- If you’ve played guitar for any amount of time, you’ve probably gathered that strumming is a pretty important piece of the puzzle - the guitar is considered a rhythm instrument after all. So to help you navigate these daunting rhythmic waters, we’ve created a guide to help you play ten of the most popular strumming patterns on the guitar.
Throughout this guitar lesson, Kent and Ayla will guide you through increasingly challenging strumming patterns that span various genres and styles. We’ll start things off nice and easy, so you can get the core of the technique down, and move our way down to a few busier patterns that can really add some flair to your playing. We’ve also added a popular song that uses each strumming pattern, so they’re even easier to wrap your head around. Go grab your guitar and let’s get to it!

About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer, since the early age of 14. After only been playing for two years, her first UA-cam video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

Brilliant, lots of people produce videos of songs on UA-cam and say use this pattern or that without showing the timing. That is crucial for me. Thanks
Sami Ghawi rocks. He's my number 2 favorite guitar teacher; right behind the legend, Ayla Tesler-Mabe.
You two did a really great job on this lesson. I'm an older intermediate that's always want to improve. Thank you both
Showing the patterns in a song is so helpful and gives us something to practice with instead of just doing the motion. Great video
Ayla, you've been holding out on us.
So very nice to hear your singing voice! We'll be expecting more... please.
Will that be a swedish massage?
Great video guys. I'm a guitarist and its great to focus in on the tempo.
Great video really help as a newbie I started with picking and found strumming difficult and this helps a lot, a must practice
Beautiful color scheme of your guitar.
Top 10 mustache’ of all time 😎
😜
Really really really digging your videos you've been releasing lately! 🥰❤️
This video is best understood once the concept of playing on / off the beat is clear. Thanks for the great video!
Awesome! Just what I was looking for! Thank you soooo much!
Fantastic video! Thank You, Regards, David
Thanks again, this was so helpful!
Fantastic video! Thank you guys!!
nice work 💕 love it! 💕 thanks for sharing
Fantastic; nice and comprehensive!
Super good class!
this was super helpful! thank u so much.
Wonderful video! I enjoyed it so much
Thank you, this is very helpful.
All musical are great lessons !!
Ayla is absolutely adorable. Totally subbed this channel because of her personality, so fun and chill!
So excited to learn how to mute with the fret hand for a percussive sound! Have you covered strum hand palm muting? I really struggle with this…thanks!
Very cool. Thank you.
great video thank you so much.
Thank you!!
Miss Ayla reminds me of elementary school orchestra teacher, very chill, soft spoken person and very easy to understand.
Very helpful
very good. thank you! ❤️❤️ only i wish you also hum the tune while showing the rhythm application
Thanks ☺️
Enlightening 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Total beginner here but what a good lesson! Also with some examples 😁 Subscribed and thank you!
Loved the teaching ❤️🙏🏻. From basic strumming till advanced, explained so well 👌 step-by-step 👌. Very calm & polite when you teach. Feels very relaxed listening to your teaching 😊.
Good job both of you ❤️👌
Awesome!🎉
Geweldig! Voor het eerst dat ik je hoorde zingen! Leuk!
That last strumming pattern you said is for funk is also a disco rhythm. My guitar teacher taught me that disco was based on the 16th note. You constantly play 16th notes and you mute some of those notes by lifting your chord hand to give it a disco groove.
Excellent
Great!!!
SICK!!🤘
Wow 👌 I love it
Really good guys, I prefer the 1 & or 1 e & a. Type language as it helps me feel where I am within each beat more easily. If that makes any sense 😊
Thank you
Very Cool
I love it.
That strum sounds like wonder something🤔🎶❤ GREAT 👌
I've been trying to get Long Train Running working, it was a little trickier than I expected
Thanks for the lesson! Just one little note, all the great reggae players always strum down and not up
Seriously Ayla, you have a guitar teacher? You already have it!
love the regge
Thanks. Have watched many of your Videos. Any chance, give us a simple 1 page of lesson. Like strumming patterns, a great one to do. Have seen them, Just D+ U. It's a Great practice sheet. Plus Songs u do. Please!! Rarely have my guitar when I come up on a good one( all r good) Thanks
Nice to meet you Miss and sir
Nice
You mean you guys haven't noticed the lady's bewitching smile 🥰
Sounds like WONDER WALL💕💖🎸🎶🙋
I love hearing the smack ,so going to have to play it xxx
As a "non-dominant hand strummer" I doubt I'll ever get to that level in patterns no matter how much I practice 😅😅 so I'm going for the "Down-Up-Smack-Up" pattern, which is seriously challenging enough already haha, ..my hand keep wanna add an extra down in the end or replace the up with it.. heh...
You mentioned the strumming pattern course of your teacher Sami? not sure on spelling, sorry, where can i find access to that? thankyou
I was just thinking that lol...down down up down...whaaat.... I noticed I play that song a little different haha. (Wonderwall)
Thanks for the video, but since this doesn’t cover ALL of the strumming patterns, what if the song is ANOTHER strumming pattern?
Are these the most COMMON ones? How do I figure out other ones, especially if the pattern changes in the song? Thanks
My friend really leaned back while playing that reggae rhythm. Sad thing is he was in terrace sitting on the edge of wall 🥴
The Bo Diddley rhythm also change identity and it became a clave now?
Good job the 10 most popular, salam from karya anak bngsa
Although I don’t mind the down, down, up down terminology.
I’ve become a fan of the 1 e and ah, terminology.
En cada uno de los acordes reputen lo mismo :" es el mejor acorde de todos los tiempos!!lo toco todo el rato con todas las canciones!"😅se hace pesado...
Pero bien explicado , resumido y con canciones👍
The Wonderwall strumming only seems elaborate because you’ve taken it out of the context of the chords. Focused on the actual chord changes, it’s simple. Good video.
Leave the Strum pattern names Written! I'm a Foreigner and have trouble understanding names I've never heard. Excelent Video!
I think they just made the names up
Hi, what model is that Taylor?
Same as Eagles but with fingerpicking.
i wish for the more complex strumming patterns that you would go thru it at speed before jumping straight into the song - it's difficult to make the transition from half to full speed while also trying to keep track of the chords. it feels like there's a step missing and it's really frustrating rolling the same 5 second loop back bc you also didn't repeat it like you said :/
What do I do when I am stuck on one pattern and can’t break the habit? I’ll start a different and I always end up on DDUUDU. Ugh. Thanks 😊
❤❤❤❤
❤
Please show patterns on the screen! It's so hard to follow without the visual picture of the up/down movement!
Sweet stash bro
Mario Bros knows how to play guitar!
IMHO, for Faith, the pattern should be :
D . . U . . D . . U D . D . X X
1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
That's how it fits if you keep your strumming hand moving up and down through the beat.
In fact she does play it like that at the start (10:16), but still missing the subtle UD.
Nice video but what happened not having Metallica and metal type strumming?
Ok so you had me on down up up up down down up up up down up down....ermm up up erm down up. 🤭
📍 No way, gonna recall.. lol Tks
I'd like to see a competition between Ms. Tesler-Mabe and the Japanese guitarist Saki to determine the champ of simultaneous smiling and talking. I think Saki might have the advantage, as she doesn't move her jaw while speaking but I'd still like to view the contest.
🤣
Aylaaaaaa , i know how to play guitar cause of you 🎸🌈🌈🙏 life fcking changed after that . Thanks ,
Ps. This video helps even more ,
That stash is so perfect it looks fake.
Wow I accidentally discovered some of this by just playing😂
The hardest thing for me is to mute the G chord. The explanation to do it is missing....
Same problem at ua-cam.com/video/NPy_rLNrRrU/v-deo.html how do I mute the D chord (the D string of that D chord)
😎😎😎
Hay Girl friend 🎶🎸
good teachers👩🏫👩🏫👩🏫👩🏫
How can you make a video about the most popular strumming patterns of all time and not do a shuffle or anything blues related?
Who is this man? What are his intentions? Ah jokes. Mkay I dont trust the stash. Excellent lesson as always.
Let's give them something to talk about. Proud Mary. It's a hard rains gonna fall.dylan and donaven teach tempo.light foot,Paul Simon.
The comment makes no sense yet two people have given it a 'thumbs up'. WTF?
Ayla is so damn pretty omg
WONDAHWAHHHHLLLLLL baby
You are so cool, I hope you make it, whatever you want to do.
@@dhwhwhshhshwwy946 Thanks, you too... but I have a feeling you weren't being serious, oh well.
@@MedalionDS9 I'm serious, I didn't realize that what I said might come across as sarcastic.
Whats next “top 5 strings of all time?”
When my curriculum sports and games and having football shoes at primary 🏫 and secondary 🏫 academic performance UPSR ( 2004 ) 1C,4B and PMR ( 2007) 4C,3B after I finished my biggest SPM ( 2009) I will not going back with my mother at her Small towns liked LAWAS . Man I've been playing fingerstyle for over 15 years. And I mean Tommy Emmanuel style, not the easy stuff. It kinda feels strange to watch an absolute beginner video now 😂
Where's good old shuffle?????
….because Maaaaaaabbbeeeeee….
exciting! = )
Small question: why the small guitars? Lol.
Good lesson, shame it's out of sync.
