      They way they portray Iroh is horrible, you can't feel anything for him, or that he has any regrets, he just made a poor excuse by saying they were at war, and he was a soldier, meaning he was just blindly following orders. For those who read the book, knows Iroh besieged Ba Sing Se for 600 days, and was brutal war lord. And in this episode, he shows no remorse and no feelings at all for the crimes he committed. Just poor excuses or silence. Horrible is the word!

      Exactly. Iroh was a lifelong general in a constant war, who only really questioned 'what is this all about' when he, personally, lost the most important person in the world to him. How many sons, husbands, and fathers did he take from others - directly or via his army - before coming to that realization?

    I think Bumi came across as a little harder than usual exactly for the reasons he said. After a CENTURY of making hard calls, his old friend shows up like nothing has happened? Like choices weren't being made between feeding soldiers or children? I think he saw in Aang what a century of war had taken from him, a literal representation of the good old days. I like that at the end that instead of teaching Aang a lesson, he ends up learning/being reminded of one. That's pretty ATLA, and it opens the door to Bumi being more Bumi in later episodes.

    • @dawidschaffrath8426

      yeah. This is the moral dillema that I like in live action. They depict war not as a game but as a time where you must sacrifice something (your innocence/goodness especially when you are a king). Good king ≠ good person (not always).

    11:26 Katara pulled the ice out of nowhere with Jet in the OG series as well. That was the first time I remember using it anyway and it seemed out of nowhere that time too. I think what was great about this episode was that it really shows how the war had affected everyone from different sides. Bumi was forced to grow up and make hard decisions and didn’t have Aang there to consult with let alone confide in which made him feel abandoned. Iroh had lost loved ones as well as he was forced to take other people loved ones against his reluctance. Can’t wait for more reactions!!!

    I wasn’t the biggest fan of Bumi either but after watching the episode again as well as watching it with my friend who’s never seen the Animation. You can see what the writers were doing. They were going on a more realistic POV. Bumi has been fighting a war for 100 years, having to make very hard decisions every day. Aang returns, and Bumi didn’t know he was the Avatar back then. So seeing Aang he quickly puts two and two together, his really good friend is alive, he’s the Avatar which means Bumi is feeling resentment, betrayal but also determined to help Aang understand what war is because Aang hasn’t lived through war. Great reaction guys, can’t wait for y’all to watch the rest of the season.

    The show's actors stated that this adaptation will focus more on the characters' backstories and getting to know them in a different light rather than the quirky and wacky acts of the original cartoon characters. It makes sense that it is an adaption rather than a perfect 100% duplicate of the original. It is a unique perspective on the story, but it also respects the original's wonderful concepts.

    I think Bumi is an ok change. Imagine if he was exactly like the animated one, he’d be ridiculousl in LA. I think they just wanted to take a more realistic approach since it’s LA. He would feel hurt and betrayed after 100 year war that started right when his friend left. His friend who was supposed to stop this war. He warms up by the end, and I think his character will be more like our Bumi as he goes along.

    Bumi's unhingedness is funny and cute in an animated show, but the reality of it in real life is an older person with dementia. This IS how someone who was as weird as he was in the comics would be, with the how scary it is because he's so random. In the cartoon we can chuckle about how goofy it is. In real life it's unsettling.

    I am the same with Spartan, I got mixed feels on this episode. For me, the only actual gripe I have with this adaptation is Bumi. I have viewed and accepted the whole season, enjoyed a lot, Bumi hit me wrong. For a character design they did well, depicted as an eccentric old man who is strong. Had a bunch of his odd quirks. But Bumi was meant to be a loving part of Aang's past, one he could turn to, to ground him and give him advice. A rare not bad adult. He was never meant to be a bitter old man, we have plenty of them. Since he changed for the better by the end I accepted it, but I still wish they didnt change him. But apart form Bumi, I loved the rest of the episode! Nice homage to a lot of characters and side stories. Also nice Spartan you're the first reactor I've seen caught "Leaves from the Vine" being played during the funeral! They didn't make him sing the famous song, but they did have it present, which made me cry. The funeral didn't exist in the OG series, but it was a beautiful little moment for Zuko and Iroh. Also mad respect for "Secret Tunnel!!"

    The whole Bumi change was not too bad, in my opinion, because it does make sense he would feel that way after a century of war. It does, however, make Bumi feel different than in the cartoon, and I agree with some people that say this angle doesn't really feel needed and could have been used for a different character. Still, I don't mind think it sets back the story much. That being said, the resolution really did not feel earned. It came off somewhat cheesy. Also, I don't really understand how sokka or katara really helped. Aang literally moved the boulders sideways anyways lol.
    The part I really hated about this episode was the cave of the two lovers. While some of the dialogue was alright, most of it felt stale and pointless. Also, the badger moles "sensing" their love is absolute lazy garbage writing. I felt like I could defend the show against slander up until that. If you're not gonna even try to make it make sense, just don't add it. They took out an aang and katara moment for a steaming pile of crap writing that didn't even need to be added this season.
    Nevertheless, anything that had Zuko and/or Iroh in it was an absolute win. The solstice decision rebirthed, the dynamic duo fighting, Iroh's words to aang, the exchange between Iroh and the Earth nation soldier, and both of the immaculate flashback scenes with leaves from the vibe subtlety playing in the background. You could say that it would be hard to mess those scenes up, but honestly, they executed them perfectly (not well or adequately, but with a keen grasp of what makes ATLA ATLA).

    Completely disagree with your opinions on Bumi. I saw the animated series first and always felt Bumi was too ridiculous & happy go lucky. Took away from the seriousness of the lessons he was trying to teach Aang. Conceptual good themes to convey but watered down and I honestly didn't feel much.
    Compare that to this more grounded, realistic, darker, bitter take on Bumi and it makes for a much more complelling test for Aang psychologically & emotionally. I personally felt waaaaay more from both Aang and Bumi in the adaptation. Also, I thought the actor did a excellent job of playing a more serious/darker unhinged version of Bumi.

And its the same with Avatar, the voice actors were all highly talented.. With anything that's animated, the budgets not all being blown on special effects or finding actors who are the same age/look similar. Spartan you're focusing too much on what you can expect from an anime and taking to a real actors, one example I cite is you actually expected old Bumi to have one near explosive eye while the other squinted, all of anime cannot possibly translate to real life actors without extremely heavy usage of CGI and that itself would crush this show for trying too hard, I hope you can be mature enough to understand that. Second thing is about story progression and where and what things happened and how they happened, yeah I give you that but again the reality of using real people for a show is far costlier than an anime so any number of things could come up and they really have to give people a gist of the story while still allowing full experience of emotions. Some minor understandable things have been fast tracked while others have been elaborated. You guys gotta realize people who have never watched the original series are now tuning in too so they have actually made a good balance for all, giving fans stuff while giving non fans stuff that they both can hang on to. I wish people would stop taking everything so negatively.

    The secret tunnels thing was the only thing that bothered me about this season mostly because it was in the second season of the original series and in this there were only Sokka and Katara which feels off but I think they did it that way because of two things the pandemic and the age difference between the actors playing Aang and Katara but they renewed the show for seasons two and three

    I 100% agree with you both. The visuals of the show are nothing short of beautiful.
    At least some of the story telling modifications were good. Some we're contrived and I did not like. I think almost all of the deeper exploration of Zuko/Iroh characters was well done. But some of that I think is to the detriment of team Avatar (they seem like the side plot in their own show). Maybe because a great deal of the character development we see is from Zuko. It just all felt a bit rushed. Fingers crossed that they try and let the story breathe more in seasons 2 & 3.

    My initial feeling of Bumi was that they butchered the hell out of him, but after thinking, how Bumi acts is completely understandable after 100 years of war. On the other hand, I don't like how Aang had to teach Bumi the lessons and not the other way around

    I agree that they changed the essence of Bumi too much. He was too suicidal and not wise enough.
    Also the focus was more on Bumi learning a lesson instead of Aang .
    I think the actor did fine with what he was given. Bumi is definitely the most difficult character to play in a live-action.

  • @TheFireMonkey
    @TheFireMonkey 6 місяців тому +2

    Bumi in the animation is a much more fun character, in the live action he is more believable. The animation is more child friendly while still being fine for adults, this Bumi is a more mature version - someone who grew up in a world at war and has spent 100 years watching everything fall apart.

    Could have been the greatest show ever made, and many people would still have decided they hated it simply for existing. Sometimes, without even watching it. Just how it goes with adaptations. Personally, I loved it. I really enjoy the original, but it's not one of my most beloved franchises. So it doesn't bother me when they change stuff.

    I know ppl have had mixed opinions. I personally had so many issues with this remake. Like if it was its own thing fine. But since it's a life action version I can't help but to compare it. Obviously I didn't think it would be a 1:1 copy and paste but one big thing in this episode I didn't like was the tunnel. Katara and sokka went in. In the animated series it was aang and katara and it was a crucial part of their journey and experiencing their feelings towards each other.😬

    • @withxoutxlife
      @withxoutxlife 6 місяців тому

      At this part of the story, that plotline would have felt very out of place. Aang still feels too young for her in the live action (at least for me personally), and they haven't established any sort of romantic interest for Katara yet. It would have seemed forced. I'd rather they let the chemistry build a bit more, which will probably happen some time in season 2, assuming they want to keep the romance plotline.

    • @lukethorpe216
      @lukethorpe216 6 місяців тому

      @withxoutxlife yeah I get that. That is very true. That's just one of the many reasons it's floored. It just seems rushed to me like they condensed 2 seasons in like 8 episodes. Like they had omashu, jet and the freedom fighters, the inventor and his his kid, earth king scene, secret tunnels etc all in like 2 episodes

    This series is my introduction into the ATLA world...I'm loving the dynamic between Zuko and Iroh. Iron seems to be the only love and family that Zuko has ever experienced. Iroh in turn needs his nephew to fill the void left behind after his son's passing. These two actors are the only ones doing/impacting anything for me.
    Ngl I didn't 'get' Bumi....1st of all he looks gross lol (not important, I know but...) and he came out of nowhere. The show didn't explain to me the significance of the friendship between Aang and Bumi, he came off as a bad Disney villain...and why would a man that age be so resentful of a child?
    Yeah ok he had plenty of responsibility etc but did he not learn any wisdom or tolerance in being a ruler who had to make the hard choices he keeps banging on about? It seems the Bumi character was better developed in the animation and I hope so, this intro to him made no sense to me nor did it make any mark on me as a viewer, indeed IDK how important Bumi may or may not be in ATLA but I hope to never see him again..

    • @withxoutxlife
      @withxoutxlife 6 місяців тому +3

      You can't fathom what 100 years of war would do to someone's mental state. Being 112 years old on its own deteriorates even the strongest of minds. Add to that the trauma and stress of the situation he had to live through, and I'd say Bumi's portrayal was far more accurate to what one could expect in reality, compared to what was shown in the animated version. That said, I do prefer the animated version to the live action. However, I would be lying if I said that I don't think live action Bumi's perspective narratively fits, or that I don't 'get' where he's coming from.
