Thieves steal high-voltage Tesla Supercharger cables from Montrose charging station
Вставка

- Imagine pulling into the gas station only to find out that someone cut all of the hoses attached to the pumps. That’s the equivalent of what happened at a Houston-area electric vehicle charging station over the weekend.
He just told everyone it's safe to do it. WTF
I know, lmfao. This is going to get worse now that it's exposed.
It is safe to take them but someone is going to be watching
Yep. Now it's going to be open season. Longer term answer is eliminating the cable with wireless charging instead. Not as efficient, but better than no charge at all.
They do it here in California. And the cut it from ground lines, lampposts, wherever there's metal. It doesn't matter. I believe these guys are electricians.
Actually, it's been happening for a while in other areas. There is a new video out of the UK from last year. I've seen another of it being a massive problem in the Seattle area. There have been Darwin awards for quite a while of people trying to steal HV power lines.
And you just told everybody how to steal them.
I honestly didn’t know you could steal these until now, and now I know how
I already knew those cables were not hot when disconnected, they didn't spill any secrets to the learned.
Blue print
lol this is going to replace stealing catalytic converters
Doubt it, less money to be made, way more dangerous, and these places get a lot of traffic so way more likely to be caught.
Nah, they'll find a better way to prevent this.
@@edouglasroche lol thieves also cut cats in parking lots with lot of traffic too and they have to crawl under a vehicle. The charger is already with their grasp
@@edouglasrochein the middle of the night Tesla chargers are empty and this is not dangerous at all because the cables are not live if they are not hooked up to a car
Good!
This is why we can’t have nice things
It's one reason nice things keep getting more expensive
😂teslas aren't nice things
@@whiteGIANT510 Yes, Teslas are nice things and electric cars by produced by other manufacturers are nice things. I hate going to the gas station and smelling like gas after I fill my car and I also hate how much gas costs and how much the price changes for gasoline because it's a holiday, political reasons, other stuff. Electric charging is stable, I can do it at home. Electric cars are nice things. Gas cars used to be nice things but now they are just necessary things because other alternatives are still too expensive for others. Including me. I don't have an electric car.... YET! I will, ASAP.
Elon Musk has made a deal with China so that's about to change for the worse.
Don't worry.... HPD is working with other agencies paying themselves overtime to run a seatbelt campaign to keep everyone safe.
I used to work in Hayward, California, this happened all the time. It was the homeless population stealing the copper. EV chargers are poorly designed, the customer should provide the cable and plug it into the charger.
Not just the homeless stealing those cables. They are always scapegoated. People that are stealing the AT&T phone lines for copper are organized. Having open borders have been horrible for the USA. We have no idea who is in the country anymore. And there are way too many poor people from other countries flocking here. Stealing is a combination of problems.
Customer providing a cable capable of 200kW or more. No way.
@@snakedog77 Phone lines are buried and hardly have any copper. It's a single copper strand.
It wasn't too long ago that I saw a meme about "Wait til the addicts find out how much copper is in a Tesla charger" and now, that prediction comes true.
Copper and drugs! That’s why! Not anti EV movement.
All the EV chargers are at zero volts when not in use. It is a hilariously obvious source of copper.
Zero current. The volts are still there.
@@Look_What_You_Didno zero volts. There are two communication pins inside the charging port. When the car is communicating with the charger a electrical contractor will open and supply the voltage to the car. No communication = zero volts
And if they charge it up, the thieves family will sue Tesla for being unsafe.
$5 in scrap copper is not worth the effort or the risk.
They aren't stealing them for any copper, it's a political statement.
It’s an x employee that just got laid off😂
Anti-Ev? Naw someone trying to get high.
Yeah homeboy has too much imagination. It's copper thieves and they DGAF about EV or gas. They want money. It's like blaming the catalytic converter thefts on the EV movement.
Those layoffs are going to payoff
one way , or another.
Sounds like a good cash cow for thieves instead of catalytic converters. 😂
Much easier than climbing under a car with a saw
Way more catalytic converters to steal than these.
Lmao. This is the beginning.
If they left one cable then there was probably someone plugged in to that cable, and considering the cars are full of cameras that are recording, I hope someone was on video.
So not the entire super charging team has been laid off as reported.
They're rehiring some layoffs
Just the R&D team and some have already been rehired. All the maintenance and installation remain. All the factory workers in upstate NY where the Superchargers are manufactured remain. Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) reigns supreme in modern mainstream media. It's all about the clicks...
@@longmuskox4194I see an awful lot of Teslas parked at abandoned malls.
@@longmuskox4194 idc what they say as long as I can use the volatility in the stock price to make money 🤑
I was just listening to a report about how the price of copper is skyrocketing due to the demand that making EV cars is creating.
It has spiked to 10 bucks a pound in May.
😂great, just let everyone know that they can do it
Third world country conditions
With electric cars? 😂
@@MisterCharleyno, theft and destruction of public and private property for quick cash.
Its safe to do. Thanks Kprc
Some of those people from California or illegals. Either way prosecute the fullest limit of the law.
Copper is the new gold.
There was a guy always tooling around on a moped in my hometown called “the one-armed bandit”. He got his nickname from trying to steal copper from a live electrical transformer station. The resulting bolt when he made contact blew his arm off. He was a cautionary tale on wheels.
I think this could be a reason Elon fired his supercharger department. It looks like the cost of charging is going to go up too.
So they'll all be replaced by Monday evening.....and gone again by Tuesday morning. 🤭
100% safe! 24/7.
As much as I do not like ev's, I hate copper wire thieves!
Some folks will do anything for money EXCEPT work.
They are working and making a lot more per hour than most. How long does it take to cut off a cable. Let's say two minutes which would be really slow. And they get $25 per cable. Seems like $750 an hour to me.
I read where stealing public EV charging cables has been happening in the UK for quite a while. The sad part is, frequent use of Superchargers is bad for the batteries. A slower charge at home is better for the health of the batteries. Those that rely on Superchargers are doing damage to the most expensive component of their car.
And when the battery goes bad its thrown to the dump and a child has to work at a lithium mine in africa to make another battery so the cicle can keep going
@@honja6528 Completely re-cycleable....you have bad info....
@@imtheonevanhalen1557 recycling is expensive, creates toxic compounds, and can catch fire up for days, easy to say that it's not worth it for recycling or people working to recycle batteries compared to combustion engines
Scrappers!
And the thing is they can literally keep doing that, and they will have to perpetually repair them. 2:00 And they will all be replaced by monday evening.... And then........... big brain stuff here.
10 to 1 it was a Tesla owner who was charging his car and suddenly it dawned on him to steal the cables while he was at it.
Tesla has that data. How stupid would that person be?
@@longmuskox4194
They bought a tesla.
@@1985cjjeeper Ignorance is bliss.
@@1985cjjeeperyour very smart obviously 🫤 if they needed to use the charger in the first place why would the destroy something they needed? You must be tweaking.
@@Bigpopp1
See my previous post.
Perhaps this is why the supercharger group was fired, the stupidity of putting superchargers in unsupervised areas. No one has put gas pumps in back areas where no one is around.
500 dc volts is not a measurement of power.
But they are doing layoffs, despite having 25 Billion of cash on hand. And now they wont even be building more superchargers, this is highly suspicious
Priceless Well, at least they left, ONE 😂
Ikr, how thoughtful of them, like:
"Hey guys, my uncle's gotta get a charge here tomorrow. Leave one up for my man"
So you think ta is okay to damage this chargers?
Plot twist, maybe the vandal did that while waiting for their EV to charge.
This is why each car should have a cable like a USB wire. All the fittings SHOULD be the SAME when plugging into the charger. What ever plug that plugs into the car wont matter.
There is NO way the scrapyards do not know that sort of cabling is stolen.
They're probably dumb enough to leave the plug on them
Remove and discard the insulation.
The amount of copper in one cable really isn’t that much. Peeps aren’t really that smart are they?
5min work for $200 is not bad.
NO STOCKERS HERES.
I like how the one guy thinks it’s some one who hates electric cars,
Lol. Cash is worthless thanks to the American voter. You gotta have something worth trade.
Sad part is, there's not even that much copper in there, there's tons of rubber insulation too.
With copper spiking at 10 dollars a pound in May, it's worth the trouble.
As high tech as EVs are they did not think to have surveillance cameras at a site with expensive charging equipment.
agree. charging stations are magnets for thieves.
They will have another thing to steal.
news says its about stealing copper when there's no talk about the charging team getting laid off
That’s because it doesn’t go with the narrative of the liberal media that bidenomics indeed isn’t working. However I’ve seen UA-cam videos of the layoffs being covered left and right.
Superchargers in out of the way places was an invitation to this kind of theft. As Bob Dylan wrote more than 50 years ago the pump don’t work because the vandals took the handles.
For all the dunces that think there is not much copper, the supercharger at 500 volts can supply about 200000 watts to the EV or 400 amps. Since losses are the square or current times the resistance of the wire, that power wire has to be HUGE or the cable would just burn up. I used double 2/0 gauge wiring to feed my RV inverter with 400 amps.
It only takes common sense to realize there’s no power in them until you turn it on 😂😂😂
now I know it is safe to cut those cables, thanks KPRC.
This is probably the same knucklehead thieves that were stealing Challengers and chargers. Now they found a new past time to dwell on.
"500 volts of DC electricity enough to power over three average American homes". Lol. Somebody doesn't know what he's talking about
The irony is that they just fired the supercharger team
This location saved me one late night in Houston. Relatively thinking - Houston doesn’t really have that many Super Chargers. Sad to say, but they should all have camera surveillance.
Wham Bam Teslacam.....
No it isn't about anti EV . In Europe this has been going on for a while, it's all about the copper.
If you're from California, welcome...sort of. However, if you're expecting more EV charging stations, I wouldn't hold your breath.
Another reason why green energy electric is the smart move
What ever happens to nikola teslas wireless power transmission
Ask Mr. J.P. Morgan 😂
Didn’t Nikola ceo go to prison?
It is called microwave energy. You likely have one in your kitchen.
Neil deGrasse Tyson explained long distance transfer of energy: basically if the energy (in this case power as energy per unit time) transferred through a unit of space to power the appliance/item is enough to kill you, then passing through that space is enough to kill you. He was referring to powering a mere 60W 240V light globe.
At the voltages used to charge a Tesla, passing through said space for a second would destroy virtually all living cells.
Lmfao they getting that copper that scrap value is worth some & dude said get a life you don't have one either bro you sitting there for 45+ mins waiting for a car to charge up 🤣🤣
Interesting timing, doesn’t look suspicious at all
That’s gonna be “Shockingly” expensive
Layoffs in Austin at Tesla plant, jumper cables for charging stations stolen in Houston. Hmm?
They couldn't care less about whether or not EVS exist they stole it for the copper wire. Anybody with a lick of sense knows there's no power on those if it's not plugged into the car. And people have been known to steal wires that were alive you just use insulated cutters to cut it.
Well..., it looks like Tesla will increase the price to cover the cost of repairs.
Just imagine if this happened to all the Houston charging cables at the same time 😂
*Just buy a petroleum-powered vehicle and STOP playing CAPTAIN PLANET!*
That sucks. Dollars to doughnuts it was just a thief and not an anti ev person.
Its the copper they are after. They should use fiber optic cables
The thefts aren’t anti-EV, nobody in their right minds wants an Ev. Copper is $4.59 a pound and when you don’t have a decent job……..
3.00 per pound for scrap copper. Two of those cables will buy a pack of cigarettes.
They got the charging cables in Louetta rd & 249 as well
Who didn't see an easily to cut copper wire being stolen then melted down into copper bars and sold for meth
At least they left one. Lol 😆
Everyone should bring their own cable
Yeah man it's totally the "anti-EV crowd" and not GANG SCRAP seeing a golden opportunity. Was there any surveillance cameras present? How much would the scrap from that many chargers sell for? Does the high fence around the property help shield scrappers from being seen cutting the wires? I just hate the jump to conclusions that it's immediately political when there's many reasons why it might not be as well.
Its like $4 of copper at most. These use thin wires and immersion cooling to stay flexible. As for "Jump to conclusion" the Super charger in Ames was hit by a Truck its first week. The guy admitted to foing it intentionally. Iced is a term used when a gas car parks in an EV charger. Some POS rolled coal on my wife driving my son to school.
The worst par about this is, every EV owner I know in Iowa is conservative but just trying to save money and waste less time servicing our cars... while also having ungodly performance. Imagine a lawn mowers gas vs electric, and the gas guy pouring oil on your lawn for buying the low maintenance option. Basically the same thing.
@@syspowertools3372 We can agree to disagree until more proof comes I guess. Coulda easily been vandalism, political motive, or scrap. Nobody knows
Not much copper in on of those cables. Strip apart a usb cable, mostly all plastic and shielding.
Lets see if your news story sets a precedent.
I thought they were the new wireless charging stations...
@tommkc-they are now!🤣🤣
What is the news selling?
I'm surprised they did'nt have any security cameras watching the charging stations.
They already steal speed cameras in DC.
Yet another reason why electric cars will NEVER come to fruition.
Like we didn't expect this .... let's all stop while we're ahead .. waste of time ...... no electric vehicles !!!!! Pure stupidy
Will now spread across the country..
Tesla needs to make the charging cables LIVE !.
tesla needs to start using toyota hybrid powertrains and say fvck pure EV
Toyota margins are 2% Tesla's are 17.1%.
Toyota sells over 10 million cars per year but are rapidly declining, Tesla sells 1.8 million per year and growing. Tesla sold 1/6 as many cars but made more money on car sales, and every other aspect of their business is profitable. Battery Storage had margins of 27% and grew over 200% last year.
Then how will the cars be charged once they're plugged in?
I love my gas vehicle
an old crime that's gentrified
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😊
i assume there were security cameras.
Probably the team that just got laid off from tesla
Hate for EVs? Nope - love of $$$
They will get more cutting closer to the terminal.
Could be also a former disgruntled employee that was recently laid off.
You know who doesn't have this problem....? Gas cars. Funny they actually think it's someone that just doesn't like EVs. 😊
What the hell is wrong with people?
Somebody who's stock holding just took a dive decided to go out and get some compensation
Probably those Tesla charger employees who were just laid off.
It was only a matter of time.
This kind of shenanigans always seems to happen in the world richest country because the top one percent controls 80% of the wealth. The rest is left fighting for scrap (metal). Something is fundamentally wrong with how the richest country is run.
Dusty smh 🤦🏾 broke people
Thick copper wire just sitting there for the taking, those 18 cables netted someone a tidy sum for little work. Say 3 pounds a piece at $4 a pound that's over $200 right there.
Broke boy thoughts ^
