@rubyretro sorry if this has been asked already, but where did you get your info about the "maple bar confrontational" card? I haven't been able to dig up even a single reference to it anywhere.
The series actually gave me an idea for my homies for an rpg they're loving. I linked these videos and said it inspired something akin to toy story plus inside out. "Imagine if Andy collected Warhammer" it's kitbashed pokemon with the card game types and some staus conditions and you just vomit d20 rolls against them. But what makes the game interesting for them, is that being the cards/figures themselves, their world is shaped by "the meta" and I played tenacious d the metal whenever I mentioned the meta lol Like imagine you were a pokemon card and you hear rumors devs are thinking of making fairy a type. You're a cleffa and you're wondering how you changing from a fairy from a normal is gonna hurt or help you, you might even disagree with other cleffa about if this is a good or bad thing. Same goes for attack types which are just a variety of names status conditions. "We already have seven, why do we need eight?!" Because for most, it's just a generic slap errata of new type/condition, generic saving throw table of 11+ on a d20... But when types are merging or defecting that's not so easy to do and it can give you an existential crisis. Like you'd think just rolling dice vs a number criteria wouldn't be so detailed and full of heated arguments, but turns out people wanna win and you'll never be Goku of rock paper scissors when there's like 20 different versions of rock paper scissors, nor can you account for bad rolls.
I also appreciate seeing more creators featured. I love the PTCG but it certainly doesn't get nearly as much love as others on here and with the sad state WOTC has made MTG into these days, Pokemon content is such a breath of fresh air.
@@keatonkuuuunHolon Phantom has some of the best retro pokemon content on the tube. Def check him out ! Different meta/brew retro decks pitted against each other while he provides the play by play commentary in high production videos. Awesome having him on. I too came from mtg. I played highly competitive modern for over 10 years, dipped out once they announced modern horizons 2. I hated them forcing rotation in what essentially was a non rotating format. Power creep was out of control and since they don’t have formats that are capped off. I found my joy in cardgames with retro pokemon again. So far I find base Fossil the most fun. Due to the variety in viable pokemon (essentially : the trainer cards are so good that you can pretty much play any pokemon you like as long as it is supported by the right cards. I prefer having it this way, then be forced to specific pokemon like cleffa or Sneasel. But that’s just preference.) I myself built Raindance, Do the wave, Venucenter and my own Gengar brew so far. I’m loving it. I wish more people like Ruby, Phantom etc existed. Retro pokemon is really good once you dig deeper.
Phenomenal job again, team. Always so grateful to have my name show up on these fantastically produced videos. Folks, Aaron and Nick put their hearts and souls into these videos, and I do my best to provide solid music for them. I know they have every desire to produce videos more frequently, but the time they each put into every video is exorbitantly high (it shows), and they’ve both got full-time jobs demanding a ton of their attention. I look forward to the day the channel grows into the behemoth I believe it can be; Aaron and Nick’s vision for this channel is great, and I know if you stick around and keep supporting, you’ll see greater and greater videos all the time. This channel is nothing without every one of you; you all make the channel what it is with your love and generosity. Thank you all for your comments and for taking your precious time to watch our channel.
That moment when I have to be patient for your videos but I’m glad you’re taking your time to make high quality content. I know being a creator is real hard work, so I hope you always remember to rest. Thank you for doing what you!
I missed some of your videos (and I haven't seen this yet), but thanks a lot for your professional work. Is very informative but the most important thing is the type of research you do, reconstructing a story that can be lost.
I just found this channel yesterday and now I've watched all episodes of this series. What a fantastic idea and the way the information is presented is amazing!
I loved that part too, gave us a snippet of their personality & before Ruby had even suggested to go sub to them, I had opened their links from the bio and done so already! It's great to find new channels to watch .
I've gotten back into collecting recently, and Base through Neo was the era I was most active in. I'm glad there are creatives like you who make content on past formats, as it helps fuel ideas for decks I want to make.
I founs your series around the time i began collecting bulk base-fossil cards to play with friends, this series has been fun to listen to while theory crafting about deck builds. Thanks for this bud.
I posted this in the last Neo meta video but I have so many fond memories of San Diego STS. Like a team rocket cosplay duo doing the motto in Japanese on the side stage. The only physical memory I have is a picture of me and my friends at the time with the giant pikachu mascot that was walking around. Really loved this era of the tcg
Ah wonderful! Always waiting for a new episode. The old commercials give nice touch alongside the fact based review of what actually happened Keep up the good job Ruby Retro! ❤
I remember this is when I initially stopped battling. In Alabama, at the time, there were very few tournaments. Years prior from 97’-2000’ we would hold mini tournaments at the local “Books-a-million” store. When wizards made that decision to cancel 15+ division, our local bookstore also stopped…and there weren’t many older people willing to play anymore…it was sad times bro😂
I get so excited every time I see you upload another chapter of these videos! So fascinating! I’m so excited for when you reach the ex ruby sapphire/sandstorm era
I think i speak for everyone when i say that i hope the technical difficulties era of this channel has finally come to an end. Excellent video as always.
We are hopeful that we're finally past that era. At the very least, we finally identified and squashed the one persistent issue, and haven't yet ran into any other issues.
Jimmy Ballard I believe is still the owner of a few card games stores around the Chicago area called Top Cut Comics. I bet you could get in contact and get that missing decklist
Wow, yet another amazing video!! :D Thanks for all of your hard work with researching everything, as always! I especially loved seeing all of the photos from the event. Thanks so much to everybody who contributed!! I had no idea that the electroflip device existed. The kids at my Pokemon League would definitely benefit from something like that haha!
I live in Japan and here the retro format is still popular thanks to fans who regularly organize tournaments! Some cards can be very expensive so we are allowed to use proxy as long as we ask before entering a tournament. We have a discord with around 150 active players and it’s so cool to see the retro format getting recognition and love from the community!
Another fantastic video as always!!!! I really love the neo genesis generation of cards. It was really cool seeing the featured guests in this one ^_^ happy you guys passed 17k subs!!! Good stuff!! 👏🏻 ^_^
I have absolutely no interest in picking the TCG back up, and havent played since the GBC title, and yet these videos fascinate me. You detail events historically, and accurately, but still manage to add in a dramatic flair so it's still a story. Well done indeed.

Hi Ruby!!! Your work is amazing! I was there in San Diego in December 2001... I played for team Switzerland, i have some picture of the event... I'll be glad to contact you 👍🏻
