"Low Buck" 500+hp 357ci SBC ready to thump. 1990 L-98 350.
Spent the evening getting this 1990 L-98 5.7 SBC ready to run on my engine dolly. Using 1.75 dia turbo headers on this one to fire up. Using 1 7/8 primary, 3 1/2 collector long tubes in car. Engine came from a totalled 1990 Camaro Z-28. Should make more than double the original power rating and then some. 357ci SBC factory roller block, 1 piece seal.

If you want to run a pair of turbos on an SBC, twin 7875s might be a little big, they support 800-1000hp at the crank each, GT3582s will spool up pretty quick and support a 1000-1200hp as a pair, GT45s might be a good idea as a pair for 1200-1400hp. I can't imagine being able to really use that kind of power in something, especially on the street with rwd. It takes a lot of transmission, driveline and traction to run like that in a reasonably light car. I could see an open spaces highway pull or land speed car using that kind of power. The turbo V8 game is crazy, I saw a kid was running high 7s in 1/4 with an SN95 Mustang that had a single turbo 4.8L on E85 through a high stall TH400. Anyway, love your stuff as always.

@@hendo337 I have a collection of Turbos too. Ain't decided which units are going on what. Also building a twin turbo bigblock. I have GT35s and GT45s also. And T70s. Nothing carved in stone yet, gotta get the vehicle capable of 1000+hp first. Ain't gonna be a street car either, going small tire no Prep drag racing. Might use a big single, I'll figure it all out when I start bolting it together. I'm sure there will be a lot of experimentation till I'm satisfied. Been collecting all this turbo shit for years now. Got into the Buick GNs back in the 90s with the turbo V6s, but now I want to build a bigblock version and a SBC. I have a 96 Ranger with a turbo 2.3 in it, single GT35. Probably gonna put the shit in a 95 Blazer sitting in my backyard. And the 3rd gen Camaro gonna get one of them. Might just go with a single S480 on a bigblock in the Camaro. I'll figure it out as I go. Something to do. I'm looking for a deal on a used aftermarket SBC block, a Rodeck would be nice. Settle for a DART tho. Even those Speedmaster blocks are pretty solid. Seen a few over 1500+hp without failure. But then again, the Grubworm Camaro had a production LT1 block around 2000hp. I have one of those and it don't appear any thicker than many of my other blocks. I think dude was going thru them pretty often tho. But damn, I never would have thought they could handle that much power. Of course much work done to them, but the block is still GM iron. I'm aiming for 1000-1200hp with the SBC, 1500+with the bigblock. These will be drag race only vehicles. Going to run alcohol on both.

@@hendo337 Of course built T-400 transmissions will be the go to units for these. I'm aware of what it takes to run that much power in a vehicle. I study this shit daily for decades. That's why the turbo engine isn't in a vehicle yet, because I got to make the car hold up. I'm getting it tho, slowly but surely. Shits expensive these days. Remember, I'm old, not a young guy just starting my first project. Most of my videos I'm tired as hell plus stoned as shit and just thinking out loud. Figuring out what I want to do. Have too many projects tho. Currently building 20 engines. Have 40+more to do after those are done. This is my retirement after working in the automotive industry for nearly 40yrs. Beats sitting around waiting to die playing with phones I guess. I'm sure I'll die long before I finish all my projects tho. I'm a realist. Also have medical problems I try to ignore.

At first I was thinking 364 cubes, could it be he built a sbc 307 stroker?🤔 A .060" over bore with an aftermarket sbc 383 crank or a sbc 400 crank. Little did I suspect that it was a sbc 350 with that much over bore.😳 Makes me think of the '68 - '74 sbc 307 and 350 blocks were supposedly cast with the same patterns. Did they make both of those blocks thick enough to over bore an extra .125"? I was under the assumption that the 307 could be bored from 3.875" to a 4.00" bore because the water jackets to inner cylinder bores were the same size and that they just bored the 350 out more. If that's the case then a 307 block should be thick enough to go to 4.090" like the one you have? I now do not think that is the case?🤔 They must of made the patterns the same by making the two blocks cylinder walls the same thickness? So in theory if that block can go to a .090" over bore it might even be able to go to a .125" over bore and you can use sbc 400 pistons! That would be awesome because the main webbing in the sbc 350s is far superior than the sbc 400s are.😎 Have you ever sonic tested the wall thickness of that block? You just might want to build a sbc 400 with it if in it is thick enough? If in it is maybe you might not want to risk one of those "pink" rods breaking at that power and RPM level? After all they're not much better than the standard sbc connecting rods. Back in the day the only way to tell them apart was the dot of pink paint on them.🤷 Very cool sbc collection thanks for the tour.😎👍

Most I've ever bored a 350 was .090, but I have heard of people boring them .125 over will a full fill of Hard Bloc. Using the early blocks tho. The 68-72 350s are the thickest. This block was sonic checked many years ago when I worked in a shop with a sonic tester. It was unusually thick. I've bored at least 10 283s .125 over. Used to be the thing to do. Never seen a problem with it. I never messed with 307s, they were considered boat anchors back in the day. But of course they can be built. I preferred 302s, 327s, and 350s. Built a few 400s years ago, but they were more prone to problems. Didn't like drilling steam holes in heads for them. Had more head gasket problems with them too. I've had a couple rowdy 600+hp 400s back in the day. Most of the blocks were thin past 73-74. Couldn't bore them much past .030 over. They ran hotter too. The perfect SBC was the 327. I've put them thru hell few other production based engines could survive. Don't see many blown up 327s. I built a radical 68 MO 302 bored .060, ran 6.30s in the 8th, swapped a rowdy 406 in it and ran 6.10s. Went from a 7000 stall & 6-17 gear to a 5000 stall and 4-88 gear. Turned the 302 up 9500+rpm, the 406 went 7400-7600rpm. The 406 ended up blowing up. The 302 still lives to this day in a buddies gasser 57 Chevy drag car. I built it 35yrs ago or better. Runs high 6s in that 57. Those high rpm small cube SBCs are the shit. That 302 made around 2hp per cube. Built a few radical 292s and 288s from 283s also. Modified Production class type engines. Gotta turn em up tho. Music to my ears. Little bastards are loud. Most people building those small cube SBCs build them mild and never see the true potential. The old Modified class cars were pounds per cube depending on designation, so a light car with a small cube engine was better than a heavy car with a bigblock. A 292ci SBC with a 288/296@.050 solid roller with 14.5-1 compression is a beast. Too bad NHRA pulled the plug on that class in 1982. IHRA went with the Modifieds & Super Modified classes till the later 80s. Those were real hotrods. Them type engines took a lot of work. Valvesprings didn't last long either back then. Worked on them fuckers constantly. Bottom ends were bulletproof, but the valvetrain had a hard time keeping up. I usually used aluminum rods & killer pistons in those type engines. And of course forged cranks. Some production based, some aftermarket. Moldex and Velasco both made killer forged lightweight cranks. Price of shit these days is insane tho. Makes it difficult.
