£100 a week seems a huge amount to me
Not much for risking your life and your brother's every night...................quite cheap, really.
I enjoyed it without all the whining.
This movie broke my heart & actually made me sick - always a woman to destroy faith - Greed the great destroyer
TOO QUIET TO WATCH.
