      @@OscillascapeI can confirm the Arctic start is challenging but fun. Though I wouldn't recommend playing as a blackguard there, as the greatest challenge is not starving.
      I have ended up playing with the better ruins mod. Making the Arctic scavenging more varied and fun. As I had to stay on the move to survive.
      Edit: I also made the equatorial distance bigger. So my goal of getting to warmer climates, is more challenging and fun, instead of a small 5 day trip.

    Oh btw, around 12:30 when you prospect for Zinc here is a tip on how to make prospecting easier for you in the future:
    You need to prospect in a cross like pattern. Go the full distance until the pick doesnt detect anymore ore. Mark that location somehow, as a note in your head or physically.
    Then go the other way and do the same. After this, go straight to the midpoint and repeat the process in the other two directions you havent dug into yet. When you did that, you can then go to the midpoint of that second tunnel you just dug and dig either down or up and usually find the ore very quickly.

    • @Oscillascape
      @Oscillascape  Рік тому +6

      Thanks for the tip. Another thing I learned is that you can change the prospecting radius with a command to 2-4 and that helps for more precise searching, like if you need to find silver or gold in a massive quartz deposit. Maybe a bit cheaty? I'll try your method next time!

  • @delphicdescant

    I think it ends up being more efficient to use a high gear ratio on a single helve hammer then to use multiple hammers.
    This is because each hammer carries its own friction overhead cost, which results in a flat reduction of power per hammer.
    So one hammer going ridiculously fast via gear ratios only carries the cost of a single hammer, but gets loads done fast.

    • @Oscillascape
      @Oscillascape  Рік тому +4

      I don't understand the gears and ratios at all yet. I thought there was a maximum speed the hammer can reach. I guess I didn't know it can go turbo fast. I should watch a tutorial next time.

    • @delphicdescant
      @delphicdescant Рік тому +1

      @@Oscillascape I wouldn't bother following tutorials too closely, personally. Usually what I do is to just gear it up by one level (whatever the ratio of teeth between one big gear and one small gear is), and then if I have enough windmills, it goes crazy fast. Sounds like a jackhammer. But I don't think one single full-sail rotor can get it going that fast, and I try to put multiple rotors on, each with full sail. But that would only work if you really got flax growing well, of course.
      So I guess I usually do like (at least) four rotors, all driving one big gear (A) by connecting to its rim. And then an axle from the center of A to the center of another big gear (B). So A drives B. And then a small gear (C) connects to the rim of B, and an axle goes from C to drive the center of one last big gear (D). And then from the rim of D you can drive a hammer, or switch to driving a pulverizer or quern (I put each on a clutch), and then any one of them will go super speed if you have enough wind. I guess I also usually find a high elevation to build it to help with wind speed.
      Anyway, I suspect that's going to be more power-efficient than putting up many separate helve hammers, but I could be wrong. Perhaps multiple hammers are more resource-efficient as a tradeoff? Would have to do the math.

    You actually can sorta kinda cultivate horsetails. I'm not sure why, and it may have changed since I last played, but setting up an empty field of tilled soil seems to make them grow naturally a lot more frequently.

    • @Oscillascape
      @Oscillascape  Рік тому +4

      Yes, I noticed that in my recent Arctic playthrough. They were growing on tiled soil, although fairly rarely, but if you set a gigantic field of tiled soil, I imagine you can grow some at reasonable rate.

  • @theguyfromsaturn
    @theguyfromsaturn 2 місяці тому +1

    FYI, you can cultivate horsetail in a way. Just hoe a large area. You don't need to irrigate, and it can be low fertility soil. Trim off the grass that grows to make more blocks available for horsetail. It's amazing. Horsetail farm right at home.

    • @Oscillascape

    If I can give one lil tip that I’ve noticed would help your vids a lot, you don’t have to read what I say next if you don’t want the tips
    Try to explain what your saying more, use examples, images or videos while explaining what and how stuff works so that stuff makes more sense, vintage story is a pretty niche game and you’ll be able to reach a significantly larger audience if you explain why you do things a little more in depth.
    Like explaining why your getting bismuth and how it’s the easiest bronze alloy material to get and you need bronze to get iron
    When you talked about the locust put a image in showing what it looks like with like a jpg pop in or a clip so that way the viewer knows how scary it is and why you want to avoid it.
    Thing like this makes the video a lot more enjoyable and easier to consume, what I found is whenever you can try to explain things as if the viewer knows nothing of the game or how things work, don’t leave things up to interpretation cause it’ll make people more likely to be confused and want to click off the video
    I do love this video and I play vintage story a lot so i knew what you were doing but looking at the video as someone who doesn’t know anything it would be a little harder to understand

    • @Oscillascape
      @Oscillascape  Рік тому +1

      Makes sense. It's not intended to be a let's play or a tutorial and is more geared towards players that have some familiarity with the game. But I get your point and you probably right. It was already encroaching on an hour long and if I started adding explanations, it would have been 30 minutes longer and I think an hour is about my sanity limit for a video.

      @@Oscillascape Yeah, I just use fences. It's just wood, and honestly I'm new to the game, but I play a ton of different games so I already had a strategy planned. However, can confirm Drifters can spawn in your house during a Temporal Storm even with full torch coverage. Luckily, I designed the house to release smoke similar to Valheim, so the second floor, dedicated to fighting, had a 3-3 hole in the floor to let the smoke out from the central fire on the first floor. I wasn't sure how the fire and smoke mechanics worked when I first built the house, but it worked out because the house is 7-by-7, so it was easy to stab and shoot through that opening to kill the Corrupted Drifter on the first floor.
      He even tried hiding in the corner, but couldn't escape the impromptu murder hole. Sadly, I think I accidentally discovered the meta ON MY FIRST HOUSE. Doesn't save me from ninja bear though...

I'm sure that it is a personal preference of mine but the way you narrate somehow makes me nervous haha. It is this monotone style where every sentence end with your voice going down a bit, while narrating it doesn't seem to be wrong at all but when it is all cut together and every sentence sounds the same.
