Should you balance the "Rotating Assembly" for your engine? My thoughts on it.

  • Just going over a few points on engine balancing. If ya need it or not and what can happen either way.

    Hi Sam being a son of a machinist tool maker before cnc's balance between enteric and external balance is like grumpy Jenkins and the majority. Watchmakers and clockwinders huge differences. I remember weighted cranks and cams with offset buttons Ect. Ect.,fraternity to share for those who still appreciate TDC! My dad passed 7/30/24 my copilot will be sorely missed . Rock On !

      @@robertangell7926 Sorry for your lose man. That's gotta sting. My dad is locked in to a battle with multiple cancers right now, so it's been riding pretty heavy on my mind. He's a old school gearhead/ drag racer from way back. Fucking time don't stop for anyone. Years seem to fly by anymore.

    Thanks for the balancing information I will definitely balance my high performance engine but I'm not worried about my truck engines that don't turn much over 5500. They've always did good with the stock balance.

      That’s still balanced all engines are balanced or they would rip themselves apart. The more balanced the longer it’ll last. My old man used to laugh when people would say blueprint and balanced cause that’s just part of building an engine to an old master like him.

      @@Thumper68 LIke I said my trucks with the "stock balance" run fine that's different than a high performance balance so what's your point? It doesn't take an "old master" to figure out an engine needs to be balanced.

    l like how someone knew the proper way to add weight on the 496 crank. The one thing my friend was most proud of when he built my engine was the fact it was balanced to zero.

      Yep, always put the Mallory in the side of the counterweight. My guy been balancing racing engines since the 60s. Also pulling trucks and drag boats, oval track cars and Sprint cars etc. He's been around. Plus he's a drag racer since the early 60s, he's won class at Indy US Nationals in Superstock back in the 80s and still races a hardcore tube chassis Top Sportsman type 57 Chevy and a tube chassis 67 Chevy 2 Nova Super Gas car. Both fast as hell. His walls are covered with old photos of his drag cars going back to about 1960. He's had a bunch. Probably 75+yrs old. His 50yr old son races too and works with him. The old man drives a Super cool 57 Chevy hotrod to work. It's a 70s style hotrod.

    I wish I knew of your shop back in 2017. I would have got you to build me a motor instead of ordering a new crate motor from GM. (redline 5800 so I'm OK)
    The only reason I took that route is because I didn't trust anyone I talked to and don't have the confidence, patience or detailed knowledge it requires .
    Interesting video as always..Always learn something here.
    Your living room won't make it on the cover of "Home Decor" magazine but I think it's cool AF. Even the old model cars. I still have mine too.

      Thanks man. I have a couple thousand model cars tucked away actually. Still have them from my youth and now I'm old. Also have thousands of old Hot Wheels cars and bunches of other car related shit. Most is boxed up and stored away. Also have around 20,000 car magazines and tech manuals etc. Fills up a small out building. Been a collector of hotrod related shit my entire life. Can't quit. Also collect engines and parts.

      I'm gathering parts now to build a 358ci SBC that's gonna make well over 600+hp NA and turn 8500rpm. And it'll stay together doing it. Using BRC custom pistons, BRC aluminum rods, and a Reath 44lb crank. Be over 14-1 compression with hogged out DART heads. 272/282@.050, 690/660 lift solid roller cam. 1050 Dominator on a ported DART intake. Should run low 10s high 9s in the 1/4 NA. Probably get tested in my 84 Z-28 Street/Strip car. It's around 2600lbs and well set up to run. It's been a hotrod for a long time.

      @@derekscarrsr2688 I like it when the higher rpm ya turn the engine, the smoother it gets. My daily driver 355 is smoother at 7000+rpm than it is at 3000rpm.

    What do you think about that coating that Eagle has that one can order a crank with that makes the oil not stick to the crank? Makes the crank really shiny too. I suppose there is no real way to keep the oil off the crank but that would help it shed of very quickly.
    Do you get a quantity discount for sending in 3 cranks at once to balance? If not you should.😎👍

      Those coatings can't hurt. Windage trays and crank scrapers help too. Yep, ole dude gives me a discount. I'm a pretty regular customer. Fixin to drop 3 more rotating assembly's off. He does all kinds of crank work too. Offset grind, index, cross drill, chamfer oil holes, knife edge, lighten, etc. He's a master at crank prep. Pretty reasonable too. Old school machinist. Builds serious engines too for drag racing and truck pulling.

      We used to get the crank journals hard chromed. Turned down to 2 inch rod journals. Knife edge & lighten. Use small journal aluminum rods with 7/16 bolts. BME rods were my favorite. Hard to find anyone that can chrome a crank now. Use lightest pistons available. Could put a 5/8 end wrench on the end of the crank and turn the shortblock over with one finger. Ran all the clearances on the extreme loose end of the tolerances. Low tension 1/16 1/16 3/16 rings with gas ported pistons. Lots of wall clearance, usually around .007 or so. Had to run a serious oil pump & big pan to get any real oil pressure tho. But those type engines revved to the moon. I used some bored out either .060 or .125 over 283s, a couple original GM 302s and a few 327s and many early 350s. I like engines that can rev. Blows people's minds doing burnouts and shit on the street and they look over at the tach and it's past 8000+rpm. And the sound they make.... Hard to duplicate that shit. I shifted a 302 I built years ago at 9600-9800rpm. Id shift at 9500rpm, but by the time I made the shift it was at 9800rpm or so. 7000 stall and 6-17 gear, it was wide open instantly. Car weighed around 2200lbs. Loud as hell. Started life as a 68 MO 302. Built a 64 327 with a Holley tunnelram & twin 660 Holley center squirt carbs, huge 288@.050 solid roller, Canfeld 210cc heads heavily ported, it tached 8500rpm like it wasent shit. Those are the kind of engines I grew up around. And a whole lot of bigblock Chevys too.

      That hard chrome is a mofo to grind, especially on an OD!😳 But afterwards it's tough to beat the durability. They're coming close with the modern heat treatment processes they have today though. Great insurance especially when running a flat tappet cam if debris runs through the engine.😎👍

    Did the conversation on the 427 and your talking over 5 pounds that’s a lot. I mean all you need to do is imagine a washer that has too many pairs of Levi’s on one side. Don’t sound or look very good as it’s spinning. Now apply that to a motor that’s spinning around at 6 7 8000 rpm.
