    The big question I see people ask that is never answered is the ceramic hexagons. People worry about the adhesive used and the hexagons shifting etc over time from exposure to heat and the elements. How long does it take for the rifle protection of FRAS to degrade from the elements?

    Honestly the biggest selling point for me is the coverage area. Military research has shown the most common fatal injury in those wearing body armor at shots that make it in the side or up under your armpit. Let's face it, the real world scenario where you're truly square to the bag guy is rare at best so the flank protection is important

    Personally I think an ideal setup would be the FRAS as normal daily wear, with an external carrier with level 4 plates ready to go in the car for active shooter situations. My only question is how well does FRAS by itself hold up to spike threats?

    • @colt.452zigzags3
      @colt.452zigzags3 4 роки тому

      Yugophoto I just want to clarify the setup. You go with the FRAS on daily patrols but keep a plate carrier sized big enough to go over you and the FRAS, yes? I have to say it's interesting to think about and may be quicker than taking off the FRAS, putting in plates and putting it back on. But the other side to that coin is that there's possibility that it can shift and even ride up your body altering the safe hit box and exposing organs. I don't really know. But it's a sound idea.

    I think the 3A plus is plenty enough until you come up against rifles so they both have their place. As far as looks, that issue went away with all of the nationwide riots after the Geroge Floyd murder in the summer of 2020. The explanation is the key to a threat level you need because you still have to be tactical and move to avoid being hit in the 1st place and the use of cover.

    I’m a bit concerned about the weight of the FRAS system. I can buy 2 Duritium III+PA Body Armor Plates for front and back and they only weight 2.7 pounds per plate and they’re each only 0.7 inches thick. No side protection, but the total weight is only 5.4 pounds. I could add 2 side plates to the Duritium front and back plates and the entire system would still be under 10 pounds total. Not to mention the Duritium front and back only being 0.7” thick. The FRAS definitely looks for comfortable.
    My other concern is that the FRAS only has a 5 year warranty whereas the Duritium plated have a 15 year warranty. The Duritium plates also withstand constant temps 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Does anyone what the temperature tolerance is for the FRAS armor? If they are stored in a hot vehicle will they be damaged?

    A lot of people say the FRAS is a heavy system, but when compared to anything except the ultra lightweight plates that run a cool grand each, the FRAS is either on par or lighter. And to compare the FRAS to a Level 4 plate with soft backer is not a real good comparison. Id say a Lvl 3+ plate would be equal playing field.

    would be interesting if they gone the path of medieval brigantine: have large solid plate over your ribs, but smaller then average size (basically swimmers cut), and those flexible tiles around it, to protect everything else. Thus such armor would be able to provide better rifle protection for the vital organs, and possibly, cost less as the production of solid plates seems to be cheaper. Another possible advantage: if solid plate is replaceable, it can be swapped for much cheaper, in case of center mass hit.

    I would assume that the FRAS still stops everything the 3A+ stops as well right? Such as the police 5.7x28 rounds, the 50grain civil defense rounds 12 gauge armor penetration rounds and such. And still taser and spike/stab proof.

    I wounder is it possible to combine two approaches, similar to large plate brigandine. Basically have III level swimmers cut in front and on the back, and cover with tiles everything AROUND it. What will be achieved is better protection of vital organs and less use of expensive tiles. So theoretically, it would be possible to make a cheaper vest with better protection and only slightly reduced mobility.

But you get the occasional goon with pistol classified ARs and Aks which are more concealable than a full length rifle but packs nearly all the punch. The only thing I don't like about the FRAS is it's lack of NIJ certification as level III or III+ to stop .308 and 7.62x51 rounds. You can get Lvl III+ steel plates to put in. • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  4 роки тому

      That depends on the medium you are penetrating and the construction of the bullet, both materials and design.

    • @Type09V
      @Type09V 4 роки тому

      so with the same design(like APCR?),the quality(my understanding is that a bad constructed bullet will more likely to fail when impact?) of the bullet also affect the performance of the bullet?(I am new to this category,so don't punch me if I asked silly question)

    • @patrick6504
      @patrick6504 4 роки тому +1

      @@Type09V Assuming that both bullets were the same material and size (Not possible in the real world) if they both impacted the target with the same amount of energy behind them then they would both penetrate the same amount. The quality of the bullet generally only affects how precise it is, it's unlikely that the quality would matter too much for penetration unless the bullet was of a hilariously low quality. Although in a similar vein to what your thinking, stronger materials that flatten less upon impact such as steel vs lead will cause the bullet to have less surface area exposed to the armor while penetrating, which would result in more penetration.

      I mean if you really want to wear 35lb of armor that's 5" thick, go for it. The FRAS does have plate slots though, so that might be the better option. Cheaper, lighter, not as bulky and probably better protection too.

    • @colt.452zigzags3
      @colt.452zigzags3 4 роки тому +3

      Yes there is a reason why dragonskin isn't around. It's price point was in the several thousands and weighed in at ~47lbs. This is ~16lbs at $1,600+\-. While dragonskin is nice and can stop a lot, it's also cumbersome and heavy. FRAS is fairly revolutionary. But maybe not to some internet warrior like yourself.

    • @colt.452zigzags3
      @colt.452zigzags3 4 роки тому

      bryanscle well let's see... I never said it was trash. Expensive? Yes. Heavy? Yes. Trash? No. But you have to remember the military outfits their grunts with what's called a combat load(all equipment necessary to engage in combat), and an existing load (all equipment necessary for their continued operation in a region). In combination we are talking 125~150lbs now swich a 30lb armor system with one at 47lbs that's undue load on the soldiers. Not to mention they already spend 18k PER SOLDIER. Plus It simply did not pass the military trials. I did hear the CIA ordered a batch of dragonskin but they don't have to lug around +100lbs of weight. So educate yourself before you embarrass yourself "little man"
      P.s. Anything you try to attack me with personally I'm just going to assume is you projecting your insecurities. So just stop trying to make personal attacks it makes you look weak.
