I thought his charge attack was inconsistent bullshit until i tried standing still and then rolling to the right at the last second. Now it’s one of my favourite attacks from the whole game, i feel like a matador waiting for the bull just to dodge at the last moment and i can get it extremely consistently. Gaius truly is one of the most un justifyingly over hated bosses of all souls games. Although the damage of the attack is inconsistent when you fail to dodge it, sometimes it one-shots me, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve been fighting Ludwig recently and he has the same issue on his phase one charge attack.
Right? It IS entirely dodgeable, consistently, if you just figure out how to do it, and it feels so fucking good doing it, especially after struggling with the figuring it out part. That's a classic feeling of gaming and one of the reasons I love it so much.

Sure he doesn't have his own music (Commander Niall music), but dang I thought it was a bad boss in my 1st time, but I got to him again, he's so fun & satisfying to fight against, his charge attack hitbox should be adjusted a bit, but everything else is perfect! I'm not kidding.
I hope i have the same reaction the second time. The first time Gaius just pissed me off. I fought him and Metyr back to back and the experience wasn't pleasant.

He’s not bad, but aside from the charge hitbox and the lack of music… - He has very few moves, he’s kinda simple. - Almost every move is best countered by rolling right and in, which is kinda boring. - He’s kinda just there, lacks build up and presentation.
I really like this boss. Also the cinematic aspect of “my boar will pierce the heavens” is so delightfully hilarious and cool at the same time in a way only From games are. Maybe it’s the Pink Floyd fan in me but I can’t not love a flying pig
6:21 In my first playthrough I didn't like this boss because I had a misunderstanding. I wrongly assumed that it's futile to chase after Gaius and close the distance because my running attacks kept missing as he kept escaping. So I relied on a mix of Storm Blade and melee attacks to beat him (which was descently fun, but I was hoping for a pure melee fight). Later I learned that it's fairly easy to keep engaging melee, just not with a running attack. Gotta keep running until we're up in his face before we can attack again. Now that I know this I might enjoy him more in my next playthrough.
imo the most overhated boss in the game. sure the charge sucks with how precise you have to be, but besides it he is pretty fun and his 2:53 combo punishes bad direction rolling while being super consistent. Definitelly not worst boss in the dlc (since metyr exist)

I still think Loretta is still the best mounted enemy in the game, and a great boss overall. But Gaius is a decent boss overall, just outshined by more interesting bosses. Never understood why people struggled that much with him, his moveset is good saved for that stupid charge attack, and even then you can outrun it via Torrent.

I find him to be terribly annoying and lame honestly 😕 I guess I was just expecting way more with the entire area and the sleep and the beautiful arena. He’s Goofy and has one (really really damn) cool attack the horse charge Guillotine but other than he’s so lame! His phase transition could have been cool but it’s just Ghost flame that doesn’t look like ghost flame? Why? It doesn’t alter the fight, just more attacks that don’t fit in. I’m sorry I’m not here to hate and devalidate your opinion. That was just my position at the moment. I want to love this boss like you do, I want to agree with you so please tell me what it is that catches you so I may have fun the next time I fight him

I'm going to take my time here to explain why I think he works perfectly well. This is all subjective so yeah. Ive beaten him over 100 times at this point, including challenges like RL1 +0 blessing etc. Im practicing for no roll ( hes actually very fun on no roll ) And ive never gotten bored of him. Skip a paragraph if you dont care about lore lmao Anyway as for asthetics, I think they absolutely nailed where they were going for. From a lore and visual design perspective its extremely cool and unique, its also a nice reflection of St Trina's character. Youre basically fighting a hump of dead meat that was brought to life by St Trina. This is also why he uses ghostflame. He looks goofy, got a horse and those blue googly eyes. He is an omage to radahn, because he is Miquella's protector. PK's silly entrance to the fight adds a lot to his character too, hes just a goofy guy that swears to protect St Trina. Its awesome and wholesome. The music and blue purple color sceme makes it feel like youre in a dream of some kind, which reflects back to St Trina's character. The OST is very calming too As for the moveset, all of his attacks are so fluid and satisfying to dodge. There is also a lot mid combo openings, jumpable moves and strafing tricks. Some really nice skill expression. One of his phase 2 blueflame moves acts as a combo starter, so you have to really stay on your toes. You could say the moveset is very primitive and that phase 2 doesnt add much. It would maybe have been nice if he had 2 or 3 more blueflame moves, or another combo. But at the same time, Im really glad they didnt do this. In fact, he has a forth blueflame attack that has been cut in the release version of the dlc. Not every boss needs to have 30 flashy moves and a whole new moveset for phase 2. I think they meant it to be a simple, relaxing but memorable fight that is also a cool lore moment. The blueflame attacks fit in his moveset well and I really appreciate it for what its trying to do. Sometimes, less is more
This man is the most confusing candidate to compain about. Long and deliberate tells, consistent tempo, long recovery, he has pretty much everything they are asking for. The fight feels like a glorified darconic tree sentinel The only thing that i could imagine being remotely problemetic even to scrubs are a bunch of phase two knowledge checks and maybe his charge. Fking margit had more meat than that to his movelist
I wont think that there is an Elden Ring Boss as terrible as Bed of Chaos. Only Boss that made The devs make an apology btw, pure insanity. I started to like this Boss more over time, which is something I look foward.

It's because of his trample attack, which has a very very unforgiving hitbox. People didn't know that they can manipulate Gaius into never doing the trample attack (neither did I).

I mean, exploiting torrents getting off s is just that an exploit, and his charge can't be consistently dodged otherwise without some special skill, I actually like the fight but criticism can be fair and I feel like lupine sometimes goes in the opposite direction of defending clear issues like he literally called a glitch where enemy stops moving a graphic card issue

He was really frustrating me while i was learning his moveset but once i figured out the flailing combo, it was all over. Didn't bother with hitless but managed to finish without flask. Took an hour tops. An hour to realize that all the whining was coming from people who'd freaked out after their third attempt.

The charge attack can randomly double or in rare cases triple hit, and apparently the boss is just immune to damage during the charge so spell users are just out of luck. I liked this boss on release and thought he'd be great if the charge attack always single hit, and though unique music would be nice the commander theme fits fine. He sucks in coop though because you're just having fun and then all of the sudden you or one of the other players get one shot out of nowhere because you don't fully understand this one attack.
I think (correct me if i'm wrong) that the amount of times you get hit by the charge is dependent upon your poise. If you have low poise then you will get knocked down by the attack and only get hit once, but if your poise is too high, you don't get knocked down.

I've heard a lot of people just hate him for being a "mounted" boss and they dislike those. Sure, the Tree Sentinel and DTS are mid, and the Night's Cavalry is annoying to chase but this boss is just a normal boss. Most of his attacks are in melee, the combos feel pretty fair and he only has two moves that force you o chase him. I'm convinced that if he was just a unique big knight with some gravity magic but otherwise remain the same in terms of moves and hitboxes he would be a pretty decent boss for most people. I remember Gino ranking him pretty high when he finished the DLC and lots of people in the chat were saying that the hitboxes were bullshit, and Gino said that they seemed pretty fair to him. Sure, the charge is tight, but not worse than many other moves in the game from beloved bosses. The only thing I would say is bad about the boss is that you cant hit it while he charges at you.
Appreciate the medium roll. It drives a point that's self evident, which I don't think is applicable to light roll in the same way. I'm not a "what an overhated boss!" guy, but at some point complaining about stuff is just boring af. Plus, I like Fire Giant and Metyr so I tend to keep my mouth shut on boss "quality" lmao
I think the most annoying thing about this boss is just that both the charge and the kick he does when you’re right behind him can double hit you and one shot you pretty often. Obvs the answer there is just don’t get hit but unless you are a hitless runner that shit gets kind of obnoxious when you just wanna beat the boss and then one attack fucks your whole run at 60 vigor with a good amount of scadutree levels too. Not a huge deal though and hardly the only boss to have a double hit problem, just gets on my nerves personally.
Finally someone who doesn’t let go of scrub rage and says Commander Gaius is the worst boss in the entire game (disregarding stuff like Godskin Duo, Esgar, Wormface…) and instead plays the game. At least in souls games, you got my respect.
I struggled with Gaius a lot, barely found any openings on foot and he had so much hp (Scadu Level 8). Also didn’t get stancebreaks consistently and when he did that big combo I always died so I Wave of golded him. Kinda hated the Boss Second time I did him on horse with a really strong poison build (Scadu Level 9). This was fun as hell but also really difficult cause you know when I got hit once he just true combod me to death most of the time. Got him in a really lucky try after three hours. I put him in S Tier after that cause he’s the only boss in the dlc (except PCR) That still felt difficult. So not gonna lie you saying he’s „So fucking easy“ kinda hurt
Thats not a glitch. it has been in the game since release and is used by most people for fire giant. If it was a glitch it would have been patched out by now

gaius is great, i used raptors for the charge but I do wish it were easier to dodge regularly

I think the most annoying thing about this boss is just that both the charge and the kick he does when you’re right behind him can double hit you and one shot you pretty often. Obvs the answer there is just don’t get hit but unless you are a hitless runner that shit gets kind of obnoxious when you just wanna beat the boss and then one attack fucks your whole run at 60 vigor with a good amount of scadutree levels too. Not a huge deal though and hardly the only boss to have a double hit problem, just gets on my nerves personally.
Finally someone who doesn’t let go of scrub rage and says Commander Gaius is the worst boss in the entire game (disregarding stuff like Godskin Duo, Esgar, Wormface…) and instead plays the game.
At least in souls games, you got my respect.

I struggled with Gaius a lot, barely found any openings on foot and he had so much hp (Scadu Level 8). Also didn’t get stancebreaks consistently and when he did that big combo I always died so I Wave of golded him. Kinda hated the Boss
Second time I did him on horse with a really strong poison build (Scadu Level 9). This was fun as hell but also really difficult cause you know when I got hit once he just true combod me to death most of the time. Got him in a really lucky try after three hours.
I put him in S Tier after that cause he’s the only boss in the dlc (except PCR) That still felt difficult.
So not gonna lie you saying he’s „So fucking easy“ kinda hurt
The key with the charge attack is that you should jump, not roll.
