If you get a message from an account that looks like us telling you you've won a prize, please ignore it and report the comment for spam. I'm trying to keep up with them, but it's time-consuming, and I may miss some. If we ever do any kind of contest, it will be clearly outlined in a video.
@20:26 theres some controversy with the 15+ top 8 Marcus Abreu vs William Lieu first round match up, Marcus Faced and beat William by deck out during the qualying rounds and other notable players like Scott gearherd pointed out that during the play in first round he played a lass, and he didnt play that during his match against marcus. Top 8 had deck list BUT the qualifying rounds did not.
I'm so tired of these bot accounts bro they're everywhere.
1:38
Bro the whole tournament thing in a giant boat with a golden invitation sounds like something straight up from Yugioh, it's so cool.
I'd say it was Pokémon the first movie, but not having boats was an early plot point.
Marcus here - it was a fun tournament and being one of only a handful of Canadians it was super awesome to go on that run. In the swiss I actually won my matches with William.
That must have been so surreal to experience. I'm glad we could bring back the memories, and thanks for watching. If you'd be interested in sharing more about your personal experience and retrospective, please feel free to dm us on Twitter (link in description)!
9:13 I just want to highlight one line from the rules flyer.
"We suggest that you use your own Pokemon trading card game deck of 60 cards. If you don't have a deck with you, we'll *loan* you one."
THAT is a sentence you'd never see at most modern TCG tournaments. I've been to some local game stores that have rental decks for weekly tournaments, but a professional sanctioned event? That is WILD- and an interesting way to get new players into the game.
They were different times. It is an awesome concept though.
Idk if you realize just how high quality these are. These are higher quality than most video essays from youtubers with millions of subscribers. Your videos remind me of summoning salts when he first started our before he got big and it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if you reach that level. Idk anything about the TCG outside of your videos but they are so good that they got me interested
It honestly means so much to hear you say that. This isn't even our final form. Thanks for watching!
So glad I found this
Truly outrageous this doesn’t have more views
What are you handles on Instagram, TikTok and Twitter my liege, we need to blow you up 🎉🎉
Maybe it was recommended to me because I watch summoning salt but I'm a big fan of the kind of video you make. Very high quality
I subscribed due to the high quality 😊
these videos are fantastic please keep it up
Thank you so much! More coming soon!
Edit: Wow, I didn't even realize this was the actual Jarvis Johnson. Love your stuff as well. Thanks for stopping by!
i am absolutely obsessed with the wall of text crying out rallying against netdecking (or even, zinedecking) from 23 years ago 😂 "original deck ideas only" tournament sure is an... Interesting thought i'll give them that!!
Thank you so much for this beautiful video! I won one of the paid trips from the San Jose event for 10- age group. As a child growing up in a family with modest means, winning that trip sold to my family the world that opened up to me by supporting this hobby of mine. I owe my lifelong passion for Pokemon and all the places and people it has connected me to around the globe to this event. It was fun having a chance to relive this.
That's awesome! I know you placed at worlds a couple of times, too. Which qualifier did you play in? If you have any interest in sharing your personal experience or retrospectives, please feel free to reach out to us on Twitter!
@@rubyretro It appears your dms might be closed. Please feel free to contact @ knaacku. I am not sure I have anything exciting to share, but I am happy to support your great work if possible!
Base set - Neo Destiny was my favorite.
Being a kid when the Team Rocket expansion came out was exciting and fun. Great video.
Thanks!
This series has been my favorite hyperfixation for a while, i can't wait to see more
We'll do our best to keep going and improve! Thanks for watching!
My name is Nikkolas Baker, so hats off to you for also having a cool name!
It's a great name :)
oh my god i’m high off my ass right now and i remember loving the first video in this series thank you so much
Thanks for watching! Sorry for the wait, but I hope it was worth it.
cardboard crack is the supreme drug
This is something about the Pokemon TCG I never knew about and it probably my favorite thing in general when card games/video games do this. A competition series to earn an invite for a tournament on a Cruise Ship is such a cool idea. That would get me hyped as an adult, I can only imagine how cool it was for the kids back then.
Watching this after episode 1. It’s nice to see that Haymaker is finally starting to get effectively countered
Really glad you’re putting out more episodes to this series. I feel like I’ve heard the history of Base-Fossil era dozens of times while the later WoTC and early TPC years don’t get covered much
Yeah, we've got quite a few things coming up that have little or no coverage, so stay tuned!
I remember this era fondly. I was a little over 7 when this set hit, playing at my LGS with decks me and my dad made, until he got fed up with me ruining the decks with me slotting in whatever dark pokemon looked cool. Taking 2nd at a local tournament and winning a couple gym heroes starter decks is probably still my competitive peak lol. I don't play many games competitively anymore, and when I do, it's mostly in fighting games nowadays.
Thanks for making these, really takes me back to some good days.
Thanks for stopping by!
I'm so happy with this and excited to see where Pokemon history takes us next!
We will keep on going!
After Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, I hope Gamefreak decides to take time to make the next pokemon game LOL!
Honestly, I would love a well polished open world Gen 2 remake. If that can happen, I would die happy.
The dawn of the competitive scene. Thanks for the series, it's really fascinating learning everything I missed back in the day. Looking forward to the next episode ✌🏼
Thanks so much for the support and kind words!
So cool! I was at the Queen Mary STS! This was a great trip back in time. I would constantly run a haymaker with wiggly. I remember going to the mall tours. WOTC was so generous and gave out tons of packs to the players. What a great time to have been in the game. Thanks for this video 🙏🏼
That's awesome! Feel free to reach out on Twitter or Discord of you have an interest in sharing your particular experience with it.
I find it hilarious and awesome that The William Hung was a pokemon card champion back in the day. Love these videos dude, takes me back to the good ol days of Pokemon. I'm sad I missed out on all these Pokemon cards events when I was a kid.
Thanks for watching!
Ohhh boy next episode will be the best! Worst trainwreck meta of all time, gym heroes. Video about to be 🔥🔥
Stay tuned!
I still have photos of my wife and I with a giant Pikachu card just like you mentioned at 13:44. Who knows if I still have the floppy disc, though. I think that was at an event at the Mall of America.
It's also fun playing with these cards in Pokemon TCG 2 (with English patch) for the Gameboy color (and using 99 of each card cheat). It also features Japan-exclusive vending machine cards, such as a Hypno that allows clefairy dolls to use it's attack as well as gameboy exclusive cards.
The TCG gameboy games are underappreciated.
What I really appreciate of the GBC games is that you don't need to buy or source the decks physically to play and that the CPU handles the card behaviour and therefore a "judge" or third party isn't needed to abide to the rules. It's just a pretty cool way to learn the basics of the TCG and I love it. Best regards!
I'm impressed with all these sources you have to make such a detailed video without the internet being that big back then! Can't wait for more.
Stay tuned!
@@rubyretro The high level of care that you put into these videos is very apparent. Keep up making videos like this. It was an excellent watch.
As a kid who was 9 when this happened and played the Trading Card Game extensively during this era - this is one of the most impressive Pokemon Retro TCG videos ever done. Incredible job
Thank you!
@@rubyretro You inspired me to get the last remaining old Pokemon cards I have and now I am slowly rebuilding some decks you mentioned in your videos.
Brosseau's Metal Chansey
STS John Goldstein Gatr Deck (I actually met him while we were students at UC Irvine years ago lol)
Thanks!
I remember being turned away from the tournament they had at the Glendale galleria. At least I got to see the Pikachu car.
You take what you can.
So happy this series is continuing! The 2006 and 2010 episodes are going to be bangers
Thanks for tuning in!
I’ve always been into TCGs since I was a kid, but being born in the late 2000s, it always just felt like I was born too late. Like I missed out on the main course and was just picking up the scraps… these videos really scratch an itch for me. Thanks.
Been waiting for this ever since your first video came out!
Thanks for your patience!
@@rubyretro great work!
Ah man, DeltaSeeker uploaded yesterday, and now you upload today with a new TCG History episode. That's what I like to see. I really enjoyed this episode. The editing and music choices feel better than the previous part, and seeing all those old photos is awesome. I'm surprised so many of them are still around and can be found. Can't wait for the next part.
Yeah, we're taking whatever feedback we can to keep pushing for improvements. Thanks for tuning in!
I was anticipating this video after watching the first one you made, and this did not disappoint!
One idea I want to say that could help give clarity to the demonstration of card effects is to give visual guides/animations as to how they played. As an example, I had no problem following what you said about how Rocket's Sneak Attack and Imposter Oak's Revenge played well with each other at around 6:34 since I play the TCG game. This could be harder for other people to follow especially if they do not play this game at all.
Overall though, this got me hooked. Thank you for another banger.
Thanks for watching, and we really appreciate the feedback. We actually initially intended to have such edits included but didn't account for them when we recorded. We are running through the next few scripts we have done now to better accommodate a visual accompaniment to these types of breakdowns, so look forward to that!
@@rubyretro Will be looking forward to that. Thank you for the response! Best of luck to you and the team :)
Another banger. Glad to see you’re continuing with this series.
Thanks!
It is strange that Creatures didn't allow Wizards to use bans or a restricted list, considering Japanese tournaments had already been using both approaches with a banlist for juniors and a restricted list for seniors (one restricted card per deck), alongside a 15 pokémon minimum for junior decks and a 20 trainer maximum for seniors. Eventually Japan would move to the more extensive point based "Hall of Fame" restricted list in 2001 tournaments.
Where can I find these banned and restricted lists?
@@Sehon13Ultd Pokumon has articles on the 2001 spring/summer road tournaments as well as the 2002 battle road tournaments
@@Sehon13Ultd Along with articles about other earlier pre hall of fame tournaments, but it seems those will also be covered soon on this channel
@@Prowox dang I was hoping you meant for base-fossil or base-rocket
@@Sehon13Ultd There are some examples of those on Pokumon too, for example the Charizard Mega Battle tournament, the second big pokemon tcg tournament, restricted you to a maximum of 6 Team Rocket cards and 4 Expansion Sheet 1 cards.
I do not comment often but I believe the subscriber count when I saw this video. Incredible professionalism in editing and such wonderful research. I was a bit too young to experience tournament play for Pokémon this early and it is so interesting following the evolution of the card game. I’ve now watched both installments of this series and I desperately hope that you keep up the good work. Congratulations on making such a great video and I hope you are rewarded by more people like me being recommended it. I feel like I’m on the ground floor of something great.
Thanks for the vote of confidence and kind words! We appreciate you stopping by, and we'll continue to put out more content, always seeking to improve the quality.
This is a very nice video that showcased fascinating evolution of card design. I especially love the design of rainbow energy. It felt way ahead of its time, both by design AND effect
I don't know why I get such a kick out of these old meta videos but dang they're good. You're fantastic at capturing what the era was like. Thank you for the videos!
Thanks for stopping by!
Hooo boy, I remember doing these events as a kid. I got nowhere obviously, but it was still fun playing my deck. I'll always love my Dodrios. Now I'm a filthy Mewtwo V-Union and Mill player, hah!
🤣
Just wanted to let you know that I only recently became interested in the early Meta, and the Algorithm just so happened to send me to this video. Please keep it up.
Thanks for watching! We'll be making more, don't you worry!
Very rarely do I eagerly anticipate another video from a channel to this degree :)
We're flattered. Thanks for watching!
These are great, I can’t believe how much information you guys have. Puts me right back into the world of the time and my childhood.
Instantly subscribed.
Thanks for watching!
@@rubyretro thank you for making the videos! I can’t wait to watch more. As someone who played a lot of Pokémon from 99-2003 or so, I love this. Now that I’m older, I play Pokémon again, but now with my kids. It’s crazy to see look back at how the game used to be when I was so into it.
You guys rock!
I was eagerly awaiting this! My buddies and I recently got into making some "OG" decks using Base Set to Rocket. Love your work!
Much appreciated! I'm always glad to hear of more people getting into reteo Pokemon!
So good brother. So good! Keep it coming my man!
Thanks! Will do!
As a long time TCG player, I was always a bit sad that I couldn't really get into the Pokemon tcg in any competitive fashion, but these retrospectives are some of my favorite content on youtube right now. Very excited to hear more!
Thanks for stopping by! Stay tuned!
This is the kind of thing I love to watch. I have over 50 classic decks that I have built and play with, just as an extension to my personal collection. It's so hard to find people to play.
Thanks for tuning in!
Have subscribed to your channel after watching the '1999 competitive meta' . Really appreciate your efforts in doing this series, I am looking forward for more!
Thanks for the support! We'll keep going!
I found Jklacz blog because me and a friend were jaded from current standard Pokemon and were looking for other formats to play. These videos are fantastically in depth about the history too.
Thanks for watching!
Yes we get episode two!!! Watching now. Great stuff dude!
Thanks! Sorry for the wait.
@@rubyretro dude no worries, it was no wait at all.
The bracket visual at 15:26 is so sick!
Thanks!
I've been looking forward to this next installment! Perfectly timed for my dinner too, lovely.
Thanks for watching!
Incredible part 2. In the Platinum era, I played dining room table matches with a no holds barred format, in which I ran a copy of Here Comes Team Rocket that was somehow played nearly every game. It's great to see all of this compiled history, thanks for this.
Thanks for watching!
I haven't played the TCG for 23 years, but these video's are just so fun to watch! amazing production and research, keep up the good work.
Thank you!
Yeah. Rocket set was the beginning of a mini dark age for pokemon right as it was starting out.
Though it seems like this happens in a lot of card games where control tools get out of hand early on and then are brought back in line later.
You're not wrong. I wonder why that is. 🤔
I remember rocket set fondly. Bold to make a new set of worse/riskier cards. Also, the card art is so aggressive and stylistic compared to the paired down originals.
I remember Dark Gloom/vileplume being a menace in tcg 2 on Gameboy color.
I love the artwork from the rocket set.
Despite only collecting in my childhood and never once actually using those cards to play the game this series is AMAZING! Love hearing about metas and facts about a hobby/games lifespan.
You're too kind! Thanks for watching!
Finally I’ve been waiting for this
On to part 3
Sorry for the wait. Thanks for watching!
That commercial was nostalgic af..
Nostalgia bait to hook in the audience (but also to relive three nostalgia myself).
These are wonderful, please continue making more!
Thank you, we will!
First video I’ve ever watched from this channel. You deserve EVERY good thing coming your way. Accurate, engaging, and insightful. Thank you.
You're too kind!
I’m about to actually play for the first time ever even though I’ve owned them basically my entire life since the first base sets.
You have really gave me a solid appreciation of the progression of the game and I’ll always appreciate you for that
We appreciate you as well for giving us your time.
this is actually so timely. I have been revisiting pokemon and after having fun with the digimon tcg I've been meaning to finally beat those Pokemon tcg games I used to be terrible at as a kid. insight into metagame decks even if its maybe not the same format is super helpful.
awesome content and ez sub
Thanks for the support!
I really enjoyed this, and I hope you make more of these about the other earlier formats! It was great how you talked about the tournaments and provided decklists
Thanks for tuning in! There will definitely be more!
Couldn't wait for the next one after the last one. Thank you.
No, thank you!
Sincerely impressed with these videos. Can't wait to see more!
Thank you so much! Stay tuned!
Been waiting for this video! So good. Can't wait for part 3
Thanks so much! Stay tuned!
I’m From Argentina. I used to play Pokémon TCG back in the late 90’s- Early 00’s. I used to play with a Haymaker and won a few tournaments. This video is amazing. I would like to encourage you to continue this series. Thank you for making me remember those wonderful times.
Thanks for watching!
I don't even play the tcg, but watching these videos and how high quality they are really interests me. Can't wait to see more of these kinds of videos
Thank you and stay tuned!
The 2 videos currently in this series are incredibly paced, edited, and scripted! I really look forward to what comes next. Subscribed ^^
Friday. Be there.
So excited for you guys. This is amazing content. The narration is solid and editing is superb. And not a bad theme song, either! Haha.
Thanks for making us a great opening theme, my friend!
Yesss, these videos are so good, thank you for your work!! I really really appreciate these videos, learning about the history of prob my favorite game is amazing and the way you explain it all is great!
Thanks so much for tuning in!
Absolutely amazing videos. Really enjoyed this and the previous. Always have been looking for these kinds of videos, you'll see ridiculous growth pretty soon with subs and views!
Thanks for the vote of confidence!
Amazing videos man, really high quality stuff. Keep it up.
Thanks, will do!
Been so excited for this follow up!! Great video, so excited for part 3!
Thanks for waiting and stopping by! Stay tuned for more!
The music is such a joyful bop, accentuating the soothing voiceover explanation of a TCG era lost to time. My friends and I loved Nightly Garbage Run and Here Comes Team Rocket! I don't know if it was a "house rule," but we never dealt with the headache of Rocket Sneak Attack playing amongst friends. Maybe we simply didn't have many copies, or we thought the concept of destroying an opponent's hand was lame. Too bad so many of the Rocket evolved mons were rubbish.
I love these videos. Learning about old metagames of a game I used to play is amazing. Please don't stop making this high quality content!
We'll keep striving to make more. Thanks for watching!
These are fantastic! I feel like well-made, educational PTCG history content is very difficult to come by, thanks for the amazing content once again!
Thanks! We noticed these things are widely uncovered as well. Hopefully, we can continue to do these eras justice.
Thank you for all this coverage, its so freaking interesting! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this fascinating analysis and retrospective of the game and this era in its history! Keep up the great work in this series!
You bet we will, my man!
Recently, I was at my local card shop with some friends, and found a bunch of bulk from the sets made by wizards of the coast. We bought alot of it and had some amazing finds like dragonites and gengars from fossil, light flareon, dark flareon and even a holographic dark wheezing. We've had alot of fun playing with them, and these videos are rly useful in seeing what decks were like playing back before I played. (I mainly played around 2011-16). Thanks for the content.
Thanks for the support!
Love this series as a collector that never got to play as a kid!
Wow Yess!
I absolutely loved your first video and wasnt expecting another so quick, thanyou.
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Really love the effort you are putting into these documentaries! Such a great way to learn about the history of the game.
Thank you for stopping by!
Thank you for keeping this series going! I'm loving it!
Thank you for tuning in!
So great to get context for all these cards! Stoked for the Gym series
As are we! Stay tuned!
Phenomenal. This content is just everything that I ever want to see in any Pokemon TCG oriented channel, ever. Thank you! Please keep creating this type of content!
Thanks! Will do!
This quality is next level for such a small creator
Thanks!
Been waiting for the next episode, keep up the great work dude!
Thanks for standing by!
love these videos and I don't even understand the game. Thanks for the effort!
Thanks for watching!
I just wanna say thank you! Thanks for the great work. You explaining it very well and it is easy to understand why which card(s) was good. Even for me - a non Pokemon tcg player. You put a lot of effort into it and i realy appreciate!
Keep it going :)
Thank you for stopping by! You're too kind. More to come!
This is really great. Makes me wish I had gotten into the competitive scene back then...
Thanks! Y'know, it's never too late.
Really great video, can't wait for the next one :D
Thanks, stay tuned!
This is wild, I went to the Dallas one myself when I was six or seven years old. I had never played the game competitively, and got wrecked by haymaker decks. It was really cool, and I remember pulling my first Blastoise from a Base Set 2 pack afterwards. I played a lot more after this day.
I was there too. Ran a Mr. Mime/Alakazam stall deck. Didn't do too badly, but I didn't qualify
Amazing videos. I just got into playing standard but collected cards when I was little. The history behind the game is so interesting and your videos are superbly put together. Keep em coming!
Thanks for watching! More to come!
Love the deep dives. Found your channel so randomly, takes me back! I remember my first tournament where my psychic deck got mowed down by Haymaker.
Thanks for stopping by!
Hell yeah, I was looking forward to this after having seen the previous video recently! I was so disappointed when I found that there wasn't a second part yet. Looking forward to this video, the next, and everything after.
Yeah, our churn rate on videos is slow (for now), but we'll keep going. Thanks for stopping by!
My man is finally back
Sorry for the wait, and thanks for tuning in!
Totally new to the TCG and this is the best series for helping me catch up on 20 years worth of cards lol
Please keep it going ❤️
We're trying our best! Thanks for tuning in!
Bro this series has been amazing so far. Very interesting ! Keep it up and keep ‘em comin
Thanks! Will do!
This was an absolutely amazing video! Thank you so much for your thorough research and detailed descriptions of the decks the competitors used. It was so much fun to think about this era of the game again, and I very much look forward to future installments of this series! :D
Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for more!
Goop gas being printed in this set was great. How I turned 1 a kid in the super trainer showdown in Salt Lake City!
you have hit a content gold mine my friend, they are masterfully edited and your script writing is amazing. keep on bringing the videos! +1 sub
