2023 Gold Award Recipient: Sofia Martinez, Fostering Youth's Self Esteem And Confidence

Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada Gold Award Recipient, Sofia Martinez! Sofia’s project is called “Beyond the Attic Boutique: Formal and Special Occasion Wear.” Her project addresses foster youth’s need to look and feel great to help their self-esteem and confidence. The lack of wardrobe accessibility to help foster youth present themselves well becomes an even major challenge during prom season. Sofia partnered with the Department of Family Services, Peggy’s Attic, and Bishop Gorman High School to Peggy’s Attic collect prom dresses. Before her project, the category of “formal and special occasion wear” was non-existent. Sofia went on to create a physical and inviting space within Peggy’s Attic for Clark County foster youth to select from without the need to disclose their foster care status to agencies outside the foster care system, which can decrease their self-esteem.
