Orange 'Pics Only' OR120 -vs- Marshall Super Lead

- I'm comparing a 1972 Orange "Pics only" OR120 to a 1971 Marshall Super Lead. I'm playing both through a 1971 Marshall 1960A+1982B Fullstack using a 2013 Gibson SG Standard Custom shop (Aged).
I think the Orange has a more complex and interesting character
Really prefer the orange to my surprise, What a great sound
I love both. Been playing mostly Orange and Marshall lately, and though mine are modern versions of both, the character of the amps are the same as in this video.
Put them together!!!
The Oranges always have that slightly fuzzy quality about them when they’re wound up. Both undeniable classics, great stuff as always!
Well done Brother! Great dynamics
and tones. Love them both of course and thanks for sharing Johan. Be Well All!
I fear I have unfairly judged Orange amps...brilliant comparison and playing Johan. Loved the outro.
Thanks Eddie! Glad to hear that!
SOME models ARE pretty hit'n'miss! But the GOOD 1s are amazing!
30-ish years ago I had each of these amps, in succession. Super Lead was my 1st tube amp. Got it in '86/7 paired with an old Hiwatt 4-12 w/Fanes = $650 USD. Was a mind-blowing replacement for my stolen Peavey Bandit !! A few years later I made an even trade at a local shop for an OR 120 half-stack. Before I sealed the deal I played both rigs, side by side, & even ran the S.L. thru an old Marshall cab.. I'll never forget the sheer visceral, physical difference between those amps. The Orange had so much more mid/low-range 'Punch'. Unfortunately, the OR had a habit of burning up tubes that even an old-head amp tech could never quite remedy. Silver lining is, a couple years after I got the Orange I sold it back to the shop where I got for $1,500 !! Of course, if I still had both those rigs today my $850 profit would be like pennies on the dollar - but so it goes.
I preferred the Orange between these two particular amps. The Orange has a vowely awe midrange ....maybe its more low mid? I like that. Marshall was great too but seemed mushier into saturation while the Orange seemed more articulate. Orange seemed more stable or happy cranked up compared to the Marshall....it was making some noises like it was about to blow. Maybe just microphonic feedback. Although they are both very classic rock there is something about that Orange that nails that classic rock character. The midrange is a bit different than the Marshalls midrange but you did make them almost the same at one point. Thanks Johan! I will never sell my pics only. Always sounds like Kossoff when Free played the German Beat Club. I think those were the Matamp Orange amps though. Still has that character tone to my ears.
More great work!! They both sound so good 😃👍🤘🤘🤘
Thanks Stuart!
Orange amplifiers we're extremely well-built back in the day. They last forever and sound great. Cheers Johan another great video.
I love Marshall's, but the note definition and articulation with the orange was really good
My goodness that SG sounds nothing short of phenomenal. It just screams pure rock n' roll.
You know you're doing it right when the amps are oscillating and the camera is shaking from the volume! 🎸🎵💥
:)
I thought the same lol! This is an awesome video. These amps are not for today's "bedroom" players.
Wow! This was a great comparison. Orange has a fullness to it. The Marshall is more trebley. Both are decent at what they do.
They provide a way different picking attack and to me that is the biggest difference. Because of that orange seems more pillowy whereas the SL is grittier and more textured and I love that realness.
‘More Pillowy’ good choice of words👍
Pillowy. Lol You're a Marshall fan. The Orange sounds way better in this.
the clean tone on both of these amps sounded great, as well as the overdriven tones. Both great amps, though i think i’d prefer other models by both companies ( an original Orange Matamp and a Super Bass )
That Orange is badass. Aggressive in a way that makes me smile. I'm pretty sure if I open my windows here in Canada I'll hear Johan rocking out
the way he smiles, cranking it : )
Both sound killer man! Cheers
Glad to hear it! Cheers!
The Marshall cab imparts a lot of Marshall flavour to the Orange sound in this clip. Works really well IMO
I loved both, but for this video, with that guitar, I thought the orange sounded better. It just seemed to have more of everything. I wonder what it would sound like with a Variac EVH style?
That Orange is sounds amazing 🔥
I would love to hear both hard panned left and right maybe a strymon deco for width, bet it would crushhhhhhhh. Great video.
Would sound wicked as Fuck!
May have been the recording but in some of the Marshall clips it sounded like there may be some hf oscillation. Might be a microphonic tube but I'd check it out on a scope to ensure no real oscillation is going on.
I never liked the orange tone, this much, before! Great demo
I like the "F.A.C." control. I wish more modern amps had them.
nailed this test
Love your videos ..... Because there are very informative about amplifiers especially Marshalls I actually call you the Marshall man I actually have a few of them myself I have a special edition 1959 model made in 1997 its purple super lead 100 wat .... It's amazing ... I have one problem with it .... ? It sounds awesome when the volume is little past halfway ... My question is ?? Can I use a intinuator ... Will it hurt the amplifier..? And if not ... What is a good one to use...?
Lolz I see that you're human after all, johan. It's great to see the sheer physical experience of this kind of db action. Like a "smell you can feel".
Hahaha! Yeah it’s a physical experience indeed
LOL! IF you ever get to smell my dog's farts, you'd absolutely FEEL them as well!
@@DMSProduktions notice johan never dawns the proverbial "stank face"? He's super human. 😖
@@owlytimbre9103 Hehe! But he is NO Doctor Rick! Now HE pulls faces!
@@DMSProduktions I think frusciante met your dog.
I'll take one of each, Johan!
Thanks again, Johan! A demo with a Super Lead is never wrong.
My impression is that the Orange had some good qualities: more aggressive sound and actually better definition with better string separation. However, Super Lead is "The Sound" for certain music, and to my ears cannot be beaten. I guess I am biased.
Is that Super Lead stock or modified?
Thanks Bengt! Its actually a Superbass modded into a Superlead
@@JohanSegeborn Adam Jones style :p
Biased? WAS that a VALVE joke?
Grymt jobbat Johan! Du är fantastisk! Vi syns framöver! Du skapar eld och magi!
I was surprised at how close you got them on certain sounds, they have different characters but can definitely meet in the middle and overlap if dialed in
Really woow👍👍👍 ,hot tones, impressed also by the OR. my god a real beast. .. (Seems cold in Sweden right now😱)
The Orange Matamp OR120 was the real sound behind Led Zeppelin, Peter Green, BB King, and so many others. Nothing here is said about volume but that Orange will guaranteed walk on that Super Lead volume wise.
Sounds great but Johan DO A WINDMILL 🎸🤟🎸
Sounds like heaven
I'M A BOY I'M A BOY, BUT MY MUM WON'T ADMIT IT! I'M A BOY I'M A BOY, BUT IF I SAY I AM I GET IT!
Great tones! What pickups are in that SG?
If I had the money, I'd have both, each with matching half stack, and run them together haha 😂 the ultimate hard rock rig with a touch of doomy goodness
OR120 sounds killer but I’d love to hear it on the Hi input. I believe the top input is the Low on any old Oranges I’ve had
That is true. I think se the lower input on mine which is the high output.
Originally, these amps had no lettering on the front control panel, earning them the nickname "Pics Only."
It was done for the non-English speaking audience, so they didn’t have to translate the amp faceplates in multiple languages.
So did you feel any important differences between the amps when playing? Did the Marshall feel more ’spongy’ or elastic or like compressing more than the Orange?
Orange is fantastic!!!! Always a Super Lead player..wish I had that Orange 🍊
Is there any current production Orange amp that sounds as good as this one in this vid?
Maybe the Orange custom shop 50 ( 50 watts ) & the OR 15 series ( 15 watts ) .
Awesome Iconic sounds - Now add Laney & Hiwatt amps - That would be Interesting ! !
I love your videos sir. And I take it that your neighbors are on the next continent??
May I ask, where orange vintage 4×12 Front or rear loaded?
Match made in Heaven- S G plugged into ORANGE- Tasty playing Johan always Brilliant...
I like the chirp that the Marshall has :)
why my 74 or120 sounded a bit muffled and saggy 😭
both sound good. i prefer super lead
Thanks!
I love my pics only. Second only to the pics and text I personally prefer. Orange and Matamp can't be beat imo.
Haha, Johan makes everything sound great! But these are both world class amps. They sound similar here, but my Marshall 1987 and OR120 (with only 2 output tubes in use) sound and feel pretty different. I’m pretty sure Johan likes to dial in his amps with little bass, but if you run the bass higher these two amps diverge a bit. My Marshall sounds more rounded and refined, with a smooth clean-up, and my Orange sounds meaner and fuzzier, but still cleans up ok.
LITTLE in it afaic! BOTH RAWK! \m/
I think the 1972 Orange OR120 is the best sounding amp in the world… Because that’s my (main) amp 😁.
The size of the transformers on the OR120!
That is a fire-breathing dragon, monstrosity of a stack
Still the Marshall for me, kinda cuts better and has more bite, sounds angry and that's what I love about them
Are there any actual circuit or even component differences between "pics only" or120's and the ones with the controls labeled that came later in '72 and on until Orange ceased production? On looking at some photos it seems possible the transformers may have changed from the ones here (that look almost like "laydown" style Partridge transformers) to post-laydown Marshall style transformers but I'm not sure. The ones I saw possibly could've been aftermarket replacements. I'm interested because I'm in the market for a 1970's Orange and "pics only" or120's can fetch as much as $1k or $2k more than the later "labeled" or120's. It'd be interesting to know if the price difference is strictly for the collectability/looks of the "pics only" or if there are actual circuit and/or component differences.
There's a few changes in a circuit & transformers mostly in the phase inverter and a popular mod is changing it back to the 72 style PI. There are also Pix & Text models out there with Pix only internals as well (laydown transformer, preamp tubes on the board). Check out the orange field guide if you want to see schematics.
i have same amp as here, w/ same transfrmrs too, they are not partridges, tho some earlier matamp oranges had partridges, these are not those. The differences are slight as dude above said. I have had many of the post 72 ones too, sound basically same, neither "better" just a hair different. The main reason the pix only go for a bit more is there are less of them so not as common, and they look even more funky 70s-ish, thats all really, not much of a tone diff
Interesting!
Whats crazy is that he did not even use the Hi input on the Orange. That's just the Low input.
I was a hardcore Fender guy, that was until I plugged into an OR120🤘🏻
I wish Orange bring back the FAC control
Both sound pretty similar actually
Hi Johan! sounds ace ! I wonder if you can do a OR120 video! Just like those plexi videos but with oranges! Glad to hear one used like a rock amp not some doom head LOL
Tasty!
🇨🇦
it doesn't get an better than this for crunch.
Recording this must have been brutally loud. The camera is shaking with every note, even the high notes!
I had one of these Oranges, bought it used for little money. But I sold it. Too loud.
Orange for the W…..always.
Konge!🤘👹
👉🏻🧡👈🏻
Orange are just cooler.
if you cut off bright cap on lead - they'll be closer
Noticeably thicker than the Marshall
Juicy.
The Marshall definitely comes out the winner in my opinion...
they seem pretty close..
This just proves to me that orange amps are by far superior to Marshalls, I wanna see this with a les Paul that would rule!
It's just a matter of taste. In that video, i prefer the Marshall
Marshall all the way.
Hi Johan ! You still got ... mojo ! 👍
Thanks, I’m glad to hear that!
Doesn't the OR120 weigh twice as much as the Marshall? My guitar player about through out his back lifting mine. "Sorry man, just more British tone or steel in it". I use it as a bass amp. 💪 💪
not twice as much but a little more, maybe 5 lbs more...orange has bigger transformers, i have this same amp
@@RocknJazzer He was using a JCM 900. Maybe that's the difference.
@@Mr.Saltwater dont know the 900s, gave up on them in the 90s. 70s orange heads weigh a hair under 50 lbs
@@RocknJazzer that 900 must've weighed 20 pounds tops. Circuit boards, small transformers etc.
@@Mr.Saltwater😂 no, the DSL 20 weighs a bit over 20 pounds, the JCM 600 head I've got weighs about 40 pounds and it's got regular sized ,60 watt dagnall transformer T58 I Guess and it's full of circuit boards and tubes, at least 4 12ax7 and 2 EL-34 tubes. The JCM 900 had to weight more than the the 600 .
Orange thicker with more compression, Marshall more open. Both pretty sweet. That SG pairs well with the Orange, a thinner guitar generally does pair with a thicker amp tone...and vice versa. My guess is your R9 would pair better with the Marshall.
I do not hear any differences
WHAT?!!
Gotta love the British sound!
I don't think this comparison was fair. Both amps sounded the same through the Marshall stack(probably with Celestions in it). Try the same comparison through an Orange stack with Voice Of The World speakers in it. Or put each amp through its normal stack.
The shear balls it takes to name your amp after a fucking fruit, give it the dirtiest most unwieldy tone imaginable, adorn it with pictures of elves and Mr. Tumnus, and then remove all the numberings. It's absolutely nuts, that's why Orange is so cool.
If I had the money, I'd have both, each with matching half stack, and run them together haha 😂 the ultimate hard rock rig with a touch of doomy goodness
That’s my rig 😅
