When working as crew on a private passenger car we carried spare hoses and a spare knuckle ( CS = Controlled Slack ). Because you never want to be out in the middle of nowhere and have one of those fail. As for 12 hour clock, Amtrak often hits that on the run from Lorton to Sanford on the Auto-Train. They switch crews at Florence but that still doesn't mean they won't go on the law somewhere North of Sanford. Crew knows where to stop though so that the ride can get to them easily. Stay safe out there.
@@KurtisCharlton After the Hurricane hit the East Coast a few years back all the trains on CSX going North and South had delays. We had places where we were doing 10 MPH because we had to have a track inspector running ahead of the train. Signals were out and showing flooding so they had to go slow. How bad was it. The NB AT got into Lorton after we were already supposed to have left. 1630 departure became a 2100 departure. 0800 arrival in Sanford became a 1645 arrival there. Instead of just supper, they gave us sandwiches from Subway for that meal, gave us breakfast, then gave us what would have been dinner as the lunch meal. The crews all went on the law as they had to show up at the times that were scheduled even though the equipment wasn't there for the runs. I think they gained back an hour each day before they finally go back on the regular schedule. The NB we met had to swap out engines in the lead as it hit a tree in another section of the track. Plus CSX hit a car South of Jax. Wasn't a good trip for the crews.
What's the actual hourly pay rate as an NS conductor AFTER training and is there overtime pay for daily or weekly overtime hours. I just started training and would be working out of the Harrisburg, PA yard. I haven't gotten a clear answer to these questions from instructors and am starting to think the advertized $70k/year is based on 60 hours a week and suddenly this whole gig doesn't seem that lucrative anymore... So an honest answer about the hourly pay would help immensely right now
On the SP. Used to die, and sit in a trailing unit for 4 to 6 hours waiting for a crew to come and haul into the home terminal. UP you will grow skeletons and become a senior citizen and really die.

From what I understand, Its not retroactive. If I were to guess it should start on Monday once the update is made in the system but your instructors are right. It will update as soon as HR gets it moving. 👍🏻🚂.

The quicker you get your physical and start your background check, the quicker you will get a response from ns. Don't wait to do it either. My Previous job wouldn't give me the day off i needed to go get the earliest available scheduled physical for ns that i could, so i just walked out and quit and went to my scheduled physical. Keep checking your email like every 3 hours including your SPAM folder. You'll get the response you have been waiting for soon enough. Hope this helps good luck.

Some other jobs is after 40. Now my question is after 8 hrs do I get overtime PAY? Or is is straight pay for 12 hours or until you reach 40hrs then overtime. Please let me now. I'm curious. I just can see a big unionized organization not paying overtime weather it's after 8 or 40. Or does it go by job rate? Like a road train might pay let's just say 400 pr day where a local/switch pays 325 pr day and the yard might only pay 200 pr day. How exactly does this work?
Each shift is based on a set job rate for a 12 hour day. You are compensated for overages, held away pay at your away terminal, stipends for food, training stipends etc once marked up. During your 13 weeks of training you will make $25 an hour or $200 a day, whichever is higher. You do not receive held away pay and aren’t allowed on deadheads, during training so call dispatch to get on the next train out as soon as your 10 hours of rest are up👍🏻🚂

Absolutely. The reality is people need extra days off for family obligations, rest, vacations, or people quit. On the extraboard…you are the glue that fills in those gaps. Eventually, you’ll get sent to train as an engineer and your pay and options increase as well. 👍🏻🚂
I'm really on the fence on whether or not to apply. NS has a yard in Princeton,IN near where I live an I keep seeing ads on indeed. I'm wantingvto better the financial situation for myself and kids, but I'm a fulltime single dad on top of work a ft and pt job. I've heard the stories of no home time. What if any advice would you give on this situation of mine? TIA
Being honest. Unless you have really stable child care I wouldn't do it. The lifestyle is tough and during your first few years you will be gone a lot until you gain seniority that will allow you to hold jobs with better schedules. In this industry they give spousal pensions on top of yours after you've been married for ten years. The reason they do that is because they know that the job doesn't work without support. Especially when you have kids. I hate to discourage anyone from applying because I am a product of a railroad household. I've seen the money that can bet made and the retirement that comes from this great career. My grandfather passed away this year and my grandmother and special needs uncle will never have to worry about anything financially for the rest out their lives because the Railroad retirement board issues a pension to both of them as dependents. NS has paid MILLIONS in medical bills over the years as they aged and covered every dollar of his cancer treatment. That being said, if my grandmother wasn't around to pack his lunch, wash his clothes, and cover for him on all of the family activities when the railroad called, it would have never worked out. He missed a lot of baseball games but he never missed a mortgage payment. It's a big sacrifice and your family either understands and appreciates it or they will hate you for it. The decision is up to you but I want you to know that the first few years are pretty rough. -Kurtis
I feel like the benefits of working RR at one time were phenomenal. Now however I am not sold. Most companies want me to pay $100 each check for health insurance and other coverages. I have declined benefits in recent jobs because I can’t afford the reduced net income. Idk how that compares to RR. 60-70k for first year earnings in many industries is pretty average earnings in this economy with inflation. RR was great money at one time. Now the RR seems like wages have become stagnant even though they’ve eliminated many jobs from the industry and push to eliminate more. 60-70k jobs are pretty common especially in high cost of living parts of the country. RRR is appealing but does it come out of the 60-70k earnings or does the RR pay into the fund in addition to wages? If I am paying it then I could do ROTH IRA. The risk of injury working RR seems great and I already work in the most hazardous industry in the country. Fighting all weather conditions, trying to stay healthy, having time to grocery shop, sleep, fight fatigue, burn out all seem like major challenges. No one takes about paid vacation. Is paid vacation not offered for years??? No one’s mentioned it and it is a major incentive in most hiring packages from HR departments. Talk of hiring to fire, managers trying to fire you for seeing you do something wrong, the electrified tension in RR union company negotiations, inward facing cameras are a massive turn off to make make a career change to RR.
Overtime is screwed up sometimes especially if you are hired by the NS. if your in yard service 8 hrs constitute a day you are paid for 100 miles for 8 hrs if you work 8 hrs and 10 minutes in the yard you will make 10 minutes overtime not to exceed 12 hrs in that day. That simply says you quit what your doing after 12 hours . but you can make continuous time if the RR DOES not have you in position to put off. If you are in road service that's totally different its dependent upon the mileage you cover on your trip. For example if I was in road service my final terminal was 138 miles . I could only make 54 minutes overtime to be paid for. Its screwed up dont ask me why that's jyst the way it was. Also note if your in yard service and if you put off duty at say 11 pm and your called back into yard service say at 7 am the next morning you turn in for 8 hrs at time and one half for performing your 2 nd tour of duty in a 22 and 1/2 hour period . if you complete that shift and they call you back again in 8 hrs your not in titled to time and a half on that tour but if they call you again after being off only 8 hrs for your next shift you are once again in titled to time and a half. Make sure you talk to your local chairman about this if you are unclear. One big misconception is to fall into a trap thinking you have to put off before you dog. You have to claim they in remarks you put off duty after your 12 hours but your on continuous time because the RR did not have you in position to put off. This is confusing I know but situations occur that the RR won't have you in position to put off in time . you are still on the payroll till you actually put off. Talk to your local chairman. It's f he don't know call your general chairman.
The only jobs that had a per hour rate were yard jobs, all freight jobs were a mileage rate plus penalties. We could work 16 hrs then it went to 12 for the hog law as we called it. The only mileage rate was a dead head paid on some jobs and that was paid only once even if you were called for a week, that applied to mainly yard jobs away from your service zone. On freight jobs, you were put up in a bunk house or hotel and you got a meal rate. Your training, when I hired on, was 2 days and you didn't get paid for it, you then went on the extra broad and were subject to call out anytime day or night for any jobs in the sub. I generally worked 15 days each half and many times showed 17 or 18 jobs worked in a half ( a half was 15 days). Many things changed over the years on pay and mileage.
@@rayspeerly3049 were you around for the BN merger... if so what was that experience like???... from all i heard it was a pretty smooth merger, unlike the penn central merger or even the conrail merger... the conrail merger was a fiasco in the beginning from what i read... i heard in the beginning, guys weren't getting paid, payroll was a MESS... not good

I just got hired by NS for the Toledo terminal I had my background check and physical I’m just waiting to hear back from them. I’m just curious what terminal you come into from Pittsburgh. Is it the downtown terminal or do you go to the west side by the University of Toledo? Trying to figure out where I’d work. Thanks.
Also I was curious if you know locations conductors from Toledo travel to. Do they go to Pittsburg or are those trains only run from conductors and engineers from the Conway terminal?
I've got an issue that I could use some guidance on . I didn't pass my color blindness test because of a problem with the person who gave me the test . Long story short . NS told me that I can take a colorblindness again as long as it isn't the exact same test that I failed . So I have called literally over 130 different eye clinics or doctors in the four state area . And none of them give the tests I need but everyone of them give the test that I failed . I failed the Ishihara 14 plate test. But nobody gives the other Ishihara tests . Any idea on what to do. I am a experienced conductor as well as a licensed engineer . And I have let the medical dept. Know my dilemma and all they tell me is I can't take the one that I failed . I live in southwest Missouri and I know I will pass the test if I can find someone that gives any of the tests that are on the list that NS has . Is there anyone that has had this problem or if anyone has any idea how I can resolve this as quick as possible . Thanks
I turned down cn rail. Seniority gets treated bad but everyone else gets treated like total shit. There's no reason the hours have to be so fucking unpredictable, on call and every changing nights and days. I'm smart enough to know that's no way to live life.

I just got hired by NS for the Toledo terminal I had my background check and physical I’m just waiting to hear back from them. I’m just curious what terminal you come into from Pittsburgh. Is it the downtown terminal or do you go to the west side by the University of Toledo? Trying to figure out where I’d work. Thanks.
Downtown by the Amtrak Station. It's on Emerald Ave.
How long after you submitted your background info and had your physical before the contacted you again?
Also I was curious if you know locations conductors from Toledo travel to. Do they go to Pittsburg or are those trains only run from conductors and engineers from the Conway terminal?

What's the hourly pay for NS
I've got an issue that I could use some guidance on . I didn't pass my color blindness test because of a problem with the person who gave me the test . Long story short . NS told me that I can take a colorblindness again as long as it isn't the exact same test that I failed . So I have called literally over 130 different eye clinics or doctors in the four state area . And none of them give the tests I need but everyone of them give the test that I failed . I failed the Ishihara 14 plate test. But nobody gives the other Ishihara tests . Any idea on what to do. I am a experienced conductor as well as a licensed engineer . And I have let the medical dept. Know my dilemma and all they tell me is I can't take the one that I failed . I live in southwest Missouri and I know I will pass the test if I can find someone that gives any of the tests that are on the list that NS has . Is there anyone that has had this problem or if anyone has any idea how I can resolve this as quick as possible . Thanks

I turned down cn rail. Seniority gets treated bad but everyone else gets treated like total shit. There's no reason the hours have to be so fucking unpredictable, on call and every changing nights and days. I'm smart enough to know that's no way to live life.
