  • As one of the automotive industry's long-standing outliers, Mazda is once again bucking current trends by developing a new, large-capacity six-cylinder diesel engine for its flagship CX-60 SUV, albeit one using mild-hybrid technology to enhance efficiency. So, after a disappointing debut in plug-in hybrid guise, can the Mazda CX-60 redeem itself with a new diesel engine?

Thanks for your comprehensive review. Looking forward to checking out the diesel CX60 when it arrives in Australia later this year. Well done Mazda for daring to keep to your design and engineering philosophy!

Having owned the PHEV, and now traded it for the AWD Diesel, I can confirm that the Diesel is the much better car. I've been seeing 60MPG on motorway and 36-38mpg around town, and the engine is still breaking in so this will get better. Suspension is much better without the underslung weight. I made a mistake the PHEV but I havent with the Diesel.

Man, I would so buy a Diesel in the US. Wife has a DuraMax 1500 (GMC Sierra). That thing gets 30 MPG easy, I think highest trip computer showed was 35 on the highway. Diesels are amazing.

I agree. I have an Ecodiesel and RAM is phasing them out. My engine totaled at 60,000 and lucky it was in warranty. Would love this Mazda or Duramax on next purchase.

I'd have a straight 6 diesel over a 4 pot petrol any day 😁 The low rpm, lazy power delivery can really suite bigger cars in my opinion. Also love that sound at 8:17

Hmmm... I've been rocking my fully-specced PHEV Takumi for about 6 weeks, and other than having ordered the Koni Adaptive dampers I'm pleased as punch. Your video has got me thinking though, having been a Diesel driver for years, but I was drawn by the 330-odd BHP and 500 Nm of torque, plus I'm enjoying the 4.2 litres/100 Km and 20 kW/h/100 Km economy over 2100 Km though. Might ask my dealer for a go in the Diesel for comparison purposes...

@@fedolfs UPDATE: I had the part numbers from a different forum, but the page seems to have disappeared when I click back on the link- I pick my car up tomorrow and will ask my garage for the part numbers for you, you can probably order them from any reputable aftermarket dealer. Also be aware that having them fitted will void the warranty on the suspension/steering, confirmed by my Mazda dealer. It may vary in other countries, but "caveat emptor" and all that...

@@dot7107 not a chance......don't be taking WLTP estimates as gospel.
Nobby recently done a video of a trip to Cork and back in a MachE long range. If anything, it highlighted the absolute fraud in these range estimates.
Also, why should I have to spend circa 70k to get a vehicle to meet my needs.
My €50k Superb can "easily" travel 1200kms on one tank...in luxury/comfort without having to worry about what where always normal creature comforts in a car......you know, like heating/climate control.....window wipers and anything else that might be a draw on the precious battery level.
We are never going to agree by the looks of it.
The only models of EV with anything near the real world range I need are premium brand apex models costing well into 6 figures.

If you want to drive away in a PHEV CX60 fully loaded you'll have to part with at least 72 GRAND. I'm being serious and it's by no means perfect, too heavy and it's just quite numb to drive. The petrol or diesel is the way to go if you really want to go for the CX60, but I imagine you're going lighten your wallet by an extra few grand.
