  • It was sunny but very cold and windy this weekend. I decided to shoot more places I’ve never been to. First we have the NS training center in McDonough, GA. It was busy so I had to avoid flying over people. There were a couple things I wanted to get close to but couldn’t. Lots of high hoods and equipment there. Maybe I’ll try again another day. Then we have the CSX REDI Center in Atlanta. Nobody was there on that day so smooth sailing. Then we finish up at the former NS shop at Wells. This was once the locomotive shop for Southern. Most people call it the car shop, but from what I am told they didn't service cars there. The yard seems to get used still. It was windy as heck and drained the batteries quick. The last video I had to shoot with the camera so sorry for the wind noise. A Ferromex was a nice surprise on the 2nd empty coal train.

Talk about memories. I grew within walking distance from the shop. As a kid I went sleep to these sounds. The road at the crossing is McDaniel Street. Boy oh Boy!

The signal there is CP Wells so that’s what we call the spot.

Beautiful big facility !!I'm in Montana , so facilities here are quite a bit smaller due to a smaller population serviced by BNSF . Neat to see the training car. Have heard about it and never got to see them until now , thank you .

Amazing video. I was thinking this is an excellent exploration of a section of the line many have never seen and then you caught a Ferromex towards the end 😀

The NS Pegram shop at Wells was not ever a former car shop. It was built by Southern as a locomotive shop. It was a major shop on the Southern system, especially in days of passenger service. It was a heavy maintenance facility. It served that purpose thru NS merger up until NS closed and condensed facilities in late 90s or early 2000s. It was leased or is leased to several businesses who do various things. It was also used during the Walking Dead series. So you may want to adjust your video title

Thanks for the info. I’ve only ever heard it called the car shop. Can’t edit title in video without pulling it down, losing all views, re-editing and uploading. So not likely. Errors happen. Got to live with them. I updated the description and UA-cam title.

did you get permission to use a drone because i really wanna go there also where did you park?

People always think you need permission to fly places. You only need permission to fly near airports. The drone will not allow you to take off or fly into no fly zones unless you get permission first which you get right on the drone controller through your phone. Takes about 10 seconds. Property owners do not own the air space over their properties. Only the FAA can regulate air space. There is no “critical infrastructure” clause in the FAA regulations. Cities and states can not regulate the air space above them either. They can pass ordinances preventing you from “operating” the drone in their jurisdictions but they can not prevent you from flying over them. Operating is not the same as flying. While flying you must observe all FAA regulations and avoid flying over groups of people. You can fly over cars and whatever you want. If you crash and injure someone or cause property damage you are responsible. With a drone you don’t have to be particularly near where you are flying as long as the drone is visible to you, so you can park in a reasonably safe area if one is nearby. Stay off railroad property.
